Delicious, great service, fun atmosphere!
The waiting staff was friendly but was more concerned with personal conversation rather than tending to their guests. My sister had a blonde hair in her food. Waiter did no apologize but did comp our bill by taking off our fee for endless mimosas and the dish with the hair in it for the inconvenience. Outside of the hair in the food, it wasn’t that great. I will not be dining here again.
The food was great and the wait staff was on point. It wasn't busy as we were only the second table in the establishment at 11 an for brunch. The bottomless drinks with brunch was well worth the price.
I took my mom here for Mother's Day and we were not disappointed. We are familiar with the brunch menu but we were still blown away when we got to taste everything. The Tropical French Toast is to die for and was the table favorite. The manager came around to every table with some of the dishes and wished a Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms who were there... that was a very nice gesture. When we went to leave my mom was given a beautiful bouquet of flowers and was wished a happy mother's day by some of the other staff members. This place just does not disappoint. I will continue to come back for all special occasions.
Enjoyed restaurant. Server was great. Wish there were no TV screens. Nice space otherwise and food was unusual and good.
The music was very loud. Lots of young people. Cooks vibes. Not great for an intimate meal
We were looking for a nice modern venue for brunch before the O's game and this was perfect. All the tv's at the main bar had sports on, but it felt much more upscale then your typical "sports bar". The food was what sold it for us. The chicken and waffle sliders or pork belly sliders if you're looking for a meat in your meal you can't go wrong. I had the Tropical French Toast and I'm a syrup guy and I didn't use any on this dish. It came out plenty sweet enough for my taste and the presentation doesn't hurt. Paired with the Passion Fruit Crush it was everything needed to get the Sunday Funday going.
Disappointed in the brunch atmosphere. Music was late-night bar loud so you had to yell to hear each other, seating was uncomfortable in high metal stools that dug into your hips and if you wanted a booth, they only fit 4 people or you could sit at "cocktail" height and lean over as you ate. Weird. The brunch menu was a little weird too. You had to sort of build your meal yourself through their ala carte menu unless you wanted to share small plates which is a pain when you are with a group and doing separate checks. The food was ok -very salty. The server disappeared halfway through our meal and we got someone that couldn't make coffee (it was his first time using a french press).
They made our bachelorette celebration spectacular!
Having the experience to try the brunch menu was overall an amazing experience. Not only the food was super tasty but the service was very close to perfect.
The waitress definitely gave us recommendation, made sure there were no dietary restrictions and offered to make some changes to some dishes if it was needed. She was extremely pleasant and fun to chat with her in between her serving us and other tables.
The atmosphere was sort of light intimacy which makes it perfect for all occasions. For me I think that whether you are doing a brunch/dinner for two versus a group brunch with a bunch of friends this work because it all depends on your friend group. The interior was so very beautiful and this was actually the first thing my group of friends recognised. This was previously Mad River Bar so when we walked in we were completely amazed.
The food was great and the pricing was appropriate. Some portions sizes were small and I would recommend for group of 5+ that you order 2 portions. For instance, the pork belly sliders were only 2, but the chicken and waffles slides were 3. The Mac n cheese was in a good enough size skillet but it was TOO TASTY to just have one.
Overall, these were some of my favourite dishes in addition to the crab Benedict, Nashville avocados and more!
First time being there and it was a great experience. Small plates that are great for sharing with friends. Great vibe and definitely plan on going back
The Charles did not disappoint. Their spring menu (both drinks and food) is to die for. They are truly becoming the best of the best. Do not miss out. I will be back to try their new brunch menu as well.
Delicious creative brunch options served tapas style and great for our foodie friends! Would definitely go back since there were other yummy options we didn’t get to try out.
Had a great time and loved the affordable but decent size small plates. Drinks weren’t too pricy either. If you used to go to Mad River you’ll be amazed by how they transformed the space it’s lovely in there now. The Cuban pretzel was delicious! Server was attentive without being overbearing. Other staff members were friendly and upbeat.
I was pleasantly surprised with The Charles! I had no issues finding awesome vegan options, and the place was super cute. I was a bit turned off by the TVs all over the bar, but that aside it was a good place. A little loud; but I’d go back.
The chicken and waffle sliders were wonderful. We have a difficult time judging the restaurant overall as we were there on St. Patrick's Day at 2 PM and we were the only people in the restaurant for almost our entire meal. The waitress seemed to be new and could not answer questions about the menu.
Food was delicious and not overly expensive. Probably wouldn’t go for a typical night out but definitely a special occasion
My friends and I wanted to reconnect after a long time and wanted somewhere to go that the food was going to be just as good as the drinks, we were not disappointed!! We ordered almost one of everything off of the menu and multiple house cocktails..there's nothing we didn't like. The service and atmosphere added to an awesome girls not out. Highly recommend!!
When having a girls night you’re all looking to try a little bit of everything, The Charles is perfect for that. After diving head first into their cocktail menu which had something for everyone, our server John was incredibly knowledgeable guiding us through the tapas/shareables menu, providing great recommendations such as the lobster roll Rangoon’s the perfect two bite portion(comes with 3 Rangoon’s). We also enjoyed the moroccan cauliflower, Nashville hot avocado, and tuna tartar tacos. By far the favorite dish was dessert, we choose the spilt milk and cookies. The presentation was incredible as the cookie dough comes served out on the mixing beater with a pool of vanilla cream and pistachio crumbles. All in all the ambiance was perfect for a girls night out. We *will* be back!
Amazing menu and incredible service. We will be back.
Went to meet a couple of old friends for a nice dinner and this place did not disappoint. Aside from the fact that the ambiance is beautiful, the servers and bartenders are incredibly friendly, and the menu has such a wide array of options, just about anyone would be happy eating here. The presentation of the food is a 10/10. We got the pretty boy cocktails, lobster rangoons, spin art mac (I want this everyday for the rest of my life), crab hummus, chicken and waffles, tuna tartar tacos, and finished off the night with the split milk and cookies (the cutest and most delish dessert ever --great for sharing!). All in all, I would definitely come again, and they have a great private area for parties and other events. Might plan a birthday or two.
I came in tonight to catch up with a girl friend from college and it was the perfect pick. The place had a good mid-week vibe with a good energy. Food was really tasty -we had the lobster rangoon which had generous portions of lobster through out. The hostess was friendly and the server was very knowledgeable. I look forward to returning!
I went to the Charles with a group of friends for Sunday brunch for the first time. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with modern, upbeat music and beautiful lighting and décor. The bottomless brunch option was $15 that included mimosas, bloody mary’s, orange crushes, grapefruit crushes, and sangria. The food is tapas style so we each ordered a few plates to share. The cobb salad deviled eggs, Nashville hot avocado, and chicken & waffle sliders were all delicious and beautifully prepared. I recommend trying the spilt milk & cookies or chocolate empanadas for dessert! The Charles has a classier brunch vibe than other places in Fed Hill and is a great place to go with a group of friends since they have shareable plates!
Great atmosphere with great service from the bartenders and servers. Dinner was very good as well, with a wide range entrees, that has something for everyone.
This was our first visit to The Charles and it didn't disappoint. A good variety of handcrafted cocktails along with a decent selection of draft and bottled beer as well as wine.
The menu is primarily tapas so it's a fun place to come with a party of four or more. The tapas selection was creative and featured a variety of vegetarian, chicken, and pasta options. Our favorites were the Lobster Roll Rangoon, Tuna Tartar Tacos, and Crab Hummus, we obviously like seafood. The simple hand cut fries were also good.
Our waitress was attentive but didn't hover. She knew when to show up to take our places away and ask if we wanted to place another order.
Our dessert was chipwitch sandwiches, mini-ice cream sandwiches that were the perfect end to our meal.
If you would like to try something different than the usual pub fare in Federal Hill then The Charles is the place to go.
I've been hearing good things about the food at The Charles so a group of us undecided on a brunch location decided to give it a shot. The entire group went with the bottomless special. To our surprise it was bottomless mimosa's, bloody's, sangria and orange crushes. The sangria was a hit. We tried a good bit of the menu. Favorites were the breakfast burger, pork belly sliders and the Nashville avocado. Best burger I've had in a long time! Our server Colleen was great.
The music was a little too poppy and too loud for lunch but the decor and food was great
Walking into The Charles I was stunned by the decor. The high ceilings lined with industrial bar framing made for a modern rustic feel. The host graciously guided me to my table where I met up with a couple of friends for a girls dinner. Waters were already set on the table for us with extra pitchers on each end and presliced lemons if we chose to have them. Our server greeted our table immediately, making sure to ask us if we wanted any thing other than water to drink at the moment. The drinks quickly arrived at the table and man were they both beautiful and delicious! In conjunction with dropping our drinks our water took our appetizer order which consisted of the curry gnocchi, caprese crostini, spin art mac, Moroccan cauliflower and lobster roll rangoon. My personal favorite was the Moroccan cauliflower. It contained such and abundance of different flavors and textures that it was exciting to eat until the very last bite.
I chose to go with the burger for my entree and I was beyond happy with my decision. The culmination of flavors and perfectly cooked medium burger was the best I have had yet. There was a mini crunch with every bite in the mini potato straw topping. I would highly recommend this entree. For dessert we indulged in mini chipwich sandwiches. Vanilla bean ice cream squeezed in between two soft chocolate chip cookies topped off with chocolate fudge. Do I need to say more?
The confused fruit and D.B. Seven were fan favorites around they table. They were both light and refreshing. All in all our experience at The Charles was incredible the service, food, and drinks were nothing short of 5 stars across the board. I will definitely be coming back here very soon!
The Charles has been a new favorite spot of mine since it opened it doors with a new name and new vibe. As soon as you walk in you can’t miss the extravagant shelf and tv wall. I love how the decor is so unique, precise and always has small things changing on the shelves. I can’t help to always catch myself glancing at it all.
The staff have always been so so friendly and attentive, which to me really makes or breaks a dining/bar experience, but these guys sure know how to make you feel welcomed.
Their Tin Man drink has been one of my favorites, and it comes out perfect every single time. And their food I’m sure you’re wondering about? It’s phenomenal. I could list all the dishes i love but then I’d just be writing the menu so here’s a few favorites. Every time i order the Caprese Crostini’s, something about the crunchy bread, smooth house basil ricotta spread with tomatoes and balsamic caviar makes me fall in love every time. The Kung Pao Quinoa is unlike anything I’ve ever had. The quinoa is cooked perfectly with delicious vegetables, makes you feel like you’re eating high scale Chinese food. The peanuts are a nice added flavor to the mix as well. Even though i am now a pescatarian, which i appreciate this restaurant a little extra since it provides so many options for me and vegetarians, the Burger and fries are top notch. Before i made the switch i ate that bad boy, and let me tell you, one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. You can get it with or without straw fries on top but i recommend going ahead and getting them. That’s a burger you just need to try to understand the greatness. As for dessert, the spilt milk and cookies takes you back to being a kid -who doesn’t love that?
Overall, The Charles has been a great dining and night life experience. They always have the best DJs playing, sports games are up on the big screen, they even have a party room up stairs to book private events! Be sure to take a close look at the menu, they always have something new!
AMAZING! Tonight we finally came to The Charles for food and we did not regret it. We had only been for drinks before and were excited to try the food as well! For drinks, We highly recommend the sagamore staycation, the Charles sangria, & confused fruit. These cocktails are amazing and handcrafted with care each time. Tonight we finally had an opportunity to try the food and it is nothing short of spectacular! We LOVED the Crab Hummus, BWG salad, Tuna Tartar Tacos, and Steak Oscar. The plates are pretty generous portions for being tapa style! The staff was super accommodating with dietary restrictions and provided great service all together. As someone who goes out in Fed Hill this is definitely one of my new favorites with a classy ambience and great place to go out with friends or on a date. There's no other place like this in the area to get a fun cocktail and great food!
Upon entering The Charles I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere. Beautifully back lit shelves covered the wall behind the bar. 5 large TVs sit in the center of the shelves all playing different sports networks. The music was at the perfect volume for the bar/restaurant vibe (loud enough to hear but soft enough to hold a conversation with your table). We were greeted by a friendly hostess who found our online reservation quickly and seated us in a beautiful center booth. We were given a food menu, a drink menu, and a wonderful happy hour menu (highly recommend!!).
After reviewing the menu and deciding on our food and drinks, I went with the House red wine (Malbec), the caprese crostini for an app, and the burger and fries as my entree. The red wine was divine and for $5 a glass I feel as though I got more than I paid for. The caprese crostini came next. The presentation alone was beautiful. 4 crostinis topped with Red and yellow tomatoes with a house ricotta and balsamic caviar (not the normal fish egg caviar.. have no fear). They were delicious. The perfect light appetizer I was looking for! When my burger came out I was beyond impressed. The plate was loaded with French fries (my weakness) and the burger was cooked PERFECTLY (medium). The burger juices were flowing and the cheese was melty and delicious.
When we were finished our meal we opted for dessert... let me tell you! I am not a sweets person by any means (I know.. I’m weird) but I just about died over the Spilt Milk and Cookies. Cold cookie dough on a mixing beater (AWESOME presentation) and a Vanilla Creme Anglaise to dip.. if you do anything right this week you will order this dessert.
All in all I had an amazing experience at The Charles. Lauren our waitress was attentive and wonderful. And the bartenders made our drinks perfectly! If you are looking for a sexy yet casual place to enjoy drinks and IMPECCABLE food then this is your place.
We had been meaning to go here since it opened. We were home for a few days and finally got to try it. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a warm feeling. I don’t like all of the TVs , but, despite them, it has a cozy ambiance. The drinks were very interesting, good, and beautifully presented. The food ranged from very good to absolutely wonderful. Our waiter was very pleasant, but not very attentive. One drink came almost 30 minutes after all of the others. I got the impression that this was a slow night (Sunday), and maybe they weren’t geared up for normal service, but I don’t know. They restaurant is in my neighborhood , the food was really wonderful, and I like how the place feels, so I will be back.
Great place very well decorated. Food portions vary dramatically compared to price. Somehow they ran out of coffee and had to go buy more before we could be served. Overall good but not amazing.
The food was awful. The scallops with Gouda grits are too salty to eat. The cauliflower was bland and needed salt. Lobster Rangoon was mainly cream cheese in an over fried wrapper. It’s very loud. I’m from New York City and this was far below that standard.
Great cocktails and really good food - was pleasantly surprised, given the space used to be occupied by Mad River. Was a bit loud, so don't think I would come here to catch up with an old friend, but food was excellent and the drinks were great.
The service was good, the food was good, the ambiance was good. The prices were a little higher than they probably should have been for the quality of the food but i get that they are trying to be an upscale restaurant even though its really just mad river with mood lighting and glassware instead of plastic cups (and Mad River IS what shows up on your credit card bill...not 'the charles').
The reason I would never go back nor would I suggest anyone I know go here is that I was literally charged 2 dollars for ice. I ordered a bourbon on the rocks and when the bill showed up (And yes I took a picture because it amazed me) there was a charge underneath the drink labled "rocks 2.00". C'mon guys...that's kind of rediculous. Certainly no issues on service but the management should be ashamed of themselves. Hope you enjoy your extra 2 bucks because you're definitely not getting a repeat customer...
We had dinner at the Charles with our 2 teens last evening to celebrate our anniversary. Our server was amazing, attentive and had a beautiful genuine smile throughout the evening! The food was wonderful and the small plates allowed us to try many different items and flavors. The restaurant is chic and modern. The noise level does increase as more people arrive during the evening. Our kids actually enjoyed the atmosphere as did we! Cocktails were refreshing and inventive. Thanks to the Charles for a fabulous anniversary dinner!
Our server was really sweet and personable! The tuna tacos she recommended were good. That being said the rest of the food lacked over all flavor and felt over priced for being so bland. Noise was not too bad and the esthetic was very cool. Booths were quite cozy!
Food was good, though at least two items from the menu weren't available, including the wedge for the wedge salad and one of the breads from the bread plate. Service was friendly and not slow.
We really didn't enjoy our experience, though, through no fault of the restaurant. There were two separate parties in front of us made up of drunk women. They were obnoxiously loud and kept cursing and talking like 14 yr. old boys who tried alcohol for the first time. We really should have asked to be moved as we could barely hear each other above all the cursing and other yelling.
this was on a Sunday lunch. If you don't mind drunk loudness then you won't mind this place. We hated it.
I cannot wait to try it again! We ordered the Hot Avocado, Tuna Tartar Tacos, Deviled Eggs, Beef Tartar and the Goat cheese cake. Everything was delicious although the fryer grease needed to be changed out. We mentioned it to the server who removed the items from our check even though we ate them (was just telling them for future dishes but appreciated just the same). The goat cheese cake was AMAZING and our friends had the Chicken & Waffle slider and said they wanted 700 more! Drinks are on the pricey side.
