Riccardo started his career at a very young age in Milan's prestigious "GIRARROSTO" family owned. Then, in 1982 he moved to the United States and he opened the famous Sonny Bono's in Los Angeles. In 1987 he started to work with his cousin Roberto Ruggeri (owner of Bice's Venture), with him he opened Bice New York, Los Angeles and many others around the world.

Now, after three years as Executive Chef of Bice in Chicago, and together with his wife (and sous chef), Veronica, and his cousin (and hostess), Barbara, he decided to continue his gastronomic artistry and creativity in his restaurant named after himself "Riccardo Trattoria."

Here through the craftsmanship of an Italian food connoisseur, dishes are prepared with an almost zen-like essentiality that has shaped Riccardo's professional and existential life course.

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
8.4

Classy without being overly pretentious. Riccardo Trattoria is one of our favorite Italian restaurants around.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

Riccardo’s Is a favorite of mine. They have a fava bean appetizer that is scrumptious and they made it even better by putting some black truffles on top. Everything I have ever eaten there has been perfectly prepared. There is a lot to choose from and then a list of specials. Good Italian wine selections. The restaurant is small and cozy. The service is impeccable.

Riccardo's is - hands down - my absolute favorite restaurant in Chicago. It's the only Italian restaurant in which my mother mother says "Qua si mangia bene" (you'll eat well here). Make your reservations well in advance and don't be surprised if you have to wait even though you have a reservation. Just like in Italy, they don't rush anyone just to turn the table. By the same token, you can rest assured your dining experience will be at your own pace. I can't rave enough about Riccardo's...

A pleasant change from the noisier, more crowded restaurants in the city. Extensive menu, very good food, cordial, attentive service, nice wine list.

Consistently one of the best values in Chicago for Italian food, with attentive service. The atmosphere works just as well for a date as for a dinner with friends. Menu features well-executed Italian classics such as truffle risotto, fried zucchini blossoms, pasta carbonara and bolognese, panna cotta, tiramisu

I am a huge fan of chioppino, Their version was fantastic. Fabulous broth and perfectly cooked fish and shellfish. Also, I had a caesar salad which is made with a tuna dressing instead of anchovy. All very tasty. My husband enjoyed the panna cotta and I thought he profiteroles were terrific. Service was very pleasant and attentive.

This was the best Italian restaurant I have ever been too. The place was beautiful, everyone was friendly, and the food couldn’t be any better. The lasagna was incredibly delicious and the tirmissui was the best tirmissui I’ve ever tasted.

Very disappointing. Based on Open Table reviews, I expected a great meal. Food was average, service was indifferent, portions were small. I asked our waiter for entree suggestions = the menu is huge. His response: “everything is good”. That was helpful. While everything may be good, nothing we had was worth writing about or returning for. I ordered the scallops and shrimp. I was given two small scallops and two tiny shrimp. Really?
This is definitely NOT the best Italian restaurant in the city. I have visited a dozen which outshine Riccardo’s. Don’t waste your time or money here.

Just a great neighborhood trattoria on a charming street in the Old Town/Lincoln Park area (near DePaul University). Cozy little place with authentic Italian and great staff. A special night because of food, service and atmosphere for us as weekend guests in Chicago. Highly recommended from a friend who lives in Chicago and splits time between there and Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Put this on your list whether you live in the Windy City or just visiting.

Dinner for 6 food was great all different entree. Celebrating 60th Birthday with Sisters. Very fun night. Had reservations table was all set up and waiting. Paid bill left a cash tip. But noticed an over charge on credit card bill a few days later. We called and spoke with Paco he was very helpful went over bill with us and Agreed credit was given back on card. Thanks Paco we have dined here several times and would have been disappointed if this became an issue and was handled very professionally. Enjoy

Years into its run, Riccardo Trattoria stands out as one of the absolute best authentic, regional Italian restaurants in Chicago and perhaps the whole country. Chef Michi and his team continue to put out consistently great stuff in a neighborhood spot that’s frankly under appreciated. Highly recommend anyone checking it out.

I had spaghetti special, and my friend had the pesto pasta. Neither of us has anything negative to say about the food, but we can't rave about it. It's your basic Italian fare. This was my second visit, and I would return; but I just can't say there is anything noteworthy about the food, the service or the ambiance. The best I can say is that all of those points are consistently pretty good.

Riccardo Trattoria is like stepping into a Milanese ristorante! I have lived in Italy and my spouse is from Umbria. RT is one of our go-to Italian restaurant when we want to feel like we are back in Italy. We had yet another incredible dinner Labor Day evening with a friend! I had the pasta special, paccheri with lamb sausage and fava beans in a saffron sauce! It was out of this world, I would eat it again and again! My spouse had the trofie with pesto, green beans and potato, another winner! Our freind had the linguine alle vongole, usually my choice, and it is ALWAYS a winner! We all had Aperol Spritz cocktails and it was like being on the Amalfi Coast. The pasta dishes are cooked al dente to perfection, are beautiful to the eye and the portion is an ample entree portion. RT NEVER disappoints!
