Went for a restaurant week. Food was incredible definitely lives up to the hype.
Classic New York City dining. The food was amazing and the service was second to none.
Service was outstanding! The food was delicious. We had the borscht, beef stroganoff, and cheesecake. It was a great experience.
Not at ALL a tea room. This place has turned into a bizarre, gimmicky tourist trap without soul. Afternoon tea is… wildly, wildly disappointing. Seriously, all you’re doing is paying to be in a pretty room. If you’re looking to have a lovely afternoon tea experience in New York, go literally ANYWHERE else. Even though a collection of samovars spatter the walls, they don’t care at all about tea or its Russian tradition. They only offer five flavors generic, grocery store label Harney and Sons tea bags, which run about $0.50 each, for which they charge about $10. They serve it alongside a small amount of cherry varenye which is improperly described as cherries in honey. The pastries and scones are dry, clunky, flavorless and unattractive. We even wondered if some were frozen or pre-made. And while the sandwich fillings are quite nice and the caviar selection is exceptional, it cannot make up for the pitiful, graceless servings offered up on some of the cheapest looking serving ware I’ve ever seen. If you have celiac disease, don’t be deceived by their claim to have a gluten free afternoon tea — they will charge you $80 for three tiny sandwiches and a sloppy bowl of undressed old berries and stale slices of apple that could have been pulled from the leftovers of a bodega salad bar at the end of the night. Also, don’t buy any of the tacky trinkets — what they are selling for $600 can be bought for $20 on the side of the road in Russia. Just buy them online. It was honestly a heartbreaking disappointment. The Russian Tea Room
reeks of a landmark gone sour.
I had an amazing time. It was a lovely dining experience.
Not sure if the service and everything have gone down due to Covid but we were slightly disappointed in our visit here. The building and atmosphere are wonderful and fun. The food was mediocre and not worth the price. We found the service to be slow, and seemed like customers were constantly waving down the waiters to order food or get any service. For the price tag of our entire meal, I would probably not come back.
Better than expected! Loved it- great night!
Good was delicious, atmosphere beautiful… admittedly a very high price point for what you get but overall a good experience
A little overpriced, a little over-the-top, but always a treat -- and the food is actually quite good (particularly the traditional Russian dishes). A definite must-try at least once.
The Russian Tea Room can't be beat for picturesque decor, spacious uncrowded dining and service. My favorite is Sunday Brunch with a wonderful selection of delicacies including my favorite, a caviar omelet. Their excellent assortment of wines by the glass, including a lovely French Pouilly-Fuisse, makes it even better. Try it!
Arrived and told they didnt honor restaurant week on weekends.
The chicken kiev was horrible, no cheese or ham.
The desert of tiramisu at $20 was horrible, dry, small and not creamy at all.
The moscow mule was good at the bar.
We made on reservations during Restaurant Week and when we arrived we were told that the Restaurant Week menu wasn't honored on the weekends. We went back to the Restaurant Week listing for the Russian Tea Room and no where could we see where the Restaurant Week menu wasn't honored on weekends.
Very beautiful restaurant with a great ambience. The only thing lacking is food quality given the high price point
Such an incredible atmosphere! Food was perfect and the service was top notch. Will be back!
I was expecting a grand afternoon tea experience that I read about, but it was lacking in so many areas. For the price including tax, it's just not worth it. The sandwiches felt stale, and unimaginative. The desserts were not fresh and lacked creativity, and the tea selection was unimpressive. My family really wanted to love this place, and for the price we wanted an experience, but this was not the case. My recommendation is to find another establishment (and there's plenty in the city) that could offer your the value for your buck, and a worthy experience to talk about.
Big yikes! Came here to celebrate getting my dream job and we were ignored basically the whole time. When the sandwiches came, they were dropped on the table with no explanation. Tea came 15 minutes after we were done with the sandwiches...We didn't know who our server was, and there was an hour in between sandwiches and scones/desserts. In that hour, no one checked on us or looked at us until a busser came over--he was great. Everyone else was monotone and very robotic. 80 dollars for horrible service, hard as a rock cupcakes, and sandwiches we ate in 5 minutes since they were so small. The check was never dropped and we had to give our card to a random staff member passing by so we could leave. My partner works at quality brand restaurants and usually tips big no matter how bad the service, but this was awful.
Great atmosphere, service, and food. Highly recommend! We enjoyed the afternoon tea experience.
The Russian Tea Room is an institution and worth a visit. We tried to go for restaurant week but was told this menu was not available on the weekends (no indication on the restaurant week listing). We were promptly seated and ordered the afternoon tea - which was quite expensive and while there was sufficient food, I wouldn't say the food was particularly memorable or good value. The dining room is beautiful and it was good to enjoy the ambience. The service was efficient.
We we're upset to find that the restaurant didn't offer its NYC Restaurant Week menu on the weekends. That's not the typical practice for restaurants that choose to participate. Additionally, the weekend dates are listed as being included on the Restaurant Week website.
We stayed and had brunch anyway. The food was underwhelming and the service a bit disorganized for a place this expensive and with such a storied history. Even without the misleading practice of not offering the prix fixe menu on the weekend, we would have been disappointed.
I don't recommend eating here.
when they ran out of bread rolls, the kitchen was able to improvise which was the best part of the night by bringing out buttered toast
Great place! Tasty food and comfortable atmosphere. Good to go with friends or in a date.
Always wanted to try this old NY classic, so I went during restaurant week. One can forgive the kitsch, to me that was part of the charm. Nothing charming about the rest of the experience. The drinks were outrageously overpriced and the waiter knew nothing about the wine list and then advised me that no one in the establishment knew anything about the wine list. So, after Googling my wine selection we chose from the restaurant week selections. Perhaps that was the reason the food tasted like it came from a low budget catering hall in New Jersey. I’d certainly never go back to order from the full menu.
It was truly a fantastic experience! The service was spot on. Unique & tasteful ambience. Afternoon tea trays were delicious & the caviar service was exquisite!
Beautiful place, rich history, very cool art, and excellent food presentation. And perfect martini!
The ambience and the service is excellent. The food is quite humble and not particularly outstanding for a fine dining establishment.
Still outstanding — maybe even better — after all these years. Food, service, and atmosphere can’t be beat. The lamb dumplings!! Absolutely delicious!! Everything from salad to dessert and tea is a treat. I love coming to the Russian Tea Room!
Food was good service was good but it was a quiet place and
We went during Restaurant Week. Service was prompt, waiters attentive, food tasty. Borscht full of flavor, and the beef stroganoff was a good sized potion with tender beef and a yummy helping of noodles. The cheesecake offered as part of the meal was traditional in taste - a classic. One blip - we got a serving of the Georgian dumplings (bland, tough, and lacking in both sauce and spice). Was nice to revisit a classic!
Great experience, food was great, service was on point!
Great elegant place . Wonderful service, great martini and delicious food
Loved the lighting, the art displayed around the restaurant was great. Food was perfect, the dessert was delicious.
A lifetime dream to enjoy afternoon tea at The Russian Tea Room which exceeded expectations! Ambiance, presentation, service and quality all top tier! Looking forward to my next visit!
It’s not the Russian Tea Room I knew, now food is terrible, service bad only one person for the entire restaurant but the price increases a lot.
Waiter was absolutely terrible. Never came around, didn’t know how to open wine bottle, and was rude. Would never go back.
Very unique and luxurious experience. A great place to take a sophisticated friend or family member.
Our group of 6 was very happy with the dining experience. The staff was very attentive. The decor is priceless. Our meal was tasty and well presented. We would definitely return.
