The quality of the food and the quality of service don’t match. Great front host, great food, mediocre wait staff and customs. Not changing plates between shared courses is below the aspiration of the kitchen, which deserves better. Maybe the industrial aprons the wait staff wears reflects that they do work hard, but the food has improved so much that the aprons just seem off.
The chef's choice tasting option is a terrific experience to share. Way more food than we could eat and honestly enjoyed every single dish. Service was on point, overall terrific double date night!
Food was good but not great. Meant for “sharing” which I’m not crazy about. Food comes out at different times. My wife’s chicken came out 10 minutes before my trout—awkward. Wine expensive $12 for Chardonnay. Apple Cobler loaded with cinnamon. Service was excellent but staff seemed overwhelmed as they couldn’t seem to clear plates or clean table. Overall we enjoyed the experience but with all the new restaurants in Detroit we won’t rush back.
Great food with exception of weird mushroom sauce gnocchi. Great ambiance and services and drinks. The crab cakes out of this world . Will definitely dine there again
We've been four times now and they are consistently GREAT!
We are from Canada and We have been their several times and always order the chef suggestion and it never disappoints! Always delicious!
Service was very good! Ambiance was wonderful and overall another great experience! We will definitely return!
Great food & service. I would definitely go back. I chose the “Let Chef Cook” option on the menu & got a great variety of fantastic food.
Fantastic meal. Trout was delicious. Charcuterie Board was awesome. Definitely enjoyed my time at Republic and would go again.
Delicious food, great service and wonderful evening, thank you.
I have actually been going to Republic since it opened and this was unfortunately the most disappointing experiences to date. There were only about 5 tables of guests but service lacked attention or interest. The selections on the menu seemed to be in transition and lacked cohesion. The dessert selections were "basic."
I hope to return to Republic in the future and hope that they are able to return my confidence as a guest.
My Wife and I went to Republic for our Anniversary withhigh expectations. The Reviews were very promising. However our experience was one that left a lot to be desired. We can deal with the Noise Level, but just a note it is very loud while busy. The menu was extremely limited versus what listed online (completely understand rotating menus). Starters, they were out of Crab Cakes (which we were looking forward too), so there were only 3 to choose from. For the Table, there were only 4 options, and 1 was also out. There 3 feast options. Mind you everything at Republic is served family style so it meant to be shared.
We had the half Charcuterie plate, which had Smoked Salmon, Duck Mousse (not a typical Charcuterie item), Cheese, and house made jelly. Duck Mousse was uneatable, the Salmon ok, and the highlight was jelly. We also got an order of the Roasted Carrots, which arrived before the plate (and both arrived before our drinks). The Carrots were the highlight of the evening, but still not on point. The seasoning on the carrots were great, but the Carrots themselves were under cooked making it difficult to cut with a butter knife (all you get to cut). We also tried the Okonomiyaki, which the description is completely misleading on (listed as Dry Cured Pork, Picked Blueberries). It was a Japanese Pancake with Hoision Sauce on it. While interesting, it was just ok, and not what we expected. Our Fest item was Steak. While cooked to a good mid-rare, it was flavorless, tough and very fatty. The Black rice and Peppers added nothing to dish. For dessert we tried the Chocolate Eclair, probably the largest disappointment of the evening. There is filling at the ends of the eclair and at less than 1 inch wide it is by far the smallest eclair I have ever seen. Flavor was ok, the ice cream was needed as the eclair was dry due to no cream filling.
As for Service it was disappointing. Warm water to drink and slow. Overall, Republic was a huge disappointment.
This was my first time dining here and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I went with a friend for a girls date and she enjoyed herself as well. I liked the choices of hand-crafted cocktails and mine was very good. Also we ended up splitting 2 appetizers, 1 main dish, and 1 dessert which was PERFECT! Not a huge menu, but I appreciate the farm-to-table thought and the local ingredients/seasonal ingredients used. This was a date before going to the theater and what a treat it was!
It has a great energy and they have a quality menu with complex dishes that actual work. Love it
Service was awful, food was mediocre and overpriced
Perhaps not in vogue as their neighbor across the street. The food is still great. The service not so much. Slow, ambivalent, and I’m wondering how much longer they can last.
We were visiting Detroit and really enjoyed a great meal at Republic. Service for drinks was a little slow, but other than that the service was professional. Food was delicious and a beautiful space. Nice to be in another recently saved historic Detroit building.
We feel we’ve found a gem. As first timers the 4 of us agreed to the chefs choice. Everything that came out from the kitchen was delicious! We each tried a different craft cocktail and appreciated the attention to detail. For us the chefs choice was a great value...by the time the duck and steak arrived we were full but it allowed us to try things we wouldn’t have if we were choosing as a group. The trouble was we loved everything. Table favorites included the crab cakes, scallops and Japanese pancake. Hats off to the chef and his team.
I just don’t understand why every place in the city is tasting and small plates. Whatever happened to a salad, a veggie, a starch and a main course. Had to go some place else to split a burger after we ate. It was good, just not a meal.
Republic has the best bar I've been to in Detroit. The bartenders make all the syrups everyday, and they clearly care about their craft. The food is amazing too, as they push boundaries all the time. I still remember a duck pate that was out of this world.
My second time here. Great food and service. Highly recommend.
Great place , has very city like feel to it.
We will definately be back
We chose the very generous ‘chef’s choice’ menu. Plenty of delicious food for the price, $60 pp. Too much for that night, but we had delicious left overs the next night. All around very enjoyable dining experience. Thank you!
Not many choices for dinner. Food ok
Excellent service and food was outstanding.
Order the Chef's special. It's worth every penny and you get a nice variety. Love that they locally-source.
We had heard great things about Republic from friends, so when my sister and brother-in-law were coming in from out of town we made a reservation a few months in advance. We arrived, ordered a round of drinks and three appetizers, the carrots, the salad, and the charcuterie plate. All were pretty average but the 4 options for entrées (that was it!) on the menu looked good so we ordered the beef tenderloin, the boar Ragu, and the scallops. Our waiter came back a minute or two later and told us that they were all out of the beef tenderloin. He left and came back again another minute later and said they were also out of the boar Ragu. Literally of the four entrées that were available at the restaurant, he was telling us that two of them were completely out and unavailable. I thought we were being Punked! This was a restaurant we came to eat dinner and we were informed after ordering drinks and appetizers that we were not going to be able to eat dinner there. We had a conversation with the manager, got our check (they comped a $50 bottle of wine for us but not the food), and had to go find another restaurant to eat dinner. For a restaurant that has won some awards these past few years, it could not have been a more disappointing experience for us. The good news is that we walked across the street to Lumen and had a great meal. For anybody thinking of going to Republic I would ask your waiter if everything is in stock for that evening before ordering anything, and consider going to Lumen instead. We will certainly not be back
I enjoyed my meal at Republic, but I thought the service could have been improved. Additionally, I thought the food was overpriced for the quality and there was not an extensive list of options to choose from. I would say it was somewhat limiting.
Great restaurant! Excellent food for Detroit. I've been in a couple of other high class restaurants in Detroit (Selden Standard, Mable Grey, Grey Ghost, Iridecence to name a few) and the food at Rebublic was the best so far.
Very cool interior design!
Service could have been a bit more attentive (we had to wave quite hard a couple of times to get the attention of a waiter) and my husband got a wine glass with lip stick from a previous user.
Had a wonderful time at Republic. Seated immediately and greeted by our server. Ordered dishes at our pace. Started with the bread and butter after ordering wine. Staff heard my wife raved about the butter and provided some additional bread for us to enjoy. The place was nearly full and we enjoy dining in that atmosphere. Scallops were delicious and the swiss roll was a wonderful dessert to end the night. Have been trying to make reservations there at a time we like to dine for a very long time. Will recommend Republic to friends and family.
We absolutely loved it. Foodie heaven for sure.
We were kind of disappointed in the service. We were sat immediately, as we had a reservation. We received water. Then we waited. And we waited. There were two waiters, on a Thursday at 7:30pm. Approximately 6 or 7 tables. No server. I went up to the bar and begged the bar manager to place an order for an appetizer, as i was starving. That got the ball rolling and a server came over, who told us he was helping our server, who did have a larger table of 7 or 8 people. The rest of the evening went fine. We did see 3 different tables paying their bill at the bar, because the waiter gave it to them, but never came back to cash it out. Not my best night there.
As always we appreciate the great service and innovative menu at Republic! The dishes are often paired with ingredients in an unusual way but have never been disappointed even though we do not consider ourselves super adventuresome. Thanks for another wonderful experience.
Really expensive and they suggest 3-5 plates. Food came out to Fast`
Unimpressive overpriced food. Menu trying to hard to be creative, but the result barely edible. Chewy mushrooms in a greasy tempura batter rendered soggy in a flavorless beet juice. Wild boar ragu also a let down - noodles clumped together into a cold knot, and barely any boar to be seen. Okonomiyaki was essentially a pancake that was so sweet it belongs on the dessert menu. Service lacking as well. If waiter was trying to be "friendly" it came off as pushy/aggressive, and we ran out of there to salvage the night elsewhere.
Loved this place! My husband and I had a much needed date night here and we loved everything about it. It was a nice atmosphere and we loved the shared plates. Food was excellent and the drinks were great also.
Went to Republic initially for Detroit Restaurant Week and was impressed enough with the food and drinks to return for my 2 year wedding anniversary and was not disappointed. While there was a lot of different menu items than our previous visit everything was excellent. Everything from the bread and butter to our drinks and entrees were cooked perfectly and very flavorful. The wait staff was attentive and accommodating to our orders as well. Couldn't be happier with our anniversary dinner, will be returning again very soon.
Awesome. I know something about tofu I did not know
Service was very good. Food was good, but not so good that I would come back and order the same thing or tell a friend they need to try 'that'. Many of the dishes used similar garnish / spice (e.g. spicy peepers), which may be part of the seasonal menu constraints, but left me wondering what the thought process was for the dish... the peppers were added because it goes with the dish or just because that's the garnish available to work with. Drinks were good and the atmosphere was nice. Overall it was a good experience, but it's not on my list to revisit.
Good experience, food is good but overpriced!!
Not at all what we anticipated based on researching and reading multiple reviews. The overall feeling we had after leaving besides being hungry was, the owners must be having a good laugh at all the people who fall for the hype. Way overpriced for what you are getting. Our waiter was inexperienced, shy and not very engaging, appeared to be overwhelmed or maybe just extremly uncomfortable doing that type of work. The nosie level was extreme, do not go if you are looking to have a nice dinner and hear one another. Family style should include more than 5 carrots thrown in a bowl, undercooked with less than a teaspoon of sauce. The bread had 3 pieces with unsalted crystalized butter. Water served had no ice and saying luke warm would be misleading. The deserts were bland and not much flavor and very small. Would never recommend but we will continue to share our empty experience for many years to come as it was a part of my hubby’s 50th birthday weekend.
you need better service at a upscale place.
dessert wasn't ready and it wasn't anything elaborate
wrong bottle of wine was brought
entree prices were reasonable, but everything else was overpriced
