Mak N Ming
Executive Chef Makoto Ono and Executive Pastry Chef Amanda Cheng create progressive French/Japanese inspired cuisine with innovative breads and desserts.
Courses that have been featured in our set menus have included Dungeness crab noodle soup, kale “Pocky”, crusted nori bun, mirugai with celery root and parsley, duck breast with bitter greens and pear, farro ochazuke, and squash Mont Blanc.
A carefully chosen beverage and wine selection is designed to complement our unique menus; guided beverage pairings for both the Chef’s and the Demi menus are available upon request.
As big foodies who enjoy all kinds of food from Michelin stars to food carts we were really looking forward to our dinner, but unfortunately we ended up pretty disappointed. We did the full tasting with pairing. The wine selection was mediocre. The first few course were nicely presented and tasted good but nothing exceptional. The biggest disappointment was the sous vide beef that was so overdone it was grey and impossible to chew. We each took 2 bites, placed our cutlery sideways to indicate we were not going to finish the meal leaving almost a full serving. To my astonishment the waiter did not ever once inquire if we liked our food, not even when we decided not to eat the main course. Never have I ever been to a restaurant where the servers didn’t ask or even notice that we didn’t like our food/course. When you are spending $300 on dinner for 2, I think this is the least one should expect.
Whenever a friend or relative comes in town, Mak N Ming is my go to destination. It highlights Pacific Northwest cuisine while using great local ingredients, and many other products which have now found a home in regional Vancouver cuisine.
Food was exceptional, very creative. Service was great. Must go to for foodies.
Meals was good, server explained all plate ingredients with mono tone and not much interactions.. server was too busy for the whole restaurant cos one man show. Quiet atmosphere, like library. I would rather go to a cosy restaurant with friendly server.
tasting menu was delicious - you can tell a lot of thought went into the creation of each dish and how it is all paired together in terms of the textures and flavours. loved all the savoury and the sweets. only thing is the ventilation could be improved. it’s a small cozy space with semi open kitchen so after dinner our clothes all smelled like oil/fried food. regardless i am going back!
Amazing! Chefs 6 course tasting menu was so creative and surprising without being pompous (which some tasting menus tend to be). Beautiful flavors and presentation with great, attentive service
It was very wonderful food and the set menu was not only delicious but filling. The only course that was not good was the soup, should have the option to have it warm instead of cold. It tasted more like runny ice cream, but other than that solid.
Excellent wine. Great food overall. Not outstanding - some seemed a bit processed (the first bite and the chicken but that could be personal taste). Lovely atmosphere. Excellent service. Great decor and ambience. I’d return to try the full menu (we had the demi).
Great! All phenomena
Mak and Ming was phenomenal. I love the food concept there, melding Asian flavors with a more refined presentation. Definitely a great place to bring a date to.
Ambiance it's great as well as the service provided. Food wasnt good at all, plates lack texture, flavor and some of the combinations didn't really work.
Having the taste menu was not the exciting, unforgettable experience I have had in other places
Excellent service, modern minimalist decor, delicious set menu offering in season, local ingredients. Love love!
We went to Mak N Ming for my wife's birthday and had the full tasting menu. I'd say all the dishes were balanced, well plated, and generally very delicious. I actually thought the flavour combinations were relatively simple and classic, such as the halibut and tomato dish which used the acidity of the tomatoes in place of more typical acidity of citrus for seafood. Service was excellent; we were never waiting for anything and were given great descriptions of each dish. Definitely would recommend and would love to try the demi menu sometime.
Mak & Ming have a good wine paring for their chef’s menu. Waiter and chefs very friendly and knowledgeable of their food sources . Good creative Japanese fusion dishes with seasonal vegetables and sea food mix.
Recommend for a quiet dinner as restaurant is not big but noise level is low.
The service was great. The waiters were very attend and detalled. Also was great to hear each dish explanation.
Regarding the menu dishes there were some courses were lacking of flavor specially the chilled sweet pea chawanmushi. It did not have enough flavor and also the texture was not very pleasant.
In addition to that the menu storytelling was not leading a logical concept. I would recommend to change the order of the courses such as the sponge cake and butter with caramel to the end of the whole experience.
Overall, the courses seemed to be weak, however, the service was great.
Mak n Ming is really one of Vancouver’s best restaurants - if not, the best - right now. This is my second visit in 2 weeks - all with foodie friends. The menu, presentation, wine pairing, and service are all exceptional. Nestled right near Kits beach, it seems funny/odd to find this level of excellence. But of course it means is you’re all set for where to go for an after dinner walk.
One of the best meals I have had in memory. Service was impeccable and the food was delicious. Had the demi menu with a fantastic white wine pairing. Food was more than enough and the portions were big. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a top restaurant in Vancouver as date spot or and great night out.
Excellent inventive food with interesting flavors intermingling together at the right time
beautiful restaurant with thoughtfully curated dishes. the staff were very knowledgeable and accommodating. before we left they gave us some complimentary almond cakes for our next morning's coffee (they were really good)
however I would recommend coming to the area earlier to find parking!
Overall it was nice, good food and ambience. Noise level was alright, except one table that was really loud.
Fantastic set menu with innovative and delicious food. We enjoyed every one of the given dishes. This was a gastronomic experience and perfect for those who appreciate beautifully created dishes!
Birthday meal. All the food was excellent, service was great
Based on the reviews, I thought Mak n Ming was going to blow us away for my husband's birthday. While the first 4 courses of the chef's menu were AMAZING, two of the following dishes were so mediocre that they seemed to make the dinner as a whole fall a bit flat. We also heard the service was fantastic as well and felt pretty underwhelmed by that. Yes, they told us what we in each dish and kept the wine topped...but that was about the only interaction they offered and didn't seem very friendly or welcoming.
I'm sure with the chef's menu changing all the time that this restaurant has the ability to be amazing but with the two dishes we had (rice cakes and a buckwheat blintz) that were boring and flat and way too oily (for the rice cake), we were a bit disappointed with the price that we paid and the overall experience.
Had the demi menu and added the featured dish on top. Everything was delicious and the portions were bigger than I had expected. We were celebrating a birthday and they had put in a birthday message on the dessert and even offered to take a Polaroid picture for us!
Dined here on a Wednesday with a friend. I was looking forward to eating here based on reviews and chose to splurge and get the chef's menu. The experience was underwhelming, so much so that I had to look at their online menu to remember what I ate two days ago. It has changed somewhat already, but I recall that my least favourite dish was a cold asparagus custard, which I did not finish even though I was hungry and it was only the second course. The texture was unpleasant and it lacked flavour. My favourite dish was dessert. Service was fine. Total was $100 including tip.
We wanted to love Mak n Ming. The reviews were terrific - we carefully selected it as one of our dining choices. But we came away disappointed. Because the room is simple and the crowd quiet it really needed to be all about the food. But there was no one dish where we went 'Wow! Everything was OK but anticipation ran higher than that. The meal took about three hours and something that turns us off was the fact that before the last two courses we were already well fed. The feeling at that point is not great. Maybe it was bad luck but in this time round Mak n Ming didn't work for us
Had a wonderful time, the service was outstanding and the food was very tasty!
Enjoyed the chef's tasting menu (6 courses) and all but one of the courses was fantastic. Server had excellent wine knowledge and did a great job taking care of us. Amazing and intimate fine dining experience tucked away in Kits. Will definitely be back in coming months to see how the current menu changes.
Go for the dining experience, but don't expect to go home feeling full even on the full menu.
Expensive, not copious, but very wonderful.
Delightful, eclectic tasting menu as always. We love this restaurant!
Mak and Ming have brought lots of nice creations to the menu with great tasting food and nice wine selection for pairing of the prix fix menu. Keep up the great work and we look forward to coming back for more.
Everything about Mak n Ming was exceptional, from the food to the service to the interior.....
Well planned and well executed in every detail.
Delicious in every way !!!!
Amazing through in and through our. Come with an empty stomach... it’s a lot of food.
The whole chef's tasting menu was delicious. Every course was a surprise and they were able to accommodate my husband's dish allergy as well. Absolutely loved our experience there and can't wait to go back!
Chef's tasting menu, all seven courses were absolutely fantastic. Creative fusion of Japanese and French cuisine, but also has the essence of tastes controlled. I'd easily believe this is a Michelin starred restaurant. Service was great and ambiance was chic and cozy. Highly recommended!
Very nice food and service. Had the chef’s menu and every course was delicious and the flavours were amazing.
Food was excellent!! I was surprised how delicious every dish was. Will definitely recommend to friends and family.
Interesting food. Pricey... particularly the demi menu. The full tasting menu is more worthwhile but also pricey. Service was fantastic.
Front end staff very accomidating with regard to Open Table screw up (I booked for Sunday, but Open Table changed the date to Tuesday without really making it evident - I'm sure this has happened to you too sometime)... so they fit us in very elegantly even with a fully booked night and we had a great meal.
