This was where our family chose to refuel, decompress and celebrate running the NYC marathon! The food was DELICIOUS, beautifully seasoned and plentiful. The waitstaff was so fantastic throughout our entire meal. We left feeling like we were visiting friends or had just been at a fun party. We had a great time and look forward to returning with friends.

What a disappointment. We were a party of 8. Took us 4 hours to eat. Mostly because the service was so slow. Soups arrived after appetizers even through we were told that they would come out first. Waited a long time to order and to receive.

Terrific restaurant. The food was great and authentic to my experiences in Portugal. But adding to that was a spirit of generosity in the service and just loved be served by gracious more mature servers rather than so many entitled younger wait staff who have never experienced the difference themselves. So many aspects made it a lovely lovely meal !

Very authentic and very well done Portuguese food; amazing wines (some very high ranked wines and vintages from top Portuguese regions); great and very attentive service. As someone who lived in Portugal for 17 years this is exactly the place we were missing in NYC. Will be coming here very frequently.

I've been wanting to try Taberna 97 out for awhile, and it turned out to be better than I was expecting. All their food is farm to table, and you definitely taste it in the food. Everything we ordered was so tasty and fresh. The place itself was super cute. Great ambiance. Great service. I would definitely recommend.

Having just returned from Portugal, I can honestly say this was very authentic. The food was wonderful and service extremely caring. The ambiance was lovely and the decor attractive with truly authentic looking Portuguese tile. The wine list was a bit pricey; and we would return more often if there were a few more bottles in the $35-$40 range. My one big complaint is the stools they use for seating. ;the backless seats extremely uncomfortable, and the choice makes one wonder if they want you to stay for a lengthy meal.

I went to Taberna 97 to celebrate my birthday with my girls and we all had an ABSOLUTE blast! The service was phenomenal from the minute we walked in until the moment we left. Everyone was super kind and patient with us - the servers took photos for us and were very aware of liquid levels in glasses, never leaving our sangria glasses empty. The food was beyond delicious. They offered unique bites that I had not tasted before and did a great job of describing the ingredients used to prepare each dish along with the taste profile of each one. The place is cute and cozy, but I could definitely see it getting loud and energetic on a Friday night. I recommend this place to all - a hidden gem for sure!

Appetizers were great! The Octopus was very tender and the shrimp and sausage had a great flavor to it. Their sopa de marisco starter portion was perfect and taste was delicious (it had a little heat, but bearable)! Most of the entrees can be shared, they are big enough to be shared. If you're ordering appetizers to share, some of the folks in the group can share their entrees because they can fill you up. The sides are also good enough for 2. Their Red Sangria was delightful. Just the right amount of alcohol and sweetness. Their dessert menu is very limited. Their seats are wooden square pegs. There's no back rest, so if you spend more than eating time there and linger, it can be quite uncomfortable. Service was great. It was convenient to reserve on OpenTable. We were originally a party of 10, so they required a credit card for reservation purposes but they didn't charge the card. They allowed 6 out of the 8 of us to use our credit cards to pay for the bill - they don't have a limit on the number of cards per table, which was very convenient!

The decoration of this place was fantastic, and the wait staff so friendly! The chef came out at one point, and at the end of our meal we were given two desserts on the house. Our server was friendly and seemed to take pride in his restaurant and the food.

It's sad that this restaurant served good food but had horribly slow service. For a place that accommodates maybe 50-70 people only, it had one person taking orders, one serving the orders, and no one receiving people (they made us wait 10 minutes to seat us in a table 2 feet away that had been ready when we arrived - we had reservations). Suspect the kitchen was equally understaffed. Between placing our order and getting our appetizers, we waited 40 minutes. Main course was another 20 minute wait, ordering dessert 20, and even paying our bill took so long to finish. It wasn't just us - our neighboring tables had frustrated customers. I read a review warning to check the bill before paying and true enough, I got charged an entree for $35 that we did not order. What could have been a 2 hour dinner (at most) took almost 3.5 hrs. Even if we had all the time in the world, it was painful to deal with such slow service even if the waitress/server were nice (and clearly trying to deal with a bad situation). Only thing that came fast were the drinks - probably to distract people from the wait. Unless the owner/s deal with the staffing situation, they will have people who will try the place out but don't think they will have a lot of repeat customers. There are other good restaurants in the city to bear with this kind of service. The bad reviews of the service that I have seen online are deserved.

Perfect evening! Ambience was strikingly pleasant walking in- like a little spot in Portugal itself. Ceramic tile floors, candlelit tables, outside garden out back, making it feel open air. Great service- owner circulating sincerely interested in food and experience. Food was delicious!!!!! Rooster stew and shrimp and rice started off with freshest salad I've had in quite awhile. Desert though blew me away- truly memorable desert. Biscuit cake with chocolate mousse and a Portuguese cake speciality- incredible! Incredible like didn't want it to end incredible. Can't wait to go back!!!!

We had just traveled back from Portugal and really appreciated the authenticity of this restaurant. The dishes were incredible - we shared the octopus, shrimp, and fire-water sausage. Everything is presented with such great attention to detail and care. The food was very fresh and flavourful. We really appreciated the ambiance and decor - all the little touches that brought back memories of Portuguese history and culture. The host, from Porto himself, was so warm and welcoming. We really enjoyed speaking with him and he did everything he could to make sure the dining experience exceeded our expectations. A trip here is not complete without the incredible made to order pasteis de nata!! What an absolute treat - like getting them warm from Pasteis de Belem in Lisbon!! I also throughly enjoyed the House White Wine from Alentejo - an incredible value! We cannot wait to come again and bring all of our friends. What a delightful and special experience.

I had such a great experience from the ambiance to the food to the staff! I planned this suprise excursion for my best friend's birthday and thought the aesthetics of this place would match our personalities perfectly and I wasn't dissappointed! I wanted her to try authentic Portuguese food and the whole experience was lovely! The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and the servers was so polite constantly asking if we were okay! We had to wait a little while for our food and the chef came out to personally give us a free appetizer (which was delish btw) and apologize for the wait! We were truly grateful for the experience and it added to great night I had planned for my best friend! We will be back with a larger group in the future!

This was a warm and inviting place. The hostess (owner?) and servers were so friendly it seemed like we were guests in someone's home. If you are looking for authentic Portuguese food, this is the place. We thought the sangria was a bit light, but everything else was excellent. The sausage appetizer over an open flame is a must have. The wine list was good and the Portuguese white we selected was excellent. We had a port to finish things off and they had a nice selection. It is a small (cozy) place so a reservation is probably needed.
