Overall it was nice, good food and ambience. Noise level was alright, except one table that was really loud.
Fantastic set menu with innovative and delicious food. We enjoyed every one of the given dishes. This was a gastronomic experience and perfect for those who appreciate beautifully created dishes!
Based on the reviews, I thought Mak n Ming was going to blow us away for my husband's birthday. While the first 4 courses of the chef's menu were AMAZING, two of the following dishes were so mediocre that they seemed to make the dinner as a whole fall a bit flat. We also heard the service was fantastic as well and felt pretty underwhelmed by that. Yes, they told us what we in each dish and kept the wine topped...but that was about the only interaction they offered and didn't seem very friendly or welcoming.
I'm sure with the chef's menu changing all the time that this restaurant has the ability to be amazing but with the two dishes we had (rice cakes and a buckwheat blintz) that were boring and flat and way too oily (for the rice cake), we were a bit disappointed with the price that we paid and the overall experience.
Had the demi menu and added the featured dish on top. Everything was delicious and the portions were bigger than I had expected. We were celebrating a birthday and they had put in a birthday message on the dessert and even offered to take a Polaroid picture for us!
Dined here on a Wednesday with a friend. I was looking forward to eating here based on reviews and chose to splurge and get the chef's menu. The experience was underwhelming, so much so that I had to look at their online menu to remember what I ate two days ago. It has changed somewhat already, but I recall that my least favourite dish was a cold asparagus custard, which I did not finish even though I was hungry and it was only the second course. The texture was unpleasant and it lacked flavour. My favourite dish was dessert. Service was fine. Total was $100 including tip.
We wanted to love Mak n Ming. The reviews were terrific - we carefully selected it as one of our dining choices. But we came away disappointed. Because the room is simple and the crowd quiet it really needed to be all about the food. But there was no one dish where we went 'Wow! Everything was OK but anticipation ran higher than that. The meal took about three hours and something that turns us off was the fact that before the last two courses we were already well fed. The feeling at that point is not great. Maybe it was bad luck but in this time round Mak n Ming didn't work for us
Had a wonderful time, the service was outstanding and the food was very tasty!
Enjoyed the chef's tasting menu (6 courses) and all but one of the courses was fantastic. Server had excellent wine knowledge and did a great job taking care of us. Amazing and intimate fine dining experience tucked away in Kits. Will definitely be back in coming months to see how the current menu changes.
Go for the dining experience, but don't expect to go home feeling full even on the full menu.
Expensive, not copious, but very wonderful.
Delightful, eclectic tasting menu as always. We love this restaurant!
Mak and Ming have brought lots of nice creations to the menu with great tasting food and nice wine selection for pairing of the prix fix menu. Keep up the great work and we look forward to coming back for more.
Everything about Mak n Ming was exceptional, from the food to the service to the interior.....
Well planned and well executed in every detail.
Delicious in every way !!!!
Amazing through in and through our. Come with an empty stomach... it’s a lot of food.
The whole chef's tasting menu was delicious. Every course was a surprise and they were able to accommodate my husband's dish allergy as well. Absolutely loved our experience there and can't wait to go back!
Chef's tasting menu, all seven courses were absolutely fantastic. Creative fusion of Japanese and French cuisine, but also has the essence of tastes controlled. I'd easily believe this is a Michelin starred restaurant. Service was great and ambiance was chic and cozy. Highly recommended!
Very nice food and service. Had the chef’s menu and every course was delicious and the flavours were amazing.
Food was excellent!! I was surprised how delicious every dish was. Will definitely recommend to friends and family.
Front end staff very accomidating with regard to Open Table screw up (I booked for Sunday, but Open Table changed the date to Tuesday without really making it evident - I'm sure this has happened to you too sometime)... so they fit us in very elegantly even with a fully booked night and we had a great meal.
The service was exceptional and the food was unique. We had the chef’s menu (highly recommend with the wine pairing). A friend with us had the demi menu and found it less exciting than the chef menu. I suggest only going with the chef menu.
Outstanding meal. We had the tasting menu with beverage pairing. Roger’s cocktails and wine were on point. Tiny place with amazing food.
Excellent food and wine, beautiful atmosphere, small and simple restaurant. The Egg and Potato dish with Truffle is amazing!
Excellent service and food. We would highly recommend Mak N Ming.
We had 4 guest (including 2 vegetarians); Mak N Ming created vegetarian menu prior to the date and the chef even came out to chat with the guests at the table. Our guests were wowed. Definitely coming back again:)
Excellent service, superb food and wine. Understandably expensive.
Went because it was awarded 3rd in best new opening in the Van mag awards and it did not disappoint
Fun creative food.
They offered two tasting at 65 and 85. I am writing about the 85 price level tasting. My date couldnt really finish the starter for the texture. The main was also very disappointing: pork cheek, dry and bland. Sake cheesecake at the end might be the only highlight. This place is simply not worth the high price.
Wonderful as always the beef tartare and the crap and lobster dish were our favorites along with the amazing desserts. We can't wait to go back!
Food was excellent, although was a little frustrating to have to wait nearly 30 minutes from our reservation time as the previous table went late - the staff were apologetic.
Food was an incredible mix of Japanese ingredients and a mix of Asian and fine French flavours. Liked the simplicity of the menu. Two choices either the 3 course menu or the 6 course tasting menu. Great service, servers were personable and always available. A little gem of a restaurant.
Service and food was outstanding! We highly recommend Mak N Ming!
This is an outstanding small restaurant in Kitsilano. Elegant and unique dishes, beautifully prepared and presented. Service was excellent -- attentive but not intrusive. The dishes were explained in a way that heightened our appreciation of the meal. Everything was incredibly fresh. The baked egg with truffles was a standout.
It was my first visit. Loved the decor and the size of the room. I am not a fan of PreFixe and my 2 friends and I were going to have a glass of wine and bolt. We also thought it was expensive. ended up staying and had the full dinner, expecting to each too much. It was really, really good and we didn't leave feeling bloated. We still think it was expensive but the value was there. My suggestion: dump the pre fixe and open up your menu.
Excellent evening. Great for a romantic night or with friends.
The MAJOR downside is the overwhelming smell of deep fat fryer as soon as you walk in, like a cheap bar. I almost left but the food got such good reviews i decided to stay. The food and service are excellent with well curated wine list and pairing but the stale fried fat smell stayed with me and despite hanging clothes outside overnight they still smell. Serious problem that needs to be solved. Even the insides of the windows were covered in a fine coating of oil particles. I thought they were steamed up at first but not so. A real let down - need to install some serious extractors in the kitchen. When they solve this it really will be a destination eatery.
Food was incredible, creative and beautifully plated. There were two Chef Menu options, a half and full, for those who are not as adventurous, I would check out the menu in advance. There wasn't a single course I did not enjoy. It is a small restaurant; intimate with fantastic and knowledgeable service. The only qualm I had was that the exhaust and ventilation system is bad, I would go as far as to say terrible which took away from the experience and my hair and clothes were left smelling intensely like a deep fryer. If you are heading there in your Sunday Best, be prepared to dry clean immediately following the meal.
The restaurant is small but quaint with nice decor & a warm ambiance. The food is EXCEPTIONAL. The chef (s) have fantastic skills and the tasting menu exhibits a tremendous range within a consistent theme. Each dish leaves you craving more. The amount of food is perfect (I am an adult male) at a good price point. Do the beverage pairings, yes beverage as they pair a variety of liquor choices (read sake / wine etc) to compliment the food. Do not miss out on this culinary experience.
The food was not only original but very well balanced. The wine pairing is also a very big part of the experience at this restaurant. Very much recommended!
We wanted to try this Japanese fusion menu after reading a number of reviews . The menu is limited to 2 set meals. Although they may not initially appear to be satisfying, there was more than enough food. It was certainly innovative and delicious and very rich. The pork belly is quite a challenge to the digestion and the dessert although wonderfully delicious, very sweet. The Italian white wine was also very toothsome and not one we knew.
Service is friendly and solicitous. With respect to ambience, the restaurant was pleasantly full and there was a nice, "buzz" , but not earsplitting, we could carry on a conversation.
Definitely worth a visit.
It truly is worth at least a Michelin one star. Creative, elegant and high attention to detail
The $78 tasting menu is an absolute must-try. Totally worth it. Every dish is creative and tempting, a mixture of eastern and western flavour. I guess their price’s going to get higher, as all the good n small restaurants do nowadays. I am gonna visit this place some more times before it gets really expensive.
