About Roux

Offering up an atmosphere that’s both fun and relaxing, this cozy neighborhood spot is the perfect place for any occasion. The chic and stylish décor is only outdone by a menu that has something for everyone. With food that is rooted in contemporary French-American technique, Roux offers classic dishes with Chef Derrick Markland’s own twists. Comfort foods like hushpuppies and gumbo are complemented by more adventurous favorites like catfish and jambalaya, with daily specials that are sure to please. Though the open kitchen is the focal point with its up-close dining experience and custom industrial barstools, the bar is not to be ignored. With its large oyster bed and selection of bourbons, it’s a great spot for a night cap. During the summer there’s nothing better than having a pint from one of Toronto"s local breweries and people watching on the patio. With its location in the steadily growing Junction neighborhood, Roux is a place for everyone to feel at home.

It was New Year's Eve so they did a prix fix menu which I wasn't anticipating. Some of the food was cold (that should have been hot) but everything tasted okay. Portions were small. Nothing blew me away. They had a photobooth set up, that was a nice touch, and all the balloons were very festive. I doubt I'll go back.

Very nice ambiance and the food was very good. Loved the balloons and the DJ played great music that suited the evening. Liked the photo machine (nice touch). Chef --as always-- very friendly.

The interior has a warm, cozy and rustic LOOK but my friends and I were quite chilly! It was a very cold December night outside, so they should have bumped up the heat. Service at first was good, but soon it became busier and the ONE waitress working had her hands full taking care of everyone. We felt somewhat negleted at times. Apps and food were above average quality. My friend ordered a Caesar to drink unaware it would come with half a sausage and deep fried something attached for $15. Hahaha we had a good laugh but she purposely adjusted her food choice to the burger not to break her budget. Our first time there, and normally people don’t read drink menus if they order the same drink. Wine expensive but seems to be the case these days...a bit weird when the LCBO sign is glaring at you right across the street! You can bring your own they have a $25 corking fee. Overall we didn’t regret our choice but next get together we’ll explore another venue.

The food was great and the menu has a variety of interesting choices. Service was a little disorganized but very pleasant. The only negative thing was a cold blast when the front door opened. I'm not sure haw to avoid that in winter - maybe a heavy curtain on the way in.

Maybe they were having an off night but the service was terrible. The lights in there were way too bright, they never told us of any specials, never made any recommendations, took too long to take our order, I had to wave the bartender to get our servers attention to order a round of drinks, never offered dessert, took too long to get our bill. It didnt seem like they were too busy to handle things, either. Gotta say, the food might have made up for it, though. Everything we ate was so delicious! Kudos to a talented kitchen staff!

A great spot for a delicious meal. We had cornmeal crusted catfish and braised pork belly with a side of collards - everything was delicious! Be sure to leave room for a great Americano coffee and dessert too.

This isn't the kind of cooking that you can knock off quickly at home - think "low and slow" and take your time to enjoy it. We'll be back - some of the dinner specials are really tempting and the prices are very, very reasonable.

Despite having had Roux on our list for some months, it did not meet expectations. Ambience was fine, staff were pleasant and accommodating and drinks were tasty, but that's about it. All of our dishes were disappointing, starting with a dozen east coast oysters, served on runny ice chips with some hot sauce. I only ever eat oysters with fresh grated horseradish and lemon, but noone seemed to care or come around to check that we needed anything, so I ate them nude, but I would've liked more attentive service. My main was jambalaya which was overshadowed by dry gluey rice from a mold, stuck together with black eyed peas. It took quite some effort to unstick the brick and it dissolved in the mediocre sauce just fine, but it's a presentation and choice of rice that I could do without. Maybe serve the sauce on the side so it gets poured over and assists with the dissolving? But really, perhaps just scrap the rice altogether. My partner had the smoked board of meat and everything on it was dried through, pretty much inedible, it was like being served a plate of sawdust. Very sad dining experience, we'll stick to Farmhouse in the junction and Montreal for hipster smokehouses.

Love the atmosphere here. I’m not a huge fan of the style of cuisine here but a burger and a glass of wine is plenty to keep me happy.

Excellent service. The cassoulet and the scallops were delicious. The cassoulet was advertised as having bacon in it, but it must have been minced v e r y thin.

Nothing beats Chef Derrick's Brunch Menu for a leisurely weekend brunch. A favourite when we have out of town company and want to capitalize on time to socialize. My fav is the Pulled Pork Bennies, with a side of cheezy grits, though the cornflake crusted french toast is a close second. This is not a "brunch place" we also enjoy date-night dinners, with great cocktails and wonderful food.

We had dinner for 5 people on Saturday September 7 wither reservations at 7:30. Overall Roux provides some interesting takes on southern cooking. Of note was the catfish and pork belly combo. The Fish was nicely seasoned and flaky and the pork belly just melted in your mouth. Also very good was the grits and scallops...two at the table ordered in and were not sharing so I have to assume it was good!

The one downside was that it took over 45 minutes to get our drinks. We were not in a rush but that was a long wait and no water on the table during that time. Once the drinks came they were good and service the rest of the evening was good.

Food was hit or miss, and definitely not worth the 1.5h it took for our table of 3 to receive our mains. We asked three times before the staff seemed to take our complaints seriously. Water was never re-filled. Will not be returning or recommending.

We were disappointed that they did not have oysters that night! We sat inside but it was pretty warm! Server was very nice! We had mussels, beer salad and calamari! All was very good! Everything came our at the correct temperature and portions were good! I had the bouillabaisse! It was very flavorful and there was plenty of fish/shellfish! Did particularly care for potatoes! All in all a very good experience!

We went here for a birthday with a group of 12. It was Wednesday night and we were the only ones in the restaurant the entire time. This usually would be red flag, and not going to lie weirded me out a little bit, but we ended up getting top knot he service and eating delicious food! We had great charcuterie boards, and the seafood samplers to start, and various dishes as mains. Everyone was beyond pleased with their order! The jambalaya was spicy if you are not a spice person - I wouldn't recommend it. The presentation of the food was also to be noted. They have a great selection of local beers as well as some good bourbon and cocktails. Lastly, I would go back just for the playlist!! Amazing soul playlist played all night. Great vibe, great food and drinks, great service!

We were returning for our 3rd time. We had enjoyed each of the meals we've had there. The menu has good choices and there are always interesting specials. The catfish is delicious.
On this visit, the service was not great - one person seemed to be doing everything, other than cooking, for the entire restaurant.
My friend ordered one of their special cocktails. When she tried it, she didn't like the taste of it - extremely bitter. The waiter swapped it for a glass of wine but proceeded to charge us for it (none of us has had that happen). We asked why and he said "because you ordered it"....left us with a bad taste in our mouth.

Great soul food with a modern twist! Service was a bit slow, with up to 10 minutes for a beer to come back and he forgot one of our drink orders. He was the only server there, however, and it was moderately full so...

STILL a very enjoyable place to spend the evening. Would return!

Great food and ambiance but the meal was ruined for me because the wait staff did not follow the instructions in the comment I left when making the reservation on open table, which said that it was my partner's birthday and asked to please bring a dessert with a candle. We ordered dessert and there was no candle, which obviously looked negligent on my part. If I had known they would ignore my comment I would have communicated my request to the staff in person at the restaurant

Can't comment much about this place.....it is required that we fill in the top part of this form commenting about the experience but there really wasn't one as we were not even able to make it in as they cancelled our reservation one hour prior to having it.....which I think is important for others to know!

On the day of the reservation we got a voicemail saying they had cancelled our reservation with no explanation why and it was booked for a time when all their sites say they are open.

We never got to go and there has been no follow up or apology or just really letting us know what happened. If there was a valid reason. ie. we overbooked by accident. there was a kitchen fire. we had to close for the night due to unforseen circumstances..etc...etc....then I would totally understand.

Quite disappointed from a customer service standpoint that we were not told why.

The food was mediocre even though we were all excited about the menu.
Didn't have certain ingredients to make some drinks that we asked for. Service was lacking and the worst part was that they forgot to punch in my husbands order so when everyone's food came, he just sat there and waited. He was told that chicken and waffles take a while to make and if he wanted to get something else. He insisted on C&W and had to wait for 15 min.
Over all- wasn't a big fan and most likely won't be back.
