   Love this place but should have been clear from the website that only bar menu til 8pm. Original server was less than enthusiastic but by the time we left the server was great. Too bad we didn't start with him. Overall the drinks are great. The bar menu is fine. Just know if you want anything from the regular menu ask before you go! It's a New Haven icon so I will go back!

   Our visit to the Anchor Spa couldn't have been better. We felt welcome from the moment we walked in. We were seated at a comfortable booth with plenty of room for everyone. I'm an old Anchor patron from many years ago so I wondered if I would approve of any 'change" to the classic decor. Well, I approve and then some. It's been brought into the 21 st century but with a respectful nod to its glorious past. As for the food we had everything on the menu and enjoyed it all. Our server was a lovely young woman who was busy but always available when we needed something. I get down to New Haven to visit family now and then and the Anchor will be my "go to" spot for dinner and drinks. Thanks to all who helped us with a special thanks to Monica for her excellent service online. See you all soon. Ron

   This is our fourth time here. It used to be great but the last 2 times the kitchen has been super disorganized. Last night was the worst. After 45 minutes not a single dish had arrived, not even the appetizers. The server never came over to explain what was going on. When I finally complained the manager arrived to say he was sorry but the “food was being made with love.” The appetizers would come soon, he said. I said that wasn’t good enough, we were tired of waiting. A few minutes later the appetizers showed up and then the rest of the dishes arrived, haphazardly, over the next 30 minutes. One of our party was done eating before the last entree arrived. It was a s***-show. As compensation they comped a few entrees and offered us some free drinks, which were nice gestures. But not nice enough to get me to ever return. It’s too bad because I love the concept. I’m a big supporter of Black-owned businesses. And the bartender is terrific. So bottom line: go for a drink, but have dinner elsewhere.

   Anchor is among the standout spots in downtown New Haven. There’s always a great vibe, the drinks are AMAZING, the food is FANTASTIC and the staff consistently make it happen for their customers. I can’t say enough good things about this establishment.

    Some of the food was excellent. The salad was bland and the shrimp a bit fishy. Too dark but wait staff was very nice and attentive. Should get rid of the online menu which is the old Anchor bar.

    Birthday celebration for my boyfriend. Food was very good, ambience was romantic and intimate despite the closeness of tables. Only complaint is that we were unclear if we ordered with a server or through the QR menu. Absolutely a hole in the wall you don’t want to miss

    Went out for my birthday and was really surprised to see this hole in the wall with such exuberance. The scene is perfectly lit, dim for an intimate vibe. The music was perfect. A wide selection of old school to new school reggae ,Afro-beats and r&b. The drinks were among the best I’ve had. Really recommend “Color Purple”. Our waitress was polite and attentive and our food was great. All in all 10/10

    This was my first time at Anchor Spa. I loved the atmosphere and being able to be in a booth, away from the incredibly loud bar. Wonderful service. Great food and a perfect martini! Win win!

    What I love the most about this establishment is the customer Service. Sorry I forgot the young man name that was our host. But he was so professional. What stood out to me the most was the ambience. I will truly recommend the Anchor bar

    Food was delicious, good portion size. Staff are super friendly. The drinks are so good and delicious. Noise level was low. You can’t hear other parties but are able to hear your own table. The wait time for food and drinks was normal if not better. This was my first time and I will definitely be going back.

    Server was friendly and attentive when able to. Was a busy night so we had to go to the bar a couple of times to order more drinks. We ordered fried chicken in a bag which was amazingly cooked and just delicious. Sexy wings and plantain chips were also freshly made and delicious. However the jerk chicken with stir fry was very disappointing. The chicken was too dry and the stir fry, it was a mix between overcooked and fry versus being left out too long. However, the cocktails were just right. We will definitely come back here for the cocktails, the food I highly doubt. Once again, our server was kind and attentive when he was able to. If you want good Caribbean cocktails tho, this is the place.

    I was really excited to try this Caribbean influenced spot, but it was disappointing. I am Jamaican; therefore, this review is totally based on my Caribbean palate. If you are not use to Caribbean cuisine, then you may not experience the same disappointment. I had the jerk chicken tight which was flat and lacked proper jerk seasoning. My husband had the shrimp with yam sauce and a side of rice which was equally as tasteless as the chicken. My daughter had the grill shrimp with mac and cheese which was the better of the 3 entrees. The shrimp has a little burnt taste which was perfect. The music was so inappropriate, so my recommendation is to not take your kids here. Some Jamaican music contains graphic language and therefore should be played in a restaurant setting like this. Overall, there is a lot of room for improvement. I may consider giving here another try after a year.

    After only seeing the outside of the Anchor Bar for 30+ years (including being turned away many times as an underage student....) I finally had the opportunity to go (though now it's the Anchor "Spa" - took my wife for pre-Rep dinner and drinks. Was a great change-up from the more formal dining options we usually choose for "date night." SO glad we went. Was immediately struck by the cool vibe and friendly, low-key atmosphere. Bartender greeted us the moment we walked in, she was very friendly, pointed out good menu options for drinks and dinner, which were right on. The "Manhattan After Dark" is not to be missed, and pairs nicely with the spicy cauliflower tacos. Shrimp and grits were loaded with shrimp. Plenty of comfort food and other options available, including vegetarian. Service was fantastic. Great start to a great evening.

    Anchor Spa was excellent, but they do not participate with Open Table. In fact, they do not take reservations, at all. They apologized, when I told them we had booked through Open Table, and luckily they were able to seat us. We enjoyed our dinner and the location right near College Street Music Hall, and the Shubert.

    We went to Anchor Spa prior to seeing Yale Opera at the Schubert. Anchor was in fact a great spot for pre-theatre- the cauliflower tacos were spectacularly good, as was the homemade veggie burger. BUT BEWARE- despite their presence on open table (which they deny knowing about) they do NOT accept reservations.....even if Open Table says you have one.

    The venue itself is very nice! However, it is very loud. Not good if you want to talk. We got there and they didn't know anything about our reservation. We got sited and then it took them about 15 minutes to take our order. Drinks are made on premises and they are worth the visit.

    Probably the flyest spot in New Haven... which I didn’t realize could be a thing before this. The bar is super cute with an amazing, casual-cool vibe. It feels more like a spot in NYC than New England, which makes sense given that’s where the owner has made his name. Drinks are more unique than just about anything else you’ll find in the area and if you like rum, you’ll really love the cocktail list. The food is also great— a mix of southern comfort foods and American fusion. You can’t go wrong here.
