MODERN STEAK on Stephen Avenue
Our decor is warm and modern. The tradition has always been dark wood, leathers and a muted palate for a steakhouse. We broke the mould and decided to add hand selected music that reflects us! We’re more like Jay Z and less like Sinatra.
We only serve ranch specific Alberta Beef. That means we don’t serve beef from anywhere else on the planet. We know our farmers and ranchers personally and respect the hard work they put into produce our beef. We like our beef to be, hormone & antibiotic free and pasture raised. Happy cattle make for better steaks.
We are one of just a handful of steakhouses in Canada that serves, Grass-fed, Grain-fed, Wet-aged, Dry-aged and Waygu beef 365 days a year. Our beef is always fresh never frozen.
We use an 1800o Infrared Grill to cook your steaks. The high heat creates a flavourful crust on outside of the steak and leaves a juicy centre.
George was a great server! He definitely knew the menu inside and out made great suggestions. Made for a great night!
We went to messenger steak for a birthday and it was by far the best experience we’ve had at any restaurant. Brendan was our server and he made our experience so fun and enjoyable. Being in the service industry ourselves we cant say enough great things about him and the service we received! Money very well spent!
Great food and great value on drinks
I used the Wednesday night date night deal. The steak was warm not hot and tasted ok but I've had better. Very good service and you won't get a better deal for that price.

What a deal for Date Night on Wed.
I always love going to modern steak. We especially like taking advantage of their Wednesday steak date nights. However tonight was a bit disappointing. The pop corn and fries and mushrooms were the stars. We ordered a flat iron Wagyu steak ( as we normally do) and my steak particularly had various degrees of doneness and had two hard "string like" ligaments through it. We were not sure we actually got the steak we ordered.
We love this place but will probably stick with the Kensington location.
the service was incredible food came to our table super fast and on time. In my opinion for the price of all of the food in the menu the food is not amazing

The place is very nice, I won't return, I couldn't even talk to my friend across the table, it was SO LOUD and if I am to pay $250 for a meal, I certainly would like to be able to visit with my guest(s).
The parking is TERRIBLE around there, we were late for our reservation because we couldn't find parking and of course it is expensive, unless you can find street parking, I paid for 2 hours and totally forgot about the time, came out to a $65 ticket (not at all any fault of the restaurant), so that made the evening even MORE costly.
The staff you have were wonderful, very accommodating and the food was good, I ordered a medium rare steak and it came out medium, however I couldn't find the server, so I did eat it (hence food was good, not great), I do like it done a bit more. I ordered a bottle of wine and I had to search down the server at the end to cork it for me to take home.
I have a really bad knee and didn't realize I had to go upstairs, the hostess immediately offered the elevator; which was awesome and very appreciated.
We had a team dinner with our American coworkers and they wanted The true Alberta beef experience, so we went to modern. The one it was his first time to Calgary and he was in awe of the whole experience.
The old fashions were flying at our table, the staff was great in refilling our truffle popcorn a few times. For apps we had the crab in the jar, modern tartare, waygu dumplings, and waygu coconut lime meatloaf. All apps were amazing and my boss says he could eat 5 orders of the dumplings and my coworker was going on about the crab in the jar. For entrees half went with the brant lake and the other 2 had the ribeye from Modern steaks own bull. By far the best steaks all of us ever had! They can’t wait to come back again. For dessert we had creme brûlée and baked Alaska. It was nice to see our American coworkers enjoy a true Alberta meal that represents everything a meal should be: local, fresh, flavourful and filling.

Full 5 stars. Went with my wife for our anniversary. Food was phenomenal, and our server, George, took fantastic care of us, great recommendations and made sure we had a great anniversary dinner. Highly recommend.
Every item on the menu is amazing. On this trip to Modern Steak we had the warm crab in a jar, wagyu dumplings and the filet trio. The warm crab in a jar is one of the best things on the many. It is so good you want to lick every last bit out of the jar. The service was great and the wait staff was very knowledgeable. I look forward to returning in the near, near future.
The attentive service and delicious food made this a truly excellent dining experience. My guest had never been to Modern Steak and was impressed with our server's account of the sources of the various options of steak and her recommendations for sides. We were able to take our time and enjoy the whole experience without being rushed.
I have been to Modern Steak before and really enjoyed it. This time I was happy enough but the steak was not cooked to my specifications. Medium should at least be warm through out, the last quarter of my flat iron was raw....and I do mean raw. My friend ordered well done and the juices were still red. Super disappointed in the steaks BUT, everything else was very good. (That said, the gravy on the poutine that the server raved about was nothing special, in fact we didn't really like it either.)
Staff was very knowledgeable on the backstory of the restaurant and provided some great recommendations.
Everything was great. Service was outstanding, the food was outstanding, but I thought the area around the table could have been a bit cleaner. That; however, did not ruin my experience.

Always a great meal at Modern Steak, with fantastic and knowledgeable service to go along with a great set up. Wine selection is top notch, and the share side plates add variety to the incredible steak experience.

The dishes at Modern Steak are fabulous and so flavourful ! You will not be disappointed.
I was however disappointed that we had to dine upstairs rather than on the main floor as I have always appreciated the ambience downstairs.
Absolutely fantastic meal all around! George was an outstanding server, so knowledgeable and friendly!! We highly enjoyed our experience at Modern and would love to come back again on our next visit to Calgary!

What a wonderful evening! Our waiter was so helpful explaining all the different steaks and was very friendly and attentive during our entire time there. We shared the 3 different filets and they were done to perfection. Definitely will be going back soon!!

Food and service was fine ... tremendous amount of trying to up-sell products, however quite friendly. Dollar for Dollar there are better steak house options in Calgary.
The food was ok, but a bit overpriced. We had the $128 Tomohawk steak, which was almost all fat...that was a bummer. The rest was pretty good, but not good enough to go back a second time..
George was our server and he provided excellent advice on the menu. The steak was so good and required no add-ons as per George’s advice. Thanks George for making us feel special on our anniversary! Highly recommend for a nice dinner out.
The restaurant is quite pleasant but for the price the food is not up to par. The tomahawk steak was tough and the loaded baked potato was far from loaded and tasteless. The crab appetizer was excellent. Our waiter worked hard but didn’t ask us if we wanted coffee or tea after the meal. My wife enquired if they had decaf latte and they brought it but didn’t ask the rest of the guests if they wanted anything. My wife’s chicken dish was lacking in flavour.it was a nice atmosphere but I wouldn’t go back.
I had only been to the Kensington location and years ago. We went to the downtown and I do prefer the ambience better on Kensington. We were upstairs in the bar. Service was fantastic but I was not impressed with the food. We had the stuffed calamari with chorizo and it was a very weird combination and texture was not pleasant. Then I had the flat iron waygu-Med rare and it was pretty darn rare. I usually will say something and I did about my calamari but the first few bites of my steak seamed fine but unevenly cooked. I LOVED my first experience with them but that was 5 years ago...cooks change but maybe will just try something different
My filet was slightly overdone and too salty. Music was too loud but I never mentioned it
We had never been there before and the waitress even asked. As complex as the menu was and the different kinds of beef it had, it would have been nice for her to talk about each so we could talk and choose better. Had their benchmark prime and wasn’t even close to some of the best steaks I have had. Desert was the Madagascan Vanilla Creme Brûlée and would have expected freshly fired top but it wasn’t but flavor was good.
We had a great anniversary evening at Stephen Deere’s Modern Steak on Stephen Ave. It started with a warm welcome from everyone we met and a tour of the new space from Stephen himself. Outstanding service from Brennan, great food and wine and a lively atmosphere all combined for a wonderful experience. Thanks everyone. Can’t wait to go back and visit Modern Ocean and the soon to open rooftop lounge.
I went on a Wednesday for "Date Night" and the value of what you get can't be beaten. The Waygu Flat Iron was amazing, and our server was fantastic even with how busy it was. I would not hesitate to come back, especially on a Wednesday for that deal!
Dinner was excellent, featured wines were top notch. Great value and attentive service from beginning to end. We were even treated to a lovely birthday dessert! Will be back very soon.
My husband and I have had 2 amazing dining experiences at Modern Steak in the past few months. Definitely one of Calgary's top restaurants not to miss. Great options from steak to seafood, cocktails, wine, and more. Staff are extremely customer service focused! We will definitely be back!
First of all the wine we wanted was not in stock. If you are running this high end of an establishment you show know you are out of a wine. We were not offered any sort of compensation. My steak was very fatty and was not as hot as it should have been coming out of a 800F grill. It must have sat under the heat lamp for quite some time. The service was brutal. She didn’t know the menu and took our order but forgot what we had ordered. She came back and asked what size of filet I wanted. I ordered the ribeye wagu not a filet. Desert menu was not good enough so we walked down the street to another place for desert. For the price of this restaurant I would recommended Hy’s 100 times before Modern.
