   We splurged on the omakase and had a wonderful experience! The food was delightful. Our waitress was so knowledgeable about the menu but got a little slammed at the end of the meal (no fault of hers, perhaps overbooking). I would definitely recommend Soto for a special occasion!

   I have only great things to say about my recent experiences at Soto. I find the sushi to be among the best in Austin, with friendly service, clean atmosphere and pleasant music. They actually use fresh crabmeat in their California Roll, a very impressive touch in a world dominated by fake crab. A lunch that includes miso soup, green salad, tempura, five pieces of incredible sushi and a choice of roll is $28. Not cheap, but far from expensive when you consider the quality. Wine list is quite overpriced however.

   My wife and I went to Soto for a last minute date. We got a reservation no problem, got seated no problem, and someone came to get our drink orders quickly. Off to a good start! Our drinks came out pretty quickly, but as we waited for them we spent some time looking over the menus. The menus are two GIANT sheets of bright yellow paper and the specials of the day was on a smal sheet of white paper. For the prices we were paying, this was just a small thing that just didn’t seem to fit the vibe and the quality we were expecting and wanting with a $300 bill at the end of the night. We ordered some appetizers (Brussels sprouts and the Hotate Aquachile) both dishes were decent. Aquachile was definitely one of the better dishes of the night. We then did not see our server for a good while, which was okay because one of the guys working on the sushi line took our order. He was very kind and pointed us in a couple directions. We chose a dish he recommended (something torodito) it was also just decent. The candied jalapeños have such an intense crunchy/sticky texture that for the last two bites we took them off. They added a great flavor but the texture was too intense. We then ordered one roll, some sashimi, and a handful of nigiri pieces. All of these pieces took forever to get to us. The spacing of courses was nice but insanely long. The one piece that personally blew me away was the Sake Toro(?) with the Kewpie Mayo, so so so good. The rest of our dishes were just decent. I think we expected way better everything for the prices we were paying. Again, everyone was very kind. People pointed us a lot of directions where it felt like they were just talking about every menu item like it was the greatest thing ever made, it wasn’t unfortunately. We ended with a slice of cheesecake that took like 20 minutes to get. At that point we asked for it to go but it was getting plated so we ate it there. I don’t think we will be back, but it was worth a try!

    Soto was excellent. I just ate at the country’s best sushi establishment and some of Soto’s dishes were of the same quality and inspired execution. We are looking forward to our next visit.

    The staff and general experience at Soto is why you go out to eat. They treat you like a guest and are very accommodating to pets and tables of all sizes. The food is so amazing I often just tell a server surprise me as it’s all so delicious. Can’t recommend this place more.

    Food was very good. It was not perfect (in my book) and about 15-20% overpriced compared to other very excellent Japanese venues in town, hence the 4 star and not 5. We had the Kama-Toro , which was outstanding (5), albeit a bit gimmicky with the gold flakes. The remainder of the dishes were a solid 4. Service was very good. The atmosphere a bit lacking. A note, the bench/high-top seats opposite of the bar are ergonomically ridiculous. When you sit on the bench, the table is at chest height, when you sit on the high stools, then the table is at waist hight. Overall a very good experience!

    Very wonderful restaurant. I went for prom with my date and we both really enjoyed the food. However, be aware that it can be very loud so if you want a more quiet place, you might consider asking for an outside table!

    I had placed a reservation several weeks in advance but when I showed up the told me they were overbooked and only offered us bar seats despite there being several open tables and my reservation being for a table. Then, they took 45 minutes to bring us an order and it was wrong, which took another 30 minutes to correct. Essentially, they didn’t acknowledge my reservation and the service was horrible, despite it being very expensive.

    My friend and I went to Soto during a weekend in Austin celebrating a new job. Our evening at Soto was perfect! My friend has celiac, and the staff and chefs were WELL versed in how to ensure that we not only had a fantastic dining experience but also a safe one! I will definitely be going back.

    Service was very slow - what should have been a 45 minute meal took 2 hours. Had to ask for chopsticks and then ask again for soy sauce/ginger after the food arrived. Miso soup arrived half way through the meal. Drinks are small and pricey. Nigiri pieces are unusually small - the mark of a good sushi restaurant is a small ball of properly seasoned rice with a large piece of fish draped over it. Here the rice ball was indeed very small but the fish topping was equally tiny. There were some interesting items on the menu that were unique to this restaurant.

    The food at Soto is great. The risotto has to be my favorite things on the menu. My only critique, and this comes down to personal preference, is that most of the rolls have cucumber in them. I was however able to order them without cucumber. What really stood out was the service. We dined on a Monday evening for my fathers birthday and my party included a fussy baby. Multiple members of the staff interacted with my family and our baby in attempts to play with and help calm our baby. They also let us move outside so that we would not bother any other guests inside the restaurant and the staff continued to check on us and our baby for the duration of our meal. We did not expect for our baby to be fussy and we did not expect for the staff to treat us with the amount of care and and hospitality that was demonstrated. As new parents and with a fussy baby we have not experienced this kind of care when out in the city. We felt more than welcome at Soto and can not thank the staff enough for their kind treatment. They truly are are doing amazing work and deserve a visit.

    First off - that this is a tasting menu and most portions small and to share. I did not think the quality matched the price. Very expensive and seemed overpriced to me. Good was good but nothing knocked it put of the park. Our server was awesome and knowledgeable and had great rec’s. They were also out of every wine I wanted on the menu.

    We came here for our 10th wedding anniversary. We sat at the sushi counter and watched them put together dishes - very entertaining. My husband loves sushi and said the Wagyu land and sea roll was the best he’s ever had in his life. The manager sent us over a dessert since they knew we were celebrating.

    The food was delicious, our waitress could teach a masterclass in hospitality and service, and the selection is vast. All around one of the better sushi restaurants I’ve visited. The counter experience was only okay because I would generally expect more interaction between customers and chefs but not a big deal. All around I would recommend this place but bring your adult sized credit card — you’re going to need it!

    Came here for my wife and my first wedding anniversary. Hands down one of the best experiences I've had since moving to Austin. 1) Before even getting to the food, service was beyond exceptional: Dan, the manager, went over and beyond to make arrangements to make our first anniversary dinner extra special, beyond what I could have hoped to imagine. He was super intentional and genuine in keeping in touch from the point of making reservations, down to even checking in on us during the meal and clearing plates for us. Natasha was our server, and was very kind and professional. Checking in just enough, but not too much to the point of disturbing our dinner. She was also very knowledgeable about the menu and the specific dishes, and able to articulate specifically what she enjoyed about each recommendation. Coming from Seattle where there's more than just a few good quality sushi establishments, it had been hard to find a sushi place of the same caliber here in town. 2) The food quality was also exceptional. Coming from Seattle where there are more than plenty of good sushi establishments, it had been hard to find similar places here in Austin. The nigiri pieces were just the right size to enjoy every aspect of the dish, from taste to texture, and each fish was treated with the perfect glaze and garnish (and also the right amount) - no extra soy sauce or wasabi was needed at all! The soft shell crab, which was on the happy hour menu was also fantastic, where the yolk from the fried egg blended perfectly with the soy-based glaze that came with it. Sake and whiskey selection was diverse, and not excessively big, but just enough to have fun choosing from. Haven't been to too many other sushi places yet, but I think it's safe to say I might not need to look to much more now that I've found Soto!

    First time to Soto and we really enjoyed it. Our waiter was very personable and professional, but not a sushi lover so pretty much on our own here. Don't expect flavors to "pop" here, the presentations are more balanced flavors in a typical true Japanese style. Sushi was very good, but perhaps the best was the Wagyu on the hot rock and the sea bass. Skip the King crab thing, at $50/pop for 2 oz, not worth it. Go to Costco if you are jonesing for KC. Also, although it is extravagant (and extravagantly priced) the slice of Musk Melon could be the juiciest thing I have ever tasted. Wild.
