Skippa is a seasonal Japanese restaurant inspired by Fukuoka Prefecture on Japan’s Kyushu island. We use fish carefully chosen based on seasonality + authentic binchotan charcoal.
Skippa offers two menus available at all seats within the restaurant:
Trust Skippa - seasonal tasting menu. Ranges from $100 - $150, depending on the availability of fish and produce.
A la carte menu - Bar style menu offering shareable plates and all of our sushi.
Please notify Skippa directly with allergies or dietary restrictions as our menu relies heavily on marination. Vegan, gluten free and vegetarian menus are available with 24 hours notice. The team is also very happy to work within your own personal budget for a tasting menu.
I had the tasting menu, the presentation was very nice and delicate but having one piece per course was a bit small and not enough so it was very disappointing. The meal started with a broth it was tasteless this set the tone for the rest of the menu. The other dishes that follow where bland.
Overall a very disappointing meal.
Skippa is a rare find. Having been there multiple times, the experience never waivers from anything but perfection. The menu changes often to reflect the freshest in-season ingredients all expertly prepared by a small crew with a young talented and approachable chef, Ian Robinson at the helm. Service is casual, friendly and always spot on while the restaurant itself is warm, comfortable and inviting. I highly recommend sitting at the bar and striking up a conversation with the skilled chef. The excitement in his eyes along with the description of the dish he sets in front of you is alone worth a visit. The fact that every bite of every meal has been exceptional…well that’s Skippa!
First time writing a review due to the amazing experience we've had at dinner. Everything on the tasting menu was delightful and made with love. The headchef Ian has a passion for the culinary arts and his desire to strive for excellence can be seen through the attention he pays to every aspect of how Skippa is run. Even though I had high expectations going into the dinner due to good reviews from friends, the entire experience was made special by being seated in what I personally find to be the best seat in the house (at the chef's table, right in front of Ian's work station) and conversing with Ian about the dishes (gave us a better understanding and appreciation of the food). Highly recommend this spot for a special night out, or when you're just craving a few bites of quality sushi made by a chef that knows his regulars by name and asks about their day. Reservation recommended.
We arrived 5 minutes early, our table wasn't ready until 45 minutes later.
Food was great, we had the tasting menu, and asked if they could do some sake pairings, they said they could. We asked for a price and they didn't give us a firm price, and said they would charge as we drink.
The sake pairing ending up being as expensive as the tasting menu.
Very disappointed in the service and experience, but the food was good.
Skippa is a gem, and one of Toronto's top Japanese restaurants. The chef's passion for authentic Japanese cuisine is evident in every thoughtfully-composed dish that comes from him and his talented team. The menu includes not just superlative sushi, but cooked dishes as well, each according to the season. Incredibly fresh fish and other ingredients from Japan and North America, great sake selection, and friendly and attentive servers make for a very special evening. The booth seating is perfect for a quieter dinner for 2 to 4 people, but ask for sushi bar seating to get the full experience.
for sushi，I wont recommend here，kind of izakaya，but dont pay $120 for omakase here
Our meal at Skippa was truly exceptional. We sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed our experience so much.
Excellent quality at very steep prices with very frugal portions. Be prepared to spend at least $150/person In order to be satisfied.
When it was reviewed in October 2017 the Omaske menu was reported to be $40. On our visit it had climbed to $120.
We had heard the creativity and approach to Japanese at SKIPPA was extraordinary. Did not disappoint!
This was my second visit to Skippa. The noise level was higher this time than I remember from my first visit.
Service was great although a little distracted at some points. Will definitely return!
Absolutely fantastic. Top to bottom
Amazing food and service! The list of Sake is impressive. Can't wait to go back.
Unbelievable food, service & atmosphere. We let them surprise us with a tasting menu & it was outstanding.
Wayyyy overpriced for what it is. 300 for 2 ppl and I wasn't impressed by it. Basically paid for the plane ticket for the fish from Japan.
Food is anaz
Service was excellent. All the dishes from the chefs tasting menu were great. Only regret was being too full to eat more!
Tasting menu is good. Only thing is you have to be quite hungry. It comes with lots of food...
Can't fault the quality of the food. Definitely excellent. But the service wasn't top notch. We kept having to ask for refills on tea. We ordered a lot of food which comes out whenever its ready. By the time we had been there half an hour we had ONE oyster and that's it. By the time we had been there 45 minutes we had shared a small bowl of soup as well. (I guess that's why we kept drinking our tea). By the time we left, we had spent over $100 per person not including drinks (two each) and gratuity and we were still hungry. Total bill before tip was $256. Maybe it's more of a lunch place. Or maybe not a good idea to come hungry. Then we would have been better able to appreciate the creative presentation and unique ingredients.
My wife and I were looking for a new dining adventure and a vibrant atmosphere for our date night - and Skippa did not disappoint. A warm and inviting staff welcomed us and took good care of us throughout.
We sat at the bar, as we like to do and highly recommend. And since adventure was on our minds, we let Skippa choose our meal. The best way for me to describe the food is that it was so good, I even enjoyed the selections with mushrooms - and I very rarely eat mushrooms. I should add that the server did ask about our likes and dislikes, but I chose not to mention mushrooms and glad I didn’t (see, dining adventure).
The atmosphere is vibrant and as warm as the staff. The sake selection is quite good. The sake we chose was some of the finest we’ve had.
Lastly, we spent a good portion of the night debating how best to make use of their large round table. It’d be great for an evening (or celebration) with small group of friends. Which we plan to do.
The food was fresh, delicious and creative.
We loved every dish.
Amazing food and great night out - Skippa is now on our favorites list. Staff were engaging and professional and made us feel like guests in their home. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant!
There was an initial problem with our reservation - we had specifically requested a seat at the bar and were given a seat at a table far from the sushi action. That was quite a mistake, however the management proved helpful, found a compromise and offered us (great) sake.
The service was kind and friendly but they forgot 2 orders - one was later given, the other simply forgotten (we did not ask for it again, since we were pretty full by then). For the quality of the food and the price you expect a bit better.
Still, the food is spectacular. The chef is histrionic, and his creations are incredible. Not a single dish that I could fault, some will be just a memory impossible to forget (especially the wagyu and the sea bream with olive oil and lemon compote.
All together is an an incredible place, not cheat but still good value for money for the outstanding quality of the food.
I will be happy to go back.
Tasting menu is unique and surprising. Staff is knowledgeable and attentive. The evening's bill renders this place a very special occasion spot.
Service was absolutely amazing. Recommending to everyone!
Not much to say. It was fantastic. Just go
Just incredible. Freshest fish. Every detail was spot on. Service was lovely, attentive but not intrusive. The fish!!!
I booked this table on a whim last minute. All my friends have been and raved about it. I was blown away by the service and food. I was seated in prime spot so I could see all the action on the pass. Chef Ian served me personally and thanked me for dining. Amazing experience for sure, I’ll definitely be back
Very good, the best sushi I’ve had in a very very long time.
Go! Just go. Food, service, ambiance - it was all amazing. Such a creative and refreshing take on omakase.
The service was impeccable, the waitress returned every few minutes to refill our water and tea. Once the dishes were finished, they were whisked away within seconds and replaced with the next course shortly after. We ordered Skippa's Choice and we did not regret it, I appreciate them taking into account our hunger level out of five so that we didn't leave hungry/too full by the end of the meal. We were there for around an hour and a half, it was very nice to sit there and have a nice chat with one another while we waited. Loved the overall ambience and decor choices. Would definitely recommend people try at least once.
Inventive. Masterful. Delicious. Conscientiously sourced. A top chef and top and top team working creatively within a tradition they know cold.
Service was attentive & excellent.
Food was delicious with delicate flavour.
Price was reasonable for such high quality food.
Excellent opportunity to select the Trust Skippa chef creation off the menu. Sitting at the chef bar we had the privilege of watching and speaking with the Chef. What a great personal touch. The food was excellent, fresh and created in front of us. We were able to ask questions about the ingredients to understand the wonderful flavours. We were also offered instructions on eating and dipping the sushi. The service was beyond excellent. Thanks for a wonderful memory-we will be back!
Difficult to get a reservation and need to book at least a month or two in advance.
Very traditional high quality japanese omakase, in a casual setting with excellent service. Food quality and taste were outstanding, and a good sake list from Japan. Sushi Kaji was my favourite omakase Japanese in the city, however, the dishes and service has gone down a notch from my last visit. I will be going to Skippa to satisfy my Omakase needs!
Food was delicious but portion wise not filling
Sat at the sushi bar. Had the omakase "Trust Skippa". Very mediocre, nothing special. Got served the exact same food on the menu - what's the point of omakase anyway then? I could have just ordered a la carte off the menu. Way too much cooked food served. We had a total of about 6 pieces of sushi, not a huge variety of fish. Had to ask for 2 extra pieces as they were not even part of the omakase and I was certainly not full. Not sure if it lives up to the hype but I am not going back for sushi. There are better places to go for sushi.
Also a bit annoying that the nigiri sushi had to be served on a new plate every time. That means a server had to come after each round of sushi to collect the plate. Very disruptive, especially when the sushi bar is quite crammed. A lot of high end sushi places are simply placing the sushi on a plate in front of the customer and wiping it down every now and then. It will be much less bothersome and disruptive.
Food were very fresh and very tasty! Loved every single dishes on the tasting menu.
Would have preferred more variety with the sushi. Flavours were a bit more intense with the appetizers.
