Opened August 2017, The Butternut Tree is just a stone’s throw from the beautiful Alberta Legislature Grounds close to Edmonton’s majestic river valley. Chef Downey’s first restaurant pays homage to the places he’s lived, worked and explored, while showcasing seasonal ingredients from Canada’s diverse landscape.

A thoughtfully designed open kitchen allows guests to be part of the action. There are no walls, enabling discovery of Chef Downey’s style, both as a chef and a leader in the kitchen.

The Butternut Tree focuses on replacing global sources of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty with unique ingredients from our home and native land. From budding foodies to seasoned supporters of local provisions and purveyors, this is the place where guests can experience the unexpected.

Private Dining

The Butternut Tree is the perfect place to host your next group gathering. From our private dining room that seats up to 12 guests to booking out the entire space with panoramic views of the Alberta legislature and river valley.

I have nothing but amazing things to say about our night at The Butternut Tree. Our server was so knowledgeable and ensured our meals and drinks were well suited to our preferences. We learned so much about the dishes and the origins of their ingredients, it was so interesting and engaging. The food was incredible, perhaps the most exciting culinary experience we have had in Edmonton. Overall it was a phenomenal evening! Well worth the money to have such an interesting and delicious dining experience.

The nite was exceptional, you could even consider it an event. We were there for New Years Eve.
The menu was unique and quite impressive. 9 courses and it did not disappoint. Would definitely want
to attend another time to see what the menu is like normally. Thanks for the lovely nite and the bonus
fireworks.

I really wanted to love The Butternut Tree. My friend and I chose it for a 'fancy dinner date' that we do occasionally. I will say that the ambience, the views, the presentation of food, and creativity was outstanding and really was unlike anything else. I enjoyed the food a lot, and the meats were superb, but I wasn't especially blown away by anything. That said, I believe everything was cooked and served well, the amount of salt used just wasn't to my taste.

The service, however, was awful. It was slow - we didn't get drinks for 10 minutes after arriving, a glass of wine that was ordered for dinner NEVER arrived, and coffee that was ordered with dessert came after the dessert had already been eaten. It was unapologetic - when an incorrect wine was brought, they finally fixed it after I flagged the server down (they never actually come to ask how you're doing) but without any apology and they made me feel like it was a bother that I asked for the correct one. They also gave us the wrong bill at the end, and then when they did bring the correct one it wasn't split how we specifically asked it to be. At that point we wanted to be out of there so badly we didn't even bother to have them correct it; god only knows how long that would have taken. It was without a doubt the most disappointed I've ever been in a $100 meal. I've had better service experiences just about anywhere else I've been, including bars and chain restaurants.

It's too bad - my first impression was how lovely it looked and how happy I was we choose The Butternut Tree. It's true that first impressions aren't always right.

We went to the Butternut tree to celebrate a birthday. We had the tasting menu with the drink pairing. Everything was so lovely and we loved that all the ingredients were sourced in Canada. I really appreciated the special effort they put in to the dessert for my boyfriends birthday.

Enjoyed a fabulous evening here. We had the tasting special with drink pairing. Absolutely amazing food excellently paired with wonderful wines from across the country. The flavours ranged from subtle and delightful to bursting sometimes in the same dish. This place is a gem. Love that they are strictly a Canadian content show case. Will definitely be back.

I had heard some great reviews of this place so I needed to try it for myself... although I am glad that I tried it, I will likely not be back. For the price paid, I feel as though this was just okay. The venue is great, with a great ambiance, but left feeling underwhelmed. There are definitely better fine dining options in Edmonton that provide a better value.

My husband and I had the duck. My husband did not enjoy the bed of squash it was on. Our party had a variety of different things. The lamb looked amazing, a little too red for my liking and I do like rare another one of our party members order the short ribs. He said it was amazing. And another was the sablefish which she said was amazing. So overall yes it was “above average”. We are really picky about food. And we want to taste things that would be difficult to make at home, as for the duck. I can make fried potatoes at home and squash at home. But as for the duck as I mentioned before. It was great !!

Outstanding experience. Started with lovely cocktails, moved on to appetizers, wine, entrees and desserts. Flavours were complex and delicious with many elements on each plate. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. Our windows overlooked the High Level Bridge and the Legislative Grounds, magically lit with Christmas lights.

Cauliflower soup was sublime and a perfect appetizer, however the portion of foie gras was a bit smaller and different than our table's experience in other restaurants, including in France. As for mains, I felt that my duck was wonderfully cooked and I ate every last morsel, but one person in our party found hers to be a bit under cooked and I could see a noticeable difference as to how hers looked versus mine even though we asked for the same preparation. The beef seemed passable, but not amazing. Dessert was OK. There were some hits, some mehs and some misses but for the price point I expected there to be more hits.

Our experience at the Butternut Tree was absolutely phenomenal. Chef Scott Downey expertly highighted every ingredient - each dish was exquisite in both flavour and presentation. The slow braised shortrib was so tender that it literally melted in my mouth. The atmosphere was elegant but relaxed and the service was exceptional. Chef Downey even took a few minutes to come speak with us at the end of our meal, and from our conversation, he is a chef who is clearly passionate about celebrating Canadian cuisine and local, seasonal ingredients. We can't wait to come back!

Food was amazing. View was great, especially at Christmas when the Ledg is all lit up.
Our server had detailed knowledge about the food, which likely had the most complex array of ingredients I've eaten. And now I can say I've eaten crickets!
If you want unusual and meticulously prepared and presented food - this is the place.

Thank you to the team at The Butternut tree for another great get together. Exquisite experience having our dinner at Butternut Tree. The staff was knowledgeable and accommodating, going out of the way to make our dining experience enjoyable by allowing to substitute my main beef short rib to try their infamous brome lake duck. Spectacular night view of the legislature we took in while enjoying our meal. Chef Scott did a marvelous job with the tasting menu. Each course a surprise and excitement for the senses. The delicious beverage pairings, local canadian ingredients, innovative cuisine leaves us satisfied and wanting more.

Group of 4. Early seating and pre-theatre. We were all very impressed with the level of service from our server (Emily). It was clear that this level of service was important and an expectation for their brand. Elegant service and exceptional knowledge about food. Unpretentious and professional . Pride of service was apparent from the front door greeting and observation of other servers. This does not exist in many restaurants now. Beautiful presentation of food with attention to detail. All dishes were outstanding (cauliflower soup, prairie garden cabbage roll, Brome Lake duck, sablefish). Looking forward to returning.

This had to be the worst dinner. We were a party of four celebrating our mutual birthdays. We had 3 separate entrees 1. the beef - which was the only palatable entre we ordered. The fish was disgusting. 2 people at our table attempted to eat it thinking it was just too “fishy” for their liking but ended up both having gastric issues that night. Even the desserts were off. The combination of flavours while trying to be eclectic just ruined what the dessert should have tasted like. The waiter was empathetic to the fish issue and even he seemed embarrassed by the 4.00 taken off.

We enjoyed a lovely Tuesday evening dinner with a great view of the Legislature. Great room ambience (quiet music) coupled with an attentive server. The food was quite lovely to look at but lacked seasoning in some components. My wife had the autumn squash to start and found the flavours inconsistent from one area of the plate to the other. The Manila clams were cooked nicely, but could use more salt and some acidic brightness. The simplicity of the shaved fennel on the burnt toast was rather disappointing.
As for the main courses, my wife chose the sablefish and enjoyed the buttery texture. I ordered the lamb and found the flavours to be quite nice, if not slightly overwhelming. The dried tomato garnish, while pretty to look at, was assertively flavoured and texturally challenging to eat. Unfortunately the creamed kale was undercooked and chewy, extremely salty and the sauce too thin.
The low point of the meal was the dessert. We opted to share the cloudberry panna cotta. The frozen disc of raspberry ice was bracingly sour, so much so that the delicate flavour of the panna cotta was entirely lost. The sea buckthorn purée only added more acidity.
Overall a nice meal but somewhat underwhelming.

Had a fantastic birthday dinner with an old friend. Tables are far enough apart that you can comfortably converse without having to shout or listen to other tables' conversation. I had the tasting menu. Every course was absolutely delicious and the wine pairings were on point. Service was exceptional.
My only complaint was that portions were on the small side. I am not a huge eater so this could be a problem for those with robust appetites.
I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a quiet dinner out.

The staff was attentive, but something was missing...they seemed to be efficient but it was very quiet so it actually appeared to be more hurried. Probably would not have noticed if it was busy. It just seemed a bit off tempo.
at 100+ per person i'd like to be able to check off the totally satisfied boxes. the food was very good but some of the flavours this time seemed harsh and too over the top... leaving my palate overpowered.
presentation was excellent. mushroom appetizer was excellent but very small portion. My beef main was powerfully flavoured (au jus harsh and seabuckthorn berries and juice added an unwelcome citrus and bitter note) was adequate in portion size. (i'm not a big portion guy)
Wife had duck main and was pleased with the whole package. her appetizer: pears, squash aged cheese was a confusing match up of big flavour.
no wheat free dessert so i was out of luck. the wife tried the blueberry butter tart and was not impressed with it. good... but "her's is much better"
she enjoyed a cocktail, which seemed to get better as the smoked ice pressed the alcohol.
nice clean restaurant. calm atmosphere.
if you don't mind dropping 200-250 (sans wine) per couple you likely will be pretty happy with the outing. If you are out on a date, maybe ask them to slow it down a bit if they are not busy.

The butternut tree was amazing for view, ambiance, presentation, and deliciousness. I would definitely go back. The only consideration next time would be to not go on a completely empty stomach, as I was still hungry at the end. I did order two appetizers instead of an entree; which in hindsight was a bad idea compared to the entree portions; but even so the entrees weren’t a much bigger portion so I probably wouldn’t have been much better off with those anyhow. It’s just pretty pricey for the amount of food. It is a work of art though.
