I've been to The Guild a number of times with very positive experiences, however, this visit fell short. My dining companion and I both ordered the 3 course set menu for lunch and it took an hour for our main dishes (2nd course) to appear. For a business lunch, this is far too long. The 3rd course dessert was disappointing - the strawberry shortcake was dry and just sort of tasteless. That said, the 1st course cucumber salad was delicious.
We were there for a birthday. Beautiful table outside. Service was so slow. Taste of Simmer menu looked great. Bean dip was excellent. Mains were cold when they arrived. We had friends in from out of town and they needed to hit the road so we did not complain as there was no time. Resorted to getting deserts wrapped to go.
Good service, nice space, big patio. Pretty disappointed with some of the food. We went for summerfeast... cod critters were good but salmon tataki was cooked well done and very small. Meatballs from actual menu had a burnt taste to them. My husband's braised beef rib had the same burnt taste as the meatballs, very tender but taste was off. My cauliflower steak entre was tasty. Both Desserts were good but nothing to rant and rave about. Overall disappointed and likely won't return.
We enjoyed the atmosphere and it wasn't too loud to have a conversation. Arrived t 7 pm and there was a bit of a.delaynin our reservation, otherwise dinner was great. We enjoyed the summer feast selection.
This was my first time to The Guild and it was as delicious as I expected. The summer feast fixed price menu was delicious to share with my friend. I highly, highly, recommend everyone try the carrot cake. It is sublime!
As good as always, The Guild never disappoints! Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Perfect for business lunches.
Our server Jose 'made' our experience!
Being a group of ladies, we were a little concerned with the location of the bathrooms - a person in our group went down 3 floors and was alone in a somewhat 'creepy'/threatening situation. Perhaps a waiter coudl ask a lone woman going to the bathrooms if they coudl walk down with her. It was a good situation when other women were already down there.
The overall negative review is due to the fact that the server was neither professional nor accommodating. He seemed annoyed that we didn’t ordered alcoholic beverages even though I disclosed both of us were driving. To which he responded, “that’s what UBERs for” he continuously pressured us.
Truth is my friend has been recently diagnosed with depression and is on medication, in solidarity I choose not to consume any wine. He never filled up our water glasses and we had to ask him three times for lemon.
We ordered the pizza and a burger to split but he got a bit annoyed when we turned down the offer to order sides or a starter. We proclaimed that it would be enough food for us but thank you. He then berated us because we didn’t have any vegetables. So we asked him for recommendations and he said....mushrooms!?! a side of mushrooms with a burger and pizza, I was expecting more along the lines of a salad. Maybe he just wasn’t knowledgeable of the menu?
When our food was served he actually removed our water glasses off the table to “make room for our food” leaving us with no water, which we asked for but he never brought.
When our meal arrived he never asked how it was because he never came back. I had to go in search of ketchup for our fries which I think the manager finally brought me. A different girl brought our bill and took our payment.
Just really didn’t feel valued as a consumer, shame cause the food is quite good
We booked the guild for our anniversary celebration dinner. We were very excited to try it out for the first time having seen the great reviews but we were met with disappointment.
To make a long story short there was a rather long hair found in my food and it put us off (only about 1/4 into our meal) and we ended up not finishing anything past that point as it was quite off putting. At first they only compensated us for the food that had the hair in it and they didn’t seem to be too apologetic, to us it seemed quite obvious to compensate us for the rest of the meal because it wasn’t touched. We were told that it happens and other guests just continue to eat.(?)Eventually after unneeded back and forth with the staff the other meal on the bill was taken off.
Overall really disappointed with the service and the way were treated there it was a very unpleasant thing to experience! Definitely will not return.
I would recommend but don’t go during “Happy Hour” as there are no real savings and it seems the service is intentionally slow so that you are unable to order more ‘specials’ from the happy hour menu.
Amazing dining space indoors and patio. Impeccable service and great value food and drinks menu.
This was not a good experience for us. We booked a promotion that was not honoured. We requested the special which was not available, after some additional review of the menu we asked to substitute vegetables instead of french fries due to health risks which was approved, then we were charged an additional $15. upon departure we were escorted to the washrooms as we were not able to be in the building without supervision. A very different experience from times past.
This is a great restaurant with beautiful decor, helpful staff and a very tasty menu. My friends and I enjoyed our visit very much and plan to come again soon to try another round of tasty dishes.
Our waiter was great but his helpers were not. Ex. We would ask for horseradish the helper would leave and then go to the bar stand and talk to other staff. Then forget to bring it. But our waiter was very accommodating throughout.
Food was ok. Steak was tough. The octopus dish tasted as though just boiled not grilled. Alcoholic Drinks tasted watered down. My family felt bartender was a amateur.
The restaurant had a few other tables that night but not super busy.
I expected more for what we paid.
We are sorry to hear about your recent experience at The Guild. My name is Cam Pinkney and I am the General Manager at The Guild. Are you able to contact me directly at 403-389-4555 to discuss further and see how we can get you back in for a true experience here.
Squid was dry and overcooked but the server removed it off the bill which was good. Ordered a steak because it's a steakhouse, but it was overcooked and over priced. Drinks were inconsistent. Ordered the same drink twice but the taste and ingredients were not the same. Water was always topped up so that was a positive. Service was friendly and attentive when we first arrived but then became very slow and non existent after ordering food. We were celebrating a birthday but didn't have time to order dessert because the service was so slow. Ambiance was great and so it has potential, but because of the negative experience with food, drink, and service, I wouldn't recommend it.
Really good steak great service and great location.
I hadn’t had my beef brisket or beef on a bun yet for Stampede and so chose here in hopes for satisfying that. There was a beef brisket on the regular menu and some Stampede specials but those specials didn’t resemble anything Stampede like. (Tacos etc) so I went with the menu brisket. It came looking like a giant piece of chocolate cake with a few kernels of corn and grains sprinkled on top. It wasn’t what I was expecting but it was tasty nevertheless. My guest ordered prime rib and it came the he likes it - rare.
Service was great, outdoor patio was pleasant covered out of the rain.
Love the location of The Guild, beautiful restaurant and food and service was superb!
Excellent spot to sit on Stephen Ave, food is consistently really good and worth the price. Good beer selection as well
The waiter was not friendly and welcoming at all. I am a bit disappointed
food is always excellent - cobb salad very tasty!!
We really enjoyed our lunch. It was great to sit on the patio in the sunshine. Thanks for the lovely meal!
Our server was the best part of our evening. The wine we ordered they had to send someone to find but brought some Prosecco. Unfortunately all of our food was cold. We were disappointed with the menu. We won’t be back
The service started out good but wained throughout the evening. Food was good but overpriced - $36 for trout that when arrived was a small square that was not what I was expecting. Interesting atmosphere, we were there early on a Saturday so not loud at all.
The Guild is an awesome place, great bar selection and food was fantastic, I had the Octopus and my wife had the fried chicken, both were excellent and fairly priced.
Great service, Sydney was great. Fantastic burger but a but more char would be 10/10, side salad could use something extra.
This restuarant was incredible, I would definitely recommend the guild to anyone who wants unreal food and a great night out.
Overall a very good first experience.
We were so disappointed with our visit to the Guild. It was a special celebration meal and to be honest we thought it was a really poor.
The food was nothing to write home about, (I had never had such dry chicken, and the fried rice had been cooked within an inch of its life!!) my fellow guests described their food as bland and dry at best). Our server had obviously had better days, because her attitude and interaction with us was brusque at best, maybe she had somewhere else she would have rather been. A nice chap delivered the decent bottle of red wine we had ordered and was very pleasant, he and the wine were the best part of the whole evening.
Will not be coming back anytime soon nor will we be putting it on our recommended restaurant list.
I’m sure you can do better owners!!
Excellent lunch and good service. Only issue with sitting on the patio is the homeless who wander up looking for a handout.
Everything was great! Good venue for all occasions -business lunches/dinners, celebrations or a quiet night out with a significant other or friends.
Always a fantastic spot to eat. I would go there everyday if I could. The new octopus addition is exquisite!
The Guild is an excellent place to people watch if you are on the patio. The ambience inside is really nice as well. They have changed their menu and many of our favorites are gone. We loved the seafood Penne and the margarita pizza was good. They do have excellent cocktails and very pricey bottles of wine. Our waiter seemed quite annoyed with us asking questions on the menu as he stated he had not tried much. He did not know much about the wine either. We are good with someone not knowing everything but a friendly "I'll find out would have been nice". We used to go here quite often but this was a disappointing time. We always look forward to friendly people and service - we did not find it this time at The Guild.
Had the wild Squid as an appetizer, very good. Easily the best steak I have had in a very long time. Highly recommend this restaurant!
I made reservations for my supervisor and work colleagues. They were very happy I sent them there. They really liked everything. Especially the food. I will be sending more people there for sure.
Food was very good but service was very slow. Reservation was 11:45 our food was served at 12:42 had to rush to eat and get back to work. You are in a great location you need to improve on service or people will stop coming. I have heard this from several people.
We had previously been at the Guild and had a wonderful dinner so my husband decided that this is where he'd like to have his Father's Day dinner. We both had pasta (same as last time) and my pasta was just like glue and my husband's was so peppery and almost inedible but he was so hungry he ate it in spite of the horrible taste. I'm assuming my pasta had been left in hot water for a 'very' long time. I sent back the pasta and left starving and very disappointment. As we had come from the far northwest I doubt we'll ever go back.
Great spot for dining! I was celebrating a work anniversary with my fiancé and the atmosphere was perfect. Not too busy and not loud. The service was great, my fiancé and I enjoyed the food as well.
Such a fantastic place, I would definitely recommend The Guild to anyone looking to dine among the best the food and drink establishments that Calgary has to offer!
