Skippa is seasonal Japanese restaurant inspired by the Fukuoka Prefecture on Japan’s southerly island - Kyushu. Seafood is mainly sourced from the Kyushu island and organic produce from local farms, when possible.
The first side of our menu is vegetable focused appetizers. The second side is our sushi menu. We offer a ‘Trust Skippa’ option that includes: sashimi, nigiri, a handroll, and tamago – all at market price and also available a la carte. We suggest to order from both sides of the menu to complete your meal.
Please notify Skippa directly with allergies or dietary restrictions as our menu relies heavily on marinating. Vegan, gluten free, and vegetarian menus are available with 24 hours notice.
My wife and I were looking for a new dining adventure and a vibrant atmosphere for our date night - and Skippa did not disappoint. A warm and inviting staff welcomed us and took good care of us throughout.
We sat at the bar, as we like to do and highly recommend. And since adventure was on our minds, we let Skippa choose our meal. The best way for me to describe the food is that it was so good, I even enjoyed the selections with mushrooms - and I very rarely eat mushrooms. I should add that the server did ask about our likes and dislikes, but I chose not to mention mushrooms and glad I didn’t (see, dining adventure).
The atmosphere is vibrant and as warm as the staff. The sake selection is quite good. The sake we chose was some of the finest we’ve had.
Lastly, we spent a good portion of the night debating how best to make use of their large round table. It’d be great for an evening (or celebration) with small group of friends. Which we plan to do.
The food was fresh, delicious and creative.
We loved every dish.
Amazing food and great night out - Skippa is now on our favorites list. Staff were engaging and professional and made us feel like guests in their home. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant!
There was an initial problem with our reservation - we had specifically requested a seat at the bar and were given a seat at a table far from the sushi action. That was quite a mistake, however the management proved helpful, found a compromise and offered us (great) sake.
The service was kind and friendly but they forgot 2 orders - one was later given, the other simply forgotten (we did not ask for it again, since we were pretty full by then). For the quality of the food and the price you expect a bit better.
Still, the food is spectacular. The chef is histrionic, and his creations are incredible. Not a single dish that I could fault, some will be just a memory impossible to forget (especially the wagyu and the sea bream with olive oil and lemon compote.
All together is an an incredible place, not cheat but still good value for money for the outstanding quality of the food.
I will be happy to go back.
Not much to say. It was fantastic. Just go
Just incredible. Freshest fish. Every detail was spot on. Service was lovely, attentive but not intrusive. The fish!!!
I booked this table on a whim last minute. All my friends have been and raved about it. I was blown away by the service and food. I was seated in prime spot so I could see all the action on the pass. Chef Ian served me personally and thanked me for dining. Amazing experience for sure, I’ll definitely be back
Very good, the best sushi I’ve had in a very very long time.
Go! Just go. Food, service, ambiance - it was all amazing. Such a creative and refreshing take on omakase.
The service was impeccable, the waitress returned every few minutes to refill our water and tea. Once the dishes were finished, they were whisked away within seconds and replaced with the next course shortly after. We ordered Skippa's Choice and we did not regret it, I appreciate them taking into account our hunger level out of five so that we didn't leave hungry/too full by the end of the meal. We were there for around an hour and a half, it was very nice to sit there and have a nice chat with one another while we waited. Loved the overall ambience and decor choices. Would definitely recommend people try at least once.
Inventive. Masterful. Delicious. Conscientiously sourced. A top chef and top and top team working creatively within a tradition they know cold.
Service was attentive & excellent.
Food was delicious with delicate flavour.
Price was reasonable for such high quality food.
Excellent opportunity to select the Trust Skippa chef creation off the menu. Sitting at the chef bar we had the privilege of watching and speaking with the Chef. What a great personal touch. The food was excellent, fresh and created in front of us. We were able to ask questions about the ingredients to understand the wonderful flavours. We were also offered instructions on eating and dipping the sushi. The service was beyond excellent. Thanks for a wonderful memory-we will be back!
Difficult to get a reservation and need to book at least a month or two in advance.
Very traditional high quality japanese omakase, in a casual setting with excellent service. Food quality and taste were outstanding, and a good sake list from Japan. Sushi Kaji was my favourite omakase Japanese in the city, however, the dishes and service has gone down a notch from my last visit. I will be going to Skippa to satisfy my Omakase needs!
Food was delicious but portion wise not filling
Sat at the sushi bar. Had the omakase "Trust Skippa". Very mediocre, nothing special. Got served the exact same food on the menu - what's the point of omakase anyway then? I could have just ordered a la carte off the menu. Way too much cooked food served. We had a total of about 6 pieces of sushi, not a huge variety of fish. Had to ask for 2 extra pieces as they were not even part of the omakase and I was certainly not full. Not sure if it lives up to the hype but I am not going back for sushi. There are better places to go for sushi.
Also a bit annoying that the nigiri sushi had to be served on a new plate every time. That means a server had to come after each round of sushi to collect the plate. Very disruptive, especially when the sushi bar is quite crammed. A lot of high end sushi places are simply placing the sushi on a plate in front of the customer and wiping it down every now and then. It will be much less bothersome and disruptive.
Food were very fresh and very tasty! Loved every single dishes on the tasting menu.
Would have preferred more variety with the sushi. Flavours were a bit more intense with the appetizers.
Amazing, amazing, amazing!!!
Amazing culinary experience, delicate and seasonal flavors.
Great service and clean kitchen, the seats at the bar are the way to go, watching chef and his team preparing the dishes was really untirtining.
Everything was wonderful.
Amazing!! Definitely will be back again. Refreshing, relaxed atmosphere with delicious flavours and creative combos of tastes. Everything was awesome. Thank you to the Skippa team for an excellent night!
Best of all time!! Awesome vegan salads and avocado rolls (best sushi rice ever!)
Menu can change daily so it’s will always be a surprise.
The chef is great at explaining where the ingredients come from and is really creative with the menu.
Ian and the Skippa team are incredible! Not only is the dining experience amazing, but the food is outstanding, delicious and creative. A must go place in Toronto!
Very authentic and delicious traditional Japanese food in a cool setting. Extremely efficient and attentive service. The main downside was that it was quite noisy (could hardly hear the servers tell me about the food). Also it was almost $250 for two people all in which I consider quite pricey considering we just ordered “trust Skippa” plus uni, one dessert and a couple of glasses of sake. The sushi was excellent as was the shishito. However the mushroom salad was just okay (similar flavors as the shishito), and the uni was tiny considering it cost $19 per piece!!
I recommend Skippa but only for a special occasion. 😊
Incredible sushi. Beautifully seasoned dishes
I had been to Skippa once before and I loved it. The food was amazing and authentic. The ambience is peaceful with a minimalist design a lot of natural wood grain keeping in line with traditional Japanese decor. The staff is welcoming and remain attentive throughout the meal. Each piece of sushi comes with instructions on whether or not to dip it in your soy sauce.
Recently, I returned to Skippa with fond memories and high expectations. This time I sat at the chef's counter. I was blown away. Not only was the food even tastier and more complex than I remembered, but we got to watch Chef Ian and his team prepare each item on the menu with such care and precision. It's a pleasure to watch Ian clean the fish and prepare the sushi with a clear passion for what he's doing. I made two more reservation while I was sitting there enjoying my meal!
If you haven't been I highly recommend a visit, and try and sit at the chef's counter late on a Sunday night when the rush is over. You'll be impressed.
Creative cuisine, very fresh fish, extremely tasty dishes
One of the best restaurants these foodies have ever had in Toronto. The attention to detail, the first rate ingredients and preparation, the incredible service and a truly spectacular tasting menu. I can say pretty securely that the chef is a genius.
Skippa has the by far the best bang for your buck omakase in Toronto. For $40 the trust me sushi menu always impresses - with most of the fish flown in from Japan it is more unique and better quality than almost anywhere.
Had a lovely dinner in comfortable surroundings. The staff clearly love their food and giving customers a great dining experience.
This very unique Japanese tapas-style eatery is a hidden gem lodged just away from, but in between 2 restaurant district,s (i.e. Harbord further East, and Ossington further south) that will gently push your taste buds to places they haven't been before. Perfectly paced out punches to the palate. Although, we would have liked to linger in the ambience and just soak in the aaah of the meal, because of the demand we were restricted to a two-hour sitting. I could imagine just having a craving and wanting to drop by Skippa for a few pieces of their succulent sushi, (using very fresh and organic ingredients ) but, because of the very high demand reservations have to be made often weeks in advance.
Amazing food and atmosphere without being ostentatious. I can definitely see this being a neighbourhood gem. Great value for sushi with unique varieties of seafood, mostly flown in fresh from Japan. Sat at the chef's table and had a great time interacting with the chef. Vegetarian dishes are lovely, fresh and all locally sourced in Ontario. Incredible desserts, too: Still dreaming of the green tea and pistachio ice cream as well as the strawberries in mascarpone. Can't wait to go back!
Excellent food. Better pacing than previous reviews. Fun staff
Cool neighbourhood and expected atmosphere. Service was nowhere close to fine dining but cost of food warranted that expectation. Food was slow to arrive and had long gaps between courses. Our meal was over $400 between 3 people and would have expected more.
Great place... Nice fusion :) whioe still very Japanese ;)
If you go and you should please reserve at the sushi bar and interact with both the chef and the crew. If you have an interest in food beyond merely putting it in your mouth and tasting, you will be treated to both an education and sublime entertainment. Oh yes, the food is marvelous
