A good bar is one that suddenly transports you, one where you can really take a load off. To our team, that means a thoughtfully created craft cocktail bar where our customers feel just as comfortable ordering a shot and a beer as they do ordering a Negroni. Our vision was to create a hideaway of sorts. The entrance is through an alley into an old elevator shaft, the space is dimly lit and designed to offer a little refuge from your day to day.
We are excited to use modern and innovative techniques within our beverage program to bring new flavors and experiences to the glass. But we know that there are some things in life that should never change, so rest assured you can feel safe in the arms of all of the old classics you’ve come to love. Our equally dynamic menu will feature locally sourced fare that will complement our bar program.
Come for the drinks. Stay for the food.

Standby Ratings and Reviews
Great experience. Highly recommended.
Did not love this place. It was super cold with the door constantly opening. It was also pretty small and loud. The stairs going to the bathroom are the worst. The food itself was not awful but nothing special. Would not go there again.
Great food, creative drinks, and accommodating and friendly staff!
The quality and taste of the food was excellent. It would be nice to see their small menu selection expanded. Their atmosphere is great and the service very good.
Amazing food. Amazing service.
I can't believe I had never been to Standby until now. The food, service and vibe was off the charts. Had the best crab cakes outside of New England. Can't wait to go back again soon!
Great food and service. Only complaint is when front door opens and it is cold out the entire restaurant can feel it. Cocktails are great.
The service is outstanding! We had Avita as our server and she is amazing.
Everyone very friendly. Food and drinks were great! Unfortunately the only down fall is we’re seated near the door. The weather was very cold that night, so you could definitely feel the door opening and closing. The door man did try to keep it closed as much a possible.
Everyone had a great time! Will definitely be back!
Great place. The staff is amazing. The only complaint is the round tables are too small for three or more.
My date and I were well looked after. Our food was served promtly and was hot. The menu may be a bit small but all the better for an indecisive Girlfriend.
I love Joe Rob and everything he does in the food/drink world. applause!
Had a fabulous time. The menu was interesting - we were 'boring' and went with the steak. It was anything but boring - completely over the top wonderful. Blue-berry and basil sorbet for dessert exceeded any expectation I had for flavor. The space is intimate and warm. Can't wait to go back - it will be a go-to for when I'm showing friends around the city.
Sever Brent was great. He was very knowledgeable and explained the menu to us perfectly. Drinks and food were good, and we enjoyed ourselves.
Food pretty good.,, but drinks and atmosphere are phenomenal
Tables way to small even for small plate joint
Small space tucked into the quaint Belt alley off of Gratiot. Extensive menu of craft cocktails and small plates for food. Drinks a bit pricey but in line with other establishments in the area. Good place to bring people in from out of town, cool vibe and if you score a seat at the bar it's entertaining to watch the mixologists do their thing.
Awesome time as always at Standby! Great drinks, food, and people. Should be on the list for best cocktail bars in the world; no joke.
Server super cool and friendly. Made my bday special by bringing me a cool “off of the menu” drink with a candle!
I reserved a table for 10 people for an after-work happy hour event. Standby was very accommodating for our group and didn't have any kind of food/drink minimum or steep deposit, which was a welcome change from other bars I spoke with. The service was excellent. Brent was our server and did an excellent job of recommending drinks for our party. Great vibe.
Extremely friendly service. Excellent craft cocktails. Small but nice menu featuring comfort foods. Love the burger!
Great cocktails and great food!
Enjoyed a lovely meal prior to going to see a show at The Fox. The waitress got us out just in time to make it for curtain call. Yet we didn't feel rushed. I recommend going right at 5pm when the restaurant opens to experience the lighting of the entrance gas lamp. It created the type of atmosphere that it was going to be. I recommend everyone to go even if you're just going for drinks!
Awesome and delicious!
The atmosphere is great! The service was excellent. The food was just ok.
Great find! I love the atmosphere outside and inside of this building. The string lights and gas lantern on the outside gave it a speakeasy feel. There is no sign out front so it could be easily missed. However, the word is out and this place was packed. The service was excellent as well as the food! We had chips, wedge salad, and a cheeseburger! The cocktail menu options are endless! Such a great place. I cannot wait to go back.
We had a 6pm reservation and didn’t get seated until 7:30. Very loud and small. Good spot for drinks but not for a date.
Excellent creative craft cocktails, interesting and beautifully presented food, and lovely ambience. We have been several times and thoroughly enjoyed each visit. Will be back- wonderful addition to Detroit restaurant scene!
The cocktails are clearly the focus--the cocktail menu is about three times the physical size of the food menu. There aren't a ton of food options, so look at the menu online in advance to be sure there's something you'll like. Our food was good and our drinks were excellent.
My wife and I had dinner recently at Standby before the Jerry Seinfeld show. Great cocktail program and surprisingly good food. We had shared duck confit ravioli, venison osso bucco, and cranberry sour cream donut. All were very good. Service was excellent despite be packed on a Saturday night. I would highly recommend this place.
I’m obsessed with small plates, so his place is one of my favs.
Great service, very knowledgeable and approachable.
It was a great choice. I really enjoyed it. If I went again, I'd probably only go with one other person instead of a group of four.
Uploaded is a picture of the gnocchi I ordered. Picture has a filter. The gnocchi was good. Portion was small, but I expected that.
My only real hitch with this place is that the entrance/doorway is small and cozy. That in and of itself isn't the problem, but when I was there trying to get in and out, there were individuals right outside of the doorway smoking. I despise the smell of smoke, and thought it was completely rude of them to be standing right on both sides of the doorway doing that. They could even sense that I was annoyed by it. It would be nice if the restaurant could put some sort of a sign up encouraging folks not to do that. That's all I'd ask.
One of my favorite restaurants. But I miss the old menu with the chicken dish and perogies. Great drinks and chic ambience.
the craft cocktails here are the best in the city. Yes i've been to many of "the places" - trust me this is really really good.
Service was excellent food was very good price wasn't too bad enjoy the ambiance
Speakeasy atmosphere. small tables for small plates of food and delicious drinks.
Food tasted good but tiny portions considering it was from the "large plates" menu. Came with sides which appeared to be almost non existent to serve only as flavor additions. Incredibly overpriced and overcrowded. This place is impossible to be seated in unless you have a reservation and show up before opening. Interesting place but would suggest skipping this one and going to the Apparatus Room.
Erin, our server, was very xcellent. We had the cheese board- it was good but the cheddar was a bit old looking. We had the autumn salad, it was excellent. We also had the cops-the curry aioli is very tasty. My husband had the wagyu steak and I had the pork belly, both meals were excellent. I started with the ice cream Manhattan, it was awesome. We had great drinks and food. We will be back
