The Bear, The Fish, The Root & The Berry
The Syilx People of the Okanagan Nation approach to food is based on the creation stories of their culture and we’ve taken their stories as the inspiration for the name of our restaurant: “The Bear, The Fish, The Root & The Berry,” based on the story of the Four Food Chiefs.
The Four Food Chiefs are central: Skimxist Black Bear (chief of animals, representing self-sacrifice, leadership, giving), Ntytikxw Chinook Salmon (water creatures, perseverance, hard work), Speetlum Bitterroot (plants below the round, relationships to the land) and Seeya Saskatoon Berry (plants above ground, growth, strength, community) are legendary and the elements of indigenous cuisine.

fried rice of the wild kind / mushroom broth / dill cucumber seaweed salad
We had an appetizer lunch and it was excellent: almost too much for two of us. The service was outstanding and the ambience on the deck was quite spectacular.
Ron our server was prompt, friendly and helpful during our dinner. He was very patient as we visited, reviewed the many wonderful selections on the menu. They all look like you should try them all. We agreed a return visit it would be to try what we did not order but wanted .
One guest had the:
pan seared halibut | chestnut scratchy pasta } peas | chorizo | spinach | white onion velouté
and 2 Guests ordered:
Duck Duck Beans Berries
roasted duck breast | leek ash honey | confit duck leg | white bean cassoulet | chard & chard chutney | elk chorizo | beets | saskatoon berries
Beautiful Presentation and many palette pleasing flavours.
Dessert 1 to share:
One Little Ladybug
chocolate nest | black & white chocolate mousse | caramel cheesecake | raspberry sorbet
If you can't decide we suggest the above, you will be pleased and walk away happy.
This is by far a place we will get back to!! Food excellent - the desserts were spectacular (did not take photo)! Thanks for a great service and experience!
We loved everything about this restaurant. The beet-cured eggs Benny on bannock was to-die-for. Outstanding view on the heated patio. We will definitely be back.
This was an overall wonderful dining experience. Natalie our waitress was from the beginning friendly helpful and attentive . The menu choices were interesting and varied both in price and good offering . The presentation of the meal with the detailed explanation of how it was prepared was an added feature to the meal. No one at our table had any complaints every thing was flavourful and plentiful . The desserts were works of art it was almost wrong to eat them but they were as delicious as they were beautiful.
It was a fantastic time. We will be back for sure
The outdoor patio is a much better setting for dinner than inside. The bison ribeye was amazing. Great experience.
Best meal and service we’ve ever had! Cash was the best server and the bison rib eye was to die for.
Chose this restaurant based on reviews and felt that it was very good overall. The menu is unique to the area and we enjoyed the flavours/presentation. The server was very friendly as was the manager who stopped by to chat and make dessert recommendations. We enjoyed this restaurant enough that we stopped by for lunch again the next day and had another enjoyable experience.
Always a wonderful experience. The food is so delightful and pretty to look at. Service is excellent.
Another wonderful experience for my husband and myself and a new dining experience for my brother and his wife. From Mackenzie, the hostess who sat us, to Kash our server it was a great afternoon of conversation, drinks and food. I had the steelhead trout, hubby had the Steak & Frites, sister-in-law had the chowder and my brother had the best bison burger ever. Thank you again for making our lunch special.
Very bizarre experience here. We had a 5:30 reservation for Sunday. The restaurant only had 3 tables total in it. The host tried to seat us outside and we asked to be sat inside. She responded with “well it’s going to be busy and someone has to sit outside but I GUESS we could let you sit inside” as she rolled her eyes. She threw menus down on a table and walked away. We then sat at our table for over 15 minutes with not a single person acknowledging us. Finally a server came over and brought us water. She was very friendly and knew the menu well. I asked for some bread and was told “the chef prefers when you order everything at once” I then had to explain I was pregnant and hungry and she got the bread out to us. The rest of the experience went well, the entire time there were at least 5 empty tables in the restaurant. The server and food really made the experience but all the “rules” and the bizarre host made it so we won’t be rushing back. For what you pay I’d rather go somewhere else in town.
The food was fantastic. Fresh local ingredients. Unusual and interesting dishes and flavours. Try the bannock with all of the dips 😀
Lots of good local wines.
Wonderful experience, with superb service and great breakfast choices. Originally wanted to come to Spirit Ridge for dinner only and this breakfast just confirmed our choice. Can't wait for next year's visit!
A special 60th Anniversary dinner was enhanced by the great service here! Good food, good wine!!!
Great food. Server was only okay. Quite pricey even for a fancier restaurant. Nice patio.
They have a very unique and interesting menu. The prices were okay and except for the Carpaccio the portion sizes are excellent.
We ate here in late 2019 and was not impressed with the food. Two years later and what a change for the better. Well presented, interesting mix of ingredients made for a very nice meal.
Innovative menu, absolutely delicious food. Sit on the patio, the dining room has terrible ambience.
The setting and staff were excellent. For the most part, the food was good, I highly recommend the quail entree and the ladybug dessert.
The food was fantastic. We had to wait 45+ minutes for our first drink & we waited 55 minutes for the bread to be served. Really disappointing. The lights were too bright giving a ‘cafeteria’ feel. Decor very nice though.
As always, everyone wants to make the experience wonderful and the team works so well together, it is a pleasure to partner with you.

We made a reservation weeks in advance for my birthday dinner, but got placed at a table between the kitchen door and the door to the patio, despite explaining that my husband is hard of hearing. The food was okay, but not enough to make me want to take leftovers home. The lack of ambiance is what really spoiled the occasion. It was so incredibly loud inside that we couldn’t even have a conversation. It would have helped if we could have booked or waited for a patio table, but we weren’t given that option. The last time we dined here earlier this summer the noise was also an issue, although not as bad. (On that occasion we had been able to book a patio table, but the hostess was insistent that it was too hot out and that we really should sit indoors instead. Too hot for the staff perhaps?) Perhaps management should consider installing some acoustic baffles on the ceiling. Regardless, we won’t be back. If I’m going to be saturated with noise, I’d rather eat at a pub or sports bar.
Very nice meal, outdoors on roofed & heated patio …..good service, great food , thanks !
We came with high expectations as we had read that the chef had previously worked at Fogo Island Inn. Unfortunately, what we experienced was a pricey slab of lukewarm bison meat that may have been microwaved rather than grilled and side vegetables that were primarily poached and also not particularly hot. The duck duck beans berries was a bit warmer, but to be quite honest, was not worth its price considering its similarity to a skillet from Denny's. The manager tried to make up for it and kindly offered both wine and dessert on the house, but the food was just too disappointing. First impressions matter.
The venue itself is non descript. Large room with a few tables probably set up that way because if COVID-19. There is a patio but too cold to sit there. The food was very good and presented very nicely. The fried bread was superb, the pan fried halibut amazing and the Little Ladybug dessert very decadent and delicious. The Pinot Gris was quite limp. The manager held his own but our waiter was an infrequent visitor who needed a chat about hygiene. Not a mood enhancer, lol. It has changed quite a bit since Hyatt bought the property and the ambience is dull but the food makes up for a cold room.
We were in Osoyoos staying at Spirit Ridge, The Bear, The Fish, The Root & The Berry came highly recommended and it was the "splurge" dinner of our trip. The food and the service did not disappoint. It was a cool/damp evening and we were seated inside, there was a private event on the main outdoor patio and other outdoor seating was limited. Unfortunately the indoor area lacked ambiance. We had breakfast the day before in exactly the same space and it had an upscale cafeteria feel vs. 5 star restaurant. A bit of attention (dim the lights, a table cloth) to the indoor seating space would have made this an amazing night. Also our main course came while there were still appetizer dishes/platter on the table, we had to shuffle dishes to make room for our main course to be set down. We left feeling like something was missing and slightly disappointed.
Unique menu selections and beautiful presentation. We had the halibut, salmon and beef rib dinners and they all delicious.
We will definitely be back.
The food was good, though we felt it was a little overpriced. The service was fantastic.
The indoor section looks like a school cafeteria. For a “high end” restaurant, there is a lot of room for improvement with the look of the place.
We sat outside and there were A LOT of flies around. It definitely took away from our experience. A few fly traps, zappers, sticky tape would have been very helpful.
Also, the wine menu could use more options for “by the glass”.
Food was fantastic. Attention to detail was impressive. Better meal for the 4 of us than the last time. All staff incredibly attentive. Not inexpensive but top 5 meals for us. So well done!!
We normally would eat outside on the patio, but due to rain we ate inside the restaurant. The restaurant ambiance is terrible, it is just an open room, harsh lighting and feels like an open cafeteria. Initially the service was prompt, then during the meal no one checked to see how our meal was or to see if we would like more wine. The food was good, but there is more to dining then just the food. So for the overall experience, I would rate this restaurant as a 3 star at most. And when comparing to surrounding restaurants in area, it cannot compete with the other winery restaurants.
My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our Birthday's while in Osoyoos, they sat us at a beautiful table on the patio, in front of the fireplace. We got the Bannock to start, it was amazing, we had to stop eating because we weren't going to have room for mains! For Dinner I ordered the Ribs and him the Halibut, portions were more than enough, we could not stop saying how amazing it was, halibut was soft and buttery, the ribs with roast veggies were to die for. Will be back, 10/10!
Casual decor and vibe.
Food presentation excellent. Food very rich, I recommend arriving very very hungry, huge servings. Interesting take on a bannock taco.
Desert always excellent and beautifully prepared.
Our table was inside and the AC was very aggressively cooling the interior. It was freezing and drafty to the point we considered going and getting our fleece jackets. We complained numerous times and the staff (which was minimal thanks to COVID and a conference at the resort) seemed to try and fix it but in the end they only slightly improved the situation. It is such a shame as the food was excellent but it was so hard to enjoy it because it was so cold.
Beautiful view on the patio! We had lunch and enjoyed the Greens' N things with steak and Steak & frites. The steak was flavorful and enjoyable. The desserts were outstanding, White peach sorbet and Dessert in a Jar-o, Little Miss Muffet - both delicious. Only recommendation - seating is more for lounging so a bit uncomfy for shorter people like us. Overall wonderful! Thanks!
No drink menu. Brought the wrong drinks once ordered. No acknowledgement of special occasion left in the notes. Erin saved the day!
The service was great but our mojitos were not very good. We had the carpaccio which was super dry as it was not served with any kind of aioli. My halibut was good but my husbands bison prime rib was not great. Too smokey in taste. Presentation was nice though.
This spot has all the potential but fell a bit short of our expectations. Loved the view from the patio—it can’t be beat. The menu looked so interesting and captivated our tastebuds but our experience with the sharing platter was so underwhelming, we decided to alter our dinner plans as a result and head elsewhere.
However, I would give it another try since it could have just been the one item on the menu that didn’t quite have our tastebuds singing…
The service was terrible. So slow. I felt bad gor the one server that was working. Way too busy for 2 ppl to be working
Amazing experience! We had live music, which was very good! The view of the lake from the patio was outstanding! Highly recommend the beef ribs from the dinner menu! We will be back!!
Had a wonderful burger! The fries were great too. Always excellent service by Erin.
