I went on a Thursday with a friend and was excited to try the restaurant because I love authentic Chinese cuisine. Many of the items in the menu are household staples that I know well, and so we embarked on this adventure with much enthusiasm but was disappointed by problems in every part of service.
First, we were served water straight from the tap, not filtered or anything. Then we were shocked to learn the 4” coaster under the glass was to be our plate when we ordered 4 first course items.
When the food came, everything was either way too sweet or way too salty; so someone in the back of the house was not tasting the food. The tofu was extremely sweet, and the sauce of course flooded my plate even before I had a chance to taste the xian cai fan, which was not good, and service in a bowl so small and overfilled that the table took its cut everytime we tried to refilled our tiny plates. The bokchoy was slightly overcooked, and yellowing. The duck breast was extremely salty. It’s like someone just added way too much of oyster sauce or hoisin sauce in each dish and didn’t taste anything. The crab dumplings we got, which was $18 a plate, came with not one but TWO broken dumplings (which for Chinese people is a big no no), and then the second tiny plate I asked for was chipped, which is yet another faux pas.
Front of the house service was lacking as well, the host was also the only waiter on staff, and was unimpressed when we asked him to bring the correct sake that we asked for. He did not know a nigori/unfiltered sake was to be served cold, and also didn’t shake it up when pouring.
There were so many problems with our meal we opted to not continue it and left for a different restaurant.
Excellent regional Chinese cuisine. Ate outside (Covid). Good service. Beef rib special was pricey but worth it.
Overpriced but tasty with good service
Gift for father night out
Excellent noodle dishes, apps were pricy, friendly servers
Friendly, small restaurant with a welcome variation on traditional Chinese cooking specializing in Yunnan provincial dishes. We will be returning.
Great flavors. Authentic food. Make sure you get the buns which were delicious. Lots of vegetarian options. Outdoor seating but no heaters.
This was a truly special meal. The cocktails and mocktails were delicious, the entrees were spectacular, and then the winter melon cheesecake was out of this world. Highly recommend this place.
Food was fantastic, our server was helpful and attentive and the place is so cozy! Overall great experience, we will be going back!
Food was excellent and I think worth coming here again. It was a bit expensive and our server didn’t know that much about the meal options to help us as we navigated around dietary restrictions.
No covid precautions as the tables are very close together and the staff are not required to wear masks, including the gentleman who brought us our food.
The service was really really bad. To preface, we arrived in time for our reservation and had to wait 5-7 min to be seated. We then waited another 10-15 min before anyone came to our table. Our server came and let us know that someone had quit recently so they were short staffed. We placed the order for our drinks and appetizers. We waited 15 min. The server came back and told us there was a mix up in the kitchen so he had to take our orders again. At this point we went ahead and ordered our entrees too because who knew how long it would be before we saw our server again.
While waiting for our food, there is some disturbance at the front of the restaurant where the manager (I think?) screams at a patron and tells them to leave because the patron was rude to one of his staff members. The staff member was crying in the middle of the one room restaurant and being consoled by the maskless waiter. Everyone is watching this happen, and it’s very awkward. Unclear why this wasn’t resolved in a calmer matter or why the staff member didn’t go to the back to seek comfort and console herself.
Part of our food finally comes out. It’s very tasty. We had to follow up twice with a different server because we didn’t see ours again, as we still needed our drinks and one entree. We had to request these items twice. Eventually they came and were also delicious.
We had our cards ready when asking for the check as we had no idea how long it would be before our server came back for payment.
All that to say, food was delicious and I would maybe try eating here again during a weekday but plan for chaos and have an open time table.
Great food and service! They have excellent selections of flavorful dishes.
First time back at Yunnann since the early days of the pandemic. The revamped space and ambiance is great and the updated menu superb. Excellent, well prepared food combined with friendly attentive service made for a wonderful evening. Looking forward to our next visit.
We sat outside in their patio area. It was lovely and intimate -- but properly physically distanced. We ordered a mix of vegan and non-vegan dishes and love them all. Their non-alcoholic drinks are also interesting and yummy. Servers are all very nice though some are more knowledgeable.
Its a decent spot, but feels a bit overpriced for the food that you received. Also I'm not sure if the food was undercooked or just cold, but i felt like it could be a bit better. But our server was very energetic and helpful and I loved their lychee cocktail/martini. All in all a decent time.
My sons 5th year bday dinner! He loves noodles so this was perfect! Appetizers are fabulous!!
We made reservations and were sat after folks arriving without them. I overheard the server tell one party without reservations, “hurry up and sit there so no one else gets it first.” We then waited for an hour to receive our appetizer and when our food arrived it arrived cold. Unfortunately we left very disappointed for my son’s 13th birthday dinner.
Food was excellent and the staff tired to keep up but were Clearly impacted by a staffing shortage that night - I would definitely go back and hope Managment can find more team members and acknowledge that is tough in this hiring environment
Warning this is not a place for celiacs! We went out of our way to come here as the menu says the noodle bowls are gluten free, but only the noodle part is. Everything that goes in the bowl is covered in soy sauce. Also very concerning that when the waiter was asked if there was anything I could eat (we clarified that celiacs can't eat wheat/flour/most soy sauces) he started listing items that he emphasized did not have butter which did not give me high confidence that he understood the concept of wheat.
We dined on the last day of Alexandria Restaurant Week. It took a while to get our Lychee Lyfe cocktails, which tasted watered down and no hint of saki. The fried rice small plates were delicious. It is not worth paying an extra $3 for the dumplings to be pan fried. The Mixian (rice noodles) bowls and soup were tasty, although the noodles were overcooked. It was our server's 2nd week there. Although he was pleasant and friendly, his service was less than desired. The restaurant was not even half full when we arrived, but it was full after 30 minutes. We did not receive our first course until after 30 minutes. He served tea without hot water in the pot. It took a while to get his attention inorder to get the hot water. There were 6 of us. Our first course came piecemeal, one couple had finished their spicy chicken baos before the second couple received their fried rice with potatoes. It was another 5 minutes before the 3rd couple received the pickled mustard greens fried rice. After waiting to receive our bill, our credit cards came back with wrong charges.
Interesting menu. Every course was superb. Server made excellent suggestions. And the wine selections were excellent and well priced. Will return often.
The dumpling are perfection. The cocktails are delicious and unique. The server was very busy but still did a great job. We will definitely be back.
Excellent food and service.
Excessive amount of raw red onions and scallions, could not even taste anything, or order additional dishes
The staff here is great!!! The food is also great, but when the service is great, the food tastes even better! I'll definitely be back!! Everything we tried was great!
Absolutely everything was excellent. You will not be disappointed.
Noodle dishes are delicious. The owner and the waitress are very friendly. Overall, we had wonderful experience. This is the restaurant we will definitely come back again.
Excellent dumplings, but disjointed, amateurish service. Seemed expensive relative to overall experience.
We were excited to try this place but our reservation was not honored. The staff was rude and we ended up not eating here because they could not give us an estimated wait time. In fact we are glad we left because the Italian restaurant around the corner (a la Lucia) was wonderful.
We came down on Mother’s Day and couldn’t hVe been treated anymore special! Wonderful food and great service!
Just outstanding! Read they reopened recently post covid and had a bookmark in my browser waiting to go. Wow! It was worth the wait. Innovative, fresh food that be way beyond the goopy mess that you get at chain Chinese. The service was excellent, attentive and prompt. Food was expertly prepared and meal well paced. The menu lends itself to sharing and exploring and I can’t wait to get back to try everything!
Amazing spot! One of the best authentic Chinese meals in the area
Food was AMAZING! Will be back.
It was noisy because it was full and people were having a good time😀
I think we had the last indoor table on a cold rainy evening.
Good food all around as usual.
The pot roast dumplings are a must, I'm still dreaming of them. The outdoor seating was nicely done considering you are basically on the street.
Food and service was outstanding. Must try the Lychee cocktail, house made dumplings, and buns. Will be coming here regularly.
The food and service are amazing!! We had chicken and beef dumplings, pan fried spicy chicken bao buns, little 4 cucumbers(on the house due to a little mixup), Liang Mixian Salad, and Braised Beef Lu. Our group of 5 enjoyed every bite!
The food and service are outstanding.
Thanks so much! We look forward to having you back soon!
Excellent staff food and owner!!!
Thanks for the kind words! Can't wait to have you back!
This was our first time here and everything we ordered was fantastic. Perfect spot to order a few small plates and share. The potatoes, pan fried pork belly buns, chicken basil steamed dumplings, and lettuce wrap noodle bowl were all amazing and so tasty. Will definitely be back.
So glad you enjoyed everything! We look forward to your next visit!
