About Mamakas Taverna
Mamakas Taverna is an elegant 85-seat Greek taverna on Ossington Ave. Owner Thanos Tripi brings a fresh, authentic approach to Aegean food, offering classical Greek dishes against a contemporary canvas. Each plate is thoughtfully crafted to evoke the way Thanos’ grandmother cooked, inviting guests to explore the Greece he grew up with through food, art and music.
Meant to mimic an open market, the room is built of white concrete blocks creating an effect similar to the stucco seen throughout Greece. Mamakas is a nod to heritage, history and family memories – the daily trip to the market for ripe and fragrant tomatoes. Visiting a trusted butcher for fresh paithakia, and the local fish monger for the daily catch.
Recipes passed down through generations. Honest Greek fare with a modern twist. Designed to share. Everything just as Thanos’ family has done through the ages.

Mamakas Taverna Ratings and Reviews
Amazing! 10/10 good job. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Most definitely some of the best Greek food we have ever had. The staff was courteous and professional and the ambience great fun. We will tell our friends about this great Greek experience.
I like the ambience and decor especially the glass exterior walls which allow you to see in. Noise is often a strain in restaurants but here I found the level never passed more than a pleasing buzz. The menu seems diverse but we realized once we got our food that cheese or dairy is used in most of what we ordered. I'd be cognizant of that next time. Tarama and lamb chops were the standouts of a delicious meal. The service was attentive, efficient and friendly. We'd go back!
Nina our server added exponentially to the evening. She is LOVELY. Oh, food good too :).
Great food, terrific waiter and pretty place
3rd visit. More to come
Terrific. Warm, lively and convivial.
Always as expected. Great menu and the food never disappoints. Our server was great too.
Great server Mik
Very busy but still able to converse
Fantastic service and perfect food. Second time at Mamakas and would go back every day if I could. Thank you for making my birthday such a special treat! Special shout out to our amazing server who was knowledgeable, attentive, and offered me extra brine for my dirty martini :)
Only my second time at Mamakas but have not been disappointed on either occasion.
The food is fresh and tastes delicious, the wine is well sourced in Greece and the waiter
is happy to let you taste a little before deciding. The dips are second to none along with
the flat bread that they bake on site. Toronto Life needs to give them more stars !!
Between all of that and the ambiance, what more can one say....
The food is delicious and the service was exceptional. Such a nice, casual room.
Beautiful restaurant with great service. The food was beyond our expectations. I would eat there every night. We loved it so much!
We went to Mamakas prior to going to a show almost next door.I have lived in Toronto for over 50 years and this was one of the best meals I have had. We started with the pita bread and dip, delicious, then an excellent Greek Salad , we shared (which our server recommended) the fish of the day (sea bass) fresh and fantastic ! We didn't have room for desert. The service was amazing. Can't wait to go back.
Fantastic food! We started with a delicious Kopanisti dip with fresh, hot pitas and easily could have eaten that all evening. But we followed with two entrees: the grilled sea bass and the rack of lamb, adding an order of brussel sprouts served atop bulgar and creamed feta. Paired it all with an exceptional wine. Everything was superb. And the service was second-to-none. Our server was very knowledgeable and actually seemed proud of the various menu offerings. Will definitely return.
Love the food and waiter...only problem was the table you gave us was the last one before the bathroom...wouldnt mind if it was not for that the 3 empty tables we passed to get there were empty and stayed empty...Its a busy little corner with a busboy or waiter or client running by every 30 seconds...made us feel a little cheap to be sitting there with all those other tables empty all evening..
Took 20 minutes upon arrival before we were served a drink. No one asked if we wanted wine with our dinner which I found peculiar. I booked a table for 8:00 pm. Prior to coming Mamakas called to ask if I wanted to extend reservation time which I did not understand. She told me if I dont I could be booted out at 10. If someone wanted our table so I extended until 10:30m(I didn’t think I would need to worry at that point if we stayed beyond this time. I was so wrong. We were never offered coffee/tea/dessert and booted out at 10:30 to accommodate another guest. We will NOT be returning
Our waiter was so great and personable! Made suggestions and recommendations which were most appreciated! We had a wonderful meal!
Other then the noise level the food and service were top notch. This was not my first time and it won't be my last!
Very slow service. Not a great selection of wines by the glass
We have dined at Mamakas a couple of years ago and I have to say the food was better at the time. We were a bit disappointed and we had guests with us. The portions were very small for the prices and I have to say nothing was overly impressive. The octopus main was very very small (it seems they used baby octopus) with 2 small legs, looks more like an appetizer good for one person (20$). Swordfish appetizer also barely enough for 4 bites. Taramosalata had a nice flavour but it was a bit runny (too creamy for how it should be). The cauliflower vegetarian main was also very small, not baked enough, mediocre flavour, and nothing special about it for 15$. We also ordered a grilled sea bass, it was nice, a bit overgrilled, but also nothing special about it (for 35$), like ordering from any regular restaurant/grill. Just some olive oil and a lemon wedge. As for desserts, the quince ice cream was overpowered by cinnamon (you can't taste the quince), and the mastic pear sorbet didn't have any hints of mastic (but it was nice nevertheless). In total, 250$ for 4 persons including tip without any drinks (just water). And we weren't completely full.
Our impression is that this place has become overrated because people get over impressed by the seemingly 'exotic' ingredients from Greece, and the nice presentation of plates.
Excellent food and service!
Authentic and delicious.
Our table was super close to other tables, very loud so very difficult to even hear the person across from you. Food taste is good but the value is questionable for what you get. Example the fish of the day was a fillet basa for $38 and it doesn’t come with any side or even bread to dip! Pretty steep for a piece of bass which is not even Chilean basa.
Impeccable fresh and delicious food. Excellent service. We will be back
Very good management team!
From the moment we parked on the street we could see this was going to be a good experience. Loved the white colours throughout the space. It gave it a Greek feel. When I booked the reservation my only option was the bar seating. I was unsure about having dinner while sitting at the bar. After enjoying the intimate space, for us. it was the best seat in the house. Great for date night. We enjoyed every part of our meal, from the Greek white wines, (suggested by our bartender/server), to the sea bream main. Loved the Haloumi appetizer.
Great food in a diner experience. Attentive knowledgeable waiter.
This restaurant is the best Greek food ever. It's delicious and the bread is amazing. It is on the pricey side but it's totally worth it. Highly reccomend.
We were curious to try it because of the setting and the absolutely amazing romantic ambience. The dips and spanakopita we had as apps were great, albeit a bit sweeter than one would expect, but the lamb arrived as chewy and not quite cooked properly-- quite rare inside and tough. I guess Torontonians have very low expectations when it comes to Greek food, which is understandable to me from the last time I went to the Taste of the Danforth. And hence the good reviews for this place.
Well, as my wife said, you can't screw up lamb in a Greek resto so we decided there's no reason to go back-- too bad, because of the beautiful setting for our little date night.
The meal at Mamakas was unbelievable, as were the unique desserts! From the spreads/dips on warm pita, to the fish of the day, fresh salad, green beans and lamb shanks. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
The desserts were exceptional - incorporating olives and eggplant into more traditional desserts like ice cream and cake. It'll blow your mind.
Came here while on a brief vacation and was blown away by the food. Had a variety of appetizers including a phenomenal goat tartare. I would definitely recommend the grilled octopus as well. Couldn't have had a better experience
Overall we were disappointed with the value of the food and the service. Taste was ok overall but the price did not reflect quality both in portion and taste. The labchops came to the table with a rare cook. We had requested they cook it a bit more and was told that we should have indicated it at time of ordering. We were never asked how we like it cooked since lamb chops are always best served at medium cook at the least. We were also questioned by the waitress what we considered undercooked and when we asked her what she thought the meat was cooked to she said she doesn’t know because she doesn’t eat meat. It was clearly rare. They brought out a new plate but even though they were cooked to medium, the meat itself was overly chewy and not that appetizing. We would probably not go back again.
We loved the food, ambience, but we felt rushed . Our diners we prefer to enjoy longer than 2 hours . Especially when you’re spending a good amount of money.
All staff are very knowledgeable about the dishes being served - Any food allergies are quickly addressed. A great spot on Ossington for some Greek/Mediterranean food! Have been several times and will continue to return.
Very energetic. Terrific wait staff. Biggest smiles in town. Food wonderful
We found the noise level too high to carry on a conversation
In spite of the noise we shall return
I’m celiac and being such, birthdays are usually tough for me to celebrate anywhere with any real ambience. I LOVED Mamakas, the food was outstanding, our server was knowledgeable and service was fast but not brisk. It’s a shame than the hostess was not pleasant by any means; didn’t greet us warmly if at all, didn’t say goodnight when we left, scoffed when we told her we brought a cake and had called beforehand. But other than her, it was perfect!
Don't like that you can't bring in a birthday cake. Also, not kid friendly at all!!!!!
The dips were fantastic however my so called boneless sea bass had to many bones left in it which made my dinner not as enjoyable as I had wished. My friend had the grilled lamb chops which he said was fantastic...the so called side potatoes were actually frech fries that were done to perfection.
The food here is great - unfortunately the service is slow and robotic. It took them 15 minutes after seating us to take a drink order and then another 15 minutes to provide those drinks. They also demand that you eat within 2 hours. That would make sense if they didn't take 30 minutes to deliver drinks.
Yes this is a hip and busy place but there are much better options in the city for tasty food with much better service.
