Batesville’s Historic Boutique Destination Gets a New Name:

HPH Hospitality announced today that the Sherman House has been renamed to The Sherman to commemorate complete renovations and the reopening of this historic destination.

The Sherman will include both the original two-story building of The Sherman House as well as the adjacent four-floor building, formerly the American Furniture Company.

Renovations beginning in the summer of 2016 updated the restaurant, meeting space, and the 22 hotel rooms and added the Black Forest bar. Further renovations ongoing in 2017 will focus on turning the first floor of the old factory into a large German Gasthof or pub as an ideal locale for sports fans and families.

Ultimately, The Sherman will offer several new venues for guests to meet, entertain, celebrate, stay over as well as shop.

    Just returned from dining here. Food was excellent! Saurkraut balls and sauce were great and Best Wurst dinner was terrific. We'll be coming back.

    We flew into Cincinnati to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary and drove to Batesville for our special evening since my wife and I meet I this city. We had asked for a private booth prior to scheduling the trip but once we arrived, we were told that the booths were first come, first serve and our table that were to be seated was adjacent to the requested booth that we requested. Instead of celebrating our anniversary at the Sherman House, we drive one hour back to Cincinnati for a nice dinner on the river. Do not make this restaurant a destination for a special occasion.

    My husband enjoyed his food. Mine was bland and cold. Our waitress must have been Houdini because she disappeared. We had to ask another server for refills on our drinks. She did reappear to give us our bill. Last time we will visit.

    The food was superb. Each one of my group ordered a different entree, and each one was delicious. The bar is cozy, and the dining room has white tablecloths, something seldom seen today. It is a charming restaurant with marble floors and quaint booth seating, as well as tables. The staff is very attentive, and our food arrived hot, and nicely plated.

    We really enjoyed our visit. The German food was delicious and the portions huge. We didn't like that we had a reservation and were sat by the kitchen. We will clarify that next time. But definitely glad they re-opened. Sorry they deleted the fried chicken, fried biscuits with apple butter and tall cozy booths.

    The Sherman has great German food and very well priced for the service and quality that comes out of the kitchen. The beer garden out back is a great addition for music! Now only if I didn't have to drive an hour to go there...

    We haven't been to The Sherman House since it was renovated and now called The Sherman,, while in town visiting, we finally took the opportunity to check it out and try it. Would recommend to anyone visiting, driving through, or residents.

    Arrived and seated promptly. Downhill from there. Server was very new (1st day?). She was pleasant but very soft spoken and obviously did not know the menu. The bar got both drinks ordered wrong. No bread was available on the first two occasions we asked, but then magically appeared. Two meat dishes (filet and short ribs) were extremely salty. the sauerbraten was very dry with no gravy or sauce on the plate, but the server was able to obtain some. I could go on and on, but will only comment , if there intent is to resurrect a fine old name in dining, the owners/managers need to do some hands on training of the entire staff. We will not return.

    I had dined at The Sherman (formerly The Sherman House) before and after the new ownership and renovation. The Sherman’s makeover is a huge success. They honored the restaurant/hotel history through photos and hand carved German wood trims but completely renovated flooring, walls, lighting...everything. Our dining experience for dinner a few months ago was superb both food and service. Brunch on Father’s Day was also great. Omlettes were loaded and seasoned well. French toast unfortunately wasn’t anything special. Service was very friendly and warm.

    If you go to the Sherman House, bring a strong magnet and a phone camera. The magnet is to find any metal slivers before they end up in your mouth, like the 1 inch one my wife found while chewing on her beef stroganoff. The manager thought that it might have come from a scouring pad. He apologized and asked if we would like another serving - are you kidding me, from the same pot of stroganoff that the first sliver was cooked in. So, he took that meal off the check and gave us a gift card for a future date. The phone camera is so that you can take a picture of the menu and compare it to your bill. Our friend also had the stroganoff, for which the menu price was $16, but when the bill came the price had risen to $18. Also, they charged us $3 for Bier Cheese for some pretzel appetizers when we only requested and received mustard. We did have good service and the wurst sausages were good; the beef stoganoff had 4 little cubes of beef with a lot of noodles. The metal sliver in the food spoiled the whole evening. Lucky for this place that my wife did not swallow that metal.

    We chose The Sherman for our 38th wedding anniversary. We were curious to see the restaurant after its recent renovation and menu change. We were pleased to still see many German dishes. The food was very good and reasonably priced. The service was excellent. We're glad we went.

    My family and I have been meeting at the Sherman (House) for over 50 years, we have loved the old fashioned Inn. This last Wednesday, we were so disappointed, the food was not enjoyable, the staff very unfriendly. The menu has changed. The Manager (I think it was the Manager ) was just plain rude from the time of arrival to the time of departure. The dining room was not busy.

    Each of three diners ordered unique items and everyone was quite satisfied. The salmon was especially noteworthy and the roasted Brussel spouts were tasty. The orange crème brulee' was superb! The "by the glass" wine selections need expansion, however, to offer a few higher end options.

    This place is recently completely revamped. It's beautiful and amazing. We saw Hippie Fingers there this past weekend and it was incredible! This is a must! The food is excellent and so is the service.

    Excellent specials for the day and service was attentive, but unobtrusive. Portions were generous and unfortunately, we had to omit the desserts. I wish there was sweet tea as a drink option, since putting a sweetener or a couple of packets of sugar into a glass just isn't the same! Will definitely return.

    Our server was very inexperienced and had no one helping him. He struggled through our Easter meal and just about everything was done wrong. Missing food, no refills. On and on and on until it just became a joke. The food was decent but way, way overpriced. Not worth a visit back.

    I was unsuccessful at using the edit feature on the app to add one more person to my reservation causing a slight adjustment when we arrived. The beverage server never returned to refill waters or iced tea. We went without. Also, the "special" was offered, but the cost was not known until the bill was handed out. Surprise, the one meat option was twice the price of the other. It would have been good to know the difference in cost. Overall, the service did not match the reputation, and therefore the value for the high cost was lacking.

    Had a great dinner at The Sherman. It was a bad weather night so the crowd was not huge, but wait staff was very attentive and helpful and the food was outstanding. Within our group we ordered a wide variety dinners and all of them looked to be very good. My steak was perfect. Will recommend to friends.

    Nice setting in an historic hotel. Had been here for lunch a month earlier. An adequate wine list, but not exceptional. Our 1st red wine choice on the list was unavailable. Four of us in our party. As we were driving back to Indianapolis and to Cincinnati, we did not order anything else from the bar. My sauerbraten entre was very good. My guest's beef stroganoff was boring and somewhat tasteless. Our waiter/server was a bit too attentive as he returned to the table far too often (4 times) first to try to take our orders even before we had time to look at the menus, then to try to clear dishes when we were obviously not finished. We felt as though they were trying to quickly turn the tables though it was still before 8:30p and the room was less than half full.

    My husband I stayed at The Sherman for his business trip. The hotel was wonderful! Updated large rooms, comfortable beds, beautifully updated but stayed true to the original history. We ate dinner at the restaurant in the hotel. We loved it so much, we ate lunch there the next day too! Wonderful staff, service, food, and enjoyable environment. I would suggest it to anyone!

    My husband and I came to Batesville, to dine at another establishment - however, we did not have reservations and was turned away. We decided to try the Sherman House and was pleasantly surprised. I am not much for German food, but they had a nice, overall variety. I had the salmon and my husband, the beef stroganoff - both were tasty and well presented. Don't miss out on the cheesecake - large enough to share and good enough to come back for more.
