   I have had some time to think about our experience at the Oval Room Brasserie. My husband and I were there to celebrate a special occasion. I was looking forward to it as I normally love the Fort Garry Hotel. I have always liked the restaurant in the past. I like the architecture and the ambience of the building. We started off with two starters – the fromage platter and the salami platter. The cheese platter was good with a variety of four cheeses and some fruit and nuts. It looks as if someone took some care and attention in making a creative plate. The salami was only one kind. It looked as if they slapped down the salami out of a package and put out two small bowls of pickled eggplants and pickles on a charcuterie board. I would have preferred a variety of salami or other meats and accompaniments. Then, we had the calamari. It was not cooked properly at all. I realize it was deep fried, however, the crust was not a crust and fell apart. I could taste the gooey-flour mixture. We decided that we would not proceed at that point in large part because the server told us so many times that there was a two hour seating limit, I lost count. I felt annoyed and rushed. We did have dessert which was quite good and comparable to other places from a similar quality point of view. Overall, IF I wanted a fast food experience, I would have gone to fast food restaurant. We ended up being there for only an hour and a half under the prescribed and mandated two hour limit. What ever happened to civilized dining like Europeans know how to experience and North Americans rush through the tasting experience as if it were a race or a necessity for the restaurant to push through as many people as quickly as possible to earn more capital. I felt as if I was not welcome there at all. I am very disappointed by my experience there and so this is reflected in the rating as I give it a 3 out of a 5 which is barely a passing grade. The team failed miserably.

    We love the room, and have been many times. However our latest visit was really lacking. Our mains took a long time to come, and when they did was cool to warm at best, definitely not hot. We did alert our waiter and the manager, and they offered to take a couple of dishes off of our bill or reheat our food - which seemed a strange option in the first place for a nice restaurant, to reheat. In the end we were late for the comedy show in the basement we had tickets for at 9:30, so we thanked them for removing the items, paid and left (hungryish). Probably won’t rush back anytime soon.

    It’s only the age of the hotel and the ambience of the Oval Room you’re there for. The food is okay, nothing great. The service is mediocre. Wasn’t impressed to be honest. For that price level in such an opulent, historic hotel, the hospitality experience needs to significantly improve. It’s a convenient place to eat if you’re staying in the hotel.

    Food was average. Service was slow to begin. Sat waiting for over 10 minutes just to have someone give me water and then walk away.     Room is beautiful, brunch menu is limited and overpriced. Food came to table hot ordered peameal bacon and eggs came with sourdough toast unfortunately you do not get your choice of bread. Marmalade accompaniment was delicious.
