The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.
On special days of the year and our special events a £20 deposit per person is required to secure reservations.
We do not except dogs other than service dogs with prior notice.
Another excellent lunch. Always fresh ingredients with stylish presentation. Professional service. The perfect place for an extra special meal.
The food at the Elephant was excellent - service was not quite as good as we hoped, we were left to ourselves for a while between courses, but the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The food was outstanding- innovative and perfectly cooked and presented. The ambience was serene, the staff were warm, welcoming and attentive to every detail. A card was left for my partner who’s birthday it was. We will definitely come back. My favourite restaurant in Devon.
Good value lunch for a restaurant of this quality and tasty fish dishes on the set menu. The service was not very friendly and the guy serving seemed inexperienced. He didn’t make eye contact, tell us what was on the plate nor did he ask if we had enjoyed our food. The woman server was rather brusque and lacking in warmth. It felt as if she was going through the motions of customer service. We would still recommend the restaurant to friends as the food was what we had gone for.
Fantastic food, brilliant service and friendly staff. A relaxed feel that wasn't intimidating. The duck leg was absolutely flawless and the olive oil sponge was amazing. Overall an incredible meal.
Excellent food and great value compared with similar standard in the South East. We had the tasting menu and it was delicious in every way, the wine pairing was also excellent and very cleverly matched to the food.
Really lovely to go to a high end restaurant and feel so welcome with children.
Really super food and very welcoming staff.
We have eaten here on a number of occasions over the last three years and the standard has been maintained consistently.
We rate it as one if the best restaurants in the southwest.
I took my husband here for a birthday lunch. We had a voucher and planned to use it for the tasting menu. Did not realise that at lunchtime you need to let them know in advance if you want the tasting menu - fortunately they were able to accommodate us without notice. The food was beautiful and worth a revisit but let down slightly by the uninformed staff. We expected the staff to know about the menu and be passionate about the food - not so here. Nevertheless, we will give this restaurant another go.
It was our wedding anniversary. The staff made the effort to place a card on our table congratulating us which was a nice touch. The staff were friendly and very professional. The food was excellent and we will definitely be returning.
Excellent food but the serviced left a little to be desired. We were left waiting nearly 25 minutes before anyone took our food order. To their credit the restaurant recognised this and waived the service charge that would automatically have been added to the bill. Otherwise no complaints. |The locally sourced fish dishes were excellent.
Very good food , good priced wine .Atmosphere a little lacking and bland
Unbelievably good value on the lunch set menu for top quality good. A gem of a find right on the Torquay harbour. Will be back.
Delicious food, well seasoned, good value lunch set menu.
This was by far the best food we had in Torquay while on holiday. The only complaint, its not open on Sunday night as we would have booked again before we left for home.
If you're in Torquay do yourself a favour and book, you'll not get in at night if you don't, a table and enjoy true fine dining at normal prices.
10 out of 10 for everything.
The food here is unbelievably good and the service is excellent!
Our “special treat” whilst away on holiday! Been on the list for a while so couldn’t wait to tick it off the list! The Chocolate Sphere replaced a similar dessert I’d had at The Hand and Flowers as the best dessert I’ve ever had! Absolutely outstanding! The entire meal was flawless! We’ll be coming back next time we’re back in the area!
Lovely meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary - nice personal touches made the night special .
Thanks to the Chef Owner writing The Local Heroes article in the Daily Telegraph I found out that there was a Michelin Star Restaurent in Torquay. We went with some friends & had a very enjoyable evening the food was great - the service was very good & it was good value. We will be coming again my only observation was my surprise that you provided special sharp knives for the Duck & Beef Fillet dishes the meat was so tender you could cut it with the normal knives.
Our first time and we really enjoyed it, especially the Sharpham cheese!
Over the moon and out of this world! The service was better than perfect, the food sublime, there is not a single thing I would chsnge! One of my best restaurant experiences ever.
Outstanding fine food and excellent wine, best so far
Nice rooms and tables. Not over the top with a calm relaxed ambience.
Great wine selection. Outstanding food. Staff attentive but not in your face.
Best meal I have had for a few years. I would recommend wholeheartedly.
As a newbie at this type of establishment, I was pleasantly surprised. Staff were thorough in their knowledge of the courses and very attentive.
We enjoyed a fabulous meal in Simon Hurston’s The Elephant Restaurant, which has held a Michelin star for 14 years.
Great value fine dining using fresh local ingredients, excellent presentation and friendly efficient service.
We would happily recommend The Elephant to family and friends.
Brilliant service, food was amazing. This was a special evening for us and we can not fault anything. Exquisite.
Excellent food cooked with high quality local ingredients. A special meal.
The food looks beautiful but even better is the clarity and variety of textures and flavours in each dish. The fish is caught across the bay; the vegetables from the chef's farm. The Elephant is not simply worth a detour; I travelled from London to Torquay especially to eat there and it was a splendid evening. I would have gone back the next night but that was a Sunday and it is closed. My only complaint is that it is not closer to London.
Fantastic food and very reasonably priced .. all seasonal produce and would highly recommend the tasting menu.. not too much food and didn’t leave full but was satisfied.. The wine paring is very generous though !
What it says on the proverbial tin. Delivered as expected
Outstanding food if there was to be a criticism I could’ve ate more
Beautifully presented using the best local ingredients, this place delivers on all levels. They also have a set lunch menu which is excellent value.
A lovely meal in a good setting. All the staff were efficient and friendly
Enjoyed a special birthday treat
We visit roughly yearly when we co e to stay in Torquay
We should have come in evening to have taster menu.
Love the food, amazing dessert, raspberry coulis both refreshing and delucious
Beautiful food and Excellent service. Lovely for a special occasion mine was a birthday gift, such a lovely treat.
An excellent meal in a lovely atmosphere The food was very high quality as you would expect but the experience was made perfect by the front of house staff who were so friendly and dealt with lady who we suspect had dementia so kindly
We enjoyed our Golden wedding anniversary meal thankyou.
Superb food, and the best value Michelin dining experience we have ever had.
The tasting menu was delicious. My wife and I had different favourite dishes, but all courses were superb. The service was friendly and informative. Tom & Micky both were very amiable, as was the waitress that served us. However, I would suggest that fly screens be fitted to the open external windows. There were several small flies that were 'buzzing' around whilst we were dining, that were slightly distracting. These were not flies associated with hygiene issues, but were outdoor species that had flown in through the open windows. A small inconvenience that fortunately did not spoil the overall experience. We would most certainly recommend the Elephant to all who would like to indulge in a fine dining experience.
Another excellent lunch at our favourite restaurant in Torquay.
