Food was inspired and amazing! Attentive service. Loved this place and will be back soon!!
I am sure you were expecting this terrible review! We made ourselves quite vocal with our horrendous experience! Granted we were not the beast customers! However we had money! And I would like to assume the biggest bill of the evening. I will be open and honest I did not tip on a $115 bill (my portion only) The reason I did not tip was due to poor service. We were never asked how our meals were. I am sure you were aware of our displeasure since we vocalized it over and over! It still would have been nice to have been asked. We left before our last course of the worst and most expensive tasting menu I have experienced. We had to go for pizza after spending over $300 on your establishment. I would not have been as disappointed if the cost was lower. My name is Stu N and please reach out to me if you would like. sirnicealot@ hot mail
Sincerely a customer that ordered 2 main courses, 1 tasting menu and was still hungry!
An excellent new Edmonton eatery. Food is thoughtfully prepared and excellently cooked, everything we tried was excellent but the Tartare and the grilled flatbreads will keep us coming back. The Tartare has a lovely smokiness enhanced by the hearth-dried tomatoes, I can't imagine coming and not ordering this dish. The flatbreads with ndjua and other condiments is similarily exceptional. Even coming here for a beer and snack would be an excellent treat. Try it, you won't be dissapointed.
This was our first visit and it was outstanding. The food was creative and delicious and the staff was exceptional. We've already recommended to friends.
Food was amazing
First week open post pandemic
Service was good considering
Had to request music be turned down it was very loud
With the restaurants re-opening on the same day as our 21st anniversary we decided to try Smokey Bear a small open cook fire restaurant that had been on my “must try” list since they first opened.
We had the chef’s tasting menu & everything was phenomenal. It was interesting because likely I would not of chosen any of the items on my own, but they were all so good.
Highlights- course 1 flat bread with a spreadable salami. I had no idea spreadable salami was an option. This may change my life because I will be getting more somehow.
Course 3- candied salmon which was amazing and kind of reminded us of dried fish which we have only gotten in NWT. But it was served with a simple onion cream sauce that blew me away. Amazing!
Course 4- a mix of tomatoes, fresh made cheese curds and herbs. So fresh and flavourful (this was one of my husbands favourite items)
Course 5- king oyster with a gravy-like sauce. This was the best mushroom I have ever are. My husband said that is a rather bold statement considering how many fresh mushrooms I have ate. But I stand by the statement. Best mushroom ever!
Course 6- pork belly with charred cabbage and a whole slew of condiments- amazing! Flavours were on point, pork was juicy and flavourful. My favourite part of the meal.
I thought I was too full for desert but the mango custard was so light fluffy and fresh tasting impossible to turn down.
Wow- that was a lot of highlights! Guess it would simply be easer to say the whole meal was a highlight. I can not wait to go back!
We had a great experience sitting at the bar. All the Chefs we very engaging and the food was outstanding! We will be back!
Thanks so much for the positive review, we look forward to seeing you again when we reopen for dine-in.
The food was creative and interesting, but our choices tended to be overly acidic/vinegary so we could have used some more savoury flavours to balance that.
I thought the wine list was way too expensive: starting red wine bottles at $65 - $67! Should have some more options - other fine dining establishments in town offer at least some wines in the $45 - 50 range
Hi Sherry, Thanks for the honest feedback, we will take it into advisement. We hope you will return when we reopen for dine in.
We enjoyed the chef selection which consisted of many shared dishes. All were excellent. The servers were knowledgeable regarding their food. You could eat at a table or around the chefs creating your food. Great atmosphere however the cost was a bit high. Overall would highly recommend.
Hi Darrel, Thanks for the wonderful review, we are thrilled that you enjoyed yourselves. We hope. you will join its again when we reopen for dine-in.
Best meal I’ve had in Edmonton in years. Surpassed expectations.
Thank you for the amazing feedback. We are very encouraged by your words and hope you will return in the future when we reopen.
The service was strange and polite, but not friendly or helpful. While I was asked six times (not an exaggeration) if I wanted something other than water to drink, at no point were any of us asked if we enjoyed any part of our meal, even at the point of payment.
Our server sped through listing off what was in each of our dishes at such lightning speed that you'd think they were very busy, however the restaurant was half empty. She was pleasant, but after the rapid fire delivery of what was on each dish she just as quickly ran off so we didn't get a chance to ask for a repeat performance. The menu's bare bones approach of listing the main ingredients didn't help us much either.
We ordered dessert first, informed our server that we'd be ordering the rest shortly, and the other server on the floor very abruptly and without any explanation, completely silently in fact, stripped away our unused and untouched plates, cutlery, and napkins to replace them with new plates and spoons. However only one of the three of us got a complete setting back.
The food wasn't bad, it was meh and expensive for meh. The pork chop ($36) was very much burnt; it was dry and difficult to eat and the accompanying harissa was over cooked, lacked brightness and depth. The steak ($38) was cooked well, but had no seasoning and was served on a bed of oily mystery sauce. The eggplant ($18) was cold, which wasn't expected or explained, bitter, and just plain weird. It was hands down the worst thing we had and none of us could finish it. The pork belly ($14) was cut thin, bacon style, woven around onion slices on two skewers and lacked any real flavour. The tartare ($24) was good though the portion was small and it was served with charred thin bread that was overly oily. The dessert ($14) was a winter citrus custard/pudding with a flat piece of meringue on top and caramelized white chocolate chunks; nice enough mild flavour though the chunks were hard like rock candy and difficult to chew.
We are saddened that you had such a negative experience. We hope you will be able to give us a second chance in the future when we reopen for dine in.
The waitress was very knowledgeable with the menu and food preparation and ingredients and willing to help out but we decided on the Chefs menu which saved the problem of trying to choose. The courses started to arrive a fairly quickly and we asked to have things slowed down so we could savour and enjoy.
A very imaginative and unique menu, a little on the pricey side but well worth it. We will return and bring friends.
Hi Jim, We appreciate you taking the time to leave your wonderful feedback. We hope you can return in the future when we reopen.
Best meal and dining experience I’ve ever had in Edmonton. Staff and owners are exceptionally knowledgeable, and care deeply about what they are producing and serving. The food is unique and while the menu might look small the diverse dishes are reflective of a large complement of flavours and cooking techniques. Smokey eggplant with a sweet berry hit, fresh and spicy oysters, rich and delicate octopus, intense pork chop and the flatbread and dips to go with it all ... truly spectacular. And the cocktails and wine and beer curation is next level. This restaurant is deserving of much more hype. Go now, before everyone figures it out.
Thank you so much for the fabulous review, we appreciate the kind words and we look forward to seeing you in the future when we reopen.
Table we were at seemed a bit cramped but goes with the good atmosphere. Food was delicious and service was excellent. Will come back again.
Thanks for joining us and leaving such a positive review, We hope we will see you again when we reopen.
Fantastic food, great start to a great thing . Looking forward to the evolution of the restaurant.
Your positive feedback is really appreciated. We hope you can join us again when we reopen.
If you love food, entirely awesome. Noise increased over the evening and was uncomfortable for older ears, but everything else was pretty much perfect.
Excellent service! The Chef even came to our table to let us know about each course that was served. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about their wine and food. Loved the pancetta and loved the mushrooms!
We had the chef’s tasting menu. It was worth every penny. We left feeling blissfully full and satisfied after thoroughly enjoying every course. The eggplant dish was a surprising favourite!
Edmontons best new restaurant. Make sure to sit at the Chefs table and take a journey through Chef Riley's tadting menu. Absolutely amazing
Wonderful dining experience and dishes! Had the pleasure of being seated alongside the kitchen and enjoyed watching the kitchen team craftfully assemble our dishes. Kudos to the kitchen staff for their organization and efficiency.
Great evening out with friends. Great food and service.
Food was exceptional. Love this place!
Space was a bit more smokey than usual but I suppose that is to be expected. Maybe the ventilation was overloaded.
I would suggest some items are a tad overpriced in comparison to other menu items. For example the mushrooms should not be $18 for the portion.
Food was absolutely wonderful. My wife and I went for dinner and had the chefs set dinner menu. Eight items all for sharing, each was absolutely delicious. Service was also excellent. Only complaint is the beef dishes are quite small about 4 - 6oz’s not a lot for sharing and expensive for the portion size at $44.00 for the beef short rib and $38.00 for aged beef. Overall would recommend trying Smokey Bear at least once for a very tasty and unique dinning experience. We give it 5 out 5 for flavour of the food and service but only three out of 5 for value due to the beef portion size and price. It is a place for a special occasion once are twice a year due to its prices.
This place is amazing, food was magic, service was incredible.
I don’t write reviews and I’m not meaning to be unkind or unfair in any way. The service was absolutely awesome!! But the food for the value just wasn’t there. Wound up spending $55 for basically two glasses of wine because I couldn’t eat the food but still needed to pay for it. Disappointing.
Hi Messina, Sorry you felt that the food was not up to standard, we appreciate the feedback and hope you can join us again to give us a second chance.
This was our first time here and was very impressed. Food was the best I have ever eaten in Edmonton. Server was informative and helpful. We had the chefs selection and loved it all. The perfect amount of food. Wine list is also very good. A must dine!
First time trying Smokey Bear. Really enjoyed the flavors of the dishes we tried Very flavourful.
Pricing is little on the heftier side. The portions are a tad small for the listed prices.
A cute, compact restaraunt. Worth a visit.
probably would recommend to a friend although I feel the prices where hi for the quantity of food served.
The liquor prices where to high compared to other restaurants.
Food was very good, although I thought the open fire cooking could have came through more in the dishes.
My favorites were the flatbread, endive, and the mushrooms w/ nutritional yeast. The short rib and pineapple were good together however the rib itself was bland and could not have stood alone.
Ultimately the food was good but substantially overpriced.
Attentive service, great food, excellent drinks. After reading the menu beforehand, we were not sure what we would order but ended up, with the help of our server, ordering several different items and all four of us enjoyed them all.
The food experience at Smokey Bear was excellent! The dishes were imaginative, creative, and delicious. The staff were excellent and the dishes brought to our table so smoothly that we never had to wait for the next course. I loved the taste of the dishes with all their complexities. However, two of us felt that the spaghetti squash would have been more enjoyable if it had been warm or hot. Over all, a lovely experience.
Smokey bear mixes the perfect amount of originality with local ingredients to be exactly what Edmonton needs. This was my third visit in the last month and the menu had just enough changes to be exciting and enough familiarity to not be intimidating.
We were excited about our first dinner at this restaurant. As a foodie group we are serial eaters at the best restaurants in YEG. Our experience was extremely disappointing, the dishes were mostly just average and some of it was just weird. it is also ridiculously expensive considering the portion sizes. Sometimes mediocrity can be overlooked but not if it’s also way overpriced.
We are sorry to hear you were disappointed in your experience and will take your feedback on. Thanks for the honesty.
Wonderful and interesting dishes. Creative wine list and cocktails. Great atmosphere and noise level is low. Easy to visit and have a conversation. 2 other large tables close to us but it didn’t interfere with our conversation at all. Bar seating looks great too.
Hi, We are thrilled that you enjoyed yourselves and hope you can join us again soon.
Absolutely amazing and unique dining. You want something different, social with excellent food this is the place to go.
Thanks for the wonderful review. We are glad you had a nice experience, and look forward to seeing you in the future.
Great food. The somm really knows her stuff. Highly recommend!!!!
a repeat visit to Smokey Bear. Excellent food, service and cocktails!!! Great sitting at bar watching the wood burning cooking area.
Unique flavors. Friendly and efficient service. Down to earth with comfortable atmosphere.
This was my fifth experience at Smokey Bear, where I’ve taken friends and family, and this time I was treating my staff to a holiday dinner out. With all my experiences the stand out theme is consistency.
The menu has evolved each time, increasing in flavour and fun. Consistency and evolution are important to me to show the caliber of the kitchen.
The flatbread is my favourite standby, whereas the tartare is my favourite new addition. And the wine? I completely trust the sommelier to bring out adventurous glasses of new wine.
I can’t wait to see how this menu continues to grow and Smokey be on heavy rotation this year.
Food was creative and good. Excellent service. Price seemed a bit high for the meal.
