Purlieu is a French restaurant in the Oakridge community of Calgary, Alberta. We focus on local farms and produce but sometimes it's hard to find shellfish on the prairies...so the mussels are flown in fresh from the east coast of Canada. It's summer and we think of the tropics and all of the places the French have influenced with their cuisine such as Martinique, Vietnam, French Guiana and so on. So, we've put together a three course menu to reward the early diners at Purlieu and celebrate the short, but hot, summer season of Calgary. It was the first time we had been to this restaurant - it is small and quaint - very nicely decorated, chairs are comfortable, and relaxing music playing in the background. Food was good; we had beef tartare which tasted great (chips were slightly on the oily side), the fresh oysters were good, although I think it was a bit too warm (maybe I’m used to having it served on ice?), pork belly was small and hard and a bit tough to eat, duck was great, and the mussels were good although it is surprising that it was served with fries and not bread. The drinks were fantastic!! The service was great and attentive.

Another evening at a very special neighborhood restaurant. It is small, intimate, very welcoming and with a lovely menu. Because it is small, the only problem sometimes is that it can be very 'energetically' noisy when full. However, that does not deter us!

Have been here several times. Last night we shared the mussels which were excellent. My husband had the chicken which was plentiful and prepared well. I had the cod (gluten free) which I enjoyed. Not sure about the lentils it came with but they were good. No room for dessert, next time! Thankyou Claude for wonderful service!!

Great little neighborhood spot. Small menu but varied and well executed. Wine list is small but judiciously chosen. Only real complaint is that service can be overwhelmed when they have all tables booked and full at the same time. Perhaps staggering service and bookings would help. Despite that we will return.

This is the second time we have eaten at this restaurant and again we enjoyed the food immensely. The service was very good, both servers were attentive. The restaurant is small which makes for a quiet atmosphere. You do have to reserve tables so potential diners should be aware. We would highly recommend!

This cozy Oakridge restaurant has left the best impressions! The ambiance is very welcoming and charming. Hospitable hosts, delicious dishes, beautiful presentation, wide wine list and wonderful dessert options. Staff are extremely knowledgeable and make great recommendations. Ideal for those who want a romantic night out. Highly recommended.

We’ve been going to Purlieu bistro again and again. The food is always very good. We were pleasantly surprised to see that few French classic dishes were on the menu: Escargot and Tarte Tatin . We had the salad first, beets, goat cheese and arugula, continued with lamb chops and coq au vin and ended our meal with warm tarte Tatin served with vanilla ice cream. The lamb was served with grilled broccolini, a medley of grains and a delicious caponata. The coq au vin came with spaetzles in a wine and mushrooms sauce. It was wonderful!

I always love going to Purlieu. It's walking distance from our house and the food and service are always excellent. My only negative is that I wish there were more vegetables in the dishes, or the option to order a side of vegetables.

Place is adorable, small and intimate. Food was good but not spectacular. Scallops were good but all 4 were over really over cooked. Duck was a lovely dish as well as the mussels! My husband had the cod and although it was cooked perfectly, the broth was extremely salty (soya sauce). Overall the experience was nice, servers friendly. Might try their other new restaurant to compare. 8/10 experience. Recommend to check it out and hopefully the little issues are resolved with the cooking on the plates mentioned

Great little spot tucked away in a random suburb. Community crowd. Food: Excellent value. We had lamb, shrimp, tuna, duck -- all very well cooked, nothing overdone. Balanced proportions. "Modern" might be a stretch, unless what they meant was an Asian flare -- nothing we haven't seen before, but again, everything was well done. Service: Also excellent. For a small spot - maybe 30-40max - 2 servers were barely adequate during the busier parts of the evening, especially considering one of them was mixing cocktails (well done by the way!). Drinks: Cute selection of cocktails that we're thoughtfully made by our server. Affordable bottles of wine including half bottles/caraffes. I'd say the range was a little narrow (in terms of price - basically every bottle between 40-80 from what I recall). Perhaps that's what a community french bistro calls for, but some bigger bottles might serve the odd occasion.

Our fourth time dining in and loved the experience. Music and drinks were great and food was amazing. When we talked about a certain drink they used to make, they went and checked on the ingredients to make it for us even though it wasn’t on the menu.

Excellent food at reasonable prices for high end dinning. Our waiter Claude was friendly, efficient and very entertaining. I would highly recommend for an quiet dinner with friends or even going solo.
