Mexican / Regional American (Southwestern)
Located in the heart of the old railroad and mining town of Minturn, the Saloon’s building dates back to 1901. During the last one hundred years it has been, at one time or another, home to various taverns, restaurants and even back room gambling for railroaders. While the last four decades have seen the development of Vail and Beaver Creek resorts just seven miles on either side of Minturn, the town’s appearance and feel retains its historic Colorado roots.

Owners Steve Campbell and Andy Kaufman have been in the restaurant business in the Vail area since the mid 1970’s and have operated the Minturn Saloon proudly since 1986. When they bought the Minturn Saloon, along with Bobby Pelz and Doug Newhouse back in July of 1986, “behind the scenes” renovations were begun. The recipes and menu were enhanced, the memorabilia collection expanded, and the kitchen improved. The Minturn Saloon is now considered one of the landmark restaurants in the Vail/Beaver Creek area.

Been going for 30 years. Food was disappointing may have ended tradition. With other prices, charge for chips and salsa a real gouge.

The history in this place is just astonishing. Oh, by the way the food and service are good too, but the ambiance and amazing autographed posters and photos are the winner.

Fun vibe!! Surprised to find such good (Tex)Mexican food all the way up in the Colorado mountains! The Duke Margaritas were tasty as well.

This 100 year old tavern is just wonderful. It's what all old western taverns should be like. Go now before the renovations start!

I have been coming to the Saloon for 10 years and it was always a highlight of my trip to Vail. However, as soon as we walked in we could tell something was different. We were not greeted with that warm local feeling we always got. When we sat at the table we noticed a significant change in the menu from a selection standpoint as well as pricing ( everything more than doubled) which is fine but the prices were now at major big city levels. When we asked the waitress about the changes she said - new owners. We said - that's great and we hope they make good changes. The food came and we were disappointed. The quality was great but the portions were very small, especially the salsa and guacamole and then I got my $15 margarita and it was 6oz at most. We did enjoy the taste of the food so we brushed off the changes and would have just left it at that . However, then the bill came - Given the prices noted above it was a lot - 1 drink - no apps other than chips and it was $50 a head which again we were ok with. normally tip 25% and planned to do so here as well. Then my notification came in on my phone of them processing the credit card... they automatically ran through a 20% gratuity even though the slip did not show that. In all the meals I have had outside I have never had a restaurant do that. It was a sign that they are all about maximizing profit at the expense of a good experience. I just signed the slip and walked out knowing that I would not be back and can find better options locally at a more reasonable value.

Minturn SaloonResponded on February 24, 2022

Hello anonymous! We don't add gratuity unless it's a party of 6 or more. We are very transparent about this and your final check will clearly show the gratuity added on the slip. The notification on your phone was the credit card company doing a pre-authorization/temporary hold that lasts a few days until the settlement comes through. This hold includes a 20% gratuity as a security measure. Please call the restaurant and speak to Connie Or Danie so we can make sure you didn't get overcharged.

Sage was the friendliest hostess we have ever met! She was super accommodating of our last minute party size increase and gave us a hug when we got there and when we left and kept in checking on us to make sure we were having a great time! The waiter was super friendly too and gave great recommendations on food and drinks. We loved the authentic old west vibe.

What happened to the saloon? We were Very disappointed in the menu and the quality of the food. Who makes chicken fajitas with Heinz 57 sauce? The old original Minturn saloon will be missed. 🥺

Minturn SaloonResponded on February 8, 2022

Hi there. Thanks for the feedback. Our chicken fajitas are the same recipe. Even the same cooks in the kitchen as years passed! Perhaps you caught us on an off night and we do apologize for that. You will now find better ingredients and more freshly homemade sauces, salsas, and dressings than you would before. Hope we get the opportunity to change your mind in the future!

Their food, drinks, and service were all very good. But the place is exorbitantly overpriced now that it is under new ownership. And the menu was drastically shrunk, as have the plates. You could fit two of their burritos into the palm of your hand. We loved the place in years past as it was kind of like a hidden gem. Great option to get away from all the noise and posh of Vail Village. But I guess Minturn restaurants are starting to begin taking steps towards being just another extension of the typical skyrocketed price model that Vail follows. Its too bad. This places atmosphere and food are very high quality

Server was the sweetest ever! Almost made up for the $20 smallest burrito in the world. Not kidding it was smaller than a burrito you would expect to be on a children’s menu. It was a normal taco size tortilla filled with about a spoon of filling and was flat. Wish we took a photo but my husband finished it in 3 bites and beat me to it. That was very disappointing and will probably make us not return. Also, we didn’t realize it while in there but once we left we realized how much we smelled of cooking oil and had to go home and all shower and hang out winter coats outside to try and get rid of the smell. This place has a lot of potential and the history is interesting.. too bad it was a very expensive meal and drinks and left a lot to be desired. $130 for 2 kids tacos and drinks, order of fajitas, world’s smallest burrito, can of beer, skinny marg with well tequila and chips and guac.

We loved the atmosphere of the old saloon and all of the signed photos and memorabilia. Great location in the little town on Minturn. We liked Brandons seasoning on the smoked wings as well as the chicken fajitas and smothered burrito. The Mile margarita was a great after ski addition.

We have been coming to the Minturn Saloon for over 20 years. We will likely not be back again. I am certain the new owners are lovely people but the changes made to the menu are unfortunate. One of the best things about the Saloon was the consistency of the food. So many of the favorites are no longer on the menu and the food was not up to par. The ribs were just ok (so disappointing.) The Smothered Burrito was not smothered in anything and was pathetic. It looked like a softball, not a burrito. I ordered the fajitas, only because the chimichangas have been removed from the menu, and they were below average. The restaurant was maybe a third full and it was Saturday night. There was no reason to change the Saloon, why fix something that wasn't broken? We were very disappointed to say the least. RIP Minturn Saloon :(

Minturn SaloonResponded on January 12, 2022

Thanks for your perspective, Jennifer. Sorry we took away some of your favorites. We know what's it's like to have nostalgia for the past as we've also been enjoying The Saloon for 20 years. We're buying better ingredients. We're using less frozen products. We're making fresh salsas. Ironically, the fajitas are exactly the same except we upgraded the meat! Same marinade, same veggies, probably even the same cook! Hopefully we'll be able to provide a better experience in the future for you.
