    Food is incredible, customer service experience was subpar. We made our reservation two weeks ago and couldn’t wait to visit Ulu! This place was highly recommended and we decided to make this our “nicer” dinner while on our honeymoon. We booked this reservation as some as the slot became available, as you can only book two weeks out. We were five minutes late and we called to let the hostess know and she was very kind and said it wasn’t a problem. Kona traffic is a little tricky and we aren’t from here so we underestimated the travel time. Even with being late, the hostess greeted us and immediately took us the the table. The gentleman who filled our waters and brought us bread (which was delicious) was incredibly friendly. The night took a turn when we were introduced to our server. Doug was less than enthusiastic. We started out with drinks and sashimi. The sashimi was INCREDIBLE. HOWEVER, it took an hour for us to get food. After Doug took our order, he didn’t come back. He checked on all the tables around us and didn’t stop at ours. For 45 minutes we just sat and watched other tables get food and enjoy their dinner. Finally Doug came back and said the “sushi was running behind” and he would “get us edamame”. 20 minutes later we still had nothing on our table. Finally the sashimi and edamame arrived together. Again, the food was INCREDIBLE. This low reviews isn’t due to the food. We put “special occasion” on our reservation and this was anything but that. We wanted to order more food but decided to just get our check because we didn’t want to wait 45 more minutes.

    The service was shockingly slow. Once we turned down the dessert soufflé, which they asked about when we ordered drinks, the server wanted nothing to do with our table. Lemonade had a bar charge of $10, which we were not told about. The puli chicken was bland chicken smeared in terrible sauce. The single crab leg appetizer was similarly doused in sauce at a whopping $70. It was an extremely disappointing experience that will not be repeated.

    We celebrated an anniversary at ‘ULU Ocean Grill. Such a great restaurant experience. From the location, to the staff, to the sunset, to the amazing food. We enjoyed every minute. Our server was our guide as we enjoyed a selection of sashimi and sushi. He did a great job of pairing our sake with our dishes. I want to thank the team at ‘ULU and the Four Seasons. You made our anniversary a special one.

    We had an amazing experience tonight at Ulu! The outdoor table had a spectacular view of the sunset as we listened to the crashing waves of the surf. The Catch of the Day was fresh and succulent, and the poke was to die for! We began with the toro nigiri that was buttery and delicious. However, the secret ingredient that took us from an excellent meal to unforgettable experience was Tic, our server! Wow, did she ever make our evening special. She was knowledgeable about all things cuisine and all things Big Island. We would return simply to sit in her section! Well done, Ulu!

    We decided to have celebrate our anniversary dinner at Ulu and sadly we were pretty disappointed. There was many issues throughout the night that didn’t really make us feel special at all. Our food came out incorrect, our beverage was removed from the table before we were finished and we asked for a drink menu and it was brought at the end of the meal along with asking to refill our waters. It was a strange experience and we did expect way more.

    Seated right at 7pm, but waited quite a while for our server to show up. We waited at least 20 minutes before water was offered, or an initial contact. Server seemed rushed and although not rude, seemed very preoccupied and not personable. Definitely not something I would expect from a restaurant within a Four Seasons property.

    The service was impeccable! Everyone was very attentive. The food was adequate. Considering the other reviews, I expected to have the best meal of the year but it was subpar. We had the pork belly bao and it was lackluster. For the main course we had the ahi tuna sushi and it was comparable to sushi on the mainland. The wagu nigiri was the best bite of the night. We also had the nigiri with 5 types of fish. It was not worth it. I do not recommend. For the money, there are better places to eat.

    My husband and I chose Ulu for our 30th anniversary dinner. We had a 6:30 PM reservation and were seated right away by the hostess, who also wished us a happy anniversary (I had indicated in the OpenTable comments that we were celebrating our anniversary). We were also asked about any dietary restrictions (gluten & dairy for me). Our server was very kind and knowledgeable about the menu and which items would be compliant for my dietary restrictions. My husband and I opted to share the tomato and charred avocado salad (very light and tasty, but literally one chopped tomato and 1/2 of a small avocado and some dressing…). For entrees, my husband chose the smoked chicken dish, which our server highly recommended, and I opted for the fresh catch of the day with grilled lemon, minus the yuzu butter, which she also raved about. Both dishes were very appealing. We shared one flourless chocolate cake dessert that was also very good. We each had one pre-dinner cocktail, and one glass of wine with dinner (red for him, sparkling for me…our server asked if I was thinking about the Dom Perignon for $90 per glass, but I opted for the Prosecco instead, which was delicious!). While the service, our meal, and the beachfront ambience were all very pleasing, our total bill, pre-tip, was a little over $300 (for 2 cocktails, 1 small salad, 2 entrees, 1 dessert & 2 glasses of wine). I guess this is to be expected at a Four Seasons property, but we felt that it was quite overpriced for what we ordered. It’s definitely a beautiful special occasion restaurant, but be prepared for the steep prices if you go.

    Fine dining anywhere is a treat but when set against the sunset on a patio overlooking the pacific and Hawaii coast it is a true “dining experience”. In this age of staffing challenges and reconstituting customer service Ulu has not wavered from 5 star service and quality. As always at top tier resorts and restaurants be prepared for hefty prices but the value is absolutely there for the quality of the staff, the kitchen, the bar, and the menu. We had the fresh catch crispy fish (3 pound fish) for four people and it was amazing. Add some Sushi, oysters, fresh vegetables and amazing craft drinks and it is a true evening, not just a meal. We celebrated a birthday there and I can’t think of a better ambience or experience to do it. Will come back.

    Ulu never fails to impress! We look forward to going back any time we’re on the Big Island for the incredible service, food and atmosphere. Beach side dining at its finest! We had a lovely knowledgeable server. The table side ahi poke with tarp chips is a fantastic appetizer. The fresh grill was excellent. Had the opaka paka (Hawaiian snapper) and mahi mahi. Thai Pineapple rice was a great side. French press coffee and an upscale shave ice dessert finished the night. Always perfect timing with food and service and little touches add on to make it a special meal.

    Excellent restaurant ... expensive but the food is 10++. Fit for foodies. Ahi Tuna was as good as you can get anywhere! Impressive menu, sophisticated wine selection. Overall .. impressive! Receptionist is pedantic and pretentious ... we were staying at the resort and due to jet lag wanted to move from a 8 o'clock to 6 o'clock slot...restaurant was 45% empty but she punished us by making us sit in the "white tile area" while we watched dozens of 6x better tables go unused. If I were resort management I would fix this problem immediately..not the way to treat guests who want drop $600 for a dinner for two.

    Stunning in every way - the food was delicious and interesting, views next to the ocean and at sunset and then the service. I was not staying at the Four Seasons but often make it a point to eat there. It did not disappoint! I can’t wait to go back on another trip to Kona.

    The atmosphere is stunning, but you’re definitely paying for the view (which occasionally includes young children running back and forth screaming) and not for the quality of food. We ordered the spicy crab noodles for the table and I got a piece of shell in every bite. For entrees we got the abalone with corn chowder, Kona coffee rubbed venison, coriander crusted ahi, and calamari. The abalone was thinly sliced and over cooked which made it rubbery. The venison was cooked to a medium well, which is not how I prefer any red meat. The ahi rub was a mouth punch of mouth numbing coriander and no other spice. The calamari was overly salty but the best thing we had. The drinks are very strong and very pretty, and the desserts were delicious.

    The venue is spectacular - right on the beach. And the service was also great - very friendly and attentive. But the food, my goodness…. The steak was decent. But everything else was so far below expectations that it boggles the mind. I ended up not eating two thirds of what they brought. They graciously took it off the bill. But their sushi chef should be sent back to school.

    Went here for my 38th birthday—they did the best job of making it a special night for me—gave me a choice between two beautiful tables (went with patio despite it being windier), service was excellent, they graciously took birthday pictures at sunset, and the food was divine. Highly recommend!!

    The restaurant ambiance was romantic and perfect for a date night or with a group. The staff were friendly and attentive. Food presentation and taste was perfect for our preferences. The complimentary dessert for our anniversary was icing on the cake to end our delicious meal. The only thing was there quite a few insects due to outdoor seating (and to be expected since it IS an island and we dined at night). We would definitely dine there again!

    We celebrated my parents 25th anniversary and the service was excellent our server Taylar was so kind. The food was superb. I would definitely recommend the spicy crab noodles. It’s a great place if you want quiet, a great view, and wonderful food.

    Best food we’ve had on the island. The abalone was spectacular, the pork belly bao had such an amazing flavor, and this is the perfect place for a nice dinner. Definitely pricey, but you really get what you pay for: an unforgettable dinner.
