A restaurant embracing the history of Detroit's industrial reach. The cinder block building that housed neighborhood fare for decades has received new life to further the tradition of hand-made, thought-out food and beverage.
Expect personal service, handwritten menus, and a fresh, comfortable atmosphere. Food and beverage selections rotate with the seasons and availability of local farm products, with no set menu. Everything is handmade from scratch, with fresh, ethical ingredients from Chef Rigato’s extensive network of farms, butchers and foragers.
Amazing food and service. The staff was very knowledgeable and attentive. The food was creative and full of flavor. I highly recommend the place.
Wish you had membership
Loved the experience! Chef has an amazing talent.
Incredible experience, every time. Can't recommend this place highly enough. I would eat here every day if I had enough self control to keep from stuffing myself into a food coma.
Friends. We shared, enjoyed, and Leslie’s Birthday was celebrated. Unfortunately, Ron was defiantly Republican.
The tasting menu was incredible. One of the best meals I've ever had.
Mabel Gray never disappoints. Their food is always interesting and delicious. It’s always exciting to see what they come up with on their ever changing menu!
Unique spot! Fun experience
First time there and was told to try the tasting menu and the beverage pairing and we did. Glad we made that choice as each course was perfectly presented with our beverage. Unique and creative to say the least.
Worth the wait to get a table at a decent hour on a Saturday night. Will definitely be back and do the tasting menu again
The food was unreal good. Easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Every course was 11/10.
Cool place with amazing food. Definitely going back!!
Great service and food. Menu changes every week. Bartenders were friendly and were very accomodating. Menu changes on a usual basis
Expensive, but the discovery menu is outstanding.
Good wine pairing and knowledgeable waiters make the experience unique in Detroit metro
We always have an incredible experience at Mabel Gray!! The food is superb and the customer service can not be beaten.
Ah-mazing everything! Not a detail left out! Worth the drive, worth the money, worth our time!! Can’t wait to return! Guest chef @Mightyinthemitten nailed it!! Thank you!!
Fabulous food as usual!! Every course was superb!
The food is very different from the norm. It is not the usual standard. For the attention and quality of the food, I believe this is overpriced.
A frequent visitor to Mabel grey, I am consistently impressed by the staff! The cuisine is always eclectic, fresh and delicious. They crank out an insane variety of yumminess in such a small space, it is amazing. And the bartender rocks!
Great experience for birthday dinner
I have been to Mabel Gray several times and will return many more. Regardless of any food aversions I may have had in the past or still currently harbor, I’m willing in all occasions to try them if they’ve been prepared by Chef James, as I trust his talent so much. If he has prepared the dish I am comforted to know it’s been considered on every level and been placed in front of me as an exquisite example of what ever it may be.
Wait staff was awesome. Food was excellent. Love the place.
A wonderful dining experience! The food was so delicious, the service was great too! I will be back soon!!
Excellent service and attention to detail and also great food
Well worth the wait it took to secure a reservation. Try the tasting menu with the wine pairing - you won't be disappointed!
How this isn't at the top of anyone's list of best restaurants in the midwest in unconscionable. The Eater 38 is incomplete without Mabel Gray. Brussel sprouts, meh, Mabel Gray brussel sprouts with venison chorizo, a fantastic dish with flavors that burst with every bite. Tater tots are fast food items, Tater Tot Waffles, unbelievably creative. The Crispy Bass was prepared to perfection, very moist and the skin was, of course, as advertised. The staff is very attentive and in tune with the food prep for that evening.
Mabel Gray is definitely a hidden gem. Had a difficult time finding a convenient reservation that would accommodate my schedule, however, once I found a viable option, it did not disappoint. Great value, great service. One of the best meals I have had in a long while. Would definitely recommend the tasting menu as it is a sample of just about everything on the menu. Still amazed by the taste, quality and presentation. A rare find for the area for its price point. Definitely will dine here again.
What an amazing dinner! The food wa superb, couldn’t be more perfect. Our sever Max was knowledgeable and fun. I can’t wait to go back! It was beyond satisfying. I’m all about the food and company. If you’re looking for fancy, this isn’t your place, but if you’re looking for a mouth organism and great background music while you sit with your date or friends, this is it! I can’t wait to come back!
Food is very expensive and just ok.
I was sick all night. Never again!!
Max is an amazing server! We continue to come back for a night with wonderful food and awesome service!
I had high expectations because of all the reviews. They were all met if not exceeded. The food was amazing and unique. I had to book a reservation a month ahead but was completely worth it!!
The food was phenomenal! Everything about the experience was amazing
The service was outstanding! The food was good, but for the price not as great as I'd built up in my mind. The atmosphere was really fun and the decor was cool. We ate at the bar which was great.
I loved the food, the best meal I had in my life. I did not appreciate that waiter ordered caviar, Champaign and chips for us. We did not realized it was extra, we thought it was part of tasting menu. It was $100extra which I did not plan for. Other than that it was great experience.
The food was outstanding! Always impressive. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because we felt pretty rushed (party of 4). We ordered the tasting menu with drink pairings and we had hoped to linger over the meal with friends, but it seemed more that the goal was to get us through one course after the other quickly. Kind of a bummer because it seems like part of appreciating all the work that goes into each dish would be to relax and savor it. Either way, it will not keep us from coming back again. Each course really was absolutely delicious.
My birthday dinner each year here has been an experience to say the least! This year John was our server and he was beyond!!! Thanks to chef James for an amazing fall menu !
Wonderful food and Service! Shout out to the best waiter Alex ❤️
Amazing birthday! We all had the tasting menu and it was sublime! (with the wine pairing!!!).
Living in the Bay Area, we are spoiled by the food scene, having access to so many innovative and classic restaurants. Mabel Gray's tasting menu was on par, if not better, than a lot of bay area restaurants' we have tried. I'm guessing because they have access to quality local farms without having exorbitant bay area rents/costs, so they can truly focus on their craft without having to charge the customer 150+ each. I'm happy to see more places in Detroit serving sustainable and local food. Each dish was not only presented beautifully, but had complexity in flavors and textures. Each menu is hand written, and dishes served on mismatched vintage china, which adds to the quirkiness and coziness of the place. Drinks are on point as well. I hope to come back on my next visit to the Detroit metro area.
