We dined at Republic before the Red Wings hockey game. The staff was attentive without being intrusive. The food is served in sharable portions which suits us perfectly. Second visit here. We will be returning soon. Especially enjoyed the duck!
The historic location is its best asset but the atmosphere and "locally procured" ingredients are also very attractive. The food was delicious and I loved the cocktail as well.
It's not that I didn't like Republic, food was good, main courses good size and taste was very good, the sharing plates was a little limited and a bit small, but what killed it for me was the service. Or if you want to even call it service. This is unfortunately a growing trend if you have any server under the age of 25, they just don't know what service is. Waitress took our orders and disappeared for a long time, then someone else brought out shared plates that took literally forever. Then my friends dinners came out and mine showed up no lie 20min later and the waitress was literally no where to be found to even ask what was going on. Didn't ask if we wanted dessert, then brought me tea with no sugar, no spoon, guess I was to use my finger to stir it, just absolute lack of caring about anything that happened with our dinners, what we needed, she was just total space case. And when you are paying the price you are at this restaurant I just feel that someone should at least acknowledge you occasionally. What killed it really was that 20min later dinner I ordered after my other friends meals and there was no apology or even offer to comp a drink or anything. I know when a normal dinner takes 3hours to finish due to slow service or lack of, something isn't right at this place.

Matt Curry knocked it out with the Chefs Prix-Fixe menu. Rabbit Fricasse, Roasted Trout, Smoked Duck, Smoked Beets and finishing with Chocolate Mouse.
Everything was presented, discussed and served with style. The staff moved an efficient pace but not to fast to rush you. They were knowledgable about their menu and seemed to enjoy their work! We took two hours to savor our meal and enjoyed every minute! I recommend you ask for the Chefs Choice
We absolutely loved the restaurant. Jake was an excellent server. We enjoyed it so much we returned for dessert after our show!!
This was a date night for me and my girlfriend. Our table was ready on time, and the service was excellent throughout the evening. Our primary server, Katie, was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and attentive. The food runner who brought out the dishes described each one thoroughly, and the busser was polite and quick. The food was simply awesome. The Lamb Chorizo was awesome, just the right level of spice. The vegan pasta dish (Roso Volo) was fantastic, and the roasted beets were also fabulous. We chose the Moonpie from the specials menu for dessert; it was nice but not quite the standout that the other dishes were. The atmosphere was upbeat and energetic, lots of fun. A little loud if you are looking for a romantic setting, but that was mostly due to a large party celebrating a special event right next to us. I suspect on a typical night this would not be an issue. Bottom line, GO! A true gem, amazing local ingredients arranged into creative dishes with fantastic flavor. I will definitely find an occasion to go again, and introduce others to the experience.
Trendy, open atmosphere, not a private dining experience. The menu is farm to table. The food quality is just ok, we had multiple dishes, vegan, fish and beef. They are way over priced for the type of food they are serving. Preview the menu before picking this place to eat. Sticker shock on the price for the taste. Tenderloin over cooked and tough. Lamb undercooked and fatty. Service slightly above average. Won’t be a return visit for us.
Nice dinner, but courses of tasting menu arrived too close
The environment and décor were great. The waiter could have done a better job explaining the menu since it is difficult to understand what you are ordering. We ordered a steak, which didn't specify on the menu that it was a pork steak. No big deal, we are not picky eaters but the steak was literally ALL fat. I never send food back, but simply had to. The waiter explained that the cut is fattier, but this could not be normal. The chef should have caught this before it was served. We watched a girl at the table next to us eating the same thing, pushing her food around the plate, cutting, and cutting trying to find a decent bite. I felt bad for her and wish she would have spoke up about it. Drinks were great, carrot cake for dessert was good too! Overall, we enjoyed ourselves but ate pizza 2 hours later.
We and a very good dinner at Republic on New Years Eve. The service was outstanding the food for sharing all very good and unique. Enjoyed the tasty smoked/roasted beets-starter, rabbit entree and squid/black ink pasta entree. The waiter provided outstanding service and the manager and other staff, great customer service. We would definitely return.
Best meal we’ve ever had. Unreal food. The bartender was even kind enough to order us a Lyft to get back to our hotel. To our surprise, the ride was paid for when we arrived at our destination.
The pre fix menu was amazing! We got so many delicious entrees and the staff was timely and very friendly. We all loved it! Would definitely recommend

Had to send an item back to the kitchen (poorly thought out and executed potato dish); the menu is a bit pricey for what is delivered to the table; the space is very cool tho.
We had an excellent dinner at Republic. The food was excellent, as was the service. The entrees were very creative.
Holiday dinner with family
I have been to Republic in the past and it has always been very good. We had the newly added tasting menu and it was even better. Great service and a great mix from the menu. And the bar there is a great place to hang out as well. Recommend strongly for anyone who is looking for something eclectic and excellent.
We were pleased with the craft cocktail to start our evening and each plate brought was appealing to the eye as well as amazingly delicious. We had a lovely evening.

Our whole table decided to do the chef’s selection course and we were not disappointed. Between the four of use we all tried just about every dish in the menu and the portions were perfect for each dish. I would highly recommend for a group of friends out to try some of the best food Detroit has to offer.
The menu wasn’t as diverse as usual so we were a little underwhelmed. We had to send the salmon dish back because the middle was raw. Other than that, everything was delicious as per usual.
Was able to score a last minute reservation for a pre-theartre meal. Newer waitress, she had a terrific attitude, but was not properly trained. (Did not know where the elk was sourced, as an example) Wine list (described as the "reserve list") featured TWELVE different bottle selections... that was the total selection. Smoked duck breast was perfect, elk tenderloin was also very good, The beef tenderloin was ordered a rare plus and came out well done, they happily replaced it.
The food comes out when it is cooked with no attention to the flow of the meal. They suggest you "share" the plate as it comes out. So a table of four gets a rare piece of meat with one steak knife to be "shared" with the other three guests...... weird. Great kitchen, but the front room needs to up their game.
Overall a very good experience. Had reservations and we did not have to wait to be seated. Waiter was friendly, helpful and attended to us at just the right times. i.e. he was not constantly interrupting. Food was delicious. "Small" plates style so get several and share. I did not find the prices out of line. Had mixed drinks and beer. All good. Beer selection is not large but variety is excellent. My advice - try it!

I ve been dining at republic once a month, sometimes with my wife or with out of town business guests. The food quality and variety have always been great. I think that in terms of quality and variety is by far the best restaurant in downtown. Always order the Chef’s run. Just outstanding quality and fresh ingredients. Great job guys!!

The rotating menu always had great selections but your favorite dish probably will not be served next time you're there. Our meal was really Good, Elk tenderloin and fresh pasta were perfect! The Two top tables near the bar are noisy and make it hard to have a conversation , ask for something farther in the dining room. Overall a great dining experience.
We were strongly encouraged to do the Prix-Fixe Menu, which raises the bar. The food was quite good although I would put it short of outstanding. The service was a tad inattentive - water glasses not filled promptly, fresh plates not brought without asking, dirty plates left to linger. We were not offered coffee/tea at dessert. With so many excellent options in Detroit these days, it takes a truly outstanding experience to deliver on the price and I felt Republic was lacking somewhat - primarily from a service perspective. Overall good, but not great
Our first time at Republic and it definitely won't be the last! Food was different but we Loved it. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Drinks were very good too! Great birthday dinner❤
The food was extremely salty. People that came in after us were having their orders taken before our waitress even asked us for a drink order. Also, she messed up on my husbands entrée, but she did make it right by giving us free dessert. Overall, I wouldn’t go again unless someone was buying my meal for me, I don’t think it’s worth it.
We had a wonderful, very tasty dinner at Republic and the waitstaff was exceptional and warm. I loved the ambiance with the holiday lights within the restaurant and at the public space outside. Every single choice we made was delicious. My only quibble is that I could have used a tiny bit larger portions. But it was a great first meal at Republic. I hope to go back soon.
We went to Republic on our first date and returned 1 year later. The food was outstanding! Our server was great too. Unfortunately our last dish took 40 minutes to arrive. We had an addition to our date, his 89 yr old father. Waiting 40 minutes for his dish wasn't the high light of the evening. The manager came over, not by request, but because our server made him aware that we were inquiring about the last dish. He immediately offered to take the last dish off our bill. We were very appreciative! Only suggestion, advise your party of the serving style before arrival. Us as a couple, love the serving style, but its different and not for everyone.
Had such a wonderful night! Took my parents for dinner while we visited from NY and Chicago and just loved it! Our waitstaff was attentive, knowledgeable and passionate about Detroit and Republic. Great experience. Does get really loud quth the pre theatre crows.
I told our waitress that I had some dietary restrictions for medical reasons. I asked questions about the options and we ordered plates we thought were safe. One plate came out with some raw items that I am not allowed to eat. I asked that it be served without those items. The server grilled me, needing to know exactly what medical condition would not allow one to eat things raw. I tried to explain it without detail, not wanting to talk about such things at dinner, however he kept questioning me. Once I told him exactly he understood, but did not apologize. At that point, I was flustered and embarrassed. We will never be returning.
Also - they have an amazing list of cocktails, but no options for those who do not drink alcohol. Very disappointing for a "farm to table" advertised place.
Very Slow service. Food was good but nothing outstanding. Took over two hours to eat dinner. Really, $15.00 for a glass of Cabernet. Many other places to eat. No need to hurry back.
Girls weekend dinner - late reservation. Food was excellent. Service was a little off. We had to wait about 10 minutes to get drunk order taken. Busy time was winding down.
Highly recommend Republic. Sat at a bar table until our dining table was ready. Bar waitress was very knowledgeable and had good recommendations. Food was excellent as we shared seven plates for four people. You don’t need to share but it made the dining experience even better.
