Seven nights a week, live local bands take the stage at Montreal’s hottest live music bar and bistro. Modavie’s spirited setting encompasses two intimate floors and sets the scene for a night of great tunes and top dining . The bistro’s far-reaching wine menu hits just the right notes and helps round off succulent lamb, fish, beef, duck and inspired pasta dishes.
Great service and the food was amazing! One of our favourite dinner spots in Montreal!
Nice place for a not-too-advanced dinner. The Osso bucco with the recommended red wine was fantastic, the vegetarian penne a bit boring. A glass of port on the house was a nice surprise. Remember to bring some tip to the musician (I didn’t - I am sorry).
Modavie was my best restaurant/dinning experience while visiting Montréal.
We had indicated on the online reservations our preference for regular chair height seating. On arrival however we were escorted to high chair seating. After pointing out their error we were directed to regular seating but immediately told we only had 90 minutes because this table was reserved for later on??!! They claim their specialty was lamb, however, I imagine to meet a certain volume, they use the cheaper cut New Zealand lamb, very thin. May I also mention both myself and my spouse asked for medium rare for both our dishes and both were received well done. There was an attempt to address our dissatisfaction with the manager only to be told any future patronage would not be welcome. May I too remind servers that a tip is an acknowledgement of service rendered not an obligation to increase pay cheques. This is truly unfortunate, the place has potential but seems to have chosen quantity over quality, single visit tourists rather than local clientele.
Nice location and excellent service. It didn’t seem the passion for the food quality was so much of a concern. We were in Montreal to enjoy ourselves, so we did.
The atmosphere was charming (exposed brick, vintage posters, great lighting), our waiter was perfect (not too much or too little attention), and the food was great. We had the wild bore, which was so tender it fell off the bone.
Clean, tasty food with fabulous service. Would definitely return when back in town.
Good quality and service for the pricing. I would recommend this place if you are looking for a Québécois restaurant in the neighbourhood. This is my second visit.
Un restaurant québécois de bon qualité et service pour son prix. Ceci est ma deuxième visite.
Loved it and appreciated the birthday sparkler! Great food and great music.
Manque d’un ptit grignotage à l’arrivée ,offert type olive marinée, toast etc.
Nice live jazz.
Food served slow, we waited about an hour for main entree
Cute restaurant in old Montréal. Very friendly service and absolutely delicious food! I’ll come back next time I am in Montréal! Merci
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Sonia was our server for 2 nights and she was charming. Fun, but mellow wine bar with an outstanding selection of wines from all over the world. Highly recommended.
Really good French onion soup. Best we have had. Our waiter was great - Definitely gave us his opinion about what to order and it worked out really well. Really nice atmosphere with jazz music in the background, but still calm and relaxing. Very nice place.
Excellent service. Friendly wait staff. Wonderful food. The steak was perfect. The live music made the experience even better.
Unfortunately we were there at a bad time. Although they warned us before we were seated that their computer system was down as a result things maybe slow. They appeared to be understaffed- one server seemed to be doing the entire upstairs. The singer was good but a bit loud for conversation. Food was good but after being there for two hours we gave up on ordering dessert.
Fabulous meal, great service! We enjoyed the live jazz music in second floor as it was not too over powering to have a conversation on the first floor dining level.
Tres bon restaurant ! Excellent service et bonne musique
Juste un peu trop bruyant
Our server, Lea, was the best! She was so kind to my two little boys ( 3 and 5). The food was outstanding. My husband ordered their lamb chops and remarked how excellent they were. Our boys INHALED their pasta and risotto dishes.
I enjoyed the ambiance and music so much the first time I went with my husband, that I chose to overlook the bland dinner. Calamari is a safe choice, but the mussels and wild boar essentially needed to be seasoned at the table. I went again last night with my mother since she wanted to see live music over dinner. I warned her that the food may be bland, but we proceeded to give it another try. She got the sea bass, my husband got the fish of the day, and I got the chicken. The chicken was dry and unseasoned, the sea bass was also dry and unseasoned, and the fish of the day . . . need I say more? I don't mind topping up with a bit of salt, but this tastes as if nothing was added. Maybe it's the fact that both of my reservations are at 9PM and the chefs arms are too sore to shake on some seasoning by the time I arrive (lol, I keep trying to give the benefit of the doubt.). You'd think butter, lemon, salt, something? It tastes as if the food is put into the oven with nothing, absolutely no love. AVOID these options. I don't plan, however, on working my way to the menu to give you any other options.
I had a miniature lemon meringue pie for dessert which was tasty. It seems to be defrosted and then torched - but the flavor was spot on. The crème brûlée was a huge disappointment for both my mom and husband. It was so thin, gelatinous, and had a thick layer of sugar. The ratio of thick sugar to the thin custard base just made it unpleasant.
Now, I'm an experienced cook so maybe that's the difference between this review and others. I could easily have made a better meal. It's not the best feeling to pay these prices and get such an underwhelming dinner. We didn't get the "how is everything?" spiel from the waiter because I think the answer was evident on our faces. I personally will go again for the music, but I'll be sticking to drinks and maybe french fries and calamari from now on. Those seem to be a safe bet!
Having just arrived in Montreal, we walked around the city and then read reviews of the places we liked. Modavie won the challenge of being able to cater for me with my food issues. From the start, our experience was excellent and our server, Xavier, was just great. Friendly, helpful and went above and beyond to sort out my meal, which was super. We both thought how well managed the restaurant was, everyone we saw worked as a team, it all ran like clockwork. A really nice night in Montreal
Excellent wine list, good music and great service. However, the food was just fair.
Delicious food, outstanding service and authentic atmosphere. The live music was an added bonus.
Best restaurant for us in Old Montreal. Great food, service, local entertainment at reasonable prices.
I made a reservation here for my girlfriends birthday. We had tickets to the Cirque du Soleil and told the hostess we were running late so unfortunately only had time for appetizers and drinks. The hostess then wouldn’t give us a table or let us sit in the dining room because we weren’t having a full meal, even though she knew it was my girlfriends birthday.
Shame on you and horrible service!!!!!!
Wonderful special event dinner as always. Service and food were excellent.
Modavie was as amazing as it was when I was there 4 years ago. This time I had 4 people with me and we went there on my recommendation. It did not and does not ever disappoint. Two of the people I was with said it was the best lamb they have ever had, and went to have it again for lunch the day we were leaving Montreal. We will return on our next trip. Beautiful restaurant, very friendly people and fun, lively music.
Quickly seated despite being very busy. Sat directly in front of the musicians which we loved. Shared a lovely beet salad which was delicious. Steak Frites for my main course - steak was nice if a little undercooked - huge amount of fries! Felt like we were constantly being upsold but overall experience was very good!
Amazing food!!!! Beautiful restaurant and location.
We went to Modavie to enjoy appies, drinks, and desserts and to listen to a set of Blues music while out of town. We were refused service after we told them that we were not ordering a formal dinner (we had just eaten on the plane). The manager proceeded to inform us that it was against the law for us to be at their restaurant if we were not going to order dinner, and that we would have to leave. This was after we had called weeks ahead to inform them of our plans and to book the reservation. At no time were we told that we had to order dinner prior to us arriving. So, we had to order food that we didn't eat just so that we could stay at the restaurant.
Not only am I disappointed with the dishonesty (it's not against the law to only order appies, desserts, and drinks as opposed to a dinner), but the waiter went out of his way to ignore our table for most of the night.
Clearly, our business is not welcome, and we will not be returning the next time we visit Montreal.
Reasonable priced bistro style restaurant in the old part of Montreal. Food was good, service friendly and prompt. They had a duo playing music upstairs which was very nice, would recommend.
Trip to montreal
Experience a oublier! Menu abrégé pour la F1 ! le mentionner lors de la reservation aurait ete un minimum
Usually love Modavie but the menu was limited for the Gran Prix and the selection was not that great. Our waiter was fantastic but we were in a room with a party of at least 20 women who were extremely loud.
Nourriture très moyen pour le prix. Bon service et bonne ambiance en général. Décor plus jazz serait un atout
The service is painfully slow. There is no sense of urgency and it is clear the servers are removed from communication with the kitchen, the runners and bus people.
Once the server takes the order, their job seems to be done here. Empty glasses left for over 10 minutes, and a different person presenting the food when it finally comes, just seems to be off from most severs who seem to take full responsibility of their tables.
Based on the reviews I have to say the place lived up to them. Service was great, the food was exceptional but the only downside was the noise
We really enjoyed the restaurant. The food was very good. The ambiance was great and music was just loud enough to be able to still hold a conversation easily. We really liked our waiter too. Overall would definitely come again the next time we are in Montreal.
Good pop jazz/blues in main room started at 7 pm when we were there on a Wednesday.
