The Reading Room offers guests of the Bar Harbor Inn, visitors to Bar Harbor, and our dearly loved regulars a distinguished fine dining experience overlooking Frenchman Bay.

Serving breakfast and dinner daily, the Reading Room is a one of a kind dining experience. Delectable local Maine cuisine and attentive service are surpassed only by the magnificent panoramic ocean views.

Start your evening with locally farmed oysters while deciding between our signature Beef Short Ribs or Filet and Lobster Tail fresh from the boats on the Harbor. Linger over a slice of Maine Blueberry Pie while you enjoy a crafted cocktail and soft piano music.

Smart casual attire is preferred, but not required. We do not accept parties exceeding 6 people. Please note that we are not able to guarantee tables by the window.

The hotel is beautifully set up above the harbor, the restaurant has a 180 view of Frenchman’s Bay. From pulling up to the front of the hotel and dropping off my family, the fellas at the door were very warm and friendly. The hostesses were very hospitable. Our table was just as requested, a water view. The piano man in the bar was a wonderful touch…. We were celebrating a birthday! They put a card on the table, put a candle and chocolate HB piece in the desert she ordered and the piano man played Happy Birthday when she got her desert!!! We had the clam chowder, the lobster, the ribeye, and the land and sea! It was fantastic! The ribeye was excellent and the others had no complaints. I would definitely recommend putting this in your list!

Amazing food and experience! On a trip with my Mom and seated at a window table with a view of the Margaret Todd - thanks so much Joe! And thank you Sabrina for taking wonderful care of us all evening! Started with the Caesar and Beet Burrata salads - delicate and refreshing. For mains the scallops with roasted fennel and lobster hash (divine) and Lazy Lobster (delicious). The suggested wine pairings were both perfect. The Apple Bomb dessert can’t be missed - each layer brings new flavor and presentation is culinary artistry. Great evening from start to finish.

So I was really excited to try reading room based on other reviews. I was only able to get in at 8pm and so having a late dinner with the sun down, I think you lose some of the appeal. You don’t get the water view, and the lighting is super bright. So you see everyone around you, instead of just being able to focus on your table. Additionally, our server was just a bit odd. Everyone we encountered in Maine was super friendly, and this guy just seemed like we were inconveniencing him. He wasn’t rude or anything but it was just a different experience from what I was expecting. The food itself was delicious though. I had the lamb chops and my wife had the filet. Both were cooked to perfection. We left absolutely stuffed and I felt like for the quality of food it was a good value for the price. Next time I’d just make sure to do an earlier dinner when the sun is still up and shining.

Very good food, fresh and tasty! Piano player was a nice touch! Wanted to see the sunset for our important anniversary but had a table that didn’t allow it though did get a nice Happy Anniversary card which will be a nice souvenir.
