About ROKA

The name ROKA carries great meaning - ROKA is a meeting place where food and drinks are shared with friends (ro) and heat, warmth and an all-embracing energy surround (ka). The principle cuisine is from the robata grill, which originates from the fishermen of the northern coastal waters off japan, who would cook the fish on the boats with different charcoals and share the bounty with one another using their oars.

ROKA charlotte street opened in 2004, ROKA canary wharf in 2009, ROKA mayfair in february 2014 and ROKA aldwych in october 2014.

We had the lunch deal and it was good quality and good value. My friend doesn’t eat red meat and they kindly substituted a beef dish with a vegetarian option. Service was very good throughout.

We had the premium tasting menu, which was excellent. Everything was delicious from start to finish. The first few dishes come out in fairly quick order, but things slow down as the meal progresses and we ended up spending a very pleasant and leisurely 3 hours. Service was top notch, the restaurant was lively but not too noisy that you couldn't have a conversation. Great experience and would return again.

The consistently good food at Roka was let down by very poor service. Once initial order was taken, we had to get up and flag down a waiter for eg more tea, to order extra food etc. We ordered some chicken skewers when the first lot of sushi arrived, the wrong chicken was then delivered, and the skewers did not appear. We asked twice and they finally arrived with the bill as we were trying to leave. Disappointing, although we were given a discount to account for the poor service. The restaurant was not busy either.

The restaurant has subdued lighting and no exterior windows in main restaurant and is smart and business like. Not sure I would come to this branch for a lingering celebration meal but the food is knock out - a wonderful pre theatre meal was had by myself and my husband at 17.30. We chose our own menu and as we were asked by the waiter whether we were going to the theatre it arrived in good time. All the Roka must haves were delicious, spicy edamame, sushi, sashimi, crab dumplings, and our absolute fave the black cod with sides of asparagus and broccoli. The rice is extremely delicious too, topped with black sesame and cooked to perfection. I particularly enjoyed the mock tail I had - matcha green tea lovely and refreshing. It’s not cheap £234 for 2 people no alcohol but you get what you pay for here. Service polite maybe a bit stiff but as I said for me this branch is a functional foodie heaven restaurant not somewhere to take root for the night.

Having eaten at Roka at Canary Wharf on many occasions, we were highly disappointed by this branch of Roka. From the dry food to the poor service! It is safe that if this was the only branch of Roka we had eaten at, we would not be returning.
