Cajun
Welcome to Mulate’s! We are proudly family-owned and operated in New Orleans since 1990! Located conveniently on the corner of Julia Street and Convention Center Blvd, across from the Riverwalk and Convention center, Mulate’s is known as the original Cajun restaurant™, famous for preserving and celebrating the food, music and culture found in the small towns and along the bayous of south Louisiana. Mulate’s serves up traditional Cajun cuisine like gumbo and jambalaya, as well as some more modern Louisiana favorites like chargrilled oysters and southern fried chicken sandwiches. Our menu, designed by second-generation owner, Monique Boutté Christina, reflects an ongoing evolution of Louisiana cuisine. Don’t miss our specialty cocktails and local beers on draft!
Please note: Our live Cajun music will be returning late Summer 2021.

Great Cajun food. I’m a Yankee, so I can’t get decent shrimp, catfish, etc. at home, but I used to live in New Orleans, so I know a bit about what I’m talking about. Also a pretty good Cajun band. The music makes the slightly-slow service to not be a problem.

A fun night out in New Orleans. Food was mediocre but my visit was more about the experience. Fun Cajun band playing with couples dancing to the music on the dance floor. Noise was loud as expected but added to the ambiance.

Had an enjoyable meal and entertainment. Would recommend to anyone visiting New Orleans and what to sample the food and music of the Cajans. Service was great and we were not rushed to order and after eating were told to stay a while and enjoy the music. A nice change from other places where they want you out to "turnover the table".

They had way more people dining than they could manage. They messed up or orders. My drink had an ant in it and then they charged us for things we didn’t order. Our server was obviously stressed because of the number of people she had to take care of. I would not come back here. Very poor dining experience.

Good was very good. BBQ shrimp delicious, grilled alligator was excellent as well. The chargrilled oysters were as good or better than anyones in New Orleans that I have eaten. The only thing we didn’t care for was the Gumbo. Service was great. Definitely will return when we are in Nee Orleans

It was ok. Food was decent but not the best Cajun in Nola for sure. The music was nice but the musicians were not particularly engaging. Again we have definitely heard better and livelier music other places. Our fault for dropping our standards. But it was really busy so others likely have a better opinion and we are outliers.

I ordered the fried oysters and they were overcooked to the point of being hard and dry. My friend had the new to the menu roasted oysters and they were Wonderful. I know in a busy kitchen things happen. Just remind them not to overcook those tender oysters.

The music was good and service was attentive. Beware though, they add an 18% service charge on top a mandatory 18% tip for parties of 5 or more. The food was nothing to be desired! Overpriced and the fees didn’t help. Would not recommend.

Incidentally, our dinner was on my bd. However, we actually just happened to be in town and I was longing for some live Cajun music. That night‘s performance, however, was about as mediocre as the attendance was low. Surprised me on a Saturday night. Years ago, @your place and at good old Michaud‘s, that was very different. I still own videos I took in the 1990s when your place was music with a dinner. Now it felt like dinner with some background music. Still loved being there. If only for some memories.

I do not like kitchy, touristy, restaurants. So I did not have high expectations for Mulates. However, I was pleasantly surprised. We went to the zydeco music, which was wonderful, and I started with a Sazerac. The Sazerac was delicious. My husband got the Catfish and it was buttery and flaky and delicious. I couldnt decide so I got the chargrilled seafood platter. It came with a small piece of catfish (cajun style) , chargrilled oysters and bbq shrimp. Each was better than the next. The catfish, was flaky and buttery, the shrimp were large and the chargrilled oysters could compete with any of the fancy local restaurants. If you are like me and usually shy away from touristy restaurants, I'd recommend overcoming your reservations and giving Mulates a try

Loved the atmosphere of Mulate’s! It is just what I thought a Cajun dancehall restaurant would be like. The band was great, Zydeco, of course! Red beans and rice and stuffed shrimp were great! The cornbread was sweet and amazing! The etoufee’ was a little salty and thick for my taste. The gumbo tasted burned, I think someone browned the roux a little too long. Overall it was a great experience and I would go back again and give them another try. The waiter was very friendly and attentive, first rate!
