Seven nights a week, live local bands take the stage at Montreal’s hottest live music bar and bistro. Modavie’s spirited setting encompasses two intimate floors and sets the scene for a night of great tunes and top dining . The bistro’s far-reaching wine menu hits just the right notes and helps round off succulent lamb, fish, beef, duck and inspired pasta dishes.
Excellent food and service I would go there again!
Had dinner here for the first time and absolutely loved it. I have Celiacs and the staff was very knowledgeable and careful. Each time a plate was brought to the table, the staff confirmed it was gluten free and that they had taken care to avoid cross contamination. The food was delicious, especially the lamb and saffron risotto. Will definitely come back!
My husband and I had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Modavie. We were greeted early and seated at our request near the fabulous jazz trio. Our server, Francois, made sure we had everything we needed. He was knowledgeable and very attentive. We had salmon gravlax. It was superb. For entrees we had sesame crusted rack of lamb that was beautifully prepared and Wild Boar Osso Buco with risotto that was seasoned well and tender. We loved the ambiance and hope to return on our next trip to Montreal.
We arrived on time for our 17:00 table, and the manager made a point of saying he would need our table by 18:30, even though the restaurant was completely empty. Food arrived in 1 min, which is a terrible sign. I am not a chef, but I lived in Paris and this is one tourist trap of a bistrot. Food is really bad. Sonia was a great waitress.
Bonjour MBornia, I was very disappointed to read of your experience. Whilst an apology will regrettably not alter the outcome of your experience on this occasion, I do extend it with all sincerity. I certainly empathize regarding the points you mention in your review, especially concerning the quality of the food. The way you were greeted is certainly not acceptable and will be addressed with the concerned party. Hopefully we will be able to offer you a flawless experience soon!
I really enjoyed dining at Modavie! The food was great and the live music made our night! We went on a Tuesday so an acoustic guitarist was playing, and he played and sang fanastically.
Bonjour KayH, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your recent Expérience Modavie and how much you liked our Tuesday artist-Sam! We will make sure he gets your kind words. Hopefully you will come visit us sometime soon.
Exceptional wait staff. The service here, compared to other restaurants we visited, was above and beyond what was expected.
Bonjour Raymond, We appreciate the kind words about the friendly and amazing customerservice you received here at Modavie. I will make sure to pass the word to all our service team. We hope to have the chance to serve you once more soon!
Slightly overwhelming experience - very busy and crammed entrance. The live music was a little too loud. It was very hard to carry a conversation (the tables next to us were speaking very loudly to drown out the music). The service was ok - offered in French and in English. Wasn’t a huge fan of the paper “table cloth” - felt messy. Not the place to enjoy a conversation with your meal - zero privacy. Food was good though!
Bonjour NatalieN, First off, I would like to thank you for your feedback , you are absolutely right. Our busy time is not and excuse for the problems you have experienced and we strive to create an ambiance that is above and beyond expectations. I hope you'll return again to feel a flawless experience, improved from your most recent.
This is our first visit to Montréal. There are more restaurants in Old Montréal than you can count. Picking the right one can seem impossible. However, we are glad we selected Modavie. We were looking for an enjoyable French dinner and we found it here. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive. He helped us make some excellent wine choices including a French after dinner liquor he encouraged us to try over our original selection of Port. We were looking for the French experience after all. Dinner was amazing. Modavie is a busy place. We requested the room with live music. Despite a crowded dining area and excellent duo performing a nice selection of tunes we could still carry on a conversation. The music was performed by an excellent female vocalist accompanied by a keyboard player. They played a wide variety of songs that our table enjoyed. Our final bill was not cheap but reasonable for what we experienced. This place is definitely worth checking out when visiting Montréal.
Bonjour Tim, Thank you for choosing Modavie out of the thousands in Montreal. We are happy a member of our staff was able to make such a good impression on you and suggest French wines that paired well with your evening. Also, we are glad you appreciated our live band that night. We hope to have the pleasure of serving you again someday, all the best to you!
Great food and wonderful ambience. Loved the jazz music.
Bonjour JaniceD, We are glad you enjoyed your Expérience Modavie and took time to write us those kind words. We hope to have the pleasure to serve you again sometime soon!
Incredible date night at Modavie. Food was incredible, and the ambiance provided by the live music was astounding. Absolutely would return. Old Montreal is a great scene in the evening, and Modavie was the perfect complement.
Bonjour Maddie, Thank you for giving us a perfect rating and for recommending our restaurant here. I'm sure our entire staff enjoyed catering to your needs as much as you enjoyed your experience. Take care and we hope to serve you again in a near future!
Most delicious food. Typically in Montreal I encounter poor to subpar service, but our server was energetic, attentive, and nice. My second time at Modavie, and will be back for a third!
Bonjour OliviaM, Thank you for your kind words. We are a very passionate team here at Modavie and strive to give the best experience to our guests. We are happy that our efforts to give the best customer service possible paid off on the night of your visit! We hope to have the pleasure of serving you again soon.
Loved the food and the service!
Ok restaurant . Service could be more timely. Friendly staff however
We ask for 2 different rissotos. totaly lack of flavor, we had to ask for more parmegiano chews in order to eat it. Salad was ok. Place is nice but after 30min of live woman singing we just wanted to leave.
Service was ok
Really enjoyed the live jazz music, creates a nice ambiance. Service was good, food was decent and portion was good. The lamb poutine & fried calamari were pretty good. Beef tartare was really good and came with lots of fries. Penne Bolognese was alright. The bathroom was quite messy and could use a regular cleaning.
Loved it here. Waiter had great suggestions for food and wine and we had a table close to window on side street- view of outside and a bit less noisy. We felt in our own space. Love music and lively area of town. Was delicious and great ambiance. Will definitely return on next trip.
Modavie was one of the highlights of our trip to Montreal it exceeded every expectation with great service and especially great food. I had the wild boar Osso bucco which was to die for the meat just falling off the bone and my girlfriend had the salmon which was also amazing and to top it up the reservation was set on the second floor with live music. New favorite restaurant.
Soggy french fries. Acidic Bolognese. Uninspired cassoulet. No bread. Nothing was terrible, but there was not much love in the cooking here.
Clean, convenient, good value and very good service. We enjoyed our casual dinner.
Great restaurant brunch was amazing!
Great place, great food! Unfortunately ran out of one of the main dishes on the menu :(
Also next time wouldn’t sit too close to jazz band just way too loud! Great band though, just too close...can’t have a conversation being too close to band!
They are known for their lamb, but we tried a few other things — risotto & a chicken Cesar salad. Risotto was dry and clumpy, chicken from the salad was a boiled chicken breast with no flavour. Creme brûlée came out with a soft top (not hard) and wasn’t the best in flavour.
Pros of the place are: their charcuterie board was very good, and the server had a great knowledge of wine pairings. The live band creates a nice ambiance (although it is loud so if you want a cozy quiet place, avoid on a weekend evening).
Great food great music!
Delicious food and wine. Reservations are needed in case being busy. Like the live music atmosphere.
Our table was situated away from the live blues band so we were able to easily have a conversation and enjoy the fantastic music. The environment felt French, had a cosy eclectic artsy flair, which I liked.
The service was excellent from hostess to server. Very accommodating, attentive, knowledgeable.
The food was good. The flavour was there but my medium rare lamb chops i ordered were done well, my husband had the wild boar osso buco and the was tougher than it should have been. The saffron risotto had wonderful flavour combinations and it was a nice surprise. The food came too quickly which leads me to question if some dishes are partially cooked. Over all we had a nice date!
Appetizers were fantastic. All of them. I ordered a Vesper martini and it was made right ( does mot happen often). Mains though were a let down. Risotto in wild boar osso bucco was clumped up and dry, definitely precooked, felt like yesterdays meal reheated. Lamb burger looked great on the menu but the dish was underwhelming. Throwing a bucket of fries on the plate does not make things tastier....steak was so so at best, in the end it while dinner felt like a tourist pre theater menu, made in advance, reheated to order... bit of a letdown
My girlfriend and I went for our anniversary. I surprised her with this place and her expectations were exceeded. She didn’t break up with me so thanks Modavie👍🏼
If you like to listen to live music while enjoying a bite to eat this is your place.
There was plenty of seating for the start of the dinner rush. Our waiter was fantastic and was always nice enough to make recommendations about what drinks were his favorite or what dessert is really popular there. The food was just the right amount that you were full but still had enough room for dessert. The restaurant filled quickly with people but it was lovely and not to overcrowded. The location is close to the pier which was amazing to walk down after eating the great food. Highly recommend.
We really enjoyed our dining experience at Modavie! Waitstaff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and they never kept us waiting. Food was delicious and so were the cocktails!
Great venue great service they cared about your experience did not feel rushed “would you like to wait a bit for your desert” at a busy restaurant how nice is that Great food great night
We enjoyed Modavie twice during our Montreal vacation. Lamb chops are excellent. Menu has plenty of variety. The music- Tuesday musician- is worth going for. No cover charge. Our server, Eloise, made us feel like family. We returned the 2nd time because she helped us select just the right wine and, food. Highly recommend.
It was my girlfriend and my 5th year anniversary. We sat by the stage and got to see some great live music, plus they ambience was great. Food was good too... I had the salmon and my girlfriend had the penne dish, both were excellent. My only issue might have been the calamari starter wasn’t crispy enough, but that is reaching for something to have an issue with. 9/10 will definitely be back.
What a terrific spot for a cocktail, a meal with friends, or both. The staff — and Lorenzo — Almaden’s is feel at home.
Way too noisy.
Bonjour, Thank you for taking time to review your Expérience Modavie! We strive to create an ambiance that is above and beyond expectations, therefore we will take your words into consideration for the future. We hope to have the pleasure of serving you again sometimes soon.
Let me start off by saying that the majority of TripAdvisor reviews on Modavie are great, that’s why we picked it. My husband and I went last night for my birthday. I made a mistake about our reservation, thought it was 6:30 but it was really at 7:00 pm. The receptionist and owner were there to greet us and said it wouldn’t be a problem to seat us earlier. It started off really well and just went south after that. Our waiter was disconnected and it seemed more of a bother that he was working. The cheese/charcuterie board we ordered was pretty much the saving grace of our evening. I’m not sure why everyone on the reviews rates the lamb as “out of this world”, but my husband and I both agree it was under-seasoned and underwhelming. My saffron risotto was grainy and flavorless. After we were done “eating”, we sat for 21 minutes waiting for someone to come take our plates, while our waiter was busy running around setting other tables. The couple beside us even remarked how long it’s been since they were waiting for their bill to leave. As soon as the waiter came and asked if we were done, we couldn’t wait to just pay and leave. Definitely not how we wanted to spend my birthday. If you want a good glass of wine, mediocre service and underwhelming food, this is your place.
Bonjour, we would like to thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback about your recent anniversary visit at Modavie. We are truly sorry to hear about the unpleasant restaurant experience you had. This is an absolutely unacceptable level of service and we clearly missed he mark that night. As for the underwhelming food, a thigh follow-up as been made by our chef concerning the right seasoning and flavors. We hope to be able to serve you a flawless experience on a future visit!
The steak that I had was more like beef stew. I have called ahead of time to make sure they have a jazz band on hand but turns out, it wasn't anything even close to jazz, more like folk music. What a waste of my time.
The mussels were awesome. Only downside to our meal was that they had no beer available that night because the restaurant was out of CO2 for their draft beer selection and they dont carry bottled beer. Since my husband is a beer drinker, this lessened an otherwise pleasurable experience. He wondered why they didnt go get some bottled beers until their taps were working.
Bonjour MaryKayC, We are glad you enjoyed the food here at Modavie! We are quite sorry the absence of beer inconvenienced your evening. In Quebec, it is unfortunately illegal to buy beer from a reseller with the intent of selling it in a restaurant. As a wine bar, our focus is the wine selection we offer and thus we do not have room for bottled beer. Hopefully we'll get to serve you a flawless Expérience Modavie soon.
Loved this restaurant. Located on a side street but not far from the old city or other hotels. Small restaurant but we were seated fast without a reservation on a Monday night around 7 pm. The place filled up quickly...not a table to be had. Unique menu: I had the scallops and endive. Delicious and not like any I have ever had before. My husband had their white beet salad and he raves about it. Would definitely go back if we were staying longer. Enjoy!
Bonjour LaurieS, Thank you for taking the time to write those kind words! We are delighted you had a great Expérience Modavie and enjoyed the menu to it's full potential. Hopefully, we'll get to serve you again in the future.
