We had a fantastic late afternoon bite and were very impressed by the scrumptious food and incredibly knowleable and fun servers. Thanks so much!
This was a great casual place to meet with friends for conversation over drinks and good food on the patio with the city walking by. Our waitress was very friendly and guided our food choices well. The truffle gnocchi and honey cauliflower were fantastic.
This is a local Toronto restaurant and perhaps one of my favorite! It's easy to get a table here and the menu changes throughout the year and the food is very good. The service is great and the staff are always one of the best parts of the experience. The food is excellently crafted and just so good
Rated “Ambience” as less than I would have because of persistent smokers on the patio. Patio smoking in Toronto isn’t permitted, yet other patrons were smoking just on the other side of the patio on the sidewalk. This meant their secondhand smoke blew across our dinner the entire time and the Portland Variety staff didn’t intervene, and in fact continued to serve them, therefore encouraging the behaviour.
They missed dishes and went, at times, 30 min to an hour without checking on us. We had to inform them of their mistakes. The entire service system they have is broken, someone should be responsible for checking in when food's delivered. No one did. Then they charged us for items that weren't delivered which I had to complain about to get removed. Perhaps if someone took ownership to their issues and attempted to manage their mishaps service would have turned out better.
The food was very good. Bit of rocky start... the first table we chose on the patio was too wobbly and it could not be fixed. We were shown a second table on the patio... as wobbly as the first so we decided to eat indoors rather than have our drinks spill over. The food was very good... but the service was mediocre. I’d asked for my starters to be served the same time as my friend’s main, but the server forgot, I guess, and brought only ONE of my starters. A few minutes passed and I asked the server to take it back to the kitchen and bring all the food together. She returned with the same dish about a minute later and said the other food was coming right out. I’d order a flat white at the end of the meal, which she’d forgotten about by the time we’d asked for the cheque. She did end up comping it, but it was lukewarm by the time we left with it in a to-go cup. Decor is nice and the staff is friendly enough... our could’ve been a bit more attentive, however.
Didn’t eat food.
The website says you can reserve an outdoor table but they do not honour it and it is very misleading.
1. Food was just okay, well below expectations, not nearly good enough to make up for poor service.
2. We believe our server was new and he received zero help from restaurant. Didn’t know menu or specials, limited visits to table which prohibited us from ordering enough drinks to last throughout he meal.
The time it took for our meals to arrive was over the top slow especially given that the restaurant wasn't close to being full. Our waitress was fine -- attentive and friendly -- but something weird must be going on with management or the kitchen. There was also a dish mistakenly delivered to our table -- not what we'd ordered -- so I suspect it's bad management.
Highly recommend it. The vibe was amazing as well. Perfect restaurant to unwind on a Friday evening.
Only downside was due to size, inside was really noisy but everything else was great especially the menu and the cocktails. Their cornish hen and cassava fries with piri piri sauce was pretty fantabulous, and the short ribs were also very good .. but nothing like the cornish hen. The martinis were perfect, a solid wine list, and the special non-milky pure liquer kind of chocolate martini they made for us for desert was astounding!
We liked our dinner so much we went back for lunch today and I had one of the best burgers ever in my life (and I'm in my 60's and eat a good amount of burgers and travel a lot) ... their home made "milk buns" as burger buns were pretty special, burger perfectly cooked and they included a gherkin aoli that was the really unique/never had anything like it/was really good/going to try and make at home. My other half had a lovely perfectly grilled gruyere cheese sammie with proscuitto and tomato ... just perfect. I travel extensively, eat out more than is normal, and am in my dotage very cranky about food ... I would give this a 98.5 out of 100, and the only reason I knock anything off is it can be very loud. Again, could because I'm in my dotage years. If you are anywhere near, you MUST try this place out! We will be coming back to this place the next time we are in Toronto for sure!
Awesome food, Graham rocks!
Took my son and his fiancée to Portland Variety for a fun night out. They have a wide variety of very interesting items on the menu, and great mains. The background noise is energetic (normally a turn off for me) but it was tolerable and we could still chat.
The kitchen and service was - and I mean it - outstanding.
So great! Awesome service and really nice about us bringing our own cake
Great food ! All the tapas we had were excellent - we had a salad, grilled octopus and seafood salad . I would definitely order the octopus again (grilled) it was grilled to perfection ; and whatever it was marinated with was phenomenal! I went a long time ago to the restaurant known as kiwe, and there is no comparison
Loved the shrimp piri and truffle chips. I also had the gnocchi with mushrooms but I wished it had a little more dressing on it. Excellent service and wine selection
My only complaint is that we had to wait for more than half an hour past our reservation time to get a table and I booked a high top but ended up at a regular table. We did get a free sample of bubbly as an apology which was nice.
Great food and atmosphere. Service was slow at times because our server was also tending bar. Therefore things like table clearing and the offering of dessert was delayed. That being said, the staff was very attentive when my friend spilled wine on her scarf, offering club soda and help with soaking. I additionally had a great mocktail, which can sometimes be hard to find! Overall would highly recommend for your next friends gathering. Lively and fun!
Although our dinner was in the middle of a blackout / power outage, the entire staff was accommodating and absolutely amazing!
The food was good, but not overwhelming. We had great service.
Great food, good service. Food is a bit on the spicy side. Prices are on the high side, but worth it.
Great brunch but a bit pricey for what it is. The service was great given how busy it was!
Everything was amazing. Service was a bit slow, but still a nice place to go to.
Great cocktails and sharing plates. You have to get the steak 👌🏼
Great food and a fantastic ambience. Really good cocktails as well. Definitely a recommendation.
The tequila bomb was fun, the venison tartare was great, although some portions good be bigger for price point.
Some of the best food we've ever had. The service was phenomenal- from the wait staff to the chef coming out of the kitchen to check on us. We live 90 minutes away and Portland Variety will definitely be added to our list of places to go for an excellent meal. Food was fresh, tasty and creative.
A little mix up about the menu at the beginning but everything was great. Food was good and came in good intervals over the evening. Waitress checked on us regularly, but not too much.
Great first experience. Went for Valentine pre fix menu. So tasty. Great vibe, friendly staff!
Celebrating a Valentines lunch, food was delicious, although a bit smaller serving size. Casual seat yourself setting with half the patrons eating lunch and the other half working with a coffee.
Overall very impressed.
The food was very plain and not very favourable. .
Delicious!! All courses of our meal were great. Staff was professional as one can expect downtown. Nice ambiance.
Such a disappointing experience. Hosted 7 clients for a holiday lunch and despite our hefty spend, we couldn’t get any server to help us. One waitress we flagged down pointed at another staff and told us to try him. There were only about 4 tables occupied and it was shockingly bad service. I will never be back. Too bad as I love the half price wine Monday’s!
There were cool cocktails and great food! We really enjoyed sharing so many different dishes.
We loved the food here and had a nice quiet table. One huge complaint was our waiter, who failed to tell us (party of 6) that gratuity was included and in fact, even initially when asked said it wasn't. He proceeded to let all of us tip until one of our friends noticed the issue on his bill. It was very unprofessional and left a bad taste with all of us despite the rest of the experience being pleasant.
Staff ignored us. Age-ism? It sure felt like it!
They were very slow. After ordering a coffee following the meal - we weren't asked if we wanted milk, cream or sugar.
First thing I want to mention is I stopped by this restaurant earlier this summer & took a look at the menu. Oxtail Gnocchi caught my eye & attempted to order it to go. I was told they don't do take-out.
Decided to bring my friend to Portland Variety for dinner. I was excited to finally get to try their Oxtail Gnocchi! Flavour was there, but I was like where's the rest of it?! lol. I assumed dish is an entree being listed under "Plates". Very little oxtail & by no means an entree. Quite frankly should be listed under their "Bites" menu.
In addition to the Gnocchi, friend & I shared Cassava Fries, Venison Tartare, Mushroom Salad and 2 desserts: Banana Mille Feuille & Panna Cotta. Food was decent, more of it would have been better. Desserts were OK. The only other option was Beignets. How do you not offer a chocolate dessert?! They were out of this, out of that. No ice wine. Annoying.
Music was too loud. It did get quieter later on as the restaurant emptied.
I understand what Tapas/small plates are but seriously?! 2 healthy & fit women, some wine, 4 plates & 2 desserts. $165 bill, left restaurant still hungry. Not good, and I must state that is the very first time I recall ever leaving a restaurant hungry.
Ran out of olive brine
Our sever was rude and I think forgot to enter our order because all the tables around us came after and got their food first. When we asked why it was taking so long he didn't really care. Finally the manager came by and she was lovely and apologized for the wait and gave us a free dessert. That was really nice but for what we were spending at a nice restaurant I think a little more could have been done.
