East is East Silk n' Spice - West Broadway
Just like the Dhabbas of the the Silk Route, East is East is home to everyone. Artists, musicians, minstrels and youth eat next to business men, politicians and professionals. Come and experience the mystery and vibrancy of the east, right here in Vancouver.
This spot is good for a quick casual dinner -- the inside benches with pillows are comfortable, but the outside benches are hard with no back to lean on -- not very comfortable. Live music interferes with talking -- find we have to raise our voices to be heard. The food was very tasty, but I didn't order the best combination -- the Persian salad was cold straight out of the fridge and a little too lemony, while the mango shrimp dish was warm so the two didn't complement one another. The one problem, and I'm sure it's not the restaurant's fault, but a neighborhood issue, is a silverfish found it's way to my jacket sleeve and eventually to my hand. I'm told they are harmless, but not a pleasant thing to happen in an eatery.
A very fun evening with 2 friends.. I wish that I had the name of our waitress ~ she was so informative of the menu items, combinations that we could have, or share, types of spicing, ..so patient and pleasant with all of our questions.. the live music came on and we thought oh no! we'll need to shout at each other.. NOT the case.. the music..gypsy-like, like Stephan Grapelli..all enjoying it but could still have conversations..a bonus! The food was delicious! We each had 2 half curries with the Afghan rice, accompanied with beer or stout and almond masala chai ~ a must!
A thoroughly lovely evening
Delicious food, the live band was great!
I’ve been going here for years for lunch and dinner, always come back for that chai!
Always a wonderful experience at East is East. I haven't been for a long time and really love the new larger location. My only complaint is that the (cool looking) chairs and tables are SO uncomfortable but the food makes up for it. I also don't love that they want you to pay a fee to be there because of the musical performances if you are there after 7. Personally, I do not like the music and find it loud and overwhelming so it is an insult to injury when I am also asked to pay more for that. I wish the music would start later (after 8) to give a reasonable time for dinners who don't want to listen and also think it is a bit unfair to ask for the fee after we've had reservations online and already arrived. Our dinner was at 5:45 pm and they wanted the fee if we happen to be there past 7 even though our whole dining experience was before the performance. They should rethink how they do this. But back to the food - it is wonderful and worth every penny.
We had a wonderful night celebrating our daughter's birthday! I have already recommended you to several people and will defintley be back as this is my new favorite restaurant!!
Excellent, the ambience, the food, the service was on point. Definitely recommend.
First time there and LOVED it! I did the sample feast and tried almost everything on the menu. Loved the live music and food & service were amazing!
Food was delicious, very flavourful chicken, friendly staff and live music was amazing!
Fun vibe with enjoyable live music and friendly service. The lamb was a bit tough but the other items we shared were tasty and flavourful. Overall a fun place to have a dinner out and feel you are somewhere outside of Vancouver.
Loved the spinach paneer and boulani - had to have seconds! The Mystic soup was delicious. The live music was great (it's an extra $2 per person), service was on point and overall ambience was lively and cozy. Good for a group or a date.
Get new chairs
go there. it's great. go there it's great. go there. it's great
Great life harp music, delicious food, moon chai (warm), comfy seating, had an enchanting evening!
The chai was amazing and we had thalis for lunch. I love how many vegan options they have. Everything was delicious.
The food is delicious, so flavourful. We ordered the Feast and did not regret it. The chai was also very good!
want to check a restaurant that not only offers Indian but a fusion of Persian and Afghani food? this is the place. We tried the Chai Feast tasting menu and it didn't disappoint. A little pricey in my point of view, but it gives you unlimited choices and small dishes to try over and over. A great option to the boring pub food. Wine is ok, tea is great! they have live music for which they will charge you $2 per person after 7 pm. I will definitely come back for this.
I had a birthday party there. Everyone enjoyed the food, the ambiance and the live music. They allowed me to bring my own birthday cake for a $20 cutting fee, which seemed a bit steep but at least they let me! I will go back again.
Really nice setting and food was excellent. The service was wonderful and we definitely will visit again.
Love the warmness of restaurant and the food is always great!
One of the nicest dining experiences I have had in quite a while. The set menu served tapas style has a ton of options and 'free refills' for food. The prices are reasonable. The aroma and interior ambiance are great. And they have live 'asian-ish' music after 7 pm. I went with my teenage daughter and husband - we all loved it. We will definitely go back.
Object to tipping choices.....not sure if there is a dollar amount or not....first that comes up is 20 %.
Which calculates tip on taxes as well.
The music and show was lovely but it was much too loud for a dining experience
The food is very tasty and flavours were great in the soup, both eggplant dishes, mango squash curry and the boulani roti.
The wine by the glass is definitely overpriced, almost as much for a 5 oz glass as a bottle at the liquor store.
The feast is great value, since you can ask for more dishes after the original servings, if you have room. It was quiet before the flamenco started up, but after that quite hard to talk. Service was very attentive at the beginning when less crowded, but got a little less so later in the evening, but still quite good.
We enjoyed a wonderful dining experience at Silk n' Spice. With many amazing dining choices in the Greater Vancouver area Silk n' Spice is unique. Unique Mediterranean menu, unique natural wood interior and incredible service. Margo our server was cheerful, sincere and quick to smile. She made our dining experience wonderful. She carefully explained each of our selections and checked back at perfect intervals to see if there was anything we needed. Her warm, sweet and friendly attitude added the perfect touch to a wonderful meal. We felt completely relaxed and comfortable. Thank you Margo! We strongly recommend Silk n' Spice for any occasion , for groups or a romantic date night!!
Went to East is East on Tuesday with my boyfriend and our friends to celebrate my birthday.
I'm glad I chose this place as it's my favorite restaurant in Vancouver so far.
Fast service, very nice waitresses and the food is AMAZING, we loved this unlimited small plates menu which is great so we can taste many different things.
Live music was excellent and this decoration just love it!
I even had a cake :)
I highly recommend this place (we went to the Kitsilano one) and will definitely be back!
Great food, ambience and service! We had a waiter who was in training and she was wonderful as well as her trainer. Very attentive & polite. Enjoyed the vibe on a Saturday night. We have been for lunch and supper on several occasions and was much quieter but good too.
This was our first visit to East is East, it was recommended to me by a friend. I’m so glad we decided to try it, as it was fantastic and my new favourite restaurant in Vancouver. The food was amazing and I highly recommend the chocolate pudding! Can’t wait to go back!
Unique and excellent restaurant. This is a personal issue but I don’t like live music in a restaurant. Always makes conversation impossible and for me adds nothing but aggravation to an otherwise unique experience. I will strive to arrive before the “entertainment” starts. Everything else was wonderful.
Fantastic experience. New to Middle Eastern food but the variety in courses allowed me to taste new things and learn about the different dishes. Cozy space. Great Music. Warm and rich foods, great for a cold night. Fabulous customer service. We look forward to come back soon!
The food was awesome, so was the service !! We were seated close to the musicians so was a bit loud plus it was extremely warm. Food is overpriced.
Great food and always enjoy the live music.
First visit and we loved it! Terrific ambience with live music and wonderful cuisine.
We had a wonderful time celebrating my husband's 70th birthday. Our server was excellent, the food was very good, and we very much enjoyed the live music. We love the ambience and will definitely be back.
Music was very good.
Nice arrangement of violin.
Food is alway good.
We had an outstanding experience! The food, service, and live music were all top notch
The appetizer plate though beautifully presented, had a very strong spice in one of the dips that gave me indigestion. My vegetarian roti with salad and soup was delicious, however; the server brought it out before we had finished our appetizers. In hindsight, I should of asked the server to take it back to the kitchen until we were ready. As a result my meal wasn’t hot.☹️
great birthday party for my wife and kids. excellent staff and outstanding food and music. it would be perfect if it had something very simple for 5 yr old kids, as (unfortunately) they are used to french fries and catchup.
Delicious as always.
As always the food was beautiful, the live entertainment was awesome and our server, Lindsay, was fantastic
Super flavours not crazy hot just very interesting and flavourful.
