Breakfast
Leaside was the neighbourhood with everything a young family could need -- except bacon and eggs. Native to the area, Hayley and Robbie know it’s the natural setting to raise their daughter, Sophie. But, before 4 o’clock, it was a challenging place to feed her. They set out to give the neighbourhood the brunchtime local Leaside (and Sophie) deserved.
Tailored to the family-oriented community, the menu honours all generations. It features the crucial classics (like the Benedict), hipster staples (like the Avocado toast), and kid-curated essentials (like pb&j pancakes). From top to bottom, the food is crafted around the intention of what can be house made, freshly squeezed, and locally sourced. Sophie’s opened in August 2018 and has had lines out the door ever since. Casual and fun, the place immediately looked like it had been on the Bayview strip all along – because it should have been.

The food was OK but nothing special. Salad from a bag is not very exciting. Chairs are metal and very uncomfortable. Nicely decorated interior.

The place is small and cute. Seating in the back of the restaurant where we were sitting was unrealistic how the chairs were soo close to the adjacent table chairs. It was very loud with both the blaring pop music playing and the other customers speaking loudly over the very loud playing music. The service staff were running around like chickens without heads. I’m not sure if our waitress didn’t write down no almonds on the chia pudding or the kitchen staff missed it. I asked them for another as my daughter can’t eat the nuts. My mother asked for jam with her toast, which didn’t arrive. The waitress has to go grab that as well. Again, not sure if this was the waitress or the kitchen’s fault. The actual food was good, however all the portions were very small, including the cappuccino’s. It was not a relaxing brunch with all the noise and running back and forth of the wait staff probably forgetting things. I may try the Queen street location in the future though, hopefully it’s better.

Service and ambience were outstanding, and the visual experience was lovely. All sweet elements were delicious, although the scone experience would be enhanced by offering clotted cream instead of whipped. We ordered a vegetarian high tea. The vegetarian savoury elements were underwhelming. Two involved basic crostini, and three more were dainty sandwiches of one plant element and various cheese crumbles on plain white bread. A bit more imagination in that part of the menu (quiches? tartlets? croquettes?) would make this high tea really outstanding, and better value for vegetarians.

The pancakes were a good portion and tasty. The savoury dishes were not the best as the rest of the group didn’t enjoy their dishes. We were also hoping for more gluten free options but those were limited

Service and atmosphere was great. Food was fine - nothing special or extraordinary. For the cost of breakfast for two, I did not think it was worth what we paid. I actually found it more expensive than other places whose food is better.

The afternoon tea has carefully selected items with good quality and decadent taste. It is an unforgettable experience and worth to try. We will come again to try the brunch menu next!

Not my cup of tea, no pun intended. I just have really high expectations for afternoon tea and can for sure see this be a great experience for most other people (don’t want to ruin it for anyone else). It was lovely experience overall and went on a recommendation from a friend, but was not impressed when I heard that the scones were outsourced from COBS (I prefer a place to do them in-house). I also prefer loose leaf tea (not tea bags that I can grab at a shop). I’m a snob, I know— just expected more for paying $79ish bucks. Great staff, lovely teaware.

We thoroughly enjoyed our high tea - plentiful pots of tea and beautifully presented sweet and savory food. The service was outstanding - friendly, attentive yet professional. We were unaware of a birthday party booked at the same time - 12 lovely and LIVELY young girls celebrating 10th birthday -so the noise/laughter was deafening at times!!
