You're joking, right? I got to the restaurant on time for my reservation and the valet from the place next door tells me that Verlaine is closed, permanently. Even if a restaurant is going out of business, I'd expect a call advising me of such and suggesting a make a reservation elsewhere. It's no wonder they had to fold. this is most likely a direct reflection on how they operated their restaurant when it was open!

Diego Hernandez is one of the most important chefs in the Western Hemisphere. After opening Corazon de Tierra in Baja California, Verlaine is his first restaurant in the United States. The food is all organic and locally grown. The refried beans are amazing accompanied by homemade flour tortillas. The half chicken is a feast and the catcus salad and ceviche we ordered were all really great. We had the old fashioned (with brandy) which was a yummy cocktail but on the night we went it was rainy and we sat in the front room where there was a birthday and it was super noisy. Looking forward to going again and sitting in the back patio area where its quieter and more romantic.

Food was tasty but expensive. For this amount of money I'll go to Craig's or Dan Tana's or Wally's. Place was almost empty which is very depressing. My wife asked if they could make her a 'strawberry margarita', and they charged an 'extra' 9 dollars for that. 9 dollars to chop up a strawberry. Not cool. And Valet parking was 10 dollars. 10 dollars for a place that is almost empty. 37 dollars for short ribs is not cheap. I know it costs more at some restaurants but there is usually more to it, more atmosphere, a more exciting bar, a more attractive surrounding. Drop the prices, expand the menu and you might have a chance to survive. The refried beans are very good as recommended by Jonathan Gold and that's why we went, but won't go back just for that.

Verlaine has a cool vibe and great food. This is Mexican food with a unique perspective. Delicious, interesting sauces. Unique takes on dishes that you might not otherwise consider. I recommend the black beans, with the cheese and spices they add that make it really delicious.

I heard about the restaurant from Good Food on KCRW (Gold's recommendation) and wanted to take my husband here for a special date. We tried the roasted carrots, cactus salad, fish tostada, sorrel tamale (my favorite part of the meal), and roasted chicken. The drinks were good, but the food was definitely the biggest attraction. Prices are high but it was worth it for a special occasion.

It was so cold outside that it was hard to enjoy the meal as everything turned cold within a minute of being put down on the table . The fact that they do not have enough heaters and expect you to eat outside is not bearable. They should give blankets if they won’t let you go inside until 9 pm . Our reservation was at 6:4(. The waitress were wearing wool coats. The weather and being cold was such a distraction couldn’t enjoy a thing ! Should have left .

Very inexperienced service. Cocktails arrived after having been shaken too long and/or sitting too long. We shared a lot of dishes and EVERY SINGLE TIME a dish was served we had to ask for a spoon. Lovely creative food, but an experience marred by the service. Beans were really overpriced (sorry, Jonathan Gold) Too many other good places to go with good service AND food. Probably won't be back.

First time here. Ordered too much food but OK as we had some to take home. The salad and carrots were excellent. I had the beans and they are like a think black bean soup - too many for one person (spouse does not like) but I had some for next day. Ordered pork chop and half chicken. Both are very good. I like the chicken but the sides (except carrots) were not to my taste. Could have shared an entrée. Will return.

The food was tasty - I would recommend the half chicken - but I agree with a lot of the reviews: the menu is way too limited. We were waited on by three different servers which didn't overly bother us but was a little strange, especially as they all dressed like they were about to head next door to the Peppermint Club. The ambience was sterile and soul-less but I don't think the garden furniture in winter helped the mood. With a new, wider menu and a cosier feel, this place could be great - it just isn't at the moment.

I was very underwhelmed with the food - we tried several dishes and each dish was unappealing - the Chef may think he is being progressive or innovative with his menu though it was not innovative nor had any taste whether the dish was hot or cold. Further, the Golden Boy cocktail at $16.00 completed the disappointment with Verlaine. It was clear the bartender had no sense of mixology - there are two factors to mixology - science and love - the drink had neither.

If you’re expecting typical American influenced Mexican food, then you might be disappointed. But if you want fresh, farm to table, home-like Mexican food, you’ll likely love this place. I thought the flavors were wonderful and embrace the departure from typical Mexican fare such as burritos and taquitos. The fish taco was a fresh and deliciously orchestrated combo of flavor. Beets were deeply flavored and addictive. As were the carrots and black beans. I defintely want to return to try more of the menu.

Shockingly bad. There are basically 20 things on the entire menu and all of them are over priced. The four things we ordered - a salad, tacos, chicken and fish, were mediocre at best. We also each had a glass of wine. Our bill was $175 with tax and tip - rip offs are us. I would never go back or recommend. Very disappointed.

Really good setting for mostly covered but open-air brunch (better than for dinner after dark). Restaurant's version of Eggs Benedict with chorizo rather than Canadian bacon was tasty, but "sope" (bread under egg) was so hard I could have used a jackhammer instead of a knife. Chilaquile OK. We know Diego's cuisine from Corazon de Tierra in the Guadalupe Valley in northern Baja, and he can do better. Service attentive and friendly but food delivery a bit slow. Server gave us a free glass of sparkling rose mistakenly poured by bartender--nice.

The restaurant space was open air and very European feeling. The service was very good. We were there on a Sunday evening and it was quiet. I thought it would be more popular considering the location and the rating. I was not as impressed as I thought I would be. They are trying to impress with the menu, but the Latin food vibe gets lost in the process.

Verlaine is in an outdoor courtyard which provides an airy feel. But the noise level is high, as the patrons are pretty loud and the tables are fairly close together. We sat at a two-top and couldn't help overhearing our neighbors' date conversation. The lighting is very low. It's very hard to read the menu (even for someone with good vision) because it's so dark and the print-size is tiny. The cocktails are small. We ordered Grey Goose martinis, which came out in half-full martini glasses. Not a value for $15 apiece. We enjoyed the food, but be forewarned, it's on the spicy side (as in HOT peppers). We ordered the fish ceviche, after having been steered away from the scallop aguachile by our server. It was delicious, but our mouths were on fire for a while after that. We also had the tostada, which was tasty, with some mouth-soothing mayo on it. For one of our entrees, we got the smoked chicken enchilada, which is fairly small. It was also tasty, but didn't seem worth the price. The other entree was the pork chop, which is one of the more expensive dishes on the menu. It was delicious and very large (great for sharing). But once we got closer to the middle of the chop, we were concerned that it was undercooked. It was REALLY hard to tell in the light of the candle, but the meat in the middle looked somewhat raw. The server brought the remainder back to the kitchen for a re-fire, and we were happier with the more-cooked meat. In summary, we liked the Verlaine for its style and the attentiveness of the various staff members. The food was tasty, with many flavors of Mexico, but it bordered on being too hot for American palates. The pricing was high, perhaps a bit too high for what you get. And the lighting was way too dark for my tastes (I usually take photos of my food, but I didn't want the flash going off for every shot).

I'm in love!!! I came to Verlaine to see the wonderful things that Chef Diego Hernandez has been doing in LA. I was curious to see how he translated the delectable dishes he serves at Corazon de Tierra in Valle de Guadalupe. Well, I must say that he did not disappoint! Upon walking into Verlaine, I knew we were in for a great night. The art-deco decor and dimly-lit patio dining welcomed us in. The staff is professional, friendly and unpretentious. Jaime, our server, is not only a dead ringer for Dakota Johnson, but so down-to-earth and professional. The bus-people are very cordial and efficient. Cocktails are generously-sized, giving you a great value, unparalleled in an LA chic venue such as this. All dishes were carefully crafted and transported me back to the beautiful wine country in Mexico where I first tasted Chef Diego's dishes. Let me make it a point to talk about the smoked half-chicken dish. Whoa!! I've never had chicken this scrumptious in my life! Crisp and perfectly skin covered the most juiciest and tender meat ever. Oh, and the portion was enough for two of us to share and still have left-overs! Chef Diego brought the perfect amount of Mexican warmth and generosity to a usually "sceney", too school for school (or to even eat) mentality of LA. One more thing, I was told I could personally congratulate Chef Diego. I was led to the new bar/lounge (Wild Beast) they opened on the same property. I felt like I walked into screenplay writer's living room on the eve of prohibition. Just the right mix of booze, interior design and masculinity, with a hint of starlet in the air. I was welcomed right away by the lively and kind bar manager who called out for Chef Diego to greet us. The perfect ending to our nearly three-hour dinner was to thank and congratulate this man and his staff for a job well done. Keep it up, y'all and bravo for bringing some authenticity and downright kindness to LA all while keeping things elegant.

Service is a little slow and not up to par with the food. Hope they restaff with some more experienced and well-versed staff so this place can shine. Lovely atmosphere.

The service was horrible. We were sitting there with no menus for 10 min. Drinks took 15 min after ordering to arrive. We placed our food order and got the food 1:45 min after arriving at the restaurant. They weren't even busy. This shows poor management and horrible costumer service. Cute place... that's all.
