The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.

Food was stunning and the set menu was incredible value.
A Michelin star restaurant. So our expectations were high. My starter was forgettable, arancini I recall. The fish mains were divine, although the courgette spaghetti left a watery residue after a while. The sweet was superb, baked custard... just wonderful. Fab service, maybe we will try an evening a la carte. :-)
fantastic food. highly recommend
great chefs, prompt timing on delivering dishes.
polite and friendly staff
We had a great evening. Food was excellent. We had a table by the window which was right opposite the car park so wasn't brilliant. Would definitely come again may be a lunchtime.
Our first meal at the Elephant and as regular visitors to this calibre of restaurant we thought it was up there with the best in its category. We took the tasting menu which is a great way to sample several of the house dishes. The wine flight is also worth trying to complement the food. Thoroughly recommend trying this place if you're on holiday in Torquay and want a special treat.
One of the great bargains is the set lunch. £25 for three courses of outstanding food. Lovely service too, with Micky being particularly charming and helpful. Just a great place, imaginative food made from the best ingredients and lovely people. Go!
A fantastic meal marred by a rather cafeteria like table setting. A table cloth would have helped.
Food and service excellent, although dessert was a bit anorexic
This was our 2nd time here and again it was a delight, it was our ruby wedding and the ambience was fantastic we were looked after so well and the food was excellent. we have resolved to book here for our anniversary each year as we enjoyed it so much.
Once again many thanks for a great night
Extremely enjoyable meal with informed and attentive service. Ingredients in dishes well considered and worked well together including variety in textures. Food was presented in a very attractive manner and was a great value.
We enjoy Fine Dining , The Elephant did not disappoint . We were celebrating my Birthday on Friday 27th July with a two night stay in Torquay at the Osborne Hotel, choosen due to the close proximity of great restaurants. The Elephant tasting menu with matching wine was pre-booked 3 months in advance. Great service as expected ,my favourite dish being the Seared Scallops, My wife the Duck all courses were superb and produce locally sourced.
Thank you to Simon and the Team , a great night.
There are just not the words to describe how amazing the lunch was!
Fabulous food, brilliant service and a lovely touch of a birthday card and special decoration on the dessert plate.
Highly recommend and will definitely be returning!
Delicious food but quite expensive for lunchtime menu
Lovely meal, my vegan requirements were met and exceeded expectations. Thank you
We had a lovely meal on Saturday evening at The Elephant. The service was exceptional and the food amazing. We got a bit hot but not much anyone can do about this superb summer.
Lovely lunch with my two daughters. Food was outrageously good.
The Elephant was absolutely lovely! I do not know why we haven’t been before, but what a find! A Michelin starred restaurant in Torquay.....?! It was a real treat for my husband’s birthday. Beautiful food, great wine and champagne and delightful staff. Great atmosphere too.
So good to be able to see into the kitchen to watch the talented chefs making the fab food. Starters, main and deserts were creative, interesting and incredibly tasty, giving you a mixture of flavours and textures.
We will be back!
Very small portions as you would expect ...The table were very cafe like! cheap and nothing fancy..it just didn't have the ambience for a fancy restaurant it really felt like a cafe!! We knew it wasn't cheap and we were not bothered about the cost £120 for 3 course and a glass of wine and water ..the main for me was tasteless .... sorry i wouldn't recommend to anyone ...i know you can get the same standard of food in other places at half the price.
One of a handful, in the Bay that is consistent with quality, over a period of 10 years. Minuses: 10% added on the bill for the service, it should be included in the price and same comment apply for the vegetables, they should not be an extra.
Couldn't fault it. Attentive (but not too attentive), knowledgeable staff, beautiful food visually and full of flavour. Excellent wine list and the introduction to the non-alcoholic seedip & tonic drink for our driver was inspired. We had the loveliest evening.
We will be recommending to all we meet.
I object to a review having to be at least 50 characters especially when the star rating explains my views on the restaurant.
Fantastic food as always. WE were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed our lunch date enormously. We will be back.
The Elephant for lunch is a must each time we visit Torquay. The food never fails to please, and we can't wait for our next visit! The location could not be better right by the harbour, and the lunch menu is particularly affordable for such quality food. A place not to be missed.
Our visit to "The Elephant" was our first ever and was a birthday celebration. Having eaten in many Michelin stared restaurants I could not help but compare the Elephant with other recent visits in Yorkshire and Wiltshire. Our meals here were more imaginative. At the Elephant our dining was simpler but never the less very good. Service was at times a little slow should you be in a hurry.
Our choice of "house wine" by the glass was excellent.
I have no problem recommending the "Elephant" It is what it is - Good food, beautifully cooked and well presented.
Extremely disappointing experience. No Wine Sommelier or Maitre d` from a supposed Michelin restaurant, service was barely average, had to pour own wine, food about OK. Chairs, tables and cutlery low grade, no linen. Generally very overated.
great food and service as always. never disappoints.
Really attentive staff, great food, would definitely recommend
Great meal with attentive service and can recommend for lunch/dinner
Food was delicious and staff were super friendly and attentive. A very well enjoyable evening
I booked the elephant for our 25th wedding anniversary and we found all the staff very friendly and helpful, as for the food, well it was absolutely fantastic! I would recommend anyone who is visiting Torquay and looking for a good evening out, to give the elephant a go...
I have eaten at quite a few Michelin Restaurants, I can quite honestly say that the food here was as good as The 2* Michelin Hand & Flowers in Marlow & much better than the 1* Le George in the George V Paris!!
The texture & presentation of the Hand Dived Scallops were the best I have ever tasted of a comparable Scallop dish!!
The Beef Fillet was cooked to perfection & the meat just melted in my mouth!! Again such fantastic presentation!!
The dessert was lovely & refreshing, just a shame presentation wise the elderflower foam swamped the dish, but fantastic flavours!!
The total meal just blew me away & I havn’t Had such a good meal that ticked so many boxes in a long time!!
Thankyou Simon & your team, fantastic cooking & brilliant presentation, cheers
Excellent food with all menu choices using at least some local/home grown produce. Our party of four had three differnet starters and mains and all were excellent
Awesome meal, the fresh crab starter was sublime, the Hake main course was also outstanding. And great value for the quality of food and service.
Although the food was good the service was not where you expect from a 1star Mich restaurant . No attention to table during meal not noticing drinks need replenishment also they forgot olives and before we could catch the attention of staff the starters arrived.
We will definitely be going back and having the tasting menu with all fish.
We have been going since it opened and have never been disappointed.
Went for wife's Birthday, card left on table,& "Happy Birthday" written on plate.Brill food
We love dining at The Elephant and it's our immediate choice for a special occasion. This time it was for our wedding anniversary.
We chose the taster menu, which was exceptionally good. Our complements to Simon on a superb menu!
Thank you for a wonderful evening - we'll be back soon.
Michele and Steve
Excellent food and very tasty and we'll presented. Service was excellent as well. Nice atmosphere. Will come again.
We ate here a couple of years ago, so booked a table, hoping for sea view dining. The ambience had changed immensely. No upstairs, sea view dining. seated in an obscure table positioned above a telephone and computer. Music playing was certainly not suitable for dining, possibly no more than a radio station. Staff were not welcoming or attentive. A waitress was wearing a skirt that hardly covered her underwear.
Once our bottle of wine reached the table, the waiter did not serve this with 'the ritual' style.
Although i noticed other diners were being served correctly.
Our starters were equisite, and tasteful. But the pork loin i ordered was served in my opinion very under cooked, & chewy. After sending this back to the kitchen, it was a little more edible, but definetly flavourless, and not a good choice on my part. The dessert appeared nothing more than tinned fruit, with foam. This meal was very disappointing. There are certainly better restaurants in Torquay. The elephant needs to go 'back to the drawing board' with a rethink on so many aspects, if striving for repeat business.
