Umaya elevates the typical 'beer garden' concept with hard-to-find Asian dishes. Our menu promotes friends, coworkers, family to enjoy their time together. We carry a wide array of Asian beer & Japanese Whiskey, complimenting the tranquility of the restaurant. The menu will feature seasonal highlights; however, the time-honored staples will always be available. ‘Umaya’ directly translates to a ‘place that tastes good’ in Japanese; it is a place where you can go

Our family is from NYC and this place was not up to our standard. The place is loud from music and from people talking. It has bright spotlights in your face if you eat in the center of the restaurant (where they turn it as dance floor later in the night). The service was slow and the sushi are smaller than what we get in NYC places. The price were more expensive that our usual casual spot in NYC too. We will not go back to this Japanese place.
Great Place, good food. Thanks to inflation prices are higher
Long waits until our food was there. It took about 25 min to get our orders in and another half an hour to get 2 apps. 40 min from that point to get our main dish…. Food was good but the place is understaffed.
Authentic Japanese food. Yokitori and Sasumi are very fresh and well prepared.
My food didn’t come out until after my date finished eating and the check took forever too.
The signature drinks were ok, not very strong. But the food was great. We got a bunch of sushi rolls and each one was delicious.
Perfect, just perfect. As always. My server was Alex and he suggested a new dish, Fish and Chips with their Japanese twist. Let me tell you, perfectly battered/deep fried fish with cole slaw and those seaweed chips are just freaking tasty. The lamb chops were cooked to perfection and that mango sauce just perfected it. Some new Mezcal cocktails were tried and they were delicious and full of flavor. Alex did an amazing job with his suggestions and level of service. Just love this spot. Will be back soon.
Very delicious meals - try the Veggie Ramen and Beef & Fish skewers.
The food was good and ambiance somewhat noisy
I loved this experience! My family has some picky eaters but everyone got to eat things they loved!
Great service and server with great sushi!
The food was good. Service was alright.
We were the only people at Umaya on a Sunday morning. They sell a Chesapeake roll here that is just god-awful. Otherwise, the food was generally fine. This thing was just so foul that it is impossible to give a good review. Do not order this unless you want oceany-smelling, thick-paste crab taste with no soft-shell crab in it (despite it being offered as a soft-shell crab roll). Miso soup was great. Other sushi pieces were good but very small. They must do a great non-Covid, office-lunch business, but this place is just not good.
Food was great, as was our server but the pace of the food from the kitchen was off. Nothing for 45 minutes and then everything came at once. Robatayaki was tasty and the fish for the sushi was great. Will have to try the omakase next time. The ambience was ok, a little a sports bar and very loud.
Good food, but slow service. Make reservation in advance.
Great as always. Terrific staff and chef.
Corn on the cob was among the best I’ve ever had.
Pleasantly surprised how good the sushi was. Ordered uni to begin with and was very fresh.
Amazing experience. Missed this place
Highly recommend the autumn roll! Absolutely delicious.
Awesome dining experience, great food and service, nice ambience.
Loved the new items they offered as well as some new local beers. Great service and the food was incredible.
Best sushi/sashimi in DC! I cannot wait to go back!
Excellent experience, we experimented across the menu from appetizers, large plates, yakisoba, and sushi. All items were quite good. Service was cheerful and accommodating. Already recommended it to several people at work.
Good, thick, fresh sashimi and rolls but my favorites were the skewers. Spouse had bao buns and wings. Something for everyone, all tasty.
Can’t wait for real menus to come back. Hate the QR codes.
Very great food. I enjoyed every bite. The atmosphere was amazing.
Great food, but small servings for the price. Service was ok
Hubby wanted sushi for his birthday, so I decided on Umaya which was a new restaurant experience for both of us. From the time we walked in until the time we walked out, Umaya was very impressive. The service was excellent as well as the food. We had loads of sushi and their teriyaki chicken wings. We will definitely return to try other items on the menu. Umaya has made our favorite places to dine in D.C. list!
Awesome spot for some great food! My friend and I ate family-style, so we split everything we ordered. For $50 each, we got tons of food and it was excellent in value and taste. Would definitely come back!
We had walked by several times and it was time to visit. The restaurant is not that old, and yet the interior felt tired. Boxes stacked in corners. The host was also disorganized---and abrupt. The server was cheerful. The food average. Scallops on a skewer were far too salty. The Japanese fried chicken looked grey in color. Seaweed salad was very good.
Great food and service.
The quality of food here is really good! Unfortunately, the service doesn’t live up. When my family got there, we had to wait 15-20 min before we were able to place our first appetizer. Normal standards of servers checking on the table were non existent. Every time we wanted to place an order we had to assertively wave down an employee. Most of them were behind the bar on their phones or messing around. Super unprofessional. This spot is more of a “hang out” spot over a nice dinner. And clearly this place is an Americanized version of a Japanese place because true Japanese restaurant servers are attentive, engaged, and professional. Food gets a thumbs up, everything else, thumbs down.
Horrible. Server practically forgot about us. Didn’t have utensils to eat with. No straws for drinks. Had to flag server down several times just to take our order
its okay nothing special. not true Japanese food they offer Poke which is not Japanese. It could be better
We come here every year since it opened during an annual convention, and the food is consistently excellent. A fun experience!
Food was good however service is slow.
