The Butternut Tree
A thoughtfully designed open kitchen allows guests to be part of the action. There are no walls, enabling discovery of Chef Downey’s style, both as a chef and a leader in the kitchen.
The Butternut Tree focuses on replacing global sources of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty with unique ingredients from our home and native land. From budding foodies to seasoned supporters of local provisions and purveyors, this is the place where guests can experience the unexpected.
The Butternut Tree is the perfect place to host your next group gathering. From our private dining room that seats up to 12 guests to booking out the entire space with panoramic views of the Alberta legislature and river valley. Outstanding experience. Food was absolutely delicious, service was exceptional and the ambiance superb.
Exceptional service and amazing food. The Butternut Tree never disappoints, and remains my go-to when I'm in Edmonton.
The appetizer we ordered was shrimp balls, it tasted exactly like a pancake with maybe a scant amount of any shrimp, for $17 the value was not even close to being there, the only good thing was the dip which overpowered the breakfast/pancake taste.
Elk dish was ok but the potatoes and carrot it came with was very plain and could of used a bit more taste/sauce.
Rabbit was not great, the rabbit legs were a bit dry and breaded balls tasted old and were hard and dried out, the kale tasted a tad burnt and very salty. There was also an orange sauce that I found too sweet and did not suit the meal well.
We advised the waiter of our expectations with the appetizer not being met and nothing was done to compensate for it.
Winter scenery was great. All Canadian cuisine was a huge plus for us
Chef Scott Downey's creativity in the kitchen was well appreciated. Celeriac dumplings - who knew? Cauliflower slow roasted for more than 10 hours? Who comes up with this? The food was excellent and the flavours a joy to experience. You do pay for it, though. The only slight slip up was the appetizer arriving a little cooler than it should have. The size of the desert was a bit of a disappointment as well - it was so good, more of it would have been better.
Food, presentation and service was delightful.
Amazing! My favourite restaurant in the city.
Exquisite food and service !
Food was beautiful, interesting and delicious. Great canadian concept done with so much creativity!
Beautiful room, creative cocktails, and an all Canadian sourced menu. Food was good, but not great for the price, and the menu caters to a more adventurous palate (e.g., rabbit, beef tongue, sweetbreads), meaning there are not a lot of options for those with more conservative tastes. Glad we tried it, but for the high price point, it didn’t quite live up to expectations.
The food quality was superb and it was all beautifully presented. This restaurant is definitely worth a splurge. That said, given its pricing, it is likely to be a place for special nights rather than a regular spot for a dinner out.
We finally got a babysitter. And I received a recommendation from a chef at Chartier for The butternut tree. So we checked it out and were very impressed
The menu was exploratory. The food was fantastic and the plating was resplendent!!! Our waiter Tim was wonderful and his knowledge was incredible
Only average food for the price. We had been there before and the food was much better.
I would recommend the Butternut Tree because some of the food was awesome. The atmosphere is nice and the views are lovely. I enjoy that everything is Canadian sourced. I think that is great. The last time we were there we had a great server and this one was awkward and subpar. Our appetizers this time around were great but our mains were just alright which for the money doesn’t feel good enough. It’s not cheap. Don’t get the rabbit. Personal opinion of course.
Service was fantastic, nice young man very knowledgeable. The food was very good, we had the chance to try new flavors and delicious products from Canada! We expected a tiny bit more in our dish regarding the appetizers in their tasting menu. I wouldn't recommend to seat next to the windows cross their entrance during winter, you can feel the cold coming from the main hall/entrance (doors opening/closing). Atmosphere is great, quiet Chic place!
What a beautiful evening. Perfect food, gorgeous cocktails, amazing wine and the best service I’ve ever had anywhere. Can’t wait to come back.
Fantastic experience ! The food, concept, and service were extraordinary
Outstanding chef! Best in Alberta. A bit expensive but worth it.
Food was ok, I wouldn't say anything was amazing. Using only Canadian ingredients seems like a neat twist, but practically it severely limits the flavors and options. Rather bland food, especially for the price.
We had a great experience at the Butternut Tree. Our server was so informative and passionate about food. We went on a Thursday night for a special occasion and it was nice and quiet and we didn’t feel rushed at all. Definitely will recommend to others.
Great location and view. Service was among the best in the city. Food was creative, but we found it bland.
The butternut tree has been open for a little more than two years. It’s a ‘nice to try’ restaurant where the food is good but not superb, though the ambiance and service makes up for what the palate lacks.
We tried almost everything on the menu, and even though the presentation and ingredients are top notch, ever dish left something to be desired in terms of flavor. Some dishes were overwhelmed with different textures and flavors, all seemingly vying for attention but never coalescing into a whole. Other dishes simply lacked flavor altogether.
The service however is second to none, and the atmosphere is also excellent for a quiet upscale dinner or for a special occasion.
All in all, the value is lacking. However it’s certainly worth a try, and you can make the final decision yourself of whether or not you’d return.
The food was great. The servings were creative and the atmosphere was great
Knowledgeable and attentive staff.
Pacific Halibut was perfect. Just a little crunch on top which I like.
Lamb tatare was unique. Nasturtium leaves... who knew they were so tasty!
Dandelion cake was yummy with the Caramel sauce, but did not see or taste the much maligned yellow flower.
All the preserves looked so interesting!
We will be back!
A Canadian culinary experience. Great food, service and room. Take time and enjoy!!
Awesome experience! We did the tasting menu which is amazing. From Chef Scott to the servers and food our experience was fantastic. They made our anniversary a very memorable one. You have to try it!
The view, service and food all exceeded my expectations. Its a great restaurant!
We celebrated our anniversary here. It was our first time, and we absolutely loved the experience from start to finish. Can't say enough great things about the Halibut!
Great service. Very knowledgeable. All Adams recommendations were excellent.
we went your restaurant for our Anniversary dinner.
Everything was great. We enjoyed our dinner.
Our server Adam was great to have knowledge of all of our questions of food and drinks.
We definitely come back to your restaurant.
Fantastic! Best food I ever had!
Good food. Too pretentious in the presentation. Rock fish delicious. Berries and cheese for dessert lovely
Absolutely the best service ever . Great wine list, great food and a view of the river valley what could be better . Thanks to our wonderful server!!
Edmonton’s best kept secret!! We had an INCREDIBLE experience here and will be recommending the place to friends!
Amazing serving staff and chef ! Very knowledgeable about the food, ingredients and wine . Excellent restaurant for exploring Canadian cuisine and wines .
This could have been perfect scores for all categories however dessert is just lacking. With so many fruits in season in Canada right now, the options are always a disappointment come dessert (this was our second visit). However everything else was outstanding.
Excellent and creative dishes made with Canadian ingredients. Our server Adam was excellent - knowledgeable about the menu and provided us a lot of background on the dishes.
Our servor Adam was very informative and had an infectious energy about him. We had the tasting menu, beautiful presentation but didn't have as much depth of flavor as I was expecting, missing some umami? I really appreciate the sourcing of local and Canadian grown ingredients, the broccolini and marrow was the table favorite, with the seabuck thorn ice-cream coming in a close second. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and offers a great view of the Highlevel Bridge and streetcar. A little pricey I thought, but overall a great experience.
this is my second review this is one of the finest resaurnat in edmonton. the food is outstanding the service excptioand the setting is wonderful i only oject to their policy about canadain wines
