We visit Poppy approximately once every ~2-3 months because they consistently provide interesting and tasty food and great, personable service.

They have a unique concept in Seattle, bringing both local, fresh, "Northwest" food served as small bites on your plate, but with the advantage that you don't have to share if you don't want to :). There is enough change in the menu to keep things interesting, and they can work with you to create a vegan selection.

In addition to the main dishes (thali's), we really appreciate their creative cocktails, which change frequently to match the season, but also have some standards that we look forward to (the Papi Delicious!).

The servers know their menus, are attentive, not snobby, and not fake. We always see the chef (Jerry) in the restaurant, so the fact that he's involved on a daily basis shows you how much it's a labor of love.

It's a fun place to bring visitors to and it always gets rave reviews from them as well.

Great assortment of unique flavors. My pork shoulder with Kimchi was delicious. Even the cauliflower side, which I typically do not like, tasted great.

I wanted to love Poppy. Sadly, I didn't. Having said that, the homemade sodas were intriguing, & the mushroom toast as appetizer was splendid. The atmosphere of the place was pleasant enough, service seemed adequate, but I found the the majority of the food lacking, the restaurant was cold, &, frankly, I walked away feeling letdown. Pricey thalis platters seem more a gimmick to warrant $30 or more a plate than reflective of real value/quality. I specifically requested a meal with no fennel, stressing the point several times, & was assured the chef would make a substitution to a fennel-free dish. Didn't happen, which not only meant I had the awful taste of fennel in my mouth as I tried to enjoy the rest of my meal, but also that I couldn't eat part of my dinner. Then, I was presented with a bill with a service fee already included for a party of two. I've waited tables half my life, so I totally understand adding on a tip for larger parties, but adding a tip for small parties seems unnecessary, & just in bad taste. As I stated, I've waited tables, & so I always tip 30% or more, b/c I know how challenging the work can be; to be honest, I was so dismayed at the tip being added on for me, that I almost left it at that, ie. I was going to tip less than my customary 30% amount. In the end, I added onto the tip, so my server received more than 30% for what was really very average service. I walked right past her on the way out, she was standing at the hostess platform, it was a slow night, yet she didn't bother to acknowledge me, to say 'good night', 'thank you', ANYTHING. IMO, that's what happens when you guarantee a 20% tip to servers, no matter what. They become complacent, entitled, & ungracious. Overall, color me unimpressed with Poppy. :/

Myself, my wife and two daughters (8 and 11) visited Poppy for my birthday recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our two girls enjoyed the small dishes of tasty delights and nothing was too spicy for them. Service was great too. Thanks.

It was for a birthday. Food was great, drinks were great! The service was lagging though. We sat for 20 minutes with empty drinks waiting for someone to come (we tried to get a few people’s attention too.)

Overall, the food made up for everything, we will totally be back.

The food was very excellent: interesting and well prepared! My wife and our friends loved their meals. For me the downside was that the kitchen served me a salad with nuts even though I had twice told the server that I had a food allergy to nuts. For a restaurant as good as Poppy, especially one that automatically adds a 20% service charge, this kind of mistake should not happen, and if it does, the staff should give more than a passing apology!

Still My Favorite

This has been my favorite Seattle restaurant since it opened. I went again recently and the food and service were as exceptional as ever. This can be a special occasion place or a regular evening out on the town. The food is unique - tastes and flavors you will not find anywhere else - this I promise.
Love this place!

Hadn't been to Poppy for some time now, and we had one of our best meals yet there. We ordered the thali style main courses, my wife and I both having the vegetarian option. There were 6 dishes on the platter, all of which were top notch. The chef at Poppy has a wonderful ability to create dishes that should not work and make them work very, very well. The flavors mix wonderfully, contrasting as they are, everything blending beautifully. The only disappointments were in the extra $1.50 for the naan and the desserts tend to be a bit sweet for my taste. Everything else, superb.

I have been to Poppy several times over the last 8 years. It has always been delicious but two nights ago it was tasteless! The Goan curry had no flavor. I was shocked. The eggplant pastites were dry and overly starchy--wrong proportions of chickpea flour to eggplant for sure.

The mushroom toast was the only delicious thing we ate.

The restaurant was almost empty from 6-7:30 on a Sunday night. I was surprised to see that when I arrived but after my dining experience and the extreme decline in culinary yumminess, I now understand why. Will never return to Poppy. So sad as that was really a great delicious place before...

If you like something different than this place is worth the trip. Nothing like it in Seattle. The tastes that are combined on the thali are wonderful and always changing. The hostess can't be more pleasant and always makes you feel welcome. I can't say enough good things about this place.

Jerry Traunfeld is a James Beard award winning chef. My husband and I often go for happy hour in the bar. The non happy hour bar menu is great, as well. On Friday we had dinner in the dining room. There are choices of thalis, with a main dish , and wonderful sides. I went with the vegetarian option (but I often have the duck confit). My main was eggplant and chickpea cakes on a bed of caramelized onions and chanterelles. My sides included some imaginative salads and a heavenly curried pumpkin soup. My husband’s main was the Goan coconut curried salmon. Really imaginative, wonderful food.

I came here for my birthday celebration. The service is underwhelming and the food was mediocre. For $50+ /person meal, I expected more. The salmon curry almost tasted like two different dishes. Fish is super bland while swimming in a bowl of curry soup...curry is pretty watery. The only thing I liked are the small dishes which came with the main entree. The dessert platter is nothing special. =(

A friend and I went for dinner. We had the cheese flan, cocktails, salmon thali, and dessert thali. The cocktails were interesting- not cloying or sweet. The food was really good - after living in India for years it was evocative of India and fun w/o being derivative or pretentious. The thali portion was not huge so good for sharing with a starter and desserts-but we added a naan. It was a bit busy so an item came out a bit late but the manager treated us to it. The place had real attention to customer experience- including making good on what was ultimately a small miss. I'll definitely go back!

Very good experience. My partner and I shared the Oysters, Fig and Gorgonzola Toast, as well as the Salmon Thali. It was plenty of food and we loved the ambiance of the place. I typically reserve 5 stars for more of the higher end establishments, but that being said, the meal was delicious and we will be sure to come back. Poppy really is a Capitol Hill gem and we enjoyed every moment.

Eating at Poppy is truly an experience. My partner and o took out best friend from the east coast on the last day of restaurant week, and we were quite thankful to squeeze in a reservation. The goat cheese flan and fig toasts were so creamy and rich, and my pork shoulder with pineapple kimchi was absolutely succulent. Our desserts, pear polenta cakes with orange cream sauce, could've been heated up before serving, but the drinks were strong! Service takes their time giving you your food, and they keep everything dark to put off cell phone photography, so they make sure the food is front and center as it should be!

We love poppy. But the wait for our food after ordering was looong. Our reservation was for 8:15pm, we got out of there around 11. The waiter was very apologetic and offered us a $20 gift card. But the place wasn't anywhere near busy.

Incredibly slow.

Drinks took an hour to arrive at our table.

An hour.

Apps arrived 30 minutes later & dinner after another 30.

And then they mixed up our bill with another table. That took 25 minutes for them to correct as they had ran the cards. I fully expect to see both charges on my card once I review my bank account...that's the kind of experience this was.

We were there nearly three hours. No joke!

Beautiful waitress though.

I was very disappointed with my experience at Poppy. We went, with a reservation, for restaurant week on a Monday evening. The prefixed menu we ordered from was not delivered to our table until 1.5 hrs after we originally placed the order. The server provided no explanation apology or acknowledgement of our wait. Once the courses began coming out they were cool and breads were soggy when that was not intended. Lastly we were informed the dessert we ordered 2hrs previously was no longer available. It was hard to enjoy the dishes when they arrived so late and not at their best. If this is how they perform on a Monday I would not recommend returning.

Our Restaurant Week experience at Poppy was disappointing. Water was spilled twice on our table and the busboy didn't offer to clean up after himself. Also, the pork thali was chewy and served lukewarm.
At the end of our meal, the staff refused to accept a valid Open Table gift card because they believed it was a promo code, not a gift card.
I was disappointed after hearing such good things about Poppy over the years. Overall, it had the atmosphere of a fancy Ikea cafeteria.

After reading the reviews, I decided to try Poppy during Restaurant week.
A majority of the reviews mentioned that service was very slow and it was.
The place was not packed when we arrived, a little before 6 on a Sunday.

The food is excellent, combining lots of different flavors and spices which were all complimentary to the main dish. But, 2 hours is how long it took for us to finish our dishes.
We paid for the 2 hr. parking upfront, thinking it would be plenty. I had to flag the waitperson
down and tell her we had 10 min's left to finish our dessert and pay. We received the appe
fairly quickly, but I had to ask for our dinner twice. The explanation was only so many orders go through and we had to wait for the next 2. This tells me our order was not put in immediately, since I saw 2 other tables that were served dinner before us. These tables arrived after us and had a different wait person. Both of these tables left before we even got our dessert. I don't know if we had a new server or what? I do know that someone else brought out our dinner and someone else brought out our dessert as well. Maybe she needed help? 2 hrs. is unacceptable for a 3 course meal. I don't know about the prices since it was rest. week, so I cannot comment on that. The portions were all small, but filling enough for my husband and I. We are not big eaters. The flavors were wonderful, but I wouldn't recommend it for the wait.

The service was so slow that it took us 2 hours to finish a 3-course meal during which they ran out of things we ordered at the beginning of the meal. I ordered a dessert as soon as we were seated and they told me towards the end that all dairy free deserts are gone and offered me fruit instead.

The food's alright. Definitely worth trying, but the service is beyond bad. I guess since they have 20% compulsory gratuity, the staff can not be bothered to be professional.

TL:DR: Ambiance, service and food that are all excellent without fussiness or unwanted pomp.

My lady has raved about Poppy as one of her favorite go-to locations for a fun dining experience. So I rounded up a group of 9 for her mid 30s birthday dinner, and it was a great experience. The restaurant is beautiful in the sense of being very clearly designed in a way where the aesthetics are intentional, but not fussy or extravagant--they're purposeful, lovely, and uncluttered. Our server was clearly a seasoned pro . . . maybe in her mid 40s, and absolutely stellar service. Friendly, engaging, and helpful without a single missed beat or off note the entire night. And the food, well, it was fantastic. Creative dishes that were exceptionally well prepared, and made with incredible, fresh ingredients.

We'll be back again, soon.
