Crazy loud music and base for a Sunday night. I understand atmosphere, but we could NOT with the pumping base. Fine for a late weekend night, but Sunday at 7pm? Ugh.
This is a fun place to go. Drink menu is extensive but food menu is limited. Everything we had was good though.
Standby was an excellent place for us to bring clients for an upbeat and fun meal after a long day of meetings and discussions. Though we skew younger, there were a variety of age groups represented in the diners in the restaurant. Service was excellent, suggestions were on point, and small and large plates were available to share or order for one's self. I'd highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a fun, energetic time, with good music, good food, great drinks and beer, and impeccable service and atmosphere!
Creative dishes, quality ingredients. Small tables in a moderately small space. Excellent service!
Everything was PERFECT except it was a little too warm and the tables were placed very close to each other - which I understand is probably a hip thing but personally I like a little space/privacy. But definitely a GREAT place to grab a few drinks before/after party! We will definitely be back. PS our server Brent was outstanding!!! Just excellent
Hadn't been here in a while. The menu had changed completely yet there were zero disappointments.
Cannot beat the place for cocktails....great vibe...had the Middleton cup
Ate here for first time....outstanding burger and fries
Absolutely recommend when in area ....only one minor issue on cold days there is a tendency for patrons trying to elbow there way to the host...consequently leaving the door open to the elements...which can rapidly chill the room temp....(bring a wrap or something for your shoulders on cold days....) not the fault of the place whatsover...
Staff was very attentive. The drinks and food were outstanding here.
Great service. Great food. Would come back!
My boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary and this was a great spot—-The staff was great, food was excellent, definitely a spot I would recommend to anyone visiting Detroit! 5++++++stars
Excellent food and dining environment
Our experience was fabulous. Chef Stephen Schmidt visited our table. Food presentation and quality was incredible. We will be back soon!
Atmosphere was good. Very limited menu. There was 9 of us for apps and a bite before a game. Serving sizes were on the smaller size. We had to order two of each appetizer. Our bill was $480 with tip(over $50 a person) Not the place to go for casual dining.
Overall, I had a great experience. The only complaint was it was quite cold, and downright frigid whenever the door was opened, which was frequently. Enjoyed my cocktail and food, though, and would definitely go back when the weather gets warmer.
Another great evening at Standby.
I love this place! Small food menu, though well crafted. Excellent cocktails.
Standby is one of my favorite standbys! It is a terrific place to get together with friends. Wonderful location and atmosphere. The food and craft cocktails are fantastic, they have one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever tasted. The wait staff is so friendly and engaging. Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. Parking garage next door. Standby validates. This area of the city is especially fun in warm whether when you can bar hop at the skip next door and Queen's bar a short walk away.
It is a fun place.
The mussels and french fries were a bit too salty and the french fries were quite dry, like they had been sitting under a warmer for awhile.
The cod and lamb ribs were delicious.
Enjoyed our visit to Standby. The “large” plate of gnocchi for $18 was delicious, but not what we’d consider large. Enjoyed the root vegetable salad and LOVED the cheeseburger. Cocktails were unique and delicious.
Did I mention the cheeseburger was mouth-watering?!!
I went with a friend and was seated within 35 minutes. The restaurant is on the smaller size and the tables are close together. The is limited seating at the bar but the drinks we had were unique and tasty. We both got the fish and chips and agree it was flavorful and good. The fish was breaded without being saturated in grease and the fries were made in house. I'd go back again during the week versus on a weekend.
Nice experience, mussels were delicious and cocktails were well put together. Way too loud, unfortunately, which took away from the experience. They validate parking up to 2 hours in the Z structure right next door, which is very convenient. 2 cocktails and 2 small plates left us a $75 (with tip) bill, so hard to say there's any value to be had here (this is still Detroit, not Manhattan or San Francisco).
Standby allowed me another opportunity to see the renewed ownership of Detroit. Attractive big city appeal, yet intimate and cozy. The bar was perfect blending identity with tradition, while the limited menu was done professionally, uniquely, and tastefully.
Would I return? Absolutely.
We had a wonderful time at Standby for our Valentine’s Day date. Everyone was very friendly. Service was slightly slow but nothing to keep us from not coming back. We tried drinks and food from the specialty menus and everything was delicious! Ambiance was amazing and we loved the playlist they had going!
We expected more, in part because the menu online offered more selections. I was very disappointed that I couldn't try the pineapple upside down cake or pork belly, and the menu is small anyway, so this wasn't useful. The service was perfunctory, and slow, especially given that the place was mostly empty. About ten minutes into our meal, a small (four people) birthday outing got to choose the music, so we got very loud "Big Booty Ho" song for awhile. It's a beautiful space and I'm sure the drinks are good - if not worth $20 each - but it's not great for dinner and I was disappointed, in part, because it was supposed to be a romantic anniversary treat.
We had dinner before a pistons game and how different atmosphere is on a Monday at 5p versus the weekend. So quiet. The service and food didn't disappoint. Brent was so knowledgeable about the craft cocktails. I inquired about a Mezcal drink and he explained it so well that even my husband who dislikes mezcal ordered the same drink and we both loved it. Can't go wrong with the cheeseburger so good!!
Standby was great! When I made my reservation for Valentine's day they gave my wife and I complimentary glasses of champagne right as we sat down. Our server was very knowledgeable about the drinks and food options. We got our food in a timely manner and our drinks were unique and delicious. Its a great spot and is within walking distance of several other destination spots downtown.
We went here for an early dinner before a show and it was such a delightful experience! The waitstaff is pleasant and very knowledgeable about the drinks and the menu. We tried a total of 4 different craft cocktails. All very different but so tasty and unexpected. If there is one thing you MUST order on the menu, it's the baked potato soup! Hands down one of the most decadent yet flavorful soups I've ever had. I have been daydreaming about it ever since! I would suggest making a reservation because the odds of you getting seated without one are slim to none. We will be back for sure!
Excellent food and cocktails. We will e returning.
My wife and I were immediately seated and the service was amazing. Drinks were a little pricey, but worth it. Food was also good, I recommend the burger.
Great plates to share with others. Great drink menu, waiters/waitresses are happy to help select what is bestseller. Favorite bar!
Cocktails are really creative and well made. It was hard to choose because so many looked good. The staff gave good suggestions.
The food menu is quite limited but adequate to many tastes. It is a mix of standbys, like burgers, steak and fish and chips, as well as a few more creative dishes. The mussels were outstanding: cooked perfectly (not chewy or stringy) in a coconut broth with kim chi and hot pepper slices. Truffled gnocchi was delicious. Strip steak was very good.
The service was especially excellent. The place is small and crowded and our waitress was extremely busy but we never had to look for her. There were a number of very attentive support servers who really made the service outstanding.
The only complaint I have is the place is too small and felt cramped. The food, drink, and service deserve more room. On the other hand, this could also be part of the charm. It is a very charming place.
Creative and extensive cocktail list & legit amaro selection. The night we went they were blasting Justin Timberlake, so wouldn’t say it’s great for a group dinner with a big table but awesome for 4 or fewer or a sexy date. Awesome spicy wings, charcuterie plate on point and paleo me got the strip steak while everyone else’s burger looked amazing. Highly recommend!
The food we ordered was great. However, it was very loud. Our waitress said very minimal to us. We found out from another table that there were special items not on the menu. We would’ve ordered this but the waitress didn’t tell us before we ordered. We did not do small plates, each got one of the larger plate items, which were not huge but enough to be not hungry and not stuffed. We had the steak and gnocchi, both were good. I ordered a mocktail and loved what the bartender created (hibiscus, ginger and lime). I read about the bathroom being downstairs, this did not bother me at all. The restaurant was loud and tables are close together. I enjoyed it overall but probably won’t go back.
Some of the best cocktails we’ve ever had. The variety is just staggering and every one of them is amazing. And food is great to boot! Definitely looking forward to my next visit.
Super service, great food, good cocktails in a neat little place. Just wish they could figure out a way to keep the cold air from blowing in every time someone opens the door.
As always a great experience. One of those special finds in Detroit.
Great restaurant in a perfect location.
We were running late and the restaurant has no phone so we couldn’t let anyone know - as a result, we lost our table. The food was less than mediocre and the menu is small and limited. I wanted to order a burger and they don’t even serve regular yellow mustard - crazy! I had to order something else that wasn’t good and more pricey. I won’t be coming back!
One of my favorite places in the city. Opted out for drinks this time and just enjoyed a bacon cheeseburger. Always a treat!
Small intimate space. Nice ambiance. The cocktail options were unique and my husband really liked what he ordered. I couldn't drink so the bartender made a virgin cocktail for me that was great. The food was very good, but not amazing. In other words, from what we ordered, I had same or similar dishes elsewhere that I thought were better, but it was still high up there on the scale of quality. I would definitely come back again due to the good service, cocktails, food and ambiance.
