Tortoise Supper Club
We had a great time enjoying the live jazz on Friday night! Great food, wine, and service.
Late night dinner. Wonderful ambience with corner table with booth and chair combo. Elegant. Candle. Interesting guava margarita- yummy. Had soft shell crab which was ok- expected to be better. Others had bone in filler which was good. Overall good food and consistent which is nice. If there is room for improvement it would be that the waiter was very hard to understand - but he did a good not great job overall. Still a favorite spot in Chicago. Classy and elegant and pretty reliable.
Bday for GF. Great service and good value for great food.
Wonderful evening from drinks, to food to dessert... Well definitely be back!
Great place to get a nice dinner downtown near the river.
I've been lucky enough to have been to many fine restaurants throughout the world and the food at Tortoise Club is among the very best I've ever experienced. The staff is very friendly. We were seated promptly. The service is excellent. They have a wedge salad that is probably the best I've ever had. The ribeye, frankly, may have been the best steak I have ever had in my five decades of eating steak. We were there early on a Saturday night and the dining area was busy, but creating an exciting energy. It's tough to think of anything that was less than excellent.
I have never been disappointed whenever I have dined here. Whether it's for Happy Hour or a full dining experience. The service is always warm, friendly, welcoming, and impeccable. Servers are always there when there is a need but not obtrusive and interrupting. Plates are cleared promptly, soiled silver replaced prior to next course arrival, water never below half full. On top of that the service team is very knowledgeable about the menu and beverage items able to answer any and all questions a guest may have about ingredients and preparations. Service assistants are always present and taking care of the table maintenance effortlessly, gliding in and out being careful not to interrupt conversations.
The food is outstanding and portions generous. Hot food is always served hot, cold food served cold, and you never have to ask where your next course is. Courses are timed perfectly and orders expedited quickly so you never feel like you are waiting forever for your food. Cocktails are also excellent (I recommend the Old Fashioned) and wine list is great and never overwhelming.
Highly highly recommend. This is someplace I always send people who ask me where to go when in town and somewhere I always bring my out of town guests.
Last weekend my husband and I visited Chicago to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary and had the pleasure to dine at the Tortoise Supper club in celebration. I had read such good reviews and looked forward to a memorable evening. From the atmosphere, the staff, the service, the food and wine, everything made for a lovely delightful evening. The owner escorted us to our table along with an anniversary card and we were then greeted with complimentary glasses of champaign. We started with the Ahi Tuna poke which was a truly great beginning to a fantastic dining evening. My husband had the New York strip steak, which he pronounced was juicy & cooked perfectly, and I enjoyed the lovely Cod entrée, which was quite delectable. Sipping the remainder of our bottle of pinot noir, we could not pass up sharing the melt in your mouth cherry pie, and the ever so delightful tortoise pie, which was served and sung with a happy anniversary rendition by our waiter Chad. He was the ultimate perfect waiter, explaining in detail the many menu entrees, drinks, & desserts. He was quite attentive and the service he provided was top notch. This was our first visit to the Tortoise, and we would definitely recommend this place to our friends, and look forward to another visit and great meal on our next trip to Chicago
Excellent all around! We had a terrific server, and the ambience was just right. Loved the relish tray!
Really wonderful Mother’s Day brunch buffet!
Wonderful brunch for Mother’s Day!
We went for the Mother’s Day brunch. The food was really good and so was the service. I would have given 5 stars but for one thing- my son can’t have gluten, so the pastry chef told us we could ask our server bring him ice cream since all desserts had gluten. The server brought him a scoop readily enough. I looked at the bill at the end of the meal (appx. $500 for 6 people) and noticed they charged me $2.50 for him to have a small scoop of ice cream for dessert. It left a sour ending to an otherwise great meal.
We had a wonderful experience here on Saturday night. The food, the service, the ambiance, all impeccable. The staff was so wonderful, so nice and helpful. The food was phenomenal. The branzino is absolutely to die for! I can't wait to go back again!
Had an excellent dinner at the Tortoise Supper Club. Our server, Chimmy, was both knowledgeable and congenial. Each of us enjoyed the Shrimp Scampi Dip appetizer as well as the Octopus appetizers. The Saturday Night Special Prime Rib was delicious. My dining companions both enjoyed their respective meals, a New York Strip steak grilled to perfection, and the Chef's Special Halibut. Don't forget to order dessert. The Cherry Pie is a standout along with the Peanut Butter Pie. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire experience here and will be returning sometime soon to try out some of the other items on the menu!
Tortoise is my favorite place to dine in the city of Chicago. The Staff is great and the food is so delicious, it's definitely a must visit.
We enjoyed our dinner very much. The steak (a fillet) was excellent and had a wonderful creative cherry chipotle sauce served atop. I would not normally order sauce on a good quality steak, but this was so perfect with the steak! Not overwhelming, but complimentary. The veggies we had were excellent - carrots and asparagus and our mac and cheese was good as well. What we noticed was how perfectly everything tasted together. Our cocktails were very good. The service was attentive and friendly. We did order dessert which we were not impressed with. The ambiance of the restaurant was nicely old school and you could hear live jazz music coming from the lounge area of the restaurant. We would have loved to stay for more music and drinks in the lounge, but we were exhausted after a day of sightseeing. Overall, we would recommend this restaurant.
Chicago's version of a Wisconsin Supper Club, broad menu choices, something for everyone. Food and service both great!
This was the second business dinner we hosted at the Tortoise Supper Club, and attendees of both raved about the amazing food and excellent service. The owner greeted us at the door and our server shared the unique history of the restaurant, which is always interesting to me. I will definitely be back soon!
We had dinner at the Tortoise for a special occasion. The place is beautiful, withtasteful and elegant decor. Service was good, with an attentive server who almost tried too hard. Food was overpriced and forgettable, so we won’t be back for dinner. It’s. Good place for a cocktail— they have a bar at the front with lots of tables.
Excellent meal and service in what has always been a cozy warm environment.
Disappointed they ran out of the Chilean sea bass by 7pm and why did they take the Steak tartar
off the menu.
Good food. But way too pompous and trying to hard to upsell. I actually apologized to my guest for how over-the-top the service was.
Phenomenal ambiance, food and service. Exquisite!
The bronzini was delicious but the prime rib and duck were not good at all and were very expensive. The noise level was high. There was a large table of people next to us who were at an event who were giving speeches and clapping throughout our dinner. The restaurant should put groups like this in their own area.
The Tortoise Supper Club is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. The food and service are always great. The atmosphere that old Chicago feel - cozy, warm, friendly and just plain cool! We’ve celebrated birthdays, holidays and awesome date nights at TTSC and will continue to do so for years to come!
I really enjoyed dinner at Tortoise! The service was amazing and the food was delicious. We sat in the Red Room which was pretty nice. Overall it was laid back and an enjoyable experience. They have amazing homemade ice cream (which I definitely need to pick up some for home). They do have valet parking which was convenient considering the location. We were celebrating my fiancé’s birthday and I will definitely be back again!
You all know this feeling...you walk into a restaurant/ bar and you feel an instant emotional connection. This was the case for us last night here in Chicago at the Tortoise Supper Club. The authenticity that owners Keene and Megan Addington have brought to this space is evident in every detail. Family owned (a rare find), the vibe is warm and sexy and welcoming. In the foyer you will find the mahogany wood from the original Pump Room, two ballot boxes that were used for Chicago mayoral elections from the 1920s through the 1950s, and Raoul Varin Prints offering a bird’s-eye view of Chicago landscape during the 1880s. You will also find an 1880s pencil sketch of Andrew McNally. McNally was a great Chicagoan, and one of the founders of the Rand McNally Atlas company (he famously had the presence of mind to bury his printing presses in the sand during the Great Chicago Fire which enabled him to lead the communication efforts during post-fire reconstruction and be back in business one day after the fire). I could go on and on about the vibe...now to the food. No words. Yes, we enjoyed roasted bone marrow with a bacon marmalade, herb salad, and toasted sourdough (😲). For me I had the Chilean Sea Bass with Sautéed Watercress and Ginger, Coconut Rice, Shrimp Ragout paired with two generous pours of Pouilly-Fuissé (one of my favs). For dessert...the Tortoise pie (🤭) Yes, we went there! All offerings on the Tortoise Supper Club menu (including the desserts) are prepared on premise from scratch. As for the service...we have been in fine restaurants around the world and have never had a waiter like Chad. The consummate professional, Chad knew the offerings in such detail that by the time he was finished we wanted one of everything. I must not forget the female waitstaff at Tortoise and their old-Hollywood vibe (red lips, pearls, and smiles for days). Stunning! They have gotten this one right for sure. If your travels take you to the windy-city, Tortoise is a MUST!
Choose the Tortoise Supper Club for a business dinner.
I originally chose for location near clients hotel, and reviews.
The service was outstanding, Matt our waiter was awesome with his suggestions, and with the right amount of service for our meeting.
Food was outstanding, the aged steaks and sea bass were so good, the client emailed commenting on the delious food.
I'll be back!
The Tortise Supper Club is a favorite for special occasions. Recently had dinner in the Red Room for our Annirversary. The ambiance from the intimate setting to the candle on the table was perfect. The salmon and duck were cooked to perfection and came to the table piping hot. What made the evening was Chimey, our waiter. To cap off the evening he seranaded us while he delivered our dessert.
great atmosphere. great wait staff. If you like the old supper club feeling this place is great. After dinner we went over to the bar and listened to the Jazz band.
Only complaint is the drink prices but that is normal with downtown places.
Great food and atmosphere for a dinner for two or group of friends. The service was outstanding and we never felt rushed to "turn over the table", even though it was a busy Saturday night. This is a true Chicago restaurant that never felt kitschy...just cool. After dinner, we headed to the bar and soaked up the live jazz. A great place!
Great menu with lots of options. OUTSTANDING Old Fashion. My wife loved her sea bass. I was very impressed with the stuffed walleye. Cherry pie should not be missed.
Excellent service and ambiance. A true supper club; I understand the hotel concierge who called it a Chicago institution.
Dinner at the Tortoise Supper Club harkens back to the days of a 1940's restaurant with wood and leather, and low ambient lighting. We originally came for the Saturday Nght Prime Rib Special, but were so tempted by their other great menu choices, so we decided on the Pan Seared Scallops with Butternut Squash Risotto and the 8oz Fillet with Cherry- Chipotle Gastrique and Vesuvio Potatoes. Both were outstanding!! We started the dinner out with the seasonal soup, Asparagus and Mushroom soup which was delightfully unexpected and very flavorful. The meal was well-timed and friendly service. A fantastic and refreshing dining experience overall.
Went for my birthday they were very attentive to the details and made the night a true celebration! Great food and experience all around!
Absolutely loved this place. Saw good reviews from others and it did not disappoint. Our server, Aaron, was very knowledgeable about the menu and especially the cocktails - he even helped us order a couple off-menu cocktails based on our tastes! There was also champagne and a card on our table when we got there for our anniversary, which was very thoughtful. We went early (5:45) on a Saturday and it was quiet enough to easily have a conversation. I definitely plan to go back!
Only one word... phenomenal!
Love the jazz and atmosphere - service was very attentive and the food was excellent
The Tortoise Supper Club is perfect! The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable. My guests were all able to select something appealing from the extensive menu. Best, everyone was extremely pleased with their choice. Also, the cocktails and deserts amazed. Anytime I want to impress my guests, this is where I will be returning to.
We were there before a show. Our server was wonderful pointing out what to order so we could be on time.
This was our 2nd annual Easter Brunch at the Tortoise Supper Club and we have decided to make it a tradition as long as the restaurant is in business.
To start with, the raw bar is a wonderful treat. Sushimi, oysters on the half shell and shrimp or smoked salmon in abundance.
A creative fresh soup and a variety of organic products woven into crisp salads is next.
There is a "build your own Belgian waffle" station with a variety of toppings to please every palette.
Chef was carving baked salmon or ham on the bone and to accompany them you could choose from a variety of hot sides ir or breakfast items.
But wait, don't forget the dessert bar with freshly baked cookies, pies and cakes alongside fresh cut fruits and berries with whipped heavy cream.
Add to that a full bar, curated wine list and expresso options and you'll be in heaven with a meal here.
They also have jazz on weekends and seasonal al fresco seating.
