Welcome to The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.

Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.

All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.

On special days of the year and our special events a £20 deposit per person is required to secure reservations.

We do not except dogs other than service dogs with prior notice.

We took the set menu for our lunch. The food was nicely prepared and decorated. They are also yummy. Service was good but a bit slow from time to time, and one of the staff hardly ever smile. But I think they were efficient. To us, it’s great value for money.

We had a great evening at the Elephant, which we visited whilst on holiday in the area. The food was excellent, with plenty of choice on the menu. I absolutely loved my rhubarb and panna cotta dessert in particular. The wine is fairly priced and we enjoyed a bottle of well flavoured Prosecco with our meal. Service was attentive on arrival and throughout the evening. I would definitely recommend and we hope to make a return visit when we’re on holiday again later this year.

The food, the service was fantastic and cannot really fault. My wife needed a gluten free alternative and the chef adapted his menu to her liking.

We had a lovely evening meal at The Elephant - the food was excellent - not large portions but very fresh and well prepared and very satisfying. The only slight negative part was the position of our table . It was few feet away from the bar counter and someone was crushing ice in a hand grinder and it was very loud . There was no one at the bar but I guess he was preparing drinks Apart fro that everything was perfect. Thanks

What an amazing restaurant! Lovely atmosphere, friendly and welcoming staff and the food was out of this world. The lunch menu is great value for money, three courses for £24.95. Definitely find time to visit this place.

I've been going to the Elephant for many years and the quality of the food has got better and better each time I visit, and this was no exception.

It was a quiet mid week night when I visited and as always I received excellent service. The noise level was put at moderate due to a rather loud table of six which was very unusual for the restaurant. I was accommodated away from this group further showing the bespoke attention to detail from the staff. Definitely going again.

We first visited The Elephant in October 2016 and the experience was so poor that we said we'd never return. However, never say never so we decided to give it another chance, for our son's 30th birthday and our wedding anniversary, and we are very pleased we made that decision. Compared to the previous evening there was no comparison. We chose the 'A la Carte' and each course was really good, well served, full of tastes and textures and portion sizes that were spot on. Unlike last time, this time the plates were warm, (shouldn't that be the norm for a Michelin-starred restaurant?) which meant the food wasn't cold after a couple of minutes. The staff were polite, attentive and prepared to have a chat (a wonderful lady from Berlin). The wines we chose, especially the season recommendation of a lovely Zinfandel, were very reasonably priced, including the house champagne. Criticisms, just a couple. The revelation that the lamb on the menu was not local was a real surprise. Every buthcher around us in Kingsbridge, only a stone's throw away, is selling local spring lamb, so why did the lamb on the menu come from New Zealand? Secondly, it would be great if the staff could, as they served each dish, give you a quick reminder of what it consisted of, even if only a reiteration of what it said on the menu. However all in, a great evening and we will certainly be back.

It was our first visit to the Elephant & to Torquay & we had a lovely time.
From the help received when making our original reservation to the lunch experience itself, everything was superb. The staff were really friendly, the table location was great & the food outstanding.
Thank you!

Lovely experience. Excellent service. The only reason we wouldn’t give 5 stars is the fact they charge extra for sides . It makes for an expensive lunch .

Went for the first time with a friend who is gluten free and we couldn't have had a better experience - all options were advised and or adjusted to suit the dietary restriction. Food was delicious, fine dining but not too fussy. We had the set lunch menu and it was very good value. Highly recommend.

The quality of service and food was of a very hugh standard. The steak was exceptional.
The staff there are lovely and very attentive. I was never kept waiting for anything. There is a service charge added to the cost but i dont think anyone would feel short changed by this.
It is certainly a restaurant i would visit again.

Delicious food, beautifully presented as you would expect from this type of restaurant. Did feel it was expensive. Service was very slow. 3/4 of an hour for food to be served. A little bit soul less, the interior did not make you feel as though you were fine dining.

Once an initial misunderstanding had been sorted with great charm, we settled in to greatly enjoy our celebratory meal. The menu was imaginative and the food delicious. Another nice touch was that as it was my husband’s birthday, a complimentary mini dessert arrived with Happy Birthday in big bold chocolate handwriting...much nicer than a cake which he would have wanted.

My wife and I chose from the very reasonably priced lunch menu — all courses really outstanding. I cannot find fault with this restaurant: our kir royales (with peach, at our request, rather than cassis) were perfect, as were our wines by the glass (I had to drive afterwards, so discretion was clearly important...). My wife's fish main course was perfectly done (lesser restaurants far too often overcook their fish) and my pork belly almost literally melted in the mouth. The dessert was extraordinarily good (and the coffee delicious — not always the case regardless of the standing of the restaurant).

We have only heard good things about this restaurant and it didn't disappoint, the food was definitely up there with the Rodean and Orestone as other local places for good food. Don't forget to order side of vegetables as this isn't included with the mains, pricing was as expected and the wine list extensive with a good choice for lots of budgets we had the Picpoul de pinet which was very tasty and also one of the cheaper ones! we are already booked in for a return visit this says it all....
