The Root Cellar
Our mission is to change the food system that affects all of us. We believe that food is political, that the choices we make about food -- what we choose to eat and whom we choose to support by doing so -- resonate through our community, economy, and planet. At the foundation of this project is a commitment to invigorating our community, discovering the plenitude of our local foodshed, supporting sustainable agricultural practices, and working cooperatively.
When "The Only on King" discontinued their business a few years back, they had recommended The Root Cellar. I brought my husband here for his birthday. Overall we had a great experience, however when our featured soup arrived we noticed there were no crackers or bread. We asked the server if we could have some, and she said it would cost us $2.00 for the bread (toast). When the toast arrived there was no butter, or anything on the toast, by then the soup was gone. We weren't certain ow of what to do with the plain toast I have just never really experienced this before, thought it was a bit unusual to not provide butter or a substitute.
Fantastic local spot with a compassionate local menu. Very vegetarian/vegan friendly.
Table settings are far too close, don't want to hear my neighbours talking!! Spead out the tables!!
There were not enough people in the restaurant to JAM us in as you did!!
We are regulars and should not be treated like this!
Was our anniversary, was hoping we could have an intimate dinner, NOT!!!
Great food and experience. Only disappointment was that two of three main entrees were not available. Our party of eight considered leaving at this point however decided to stay due to keeping the special night out together simpler. No steak or cod was available?? Would have been nice to know. Felt somewhat cheated but the food we did order was very good. Would return.
This little restaurant with its unassuming name hides a gem that anyone that enjoys great food should visit. The atmosphere is eclectic but cozy. We had a couple of appetizers that were delicious. I got to sample a craft ale before I ordered and then the main course came. Wow! I had a curry dish. My husband a fish dish and my son a burger. The food was absolutely excellent. Paired with the friendly staff, this restaurant is a hit and a recommendation from a self labeled foodie. Don't miss it!
Food was great. Restaurant cleanliness could have been a little better, but wasn't bad. Had my water served with a fly in it when I got there lol, but the server quickly swapped it out for another.
I really like the atmosphere and food.. Just found it quite noisy.. Hard to talk over the noise
Fantastic food and excellent service. Food and drinks were unique but not weird, tasted great and portioned well. Highly recommend this restaurant for a date, small group or just a nice meal.
Server was great, food was well prepared. Thank you.
Great service and great food! Loved the space! We had a great time. Would definitely come back.
Loved it. Six of us all loved it. Great food, fantastic wait staff, excellent beer, loved the ambiance. Too bad I live 1 1/2 hours away.
This place is the best! The space is incredible, filled with local art and very unique design features. Staff are always friendly and their integrity in supporting local farmers and food initiatives is unparalleled in the region. The most ethical spot to eat in London, hands down.
This was my third time at The Root Cellar. This time I went with a friend from out of town. Perfect atmosphere to catch up. The tables are pretty close to each other but we went early when it wasn’t too busy. I had the bison burger with fries. The bun was perfect. Their fries are delicious, especially with the spicy mayo. My friend ordered the sweet potato pizza with jalapeños which came with fries. She upgraded to the truffle fries which were also delicious. Friendly, helpful and efficient service. I am looking for an excuse to go back soon.
Great food not only for vegetarians and vegans; the buffalo burger or the steaks are delicious too. Cozy. Nice overall concept.
First time there and food was so fresh!
Cute restuarant love that they use local.
We had a reservation for 7 and we had great service and a great meal
Great vibe, great prices but the food wasn’t amazing. The steak was over cooked on both our plates and no better than what we would make at home but the outing was very nice otherwise and well priced
Excellent locavore food, kind, friendly inclusive service. Our guests were very happy.
Amazing food as always! We will definitely be going back in the near future :)
The menu selection is perfect with a great balance of offerings from plant-based sources. The staff are knowledgeable, courteous, and helpful.
However, as more people came to enjoy the fantastic food, the din became unbearable. We could not hear one another when even leaning across the table. It made for an awkward experience with conversation broken and loud.
Also, I am a Poutine fan and snob. I had the miso gravy on mine and shut my eyes to focus on the explosion of flavours! Disappointment shortly followed to find the fries, while loaded with character, were indeed COLD. The hot gravy was not enough to heat through the fries which caused me concern as to how freshly prepared the fries might have been. The curds were reasonable though too few and not fresh. I like my curds squeaky new.
Well done folks! Tasty food and good service.
The Root Cellar is the only restaurant that I go to. I eat a clean vegan organic diet i.e. no salt, oil and sugar. I love the Captain Planet Bowl, ice tea no sweetener added and matcha tea! I have bought lots of gift certificates for friends. My husband eats a standard north American diet and is very happy with your selection. We bring lots of family and friends. I am so happy that you don't have vegan junk food on the menu.
hadn’t been in a while. drinks were great. food was totally delicious. noise level was ridiculous. we could barely hear each other. i love supporting businesses like this but the nose level will make me hesitate for sure.
Always great food, great beverages and great atmosphere.
Love this place. Pizza is fantastic
We had another fabulous meal at The Root Cellar. The service was very attentive. They didn’t rush us even though it was quite busy so that was a treat in itself. The cod and the bison burger were both delicious as was the chocolate peanut butter tart. Perfect night!
The pizza was delicious! We really enjoyed the garlic strips as well. The ambiance was lovely and the service impeccable. My hubby and I will be back for another date night soon. Thank you!
I don't like the new menu focusing on pizza. I thought they changed it back to better entrees based on the menu on the website but I was disappointed that actually the website wasn't updated.
Service was great. Menu items priced slightly on the high side but they are farm to table so it was fine. Could have used more variety.
My favourite food spot in OEV! The food is always delicious, service is friendly and a very relaxing atmosphere.
The Shroom Wrap and Kale Caesar salad was delicious! Service was quick and our server was very friendly!
Terrible service and slow, food missing pets like chives and certain veggies. Bland tasting, tofu supposed to be marinated and tasted like it came right out of the package. Took an hour and 15 mins to get served.
Four of us were there after Fringing for a birthday. We haven't been there in years and we loved everything. Definitely will be back!
The servers were very helpful and patient. The food was excellent.
Food and service was amazing. The beet tartare was delicious!
Our party enjoyed this restaurant. Unique ambiance. Food was great. Service was ok. However, why does a largely "vegan" or "vegetarian" menu, translate to price jacking? Eventually, most restaurants are going to have all of these options, so the goal should be to make the best possible food, at a good and fair price. Otherwise, you'll price yourself out of the market. Wine prices were also too high ($12 for a 6 oz Chardonnay? Come on). I wish this restaurant every success, but if prices are going to be that high, then portions have to come up to justify the value. I'll give it another try some time.
Hi there, thanks for sharing your thoughts, and I'm glad you enjoyed your food. I just want to reach out to clarify that we use 90%+ certified organic ingredients in our dishes, with 80%+ of ingredients sourced locally when seasonally available. That means our food cost is often 50-100% more expensive than in conventional restaurants, but we work hard to keep our prices fair and on par with other restaurants with a similar feel. Thanks, Ellie
Great food and excellent service. Portions are quite large
My meal was flavourless and overcooked. I went against my instincts and chose a bison burger on a bed of greens. Undressed greens. Bland. My burger was overdone, tough, and only the caramelized onion gave it flavour.
The man in my life chose what he typically would — pasta. In this case, smoked trout and bacon. He loved it. Our local wine selections were weak and not sufficiently robust. The restaurant was attractive and the service was excellent.
Won’t be going back!
Tasty food that is norishing and creative. Interesting atmosphere and good service. Lots of variety on the menu. A great place to enjoy a meal with family and friends.
What a nice surprise to find this place. The food and ambiance were excellent and the service was over the top! We will definitely make this a regular dining spot when we are in London!
