The Bear, The Fish, The Root & The Berry
The Syilx People of the Okanagan Nation approach to food is based on the creation stories of their culture and we’ve taken their stories as the inspiration for the name of our restaurant: “The Bear, The Fish, The Root & The Berry,” based on the story of the Four Food Chiefs.
The Four Food Chiefs are central: Skimxist Black Bear (chief of animals, representing self-sacrifice, leadership, giving), Ntytikxw Chinook Salmon (water creatures, perseverance, hard work), Speetlum Bitterroot (plants below the round, relationships to the land) and Seeya Saskatoon Berry (plants above ground, growth, strength, community) are legendary and the elements of indigenous cuisine.

Had just a fantastic lunch at this restaurant, first time there but I will be back with others. LOL Our server was very attentive & made us laugh. The food was delicious and the presentation made you not want to actually eat it, it was so pretty. If you want to have a happy dining experience, visit The Bear, the Fish, The Root & The Berry.
Amazing food and service! Too bad they didn’t have the staff for the outdoor patio. It’s so nice, even if smoky!
The service was outstanding. No special occasion just a date night but oh my goodness this was a lovely evening. The bannock spread was delicious, I especially enjoyed the house made pickles. I had the bison ribeye which was probably the greatest steak I have ever had in my entire life. My girlfriend had the halibut and was blown away by the pasta it is served with. The halibut itself was amazing but oh my goodness the pasta, it was just next level. The gravy served with my steak had this flavor to it that I could never achieve on my own and I am ridiculously jealous. Hostess seated us immediately upon arrival and we had our appetizer which was a whole meal in itself in less that 20 minutes of our arrival. The house made lemonade was the perfect thirst quencher for those hot Okanagan days. I would recommend this to anybody looking for a nice night out.
The food and service were both excellent. Sitting outside on the patio offered a beautiful view of the lake and surrounding countryside as well. Despite the heat and sun, the large umbrellas on the patio made outdoor dining comfortable.
We have been to all good restaurants in Osoyoos but this one is the best
Our waiter Shane was amazing the food was incredible
What an interesting menu! I had a difficult time choosing what to order. Every dish was delicious and beautifully presented. Definitely going back.
My partner and I shared two dishes so we could experience more tasty food at one late lunch. I enjoyed steelhead with fresh greens. The fish was perfectly cooked. My partner order a flatiron steak ( also perfectly medium rare). Food was fresh with tasty tweaks to make it a unique experience. Would suggest giving it a try if you haven’t already.
Such a great restaurant - amazing view and really great food.
Perfect night, love the concept of the menu. Will be back
The food was very good and the service prompt. The location is lovely with views over the lake. The day we were there we had to eat inside due to the smoke from local fires, and the air conditioning was on. We found it quite cold, and the noise level was high. We would have enjoyed a quieter meal.
Unique flavours and presentation, a memorable experience.
Avoid the Bison steak. Perhaps the worst bison steak I have had in my recent recollection. At $55, I expected melt in your mouth. Instead it was chewy and 1/4 was gristle. I felt like I had chewed as much as when one eats a large bowl of salad. Maybe try the ribs if you want red meat.
My wife had the clams and they were very good. My son enjoyed his squash plate.
We reserved a patio table one month ago. They scrambled to find us one. We sat in the back corner of the patio. No view and no breeze.
Great meal with fantastic service matched only by the views!
Food was spectacular, particularly the Bannock & Dips, and the Halibut 👌. Cocktails as well, were on point.
However they desperately need more ceiling fans and a misting system for their patio. It's ridiculously hot & uncomfortable, which detracts from the view and overall experience.
Our first time there! We’d seen the space prior to the renovation though. Love the new decor!! The food was fantastic and we also enjoyed the cocktails and mocktails. Can’t beat the views either!
I have always had a great experience at this restaurant. Excellent food and staff
Excellent and creative drinks and appetizers. So much food that by the time of entree, we were already pretty full.
Excellent food and service! I even got to practice my French with our waiter.
Incredible, locally sourced food. Ambience was serene, however, the patio does get very warm. Would have been more enjoyable to have misters or larger fans/awnings.
Great menu with amazing flavours and wonderful service. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful so that you have a great experience.
The food here was unique, fresh and outstanding. We also had the Nk’Mip merlot which I would highly recommend. The views from the deck are stunning and our waitress was very accommodating to us with our two children.
Everything was great for our lunch with friends. We sat outside in the patio overlooking the vineyard towards the lake. The server was awesome and answered all our questions. Just a couple areas of opportunity. Their take on an apple juice mimosa wasn’t a big hit. Guess we are just traditionalist. Secondly, I ordered the salad with salmon. I asked the sever if the salmon would be cooked knowing most restaurants serve salmon or tuna rare which I do t prefer at all and she said yes. I told her I don’t like raw fish and prefer it to be cooked through and she said no problem. When the salad came the salmon was a nice size but when I took a pics of it it was rare inside and just seared on the outside. Had to send it back which our server was very understanding. The the second piece came back it was just medium. Instead of sending it back again I gave the uncooked portions to my husband who enjoys sushi. Besides those two incidents everything else was great.
Great place for breakfast/brunch.
Very good coffee and everyone was very friendly
Just really slow service this time....20 minutes until our order was taken. Food was fabulous, table outside not great.
Had an amazing brunch here. The bannocks, the bacon, the benny was scrumptious. Coupled with their special apple mimosa and the gorgeous view over the vineyards and the lake. The service was also outstanding. Highly recommend this spot and would definitely visit again next time
It was a hot day, around 36 degrees and we were seated outside at the patio which was a little bit too hot. It will be nice to have misting machine outdoor for a very hot day.
Food and service was first class it’s a bit pricey but you get what you pay for.
Our server Michael was amazing. We had the clams and charcuterie board for a light supper. It was so delicious. We can’t wait to get back to try the ribs!
Excellent dining experience. The food was spectacular, especially the salmon platter. Service was excellent and the servers treated us very well, though they clearly were short staffed and it took time to get glasses filled and for food to be served.
The beef ribs were too fatty for my liking. They were out of a lot of wine even though it was still on the wine list.
Service was slow but they knew it and compensated for it. They were out of a lot of wine.
I was very disappointed with our experience at this restaurant. I had made a reservation a couple weeks prior to going and was shocked when we were seated at a table on the patio in direct sunlight in nearly 40 degree weather. We asked 2 different servers 3 times if we could move inside or at least another table in the shade and were told no. There was an empty table in more shade right next to us and we were told that we couldn’t move there and that it wouldn’t make a difference once the sun moved. We were drenched in sweat and felt sick by the time we left. We ate as fast as we could so that we could leave quickly. I felt embarrassed for picking this restaurant for a night out on our girls trip. It was very unpleasant and the staff were not helpful. I will not be going back.
It was a hot day, and we had reserved the previous week. We were placed outside, where it was too hot to eat, which would have been unbearable but as soon as we asked we were moved inside even though it was clearly a possible problem logistically. The staff were all extremely knowledgeable about the unique food offerings, and extremely excited to tell us all about them. This is a dining experience that is very memorable, and truly Canadian, as all the foods are based from indigenous culture and tradition, supplemented with local Okanagan valley products. The salmon, duck and bison entrees that we had were all superb; the bannock and salmon appetizer plates were delicious. The cocktails were impeccable, local wine awesome! Friendly and efficient service. If I were to have any negativity at all (and it really wasn't much of one), the tables and chairs were not what one might expect from such an amazing dining experience, although I think it is because of the COVID situation, having to keep distancing and following the fluid restriction standards.
The food presentation and creativity was not lost on us. Every dish we had was perfectly executed and flavourful . View was lovely and outdoor seating comfortable . Thank you !!
First time trying Bison steak - it was tasty and juicy cooked medium rare to perfection. Relaxed atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff. Really enjoyed our evening.
We had a table in the shade which was quite enjoyable. Maybe recommend some type of awning for people in the sun . Had the duck duck cassoulet. A beautifully cooked breast with the thigh of duck in the cassoulet. Delicious. Hubby had ribs three huge ribs with so much meat he couldn’t eat the vegetables. A very good varied wine selection with reasonable prices . Excellent food
Great interpretation of indigenous cuisine
Server was excellent. Inside there was no ambience so ,over outside despite the heat and our table was not under a fan it was lovely
Excellent food, chairs could have been more comfortable. Would add music.
