Even if the kitchen closes at 11pm, it doesn't mean the night is over!
Inspired by 1940's brewery, Balsam Inn offers Italian flavour cuisine in a cozy atmosphere.
Saturday : 4:30 pm to 11:00 pm
It's very expensive. an arugula salad puts you back $12. tartare is $25.
a glass of chardonnay is $14. It adds up so that 3 people with a starter and a main and 2 glasses of wine is over $200 for the table. I think there are better deals to be found in Montreal.
Awesome food, excellent music, very attentive waiter and one of the best Tiramisu I had in a lonnnngg time. Even beats some I had in the boot country. 10/10 would go again.
We arrived at 7pm, were warmly greeted, and seated at a nice table for two. The restaurant seemed a little empty. The atmosphere is that of a comfortable neighborhood Italian trattoria. Our waiter promptly took our drink order, and in a few minutes returned with two perfectly crafted drinks. While we were enjoying our drinks, a number of groups of people attempted to secure a table at the restaurant, and were turned away. That seemed strange at the time. Our waiter checked that we were happy with our drinks, and then took our dinner order. Wine arrived as we finished our drinks. A nice Chianti Reserva. By 8pm the restaurant was fully occupied. We started with boulettes (meat balls) and ravioli. Both were delicious. Main courses were osso busso and pappardelle. They were perfectly prepared. Our waiter checked on us throughout the evening. We finished the evening with a couple of after dinner drinks. One thing that stood out was how well run this restaurant is. All the staff were working together to deliver a very enjoyable dining experience.
Good Italian restaurant. Value for money. Service excellent.
Food is always great, awesome service, good drinks. Portions are a bit small though so I recommend a starter.
Great food and amazing service. The special of the day was delicious and they even catered to a special request (hold the mushrooms). The waitress, and all the staff, were friendly, helpful, and well informed.
It was very loud, so I would not return for a business meeting, but for social or after - work, it's a gem!
Service impeccable, nourriture irréprochable, décor vintage très beau. Une perle du centre-ville
Mauvaise cuisine.
Great vibe in this downtown woodsy eatery, will patronize again when in Montreal.
Excellent business lunch with a client but I looked stupid at the end when I tried to pay with my AMEX card and they would not accept it. Come on, this is 2018, there's a price for doing business.... 90% of restaurants downtown Montreal accept AMEX.
It's unfortunate but I'll take my business lunch meetings elsewhere next time.
Excellent. Loved it.
Went for lunch during work week, service was prompt and efficient , server informed us quickly of daily specials and advised us there would be a 20 minutes wait since a member of our party ordered the osso bucco , this was much appreciated. All plates were well presented and extremely tasty. Even with the wait, due to the osso bucco, we were in and out in less than an hour. Will definitely go back and recommend
Overall a great experience. Loved my Pasta dish, and the atmosphere was upbeat yet cozy. Only real downfall was the error made on all the bills at my table for those who ordered the table d'hôte-an extra charge of 2$. New bills were quickly made, and one colleague was reimbursed without any complication, however I think more could have been offered since it was the clients who noticed the mistake. Free drinks, perhaps? Moreover, leaves one to wonder how many people have been overcharged...
Overall great place to get some decent Italian food in an upper-scale casual setting. A bit on the pricier side, but the food quality is there. The menu offers classics, they feel home-cooked and cozy. Safe place for business diners, dates, or a casual dinner with a friend. It can a get a bit noisy, but managed to converse through it. I had the tagliatelle "Alfredo" and the pasta was quite good, the noodles were a bit clumped up, but they weren't overcooked. We enjoyed an orange wine and it was amazing. A dinner with two with appetizers and a bottle of wine came up to around 145$ before taxes and tips. If you want to keep the bill low, avoid the wine, although they had cheaper options than the one we selected. I would finish off by saying the service was nice and the decor is lovely. Tables are set close to each other, bistro style.
Merci! Ambiance agréable et excellent service. Très bon rapport qualité prix.
I got there a little earlier than the reservation and our table was ready and waiting, which was great. The waitress was very helpful throughout the evening, although at times I did feel that she was getting a little annoyed with me. We order a bottle of wine, but I had to send it back because I genuinely didn’t like the taste, we did order an other one slightly more expensive, but I did feel her eyes roll and I noticed that 3 waiters tried the wine that I had returned, I did find that a little odd, which is why I’m giving the restaurant a 4 star instead of 5. My friend and I had a lovely time over our meal and the food and ambiance were excellent. Great time overall.
Best value and food for a downtown restaurant. Not as interesting atmosphere as sibling resto next door but still cozy and charming. Excellent service.
SO LOUD!!!!!!!!! Impossible to have a conversation.
Fantastic food and service and all at a reasonable price. Want to try everything on the menu!
This is a beautiful cozy spot with fantastic food! The soup was especially great, so was the seafood risotto.
Place was ok. Food was good but not exceptional. Waiter was nice but didn’t speak English so non- francophones may be a little challenged. Over a good place to grab a bite
Delicious cocktails, tasty food and great service!
Excellent as usual!
Everyone ordered the salmon tartar and enjoyed it. The service was very friendly at the beginning of the evening. We were three people seated in a corner near the entrance with not much space. Nobody proposed to change when there was other tables available.
The food was great and the service was good. I found it very noisy but some people like that. I have been there a few times and I continue going. Overall it seems a little pricey for what it offers.
This was my third time here. It is casual laid back kind of place. Sit at the long bar or at a table. Both are great. Fridays are the best for the chefs pasta special. They are unique and delicious. Friday was tagliatelle with duck confit and a light cream sauce. Delicious. We then shared their massive steak and it was one of the best steaks I have had a long time.
Coming from Calgary that is a compliment. Great staff, great food, seriously the best starter salad you will ever have. We ordered a bottle of wine and did not care for it. Without any hesitation they took it back and served us something else. The price is more than fair for the great service and food. Try It you will not be disappointed.
Philip was knowledgeable and helpful in making the meal and wine choices.
Awesome meal at this outpost relatively close to the Centre Bell. The atmosphere was a bit retro, while the food was inventive and delicious. I would highly recommend.
From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I was met with a hostile attitude from a "manager" (someone who really should not be dealing with the public). I had made a reservation for my birthday at the bar. She told me that because there was a game (hockey) this was not allowed, but would allow it "this one time".
Oh, thank you.
As some friends were leaving, we got a tongue-lashing from a bartender. I can honestly say I have never been spoken to like that in my life, much less from someone who was in the service industry. I was honestly stunned.
Birthdays come once a year, and this one left a bad taste in my mouth.
The fried chicken had a delicious breading. The hunter pappardella was hearty. The orange cake was delicious and the vanilla cream fruit crisp was the best.
Excellent service, personnel accueillant, bonne table et bonne ambiance. Un incontournable!
Tout est top. En plein centre ville. Abordable. Ambiance super. Staff pro. Je viens de vous le dire: tout est Top !
Before a Habs game. They finally won!!! Very good meal. Best fried chicken ever. Sad that the bread oven is not working anymore. Prettiest bathroom ever!!!!
We found it VERY noisy, food started arriving before our drinks and portions were ok but the squid starter was too small - the green salad was amazing.
It was OK - better for lunch!
