South Block is a North-Carolina inspired BBQ hall and brewery on the edge of Mission, in Calgary. Upstairs you’ll find a large dining room, 20-seat bar, and a year-round indoor/outdoor beer garden. Downstairs hosts our stage, live music hall, and brewerey – where we brew our entire draft lineup from classic staples like our Pilsner, Lager, and IPAs, to our unique seasonal Peach Bourbon Ale and Mango Wheat Ale.

Behind the bar, we run a hand-crafted cocktail program and offer a whiskey list of over 200 varietals, including American, Canadian, Irish, Scottish, and Japanese whiskeys.

However, the biggest draw has to be our slow-smoked barbecue menu. Inspired by the flavours of North Carolina, our team arrives early every morning to smoke our famous brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and more for up to 14 hours.

    This was our 2nd trip to South Block, and it was even better than the first time...probably because it was a slower Sunday night compared with a very busy Saturday night the first time. The only complaint was that we were all quite chilly. The day had been warm but a cool breeze had arrived, so we asked to be seated indoors (we had reservations). Our table was indoors, but the entire wall on the main floor was open, which really rendered it to be an outdoor table...but with no heater, and no benefit of any lingering warmth from the sun, and in the back corner we actually caught that chilly breeze. This also meant that the food (that was served VERY quickly and arrived piping hot) also cooled off faster than we could eat it. Still tasted great, though. Will definitely go back!

    Brisket was moist and flavorful, chicken wings were divine, blueberry burnt ends (order double as they are amazing). Enjoyed the sides. Dry rub ribs and cornbread I found dry. Overall excellent!!

    Outstanding bbq meat. Very much enjoyed the salad options as a lighter and very tasty accompaniment to a meat forward dinner. Fun atmosphere with a great sheltered patio.

    Happy with the food, drinks, and service. There were 3 of us and we ordered the brisket, half chicken, brisket Philly sandwich, spicy fries, broccoli salad, and smoked corn and bean salad. We expected leftovers and definitely got them! The half chicken was juicy and the corn and bean salad was my favorite side. Service was slightly slower because it was a busy Saturday night, but still friendly and they brought out the food quickly. It was my dad’s birthday and they brought out the salted caramel cheesecake with a candle, which was delicious and appreciated! I’ll be back :)

    Everything was satisfactory with the exception of the limiting information on the food menu. I understand the minimal design and suggest using chillis or fire as a signal for how spicy a meal may be. A friend in our party had to have her sandwich remade bc she couldn't enjoy it due to the spice level. The waitress was understanding and helpful with this but it could have been avoided with a little more menu detail. Another had to pick toppings off of his sandwich to enjoy it bc there was no information on the menu. Yes guests could of course ask but ppl are shy or the restaurant is busy or any number of reasons. Restaurant environment 8/10, food and service 7.5/10, menu design 1/10

    Good restaurant but it could be better. Good food, comes out quickly. Service was below average. Servers did not check on tables regularly and seem more interested in visiting with each other than serving customers. Seems like this could be easily improved with training and management oversight

    Company event for Stampede, organization was easy, check in was a bit tense, but got it sorted quickly. Service was outstanding, food was amazing! Such a great experience. We will be back for sure!

    My only comment would be if you're going here with someone with mobility issues, make sure you mention it in your reservation. They initially attempted to seat us in the basement, which my mom couldn't handle the stairs and also there's no elevator. When I mentioned this, they quickly accommodated us upstairs, but seated us at bench seating, which was difficult for her to get in and out of. There are main floor tables with individual chairs, but not many, so just make sure you request one when you book. Otherwise - EXCELLENT - Food was good, service was friendly and helpful, atmosphere was fun and energetic. I'd been to Hayden Block (A sister restaurant) before, and it was very similar menu and food - but the atmosphere in South block is nicer - lighter, good patio, etc.

    Great location, fast service, excellent food. Reasonable price. Recommended seating for families with small children to be seated upstairs/patio instead of basement which felt like a bar instead of a family friendly restaurant.
