Executive Chef Makoto Ono and Executive Pastry Chef Amanda Cheng create progressive French/Japanese inspired cuisine with innovative breads and desserts.
Courses that have been featured in our set menus have included Dungeness crab noodle soup, kale “Pocky”, crusted nori bun, mirugai with celery root and parsley, duck breast with bitter greens and pear, farro ochazuke, and squash Mont Blanc.
A carefully chosen beverage and wine selection is designed to complement our unique menus; guided beverage pairings for both the Chef’s and the Demi menus are available upon request.

We went here for Dine Out and had a great meal. Really unique flavours, creative menus and beautiful presentation. Service was excellent. Will definitely be going back!

Appetizers were both very good. - chicken wings and tofu. Pork belly in the rice bowl was bland and dry.
We tried it for the first time during dine out. The presentation and atmosphere was quite nice, but we both found that the food was just okay. It wasn't very tasty. The three courses included wings, pork belly, and a dessert. With wings, I think you can go two directions - pub style delicious and sloppy, or impeccably prepared and finely seasoned. They were somewhere in between, not bad, but not memorable. I felt the same way about the pork belly. The desserts were delicious though, so it ended on a high note.
I started with the oyster and then the crispy chicken wings with yuzu dipping sauce. I shouldn't have eaten all of it [it was so good] because the pork belly rice dish is so big. And then to finish, a delicious dark chocolate cake with a surprise miso caramel sauce. It was a delicious meal in a cozy setting with great service. I would recommend Mak N Ming.
Over price. Small portion. Nothing original. Loud as hell.
Disappointed overall. Heard some hype but it wasnt worth it. The pork belly was not good, over cooked anand tough.
Incredible creative and personalized take on Asian fusion. The restaurant team's attention to detail stood out right from their pre-arrival outreach to discuss food allergies to the welcome at the restaurant and their curation of our dining experience. Its a super small and compact dining room which means you are not only rubbing elbows with your fellow diners but are also able to benefit from close visuals and smells of all the food that is showing up at tables near you. When everyone around is excited by their food choices this makes for a good thing!
Food delicious and well presented. Staff friendly, efficient and helpful.
We thought the room physically unappealing - appeared unfinished. Lighting strung vertically throughout opposite wall glaring and hard on the eyes. Room a little chilly. Seating on hard benches, no cushioning, just a thin folded blanket.
We had a great time, the food and service were very good.
We adore this place. On this occasion we had a few issues that gave us pause:
- we booked and it was not until we received confirmation that it was dine out. Our intent was not a five course meal mid week at 9 pm.
- we asked if we could add one to party which was not of issue but that there was no latitude in perhaps sharing four full meals with five total. Upon arrival we saw midweek second seating with no one in restaurant other than our table and one other table of 2. Shane greater latitude could not be accommodated due to fact it would not displace a paying customer.
- we entered to smell of natural gas, announced and were dismissed in an inelegant way. Not the greatest of receptions for what would lead to an over 700 meal.
We expect better for an exceptional restaurant we highly recommend.
Food is good, not outstanding. Service is up to standard.
Bad ventilation since the space is small and my cloths and hair smell like a Chinese Kitchen after.

This was my second time dining at Mak n Ming and have left both times extremely happy. The food is amazing, the service is impeccable and the atmosphere is intimate. One of my favourite places to recommend to friends.
Wonderful, inventive but never over the top. Love the pace of the meal that allows you to appreciate the delicacy of each dish but also the conversation at the table. A favourite place!

Decent ambiance, and service. However the food really did not deliver. Considering how much I spent on the final bill I was very very disappointed. There was even one dish on the tasting menu that we didn't eat. What a waste of money
The service was good. The place is cozy. All in our party enjoyed the food. The only challenge is to find parking. My suggestion is to arrive early, park the car on 4th Avenue.
The tasting menu was a miss. The description sounded amazing but the execution didn't deliver. Overall, lots of effort was put in the presentation and the food was innovative but at the expense of customers wallet.
Our impression from last January were already quite good but this time sealed the deal. This restaurant is worth every penny they charge for their creative, inventive and delicious food. And the service is outstanding.
I realize I would be in the minority on this one. It came highly recommended and I had very high expectations. Service was impeccable but the food was... OK. There were two or three dishes that I enjoyed (but only 2 days later, I cannot remember what they were exactly, so this must tell you something) and the rest were ... fine. Nothing that left a lasting impression. Instead, some dishes felt overwrought, and some were a tad bland. We did drink so this of course added to our bill but at the end of the day, it was a rather hefty figure for a non-memorable meal. I appreciated the attentiveness of the staff, so no complaints there.
Extraordinary, inspiring, flavourful cuisine with excellent wine pairing. Fabulous entertaining and knowledgeable staff. Great value with reasonable pricing. A great culinary experience for foodies :-)
Mak N Ming made sure to make my birthday dinner extra special. Everything was delicious per usual, but it’s the additional small touches that made it all very memorable. Thank you!
This one's on me. I'm not into the chef's menu option as much as I thought I'd be. I was uncomfortably full during my birthday dinner, mostly with food I enjoyed, but also with some "exotic" items that were not my favorite. The plates came out too slowly, which gave me time to feel fuller. By the 8th course, yes the 8th course, I was ready to explode. For the price (which was as expensive as some of the nicest restaurants in town) I thought the overall experience was mediocre. Next time, I'll stick to my favorite spots for my birthday dinner. Thanks anyway Mak n Ming. Swing n Miss for me.
Mak n Ming are always so creative and wonderful to taste the new dishes that they come up with. Just an awesome restaurant and so glad it is in my neighbourhood! Superb!
We had the Chef's Dinner Menu in November. Service and setting are all top notch with a notable drinks menu. The ambiance at Mak N Ming was cosy yet elegant. The seating is intimate according to its Japanese roots, yet it was very much a casual gourmet west coast experience. Each savoury dish was capably prepared with quality ingredients. However, I found each one just shy of excitement in terms of balance and flavour. Many dishes, we found were heavy on the palate. The menu as a whole was confounding. Mainly a lack of synergy, where each dish was not building up our dinner into an exceptionally memorable experience. The cheese dish and dessert on the other hand, brought us to the climax of our meal. Absolutely, wonderful desserts. Although, our experience was somewhat of a miss. There is a lot of talent at Mak N Ming and a whole lot of room for growth.
Expensive. Chicken, sorghum, tapioca pudding, corn, rice ... It just felt like the components of this meal added up to about $8 of cost. It tasted good, just not even close to $300 good. We did have wine with our meal, so $50 for a $12 bottle of wine boosted the final bill for sure.
Let me first disarm this defense: "why didn't you say something if you didn't have a great experience?" We did. When the server takes away the half-eaten steak - "are you still working?" - and gets the response, "I'm not up for the job." When the server takes away the almost untouched rice course. That's a heads up.
Here's a quick wrap of the low-lights.
1. It turns out if you sous vide brisket for 24 hours - as proudly announced by the server - at too high a heat, it turns into beef jerky. Browning it "in cast iron" does not improve the situation.
2. Rice cooked in dashi and piled high with gorgeous lobster mushrooms - how could you go wrong? By dousing the bowl with lemon verbena / tea "broth," drowning out the rich umami flavors and turning the whole dish into something reminiscent of bathwater.
3. The superb scallop... in celery mucus with visibly dry uni.
4. The "first bite" and "cheese course" would be slightly above-average freezer food from Trader Joes.
Highlights included a perfectly seasoned and well-textured kabocha squash patty beside a tasty tuna-mayo concoction, all accompanied by a bottle of house-made spicy(ish) sauce. We also appreciated how lowly tapioca pudding (which was well-prepared and nicely perfumed with pineapple chunks) got elevated to fancy dessert status, though the three plops of matcha each topped with a crudely hand-torn portion of shiso leaf seemed apathetic and poorly matched to the main flavor profile.
(Kudos to the wait staff for remembering that there had been a snafu with a previous booking, so they comped a round of drinks).

Ever since discovering this place, I've been instantly in love. In love with everything. From food to ambiance, from drinks to service. It is creative, it is authentic, it is cosy. Everyone there makes you feel simply awesome. Love it, there's no other way to describe it.
As big foodies who enjoy all kinds of food from Michelin stars to food carts we were really looking forward to our dinner, but unfortunately we ended up pretty disappointed. We did the full tasting with pairing. The wine selection was mediocre. The first few course were nicely presented and tasted good but nothing exceptional. The biggest disappointment was the sous vide beef that was so overdone it was grey and impossible to chew. We each took 2 bites, placed our cutlery sideways to indicate we were not going to finish the meal leaving almost a full serving. To my astonishment the waiter did not ever once inquire if we liked our food, not even when we decided not to eat the main course. Never have I ever been to a restaurant where the servers didn’t ask or even notice that we didn’t like our food/course. When you are spending $300 on dinner for 2, I think this is the least one should expect.
Whenever a friend or relative comes in town, Mak N Ming is my go to destination. It highlights Pacific Northwest cuisine while using great local ingredients, and many other products which have now found a home in regional Vancouver cuisine.
Food was exceptional, very creative. Service was great. Must go to for foodies.
Meals was good, server explained all plate ingredients with mono tone and not much interactions.. server was too busy for the whole restaurant cos one man show. Quiet atmosphere, like library. I would rather go to a cosy restaurant with friendly server.
tasting menu was delicious - you can tell a lot of thought went into the creation of each dish and how it is all paired together in terms of the textures and flavours. loved all the savoury and the sweets. only thing is the ventilation could be improved. it’s a small cozy space with semi open kitchen so after dinner our clothes all smelled like oil/fried food. regardless i am going back!
Amazing! Chefs 6 course tasting menu was so creative and surprising without being pompous (which some tasting menus tend to be). Beautiful flavors and presentation with great, attentive service

The tasting menu was very interesting and creative and delicious. The servers were
well trained, knowledgeable and friendly. The restaurant is just right size for intimate outings.
Good wine selection.
It was very wonderful food and the set menu was not only delicious but filling. The only course that was not good was the soup, should have the option to have it warm instead of cold. It tasted more like runny ice cream, but other than that solid.
Excellent wine. Great food overall. Not outstanding - some seemed a bit processed (the first bite and the chicken but that could be personal taste). Lovely atmosphere. Excellent service. Great decor and ambience. I’d return to try the full menu (we had the demi).
