Roka Akor’s principle Robata Japanese cuisine is prepared on a twelve-foot robata grill that uses mesquite charcoal and almond wood with flames that can raise temperatures up to 1,900 degrees. The restaurant’s name is derived from two words: RO and KA. The meaning of the first word is hearth, a gathering place where people socialize and take in the ambience; the latter stands for a burning fire and projecting energy. In alignment with the restaurant’s name, Roka Akor’s design features a centrally located robata grill that provides the heart of the visual experience, surrounded by rich wood décor and sleek lighting. We visited once before and had an excellent experience, but this time we were extremely disappointed. With tip, for a party of three, we spent more than $600 for poor service and just okay food. There is nothing unique or memorable about this place other than the crazy amount of money you'll spend for a service similar to Dennys. We waited 10 minutes before our server came to the table and another 5 for a wine menu. We ordered their decadent tasting menu that consisted of 5 courses that are the chef's choice, so descriptions are not posted. The timing was off. Runners brought us the majority of our food quickly and couldn't tell us much about what we were being served. They just dropped off the plate and left. Our server was also at a loss 99% of the time and couldn't tell us much about the food. Our server made few stops at our table, so we often had empty plates on the table and empty wine glasses. He seemed overwhelmed, so our special celebration of a birthday and graduation wasn't that special. We ordered the same tasting menu during our first visit and were blown away by our server's knowledge of the food and the high-quality service we received. Hence our return. If you have money to burn and don't care about hit-or-miss service, this is the place for you. We regret spending our money and time here and don't plan to return.

Consistently good. Some favorites: Japanese mushroom rice hot pot with truffle, corn with soy butter, cod with yuzu miso, bone marrow, maitake mushroom with soy butter, sweet potato with ginger teriyaki. The omakase tasting menu is totally worth it.

Not the best experience- we had a reservation, still had to wait 15 minutes for our table. Our waiter was wonderful but service was very slow . Waited almost 20 minutes to get drinks. I ordered a steak and was not asked how I wanted it cooked. We were celebrating a birthday and listed this on our reservation- it was not mentioned. Not happy with the service we received and doubt we’ll be returning

Very disappointing lunch. Everything was overly salted - salad dressing, soup, potstickers. My ribs were blackened, burnt and salty. Heard new manager and new chefs. Usually food is very good, but this time was not up to par. Our server, Audrey,, was very nice. She saved lunch from being a complete ruin with her fine service.

I’ve been to the Chicago location before and this experience was a lot different. In the beginning the server asked if we had any allergies. Allergies were discussed and was still served a dish that contained something that my friend is allergic too. The waiter was nowhere to be found, although it was a very slow afternoon service. We were one of three tables being served. Once we received the bill we informed the waiter that we would split things straight down the middle. The waiter swiped my friend’s card for the full amount and then swipes my card for the partial amount. He placed the receipts on the table and never disclosed what he did and walked away. When we looked at my friend’s receipt we noticed that it had the partial amount on it but her bank charge still had the full amount posted. We called the manager over and the manager had to find the waiter once again and had him explain what happened. The waiter would’ve never disclosed what he did if we never said again. Very dishonest and didn’t seem like he cared about what he did. Needless to say our experience was terrible.

The food and drinks were delicious! Everything is fresh and just cooked to perfection. It’s a little pricier but the quality and ambiance of the restaurant make the price worth it! Be sure to make a reservation cause the wait for walk ins tends to be long for dinner!

Birthday celebration! I was there with my daughter, husband and father. We are from about an hour away. My husband had read the reviews months ago and wanted to try it out so we had an early dinner on a Saturday evening. I would go back again if I was in that area however I would not make a special trip. The wait staff was excellent and the purple dessert was AMAZING.

We dined here for Easter during dinner service and the staff was attentive and helpful in suggesting food items to order. The food came out at a good pace so you didn’t feel rushed to finish so quickly. The tropical orange tea cake was just sublime and I’d order it again. This restaurant is perfect for groups who want to share several dishes or if you just want sushi, they offer that as well. I like how the kitchen is visible to their customers so you can see the chef(s) cooking your food.

Our table had multiple chips in it, worn out, and wobbly. The side salad on the luncheon specials was tasteless. My companion and I both left it unfinished. Main course portions were small, but adequate. Dessert was good.
