I ordered the special sampler for 60$, 2 appetizers 1 main dish and dessert. The main dish I was served was a frozen chunk of fish, uncooked. Not cold, but frozen with icicles. I sent it back without making a fuzz. Since my partner order a cod/egg/rice mix that had no cod (and was getting cold) I sent that back also, and asked for both dishes to be served simultaneously. Of course they were not..... the cod came 20 min after my dish and was burnt. Never got the dessert that was included in the special, waited 35 min, asked three times, and gave up. Other servers were trying hard to help, but our specific server (a tall older male) was terrible and even offensive. In the end we did not pay the bill, but only after a few back and forth with the maitre and the hostess. Any respectable restaurant would cancel the bill on the first incident alone. On the positive, appetizers were good to very good. House wine really good. Ambience really good. Too bad they spoiled our night. Shameful, it was St. Valentine's.
We had a mid week reservation while travelling on business . The restaurant was empty except for our party of 3 but we were very pleased with the quality of the food and the service from this restaurant . Try the oysters from PEI, they are magnificent . We followed this with various entrees , grilled sardines, porgy that was deboned beside our table and salt cod ... all were unbelievably great .

We had a lovely meal at a fair price for the quality with friendly, professional service: in Montreal this is getting a bit hard to find. The seasonal Portugese version of a cod cake was simply delicious.
Can't say enough about our experience this evening...the food was stellar, the ambience excellent and the service was warm, friendly and outstanding. We will definitely be back!!

We were very pleased with our dining experience at Solmar. The food was delicious and generous.
The highlight of the evening was the cordiality and knowledge of the maitre d’ who was also our server.
A short get away trip to Montreal and we decided to do the tourist thing and visit old port Montreal. Solmar was recommended by Open Table and it did not disappoint. We decided to have the tapis on their menu and ordered 7 small plates for 3 people and it proof enough to get us full. Some reviews noted that service was a little slow as most of the wait staff seems to be older but that never was an issue with my visit as they more than compensate with a high level of service. We ordered the Grilled Sardines, Squids, Cod Fish, Octopus, Duck Breast, Chorizo as well as the Clams. Everything was delicious. Definately will go back and also recommend.

We had menu degustation with shrimp soup, smoked salmon, grilled octopus, pastel de Belem, plus Cornish hen. Salad and ½ carafe of house white. All excellent.
Atmosphere is very authentic. Down to our waiter and live music. I felt transported back to Lisbon!
Went for dinner with friends on Friday night. There was a musician playing traditional music. We tried most of the tapas. The service was amazing and the staff was very accommodating to dietary restrictions.
We returned the next day to experience the French cuisine on the main floor during lunch hour.
I will go back again the next time I visit Montreal
A very nice experience! A lovely atmosphere with an old-fashioned ambience, and food to match. The only issue to be found with the service was a slightly judgmental vibe we felt when being counseled on whether we should order just tapas or a mix of tapas and entrees (we have less experience with Portuguese food than with other types); otherwise, everything was first rate. Our waiter was very kind when we arrived 15 minutes earlier than planned, and seated us right away. All the food was delicious, and I'd particularly recommend the scallop and chorizo tapas and the Morue à la Braz, a sort of cylindrical pie of potato, egg, and shredded cod. If you like an old-fashioned restaurant experience (which I intend as a compliment), I'd highly recommend this place.
They claimed to never have received our reservation, even though we had a conformation from OpenTable, the staff was rude... overall not a good experience

My husband and I had a wonderful dinner at Restaurant Solmar tonight (July 4, 2019). Anthony was our waiter and he was very personable and friendly and did an excellent job. The food was fantastic, the restaurant was beautiful, and we really enjoyed a change from the heavy French cuisine. We will be back next time we visit Montreal!!
We visited on the fete Nationale, so there weren’t many diners and we felt plenty fussed over by the staff. The food was superb.
The portions are small and pricey. It was F1 weekend so I understand it was busy but they were grossly understaffed and the staff is very old school and senior - professionals. Although it was really hard to wait for our food and watch these guys have to take orders make drinks and serve food - our table side cesar took an hour. It tasted amazing but we didnt get any benefit from watching somone rush through it. I give forgiveness for F1 but you know its coming every year - be prepared in serving your guest accordingly.

Excellent find while walking through Montreal. The waiters were remarkably kind and helpful,and rhe food was exceptional. I'll definitely return here on my next visit!!

It was mediocre in most respects. In light of how many exceptional restaurants there are in Montreal, can't recommend.
Party of 4 weekday dinner. This a beautiful restaurant on st paul. They have fado playing in the background on the speakers but it’s not loud. All the food is excellent. We had as appetizers octopus, mussels and scallops. For the main meal we had lamb chops, sea food rice. The house Portuguese red wine is a perfect match for the seafood. The waiter was very friendly and clearly loves his job and is proud of his food. Definitely would go back.
Everything we ordered was bad.
We went for New Year's Eve. Music was really fun and good - Fado, by two aging male musicians. The food was good to very good with one notable exception - the lamb was VERY fatty. The price for a special occasion menu was in line with other restaurants of this caliber in the area.
Our service was not the greatest: dour, and slow. The pace was a little slower than what we communicated we wanted, to our server. (our plan was to leave around 10:30 to join the crowds outside, and listen to a band then see the fireworks.) We did not get our check until 11:45! Waited a long time and asked more than once.
Tables were very festive with noise makers, hats to wear etc. The ambience was cozy yet festive with many families celebrating.
I would recommend this as a solid option for typical Portuguese food with music; just get one of the Portuguese servers, not the older French gentleman.

Nice upscale service old school atmosphere. Food was pretty good with the exception of the duck, which was raw and rubbery —not sure if our dislike of the duck is due to how it was prepared Portuguese style or if it was just badly done. The Portuguese soup was very salty, and not enjoyable. The shrimp and sardines was excellent. Pricey meal.

El vino que escogí era de la casa muy bueno, etiqueta naranja con letras negras del sur de Portugal. Fue una excelente elección .
We had a wonderful Christmas dinner here with our two adult children. I would have given all 5 stars because everyone besides me had spectacular food. The only hold back on complete 5 stars is that I ordered the Grouper- traditional dish as I was told- and my fish was so tough that I didn’t eat it. Everything else they brought to the table- everything was over the top delicious. We will go again- but just not order grouper!

We were early for our reservation, but were seated immediately. The entire staff was excellent and Anthony, our waiter, did a great job in his recommendation for the wine Also the dishes Anthony recommended were excellent. The personal touch of a dessert for an anniversary was also very thoughtful.

Really a special evening. Came here to celebrate 40 the whinging anniversary and left with a whole experience, a private concert and song, and an outstanding meal. Thank you for making it so special for the family! We look forward to returning.

A real treat! A fully authentic Portuguese meal worth the time and money it takes to enjoy it. We were a party of 8 and really enjoyed ourselves. The wine and food was all delicious. I got the flambé steak and the other couple got the paella type dish. Kids loved the clams and mussels. The service was so attentive and warm. Definitely try it out!
