It was Valentin Day. The food was cold. Service was extremely slow. Took forever to get a menu and a drink. I was looking forward to this experience but it was disappointing

Most beautiful and comfortable setting in the Meech Lake area, deliciously prepared food and warm service. A must for nature lovers of all levels.

Please have a bilingual menu for the NCR!
The server smelled of smoke from cigarettes.
One order was wrong...
Had to go to the kitchen to get service.
Otherwise, we loved the place, scenery, decor but, definitively, OB needs extre attention in the dining room and service.

Wonderful off-the-beaten-track mansion with magical old-world ambiance but a modern touch. Pricey but delicious small plates with a vegetarian option. The dining room of this boutique hotel is open to non-residents for lunch and supper only on Saturdays and Sundays. Gracious service, wine by the glass option with each course. If you like dining at The Mill in Wakefield, you will love O'Brien House overlooking Meech Lake.

Went for the Sunday lunch tasting menu. Food was delicious, with an excellent wine pairing, all for a great price. Atmosphere is beautiful. Got to sit right by the fire with gorgeous views of Gatineau Park out the window.

1. The hotel and restaurant are beautifully restored. Great art, nice furnishings, cozy ambience. The owners did a very good job restoring the O’Brien mansion; the building is striking as you drive up the driveway and is definitely worth seeing.

2. The vast majority of the food was locally sourced and seasonal. Since we visited O’Brien’s in November, this meant that the plates were not mind-blowing with creativity. They could have stepped out of a strict we-only-source-local mentality during this time of year.

3. After seven (very small) courses, my wife and I left the restaurant still hungry - which was disappointing.

4. In our view, five of the seven plates were under-seasoned.

5. The service was friendly but the wine pairings were not well explained. More care could have been given during serving to explain why each wine was paired with each plate.

6. The meal was more expensive than what you would spend for a similar experience at Beckta. Beckta however, has objectively better food.

7. When we asked for the restaurant to call us a taxi, we were told, “there are no taxis that service this area.” That’s fine and is ultimately on the guests to coordinate ahead of time however, it should be made clear on O’Brien’s website - particularly since they’re promoting a wine pairing menu. The serving staff were able to secure a Gatineau-area taxi for us however, the taxi charged $60 to go from O’Brien's to downtown Ottawa (an UBER ride to get from downtown to O’Brien's was less than half that price).

8. O’Brien’s is still new and should be given a chance to sort though these growing pains.

This is a great addition to the Ottawa/Gatineau offer. Outstanding location and surprising food. The only reason it is not 5 stars is because of the underwhelming wine pairings. Selections from the LCBO? They might want to check out the nearby L’Orée du bois for ideas.

Beautiful millionaire’s house turned into an inn which is physically perfect in every detail. Food menu was limited to soup, sandwich and salad and 2 price fixe, one for vegetarians. The soup/sandwich were perfect for a rainy weekend lunch. The price fixe included sturgeon pieces in broth and what was called “P.E.I beef tenderloin. The meat was not a piece of tenderloin. It was tasty but not as advertised which has seriously affected this review. Also the amiable waitress needs to learn about the wine list. Where is it from, who makes it etc. We loved the Inn and despite the issues we’ll go back when we are next in Quebec

Absolutely amazing! I only put 4 stars in overall because I thought the wine selection has a way to go before it can match the elegance of the food

This was our first visit to The O'Brien House and it was lovely. The food was incredible - creative and beautiful - and the service was wonderful. Our only complaints would be the noise and the decor. The decor is nice - the whole place is beautiful - but it has a 'corporate' feel and could be warmed up a bit. The Canadian art is wonderful and helps a lot but it has a little work to do there. And perhaps, as part of that shift, the dining area could be improved. We were two so sat at a table off to ourselves but the dining area was very loud throughout the evening so I can't imagine sharing a meal there with friends. We will definitely be back, however. We had a very special evening.

This is an expensive experience but, given the scenery, ambiance and food, it is a treat well worth it. Do yourself a favor and go while there is still day light.

L'endroit a été vraiment bien rénové et est très beau avec les feux dans les cheminées et les belles oeuvres d'art qui sont présentées.
Nous reviendrons pour prendre un verre car le lieu est magnifique.

I was fortunate to dine at the O'Brien house with my colleagues last friday for our annual Christmas party and the evening was wonderful! Superb ambiance having pre-dinner drinks by the fireplace, and the exquisite 5 course menu was beautifully presented and delicious! Service was excellent. A real gem tucked away in the Gatineau park.

I prefer two normal offerings not 10-12 bite size nibbles. It takes the server longer to describe every detail of the magic the chef has provided than it does to eat it! Not my style. The wine pairing was weak. All Canadian and not great - a couple too sweet. However the property is amazing!

My wife and I went there for our 5th year wedding anniversary and everything from their service, food and atmosphere were absolutely amazing. I had the Omnivore course and my wife had the Vegetarian course. We also had the wine pairing to go with our meal. The residence manager, James, as well as our waitress (unfortunately we forgot her name) explained every dish and wine very clearly and the timing of each dish/wine was perfect. This is definitely a unique experience that everyone has to try!

Perfect for those who wants to enjoy a true culinary experience. Your establishment really does live up to its expectation (and more). Food and wine served was perfect. Service was impeccable. Every dish served was explained very well, as well as the wine. It’s one thing for this restaurant to serve the sumptuously delicious menu, it’s a bonus to have a waitress who could explain very well what one is eating; this really sets O’Brien House apart from the other restaurant in Ottawa. A job well done! Definitely promoting this place to everyone we know .

Our second visit was not as great as the first one. This time the service was more professional and we did not need to ask for clean cutlery for each service! But the food was a bit less adventurous than we had experienced before and at times lacked seasoning to our taste. the mises en bouche were very tasty but rather ordinary, the duck tartar was a bit bland but the doré was perfectly cooked, as were the pork and the beef. Dessert was very tasty as were the mignardises. Wine pairing was fabulous and we’ll be going to the SAQ to buy some of these pearls that our host James introduced us to.

What a beautiful location and experience. Everything from the time we walked into the restaurant to the time we left the hotel the next day was amazing.

The service , The food, the wine parings everything was perfect.

Sitting at the table and only being 15 Minutes from downtown Ottawa made it very relaxing and surreal.

It felt like we were on vacation In just that short time for being away. I would recommend Chefs and his teams food and James and his teams amazing experience and attention to detail on everything. Above 5 star !!!

We will be back. Thank you

We arrived on opening night with another foursome- both had confirmed reservations only to be locked out of the restaurant. After coercing the chef to open the door, he told us- rather rudely- that the restaurant was closed and there was ‘nothing he can do- we should have had a phone call or an email.’ When we protested we’d come from over an hour away, he didn’t apologise but told us they had problems with their liquor licence. The chef pretty much closed the door back in our face. Needless to say, after hundreds of restaurant visits, I was left stunned and hence the 1 star rating. Mistakes happen but don’t leave your first batch of customers literally out in the cold.
