   Excellent food. 5 stars for the kitchen. The server was not knowledgeable. He didn’t know the cuts of meat, said the sweatbreads was from the bakery across the street, and burnt the coffee.

   I ordered the organic chicken but it had very little seasoning. The vegetables on the plate lacked seasoning as well. Cauliflower gratinee was under seasoned and not cooked enough. The sauce in the gratinee was watery and not thick like bechamel. No flavouring at all. Out of all the food we ordered, the truffle fries were the only thing that actually had some flavour and seasoning. However our server was awesome and super helpful with the wine selection! Disappointed about the food because it was better when I came here a long time ago.

   My last great meal out before the Pandemic, was a great spot. We did the Chef special, had a great server and spent some quality time with the owner. Will be back whenever in Ottawa

   Great restaurant. Great food and service. Very nice menu, including a set menu. LOVE BYOW on Sunday without corkage. Probably the only BYOW in the Byward Market. Make it every day of the week like Quebec!

   WoW ! Best French bistro in town. The beef tartare was amazing and the chicken was wonderfully crispy. Even the coffee was memorable. I’ll be back soon.

   Great food, service and atmosphere made Sur-Lie a great place to celebrate a birthday with friends! They had no trouble accommodating our group of 10. We really liked their recommended cocktail favourites, they went great with all the oysters we ordered! We also love their back patio in the summertime. We hope to make this a regular spot for all sorts of occasions with friends!

    Food was amazing and great portions. The only negative was how loud it was. We sat in the back room which they curtain off for the noise but it was still very hard to hear each other

    The appetizers (both soup) were excellent. The mains (steak was too fatty and was rare when it was supposed to be medium rare, gnocchi was bland,) were mediocre and dessert was forgettable.

    Delicious food. Great flavors that fit together perfectly. We prefer to eat dinner earlier (5-530PM) and we were the only diners for much of our meal there. I know this is not the restaurant's fault that others prefer to eat later, but something to keep in mind if you like to eat on the earlier side but do not want to be alone.

    With lots of competition for upscale dining in Ottawa, I feel that Sur-lie fell a bit short on a few fronts. First the highlights. The location is great and the ambiance is warm and inviting. The staff is friendly. The bartender came to our table and took some suggestions before making a very nice off the menu mocktail. The food was good, not great. We had the tuna carpaccio as a starter, which was decent although under seasoned. As a main we had the pork chop, it was served rare and we had to send it back to refire it to a medium-medium well. Taste was good but some of the elements on the plate were not cohesive. For dessert we had the chocolate dome, again good but some missed execution (expresso gel was a weird surprise). The server was good, not great. our server was extremely friendly and responsive. Perhaps my expectations are high here, and maybe I have been recently spoiled by great service, but there is more than just being nice. To be great, I follow the principle that a server must anticipate the needs of each customer yet try to be invisible otherwise. I found that the server was nowhere to be found when needed and would accidentally interrupt conversations when checking up on us. Again, server was decent but not great. Value is where I will complain a bit. While the price was comparable to the more upscale restaurants across town, I found that the overall experience wasn’t good value when factoring in the food and service.

    Great service throughout purchase of a giftcard and attending a meal. Recommendations were helpful and last but certainly not least the food was amazing. We had the beef tartare, gnocchi, duck and chocolate desert. All were exactly as described.

    Been there twice. Both times the food and service where excellent. The prices are comparable to other fine dining restaurants in the byward market but the food is definitely much better prepared and more tasty.

    Some changes to the food presentation, particularly the duck were not to the standard we had previously encountered. The Duck was still very good but not as good as before Scallop appetizer was outstanding as was the wine. Service as always was excellent. One server remembered our preferences even though we hadn’t been to the restaurant for 18 months.

    My wife and I made our first visit to Sur Lie on Thursday, December 18. They had a good selection of wines, including a good selection for Half Price Thursday. We had an excellent bin end California cabernet sauvignon with steak and frites. There was a large piece of tender strip steak accompanied by tasty frites and aioli. You can choose tenderloin instead of strip steak if you prefer. Mushrooms accompanied the dish. My wife had enough steak left over that it made sandwiches for two the next day. The five course tasting menu was described for us and sounded very interesting but was too much food for that evening. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly. Except for the half price wine, the prices are not cheap but the quantity and quality were excellent. We will be back.

    Love this place as one of Ottawa's better BYOBs and always reliable friendly service. Could use a menu change more often but what is on the menu is good but when you frequent the place becomes repetitive. One filet came under cooked and tough stringy which my friend had trouble cutting. Sent back and recooked with no change. Offered to replace dish but everyone else finished so dish was comped without asking. A nice gesture. The gnocchi main was split between two of us for an app and delicious, The fish was superb and duck very good. Always a treat.

    Outstanding experience... already recommended it to friends and family. One small input, we found the pace of the service a small bit fast, we did not felt rush simply that the food was coming fast (we took the 5 service tasting menu). the food was well-presented and very tasty... the service was friendly and professional. We really enjoyed the tasting menu... we will go back. Thank you !

    I have been to this restaurant several times over the last few years and was favourably impressed. Recently, I made a reservation for two on a Friday evening when I was in Ottawa. Arriving at the restaurant, they had some trouble finding my reservation and then told me they would find us a table. The only available table was a table for five immediately adjacent to the front entrance and at the end of the bar. Very bright halogen lights illuminated the table. My spouse requested that the lights be dimmed if possible. Some one went away to check. We sat and waited for some time. Finally someone else came by to pour some water. “The lights are not dimmable” she said. We requested an alternate location. She told us there was no other table available and the only option was to wait until someone left. Whereupon we voted with our feet and left to find another restaurant which, without a reservation, welcomed us. Sorry, but if you hold yourself out as offering “fine dining”, with entrees priced at $35-$40, then perhaps you could organize yourself more effectively, and buy some dimmable lights. Also, you might think about changing the menu occasionally. It is a bit stale after 2+ years with little change.

    The service started off being fairly attentive however after the appetizers the main dishes took over a half hour to arrive. The restaurant was less than half full so I assume they had staffing issues. I ordered the Duck Confit which was a duck leg in a creamy polenta . It was good - not stellar like some are reviewing but a nice change from chicken or beef. My dining partner had the Black Cod but unfortunately it arrived less than warm. We waited for the server to return to get it warmed back up but she never came back until about 10 mins later. No offer of pepper or to check on the dish. I would give it 3.5 stars but would likely try again.
