Riccardo started his career at a very young age in Milan's prestigious "GIRARROSTO" family owned. Then, in 1982 he moved to the United States and he opened the famous Sonny Bono's in Los Angeles. In 1987 he started to work with his cousin Roberto Ruggeri (owner of Bice's Venture), with him he opened Bice New York, Los Angeles and many others around the world.

Now, after three years as Executive Chef of Bice in Chicago, and together with his wife (and sous chef), Veronica, and his cousin (and hostess), Barbara, he decided to continue his gastronomic artistry and creativity in his restaurant named after himself "Riccardo Trattoria."

Here through the craftsmanship of an Italian food connoisseur, dishes are prepared with an almost zen-like essentiality that has shaped Riccardo's professional and existential life course.

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
8.4

Classy without being overly pretentious. Riccardo Trattoria is one of our favorite Italian restaurants around.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

We enjoyed our salads, entrees and dessert. Simple ingredients prepared quite nicely. If we lived closer we'd be here often!

Excellent food and service but noise level offset the overall experience.

The noise level was extremely high. Only one of our party of four could talk above it. We will not go back. The food was very good, the wine list too. What a pity that we could not talk with the other couple who was visiting from France.

A small restaurant with excellent food. We all had past dishes which were all expertly prepared. My appetizer was initially taken to another table and after pointing that out to the waiter he brought me another and removed it from the bill. We were unable to finish any of our dishes but were unable to take anything home as we were staying in a restaurant. However we did make room for dessert and the tiramisu and chocolate desserts were superb.

One if my favorite Italian restaurants, if not KY favorite, in Chicago. The food is great and you feel are in a Roman trattoria. Very authentic.

Simply terrific, as always. Only complaint was noise level ... poor acoustics often make conversation impossible. The fare is never disappointing, tho, and the service superb!

Loved the atmosphere. Every bite was delicious. We started with a nice bottle of wine, the prosciutto with melon and smoked mozzerella with vegetables/ For my entree, I had (and loved) the Truffle Parmigiana Risotto. For dessert, we shared the lemon sorbet in vodka. Wonderful service. Would definitely return.

I would recommend this restaurant as unequivocally the finest in the city, without an outlandish price tag! The cuisine is delicious ... the creative and well-crafted options incredible, the staff friendly and extremely well-trained, and the atmosphere like a tiny spot in any of Italy's finest neighborhoods. I can simply not say enough about this spot and its wonderful chef, and will come again at every opportunity.

Riccardo’s is a neighborhood restaurant for me however it is beloved throughout Chicago. Service impeccable to match perfectly cooked antipasti, pasta and main plates. Try the branzino, fettuccine a la Bolognese and and trout. Reservations are a must.

I came here for my birthday and it exceeded my expectations. The food was cooked to perfection and the service was incredible. I would recommend trying any dish that has veal in it, as this restaurant prepares veal flawlessly. Definitely coming back.

My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Riccardo Trattoria, hoping for high-quality, authentic Italian cuisine. The place did not disappoint. We shared the octopus carpaccio and the vitello tonnato, and had the pasta with salmon and vodka sauce, and the gnocchi with prosciutto. For dessert, we ordered the profiterol, and were also gifted a panna cotta, courtesy of the house for our special occasion. EVERYTHING was absolutely AMAZING. Food was flavorful, service was impeccable, and the vibe of the venue was cozy and welcoming. This restaurant quickly made it to our short list of favorite restaurants in Chicago.

We have been to Riccardo's Trattoria many times and, once again, it was excellent. The branzino was excellent, as was the pasta dishes. The waiter was very courteous and attentive to the needs of one of our party who needed to be gluten free. All in all, another wonderful evening at Riccardo's!

We booked this reservation (and you definitely need a reservation) because we’d read reviews rating Ricardo’s the best Italian in Chicagoand it did not disappoint. Small cozy venue that felt authentic. Our server was helpful and friendly. We had the crapese salad, the duck in plum sauce and the Fettucine Aragosta and was complimented a dessert of flan for my birthday. Everything was a delight and perfectly seasoned. Great experience!

Riccardo trattoria is one of the consistently best Italian restaurants in Chicago----small, quaint with GREAT service and it has a menu with so many choices--all of which are always done very well---specials ( such as the soft shell crabs either as an appetizer or entrée ) add even more variety---glad its in my neighborhood!!
