I enjoyed an absolutely superb lunch here. The prix fixe ($20) is a great deal and the choices offered really span a wonderful range of variety and creativity in the kitchen. I thoroughly enjoyed the arancini, the carbonara... and a wonderful flourless chocolate cake for dessert. Will definitely return! AND, the service was great (thank you, Steven)
great food, awesome experience!
As in many restaurants, the acoustics upstairs are awful. We were one of only three parties and could barely hear each other. The food was very good, but we waited a long time just to get our drinks.
This is our second time here. Sam was our waiter and was attentive and helpful. Food was outstanding. Didn’t rush our meal.
Overall a positive experience. The Service was really very good, attentive, without making you feel rushed, even though it was a Friday night. Creative menu, Crispy artichoke hearts were delicious, as were the eggplant meatballs, we could have made a meal out of those. Pizza was as expected and the eggplant parmesan was a re-interpretation of standard, I would say it was less successful than the rest of the items we purchased and could have been warmer. I would go again.
Burrata with beet salad was awful, not fresh, the cook buried the yellowing arugula under the thinly sliced beet. Bolognese pasta was decent . The panna cotta was too dense and tasteless that I told the waiter to take it away and had their passable tiramisu instead. The service was attentive but the kitchen had an off day.
A very nice addition to the New Haven downtown scene. Service is attentive, food is excellent. Will definitely be back plenty more.
The decor and atmosphere was wonderful. It’s in a very cool building. The apps were great. My meal was very well done with a mix of complex flavors (beef barbacoa). My partner had lobster ravioli and said it was lacking lobster flavor and the pasta was tough. The wait staff was friendly, attentive and competent.
Outstanding restaurant for an extended dining experience. Service was excellent, food was great. A bit overpriced, but these are post-COVID days. Location to entertainment venues couldn’t be better. Highly recommend.
Outdoors, so chilly but they were most accommodating with heat lamps!
We really enjoyed Villa Lulu. I took a friend out for a birthday dinner and they started us out with two glasses of champagne, which was a nice touch. They have a great cocktail menu, and the food was delicious. I recommend the crispy artichokes and lobster ravioli. Our server was lovely as well.
Great Italian food at a reasonable price. My wife's aperol spritz was huge and the blood orange slice garnish was a nice touch. Foccaccio had great consistency and taste. Fish was well cooked and sauce was delicious. Pasta bolognese had good bite and sauce, and the chunks of ricotta were velvety. Would go again.
The food was outstanding. The service was amazing. We were visiting our son at QU and stayed in New Haven for the night. It was one of the best dinners we have had. I’m Italian and am very picky about Italian food but this was outstanding.
Food was great! Service was excellent! Love it!
excellent food (especially for a Monday night), beautiful decor, and pleasant music--jazz... new best restaurant in town.
Our meals were excellent. We ate outside and the waiter put in the heater for us. It was very comfortable. The waiter was very attentive and very personable. This was our first time there, but it won’t be our last.
My boyfriend has been looking in new haven for good pasta bolognese for a full year, and he finally found it here!
Underwhelming… food was just okay, service wasn’t good at all. We were half way through dinner before we realized our waitress wasn’t the busser. She paid more attention to setting the tables than to us. No bread, no water, barely any attention. We made reservations for our one year anniversary that we noted and it was pointless, like I said we didn’t even know her name. The food was subpar- gritty bucatini and way too doughy gnocchi but those had good flavor. The vibe was just off. For that price level we won’t be back, New Haven has a lot better places to dine.
Eggplant meatballs a must, Bronzino excellent crispy artichokes excellent rice balls excellent mantra . Definitely will be going back. Our server was excellent I believe her name was Angel. If you haven’t been try it!
My second visit to Villa Lulu. I love the vibe here and the food is delicious. Highly recommend!
The Bucatini Amatricana and Eggplant meatballs are a must! Great cocktail menu.
Excellent, delicious food. Terrific service. Lovely evening.
Horrible service. The food was fine but we spent a total of an hour and a half waiting for service and flagging down waiters who spent their time entertaining larger groups. The manager tried to make up for it by giving us free drinks but I see no reason to go back.
Went for restaurant week with my friend. It was a bit loud but so was everywhere else downtown and we fully expected it to be. The food was very good. My friend kept raving about how tender his pork chop was and it wasn't something he'd usually order. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. Will definitely return.
Was really busy because of restaurant week. Great food!
Nice environment and very good quality food. Service very good. Outdoor dining in downtown New Haven. Very good date night. Would recommend.
special thanks to the amazing staff at villa lulu!!!!!
Service and food was nothing short of amazin, the eggplant meatballs are amazing!!!!
The manager Lewis recommend a great bottle of wine cant wait to go back for more, see you soon
We had some awesome seasonal cocktails and our food and wine selection were excellent.
We will certainly be back soon!!
An Absolute hidden gem! food was delicious, although i wish we had more options other than the restaurant week. Service was attentive and polite and the manager Louis helped us select delicious glasses of wine. A must visit for italian lovers
Horrible. A definite pass.
Could be chaotic because of restaurant week. We were first told that there were no tables available to us outside although I made a reservation specifically for outdoor dining. Had to wait 10-15 mins to get seated, our main entree came out an hour and half later. Service and food were mediocre, my order was messed up a few times

Indeed it was our first restaurant week, and Villa Lulu is still finding a way to deliver on the best service to all of our guests. We will take into consideration your review and find new ways to improve, hopefully you can give us a second chance! Thank you, Management
We enjoyed dinner during restaurant week in New Haven at Cafe LuLu. The mix-and-match Prix Fixe appetizers and entrees gave us many choices. The meals were flavorful and the waitstaff attentive. The only shortcoming of note was that the polenta paired with the osso buco was lumpy. That wont keep us from a return visit.
Wasn’t aware it was Restaurant week and that there’d be a prix fixe menu. We stated, mostly because our waitperson Angel was great. Food was fine. Small issues because of new kitchen staff. We would try again.
Lovely food and service! Did not realize we’d only be able to order from a prix fix menu but was not disappointed one bit - highly recommend the meatballs and seafood fettuccine
Good Afternoon, Thank you for your kind review! We hope to see you again soon! Management
Visited for Restaurant Week. Most of the food were a bit on the bland side and the sidewalk tables were not equipped with salt or pepper, so I couldn’t adjust the salt level by myself. But I suppose that worked out for the best since I was given only one glass of water and no one came to ask if I needed a refill. More salt might have made me thirsty. My branzino was sitting on risotto that was a bit too al dente. The pancetta that my lunch companion ordered was nowhere near as salty as she expected, which contributed to the lack of seasoning to her carbonara entree and Brussels sprouts appetizer. I understand the restaurant must be busy (though our reservation was for the opening time, so we were beating the crowd) and was probably short of waiters but this has got to be the first time I ate my meal while reading the restaurant’s menu for entertainment. That and watching people who arrived after us getting their food first and guessing what they ordered. I’m curious if that’s the new Pandemic rule-that the restaurant menu should stay with the diners until the end of the meal. The menu took up our table space, and now I understand how the food stain got on it.
Good Afternoon, Thank you for the detailed review. We are so sorry your experience was less than perfect. We will take all aspects of the above mentioned and will relay to the staff and the kitchen. We hope to keep improving and would certain like another chance to provide you excellent customer service. Thank you, Management
Great food and service!
Such a disappointment. Restaurant week should be about attracting diners, but we waited 20 minutes at our table until we had to flag down a busser to find our server. Then we waited another 20 minutes for a salad and friti misti, then another 20 for our entrees. My branzino had been parked under the heat lamp for so long that the brodo had developed a pudding-like skin. My fork was visibly dirty, and I had to exchange it. As the server cleared our first course, he told us to remove our forks from our plates to “save” them. Then as he served our entrees he said, “Enjoy yourselves, GIRLS.” My friend and I are grown women, there were no children present. Really, the worst dining experience in my memory. This 2 course lunch took 90 minutes, and not because we were dawdling. We were ignored, when the place wasn’t even packed. Now I know why.
Our experience was wonderful. We sat outside and loved it except for the traffic. Food and service was excellent! Would definitely eat there again.
great staff, ambience, food and drinks. 1st drink was a little small but they made up for the second drink when we commented on the size. Lovely atmosphere.
Food took a very long time to come out. It was delicious but way too long.
