The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.

Another excellent lunch as always. Beautifully prepared and presented with excellent service. Looking forward to our next visit.
For the set lunch menu it would have been nice to have a meat option for main course
We all had the tasting menu and paired wines. Quite simply one of the best meals I've ever experienced. Delicious, imaginative and delivered with excellent service. Only criticism would be the dodgy music soundtrack which was more fitting for a pub than a fine dining establishment.
The food at The Elephant restaurant was first class. We had the tasting menu and the food was wonderfully presented and all courses had an individual and fantastic taste. The chef was very accommodating by making minor amendments to some courses due to food allergies. The front of house team were excellent, very welcoming and knowledgeable about the food on the menu.
The décor of the restaurant was very tasteful with large mirrors giving the restaurant a bigger feel.
I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant if you want great tasting and well presented food, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Excellent food ,service and ambiance.very enjoyable experience.
Excellent meal as usual and outstanding value. Flavour combinations are innovative and interesting. Main course fish a little salty but otherwise delicious and fabulous desserts.
Excellent food, service and experience. Would deifinatly return.
Just a fantastic venue to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Unbelievable food supported by attentive top quality service. A must if you are wanting a fine dining experience in Torquay.
Excellent food combination and good wine list with freindly but not intrusive service
Nice food, well prepared, we often frequent The Elephant.
Friendly amiable staff.
Dislike obligatory “Discretionary service charge” included in total bill.
Top quality. My wife and I have dined at several Michelin starred restaurants in the past two years. The food at The Elephant was up there with the best we’ve eaten. The time between courses could have been shorter, but that’s being picky. We had a wonderful evening eating wonderful food
I am fortunate to eat in many high quality restaurants around the World. The Elephant is one of the finest restaurants. The quality of the produce the food the taste and the presentation is outstanding. Congratulations for consistently maintaining such a high standard.
the Elephant had been recommended so for a birthday celebration
experience we decided to 'have a go'. We were not disappointed
and give the restaurant full marks. A bit surprised that a table booked
for 1830 meant we could not enter the premises until that time: what if
it had been raining? Pleased to note some wines at reasonable prices
considering the Michelin rating and what it normally represents!
This was a truly outstanding lunch with amazing attention to detail. The staff were informative attentive but never overpowering
Food excellent - staff seemed a bit distracted - food superb - don't like the 10% service charge added to fixed price lunch - did I mention that I liked the food a lot.
I really enjoyed my birthday lunch - thank you.
Enjoyed the Seacoast feast lunch menu very much indeed lovely fresh fish
Absolutely spectacular meal again. Attentive service and a lovely atmosphere.
Like all previous visits to the Elephant the experience was fantastic with fabulous food that never fails to live up to its wonderful reputation.
We love this restaurant and it is always good. On this occasion, the starters were amazing but the main courses were less than hot and the fish a little over cooked. It didn’t detract from the experience however!
We had a very enjoyable meal with relatives from New Zealand. I was given a special Vegan menu and we all enjoyed the lovely bread. My husband and cousin had fish and our friend venison. All the dishes were beautifully cooked and well presented.
Very good meal, but noise created by the arrival of a hen party spoilt the peaceful ambience, as any large party, birthday or otherwise would.
Overall good, but atmosphere a little stuffy. The food very good but flavors in dishes, such as the scallop, were muddled by the sauce.
Absolutely outstanding food and not overly expensive at around £50 per head including wine and an aperitif. The service, whilst very good initially tailed off and became positively poor, which was a great shame as we were having a lovely evening. We waited 20 minutes after requesting the bill and ended up standing by the till, even then I had to go and find someone to take our money! Having said this I can't praise the food enough and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates fine cuisine.
Excellent time and good food
Very good service
Wines not over priced
Each dish should have its own veg. At least veg shouldn’t be charged for.
We felt a bit rushed until Mentioned it
A between course cleanser would have been good.
As regular diners over the years we went with friends and had a lovely lunch. The food was excellent and the staff friendly and efficient as always. This has to be our favourite lunch venue in Torbay.
The food was lovely.atmophere was very nice, friendly staff.will definitely go again
Excellent food and service, and overall an excellent meal, only slight disappointment was the room seemed overly large and lacking in atmosphere, partially due to empty tables.
Excellent food and service though !
My husband and I had not been for some time but we found that it was one of the best dining experience we had enjoyed for a very long time. We have eaten in some wonderful places around the country but this has shown itself to be as good with excellent service, a second time around, whereas other well known restaurants have been disappointing after the first visit. We shall definitely be back for my birthday 🎂 in November.
Everything was faultless. A relaxing lunch with no fuss or pretension, just delicious food served efficiently and unobtrusively. We look forward to another visit. Thanks to all.
The Elephant never fails to disappoint. Superb lunch menu, fantastic service.
Fantastic meal and service will definitely come back
The Elephant was recommended to us, and we will definitely recommend it too!
Food - amazing
Service - brilliant - very warm and friendly and professional
Lovely touches - happy anniversary card on our reserved table and written in chocolate on our desert plate.
We like to plan a little bit of our eating out for when we are on holiday, especially if there are fine dining options. The Elephant was the only place in Torquay we actually thought we would really like to eat at and I am pleased to say we weren't disappointed. Each dish on all three courses was sublime. We were both still talking about the flavours the next day. We even had a decent bottle of wine we had never tried which for a restaurant, was moderately priced. If ever in Torquay again, we will definitely be booking.
Was a really lovely evening! Food was great as was service! We enjoyed the attention we got due to it being our anniversary!
The Elephant is great place to have lunch or dinner its food is lovely and the service is very good. Definitely one of the best restaurants in the area.
As good as always. Great to meet with friends.
what makes things special is when the chef leaves the kitchen to talk to his diners, makes you feel special and completes the experience.
First visit. Thought it would be more formal but it's a moderately noisy brasserie and not what we expected or hoped for for circa £90 a head. 'Nibbles' unattractive and more like pub food. Mains and desserts up to standard thank goodness! Maybe a mint with the coffee? Just lacked the polish we were expecting for a Michelin star restaurant. Maybe I've been watching to much Professional Master Chef!!
Had a fantastic meal here for a first date, food is excellent and the service was great as well. Perfect place if you want to take someone out for a special meal.
Location was right by the harbor with underground parking available right across the road and easy walking distance for all of the nightlife Torquay has to offer.
As ever, a quality meal with excellent touches from a top rate chef
Wonderful food, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious! This is a gem in Devon. Michelin starred and great food from local producers and fresh, fresh fresh! My wife had dined here many times over the years and have ALWAYS enjoyed our meals. Very Impressive variety and unusual presentations to please the eye and palette. The 3 course luncheon menu is fantastic. Hard to choose off the main menu as well.
