Booked Maru for a chill anniversary dinner for me and my partner. Our server was excellent and patient when we asked questions about the menu and advice on how much to order. I’ve been to restaurants where I’ve been pushed to order more and was pleasantly surprised when he said we had ordered enough. We order 2 different types of canapés (unagi and hamachi) my partner loved the hamachi better and I surprisingly liked the unagi best. We also got the Octopus that came with duck fat potatoes and this tasty miso sauce. Lastly we added the chef sashimi which was fresh and delicious. Our order came with tuna belly, hamachi, scallops, salmon, and garnished with pretty edible flowers, fresh wasabi, ginger, perilla leaves, seaweed, lime, Japanese plum, fig, and the tiniest kiwi. We savoured every bite and considered ordering more even though we were both full. We had a glass of wine and a beer. Overall great atmosphere, outstanding service, and incredible food. Will be back with friends so we can try more dishes.

The short rib was barely luke warm and dry. The unagi pressed sushi had way too much rice and the unagi skin was chewy. Our waiter never refilled our water...my glass was completely empty. We also had the shrimp tempura (because they didn't have vegetables tempura) and the crab canapés - they were okay.

My second time visiting Maru. What they had on the menu was amazing, but last time I went the menu was much more expansive. I don't know whether the reduction was due to market availability or what, but the quality and types of fish offerings were fairly limited.

Wonderful experience. Everything was so delicious. Miso soup, nori canapés, eggplant, karagae chicken, pork tenderloin and of course, the sushi and sashimi. Will definitely be back!

Our first time here and we were glad we came. Very friendly and attentive staff, food was delicious and unique menu. Only wished there was a physical menu for seniors, looking at the items on the phone was challenging for some. Ambiance was nice, bustling and chill at the same time. Will definitely return! Neighbourhood gem!

Food is top notch, service is normally excellent with Japanese staff. Experience with non-asian male server was terrible. Kept clustering dishes onto the table, expecting patron to move dishes for him. Role of server definitely in confusion. His knuckles kept brushing up with other food, already on the table, while serving. Was completely lost asking for utensils for children. Trying to flag down for water refill was impossible, in the end we just asked for the bill.

Originally from Montreal, a friend suggested this restaurant. Small authentic Japanese cuisine, with amazing fish options and beautiful presentation. The canopies are a must have and the octopus two ways was delicious.

Overall, pretty good Leslieville establishment. Tables were a bit close to one another, thus causing the restaurant be on the noisey side. Other than that, great food, service and pricing. Easy to get to via public transit or by car.

Quite possibly the best sashimi I've had in Toronto. The tuna belly and the scallop sashimi in particular were fantastic. The rolls are fun and flavourful, and we also enjoyed the vegetable tempura and eggplant starter. Can't wait to return!

Maru is always incredible! My husband and I have been a handful of times, and we love going back. They switch up their menus from time to time, so we get to experience different dishes each time we go. For their anniversary, they teamed up with Roselle two years in a row for their signature dessert, and that’s just a perfect finish to a great meal at Maru!

I want to share my experience at a restaurant that offers a unique culinary journey, perfect for food lovers who appreciate all the little details. The chefs put in a lot of effort to make sure every dish is prepared and presented thoughtfully, although this might not be everyone's cup of tea. My top recommendations are the Nori Canapés and the Salmon Don, priced at $25. Also, their collaboration with Roselle desserts is impressive. I had their anniversary cake for the second year in a row, and it was just as amazing as the first time.
