Set in an array of Victorian rowhouses, Sassafraz has evolved through the decades to become a magical space in the heart of historic Yorkville. Located at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland, the little yellow house has "seen it all".View Private Dining Details
Fantastic experience. Just leaving our mini vacations in Canada and departure couldn’t be more special. Davis our waiter was just sooo into us that there was no small detail he didn’t anticipate or take care of. The food... unbelievable and the whole experience was a great Torontian farewell party to us.
Impeccable service! Great food! Great vibe! We went for dinner at 6pm with friends/business associates and left after 10pm. We didn't wait long for our food. The food presentation was interesting and colourful, plus tasty. Alghough my cesar salad was a bit of the small side. Aside from that, everything was perfect! Beautiful place and very well trained staff.
Unfortunately the food was cold and, while we mentioned it to the wait staff, nothing was done about it on our $600 bill for 3ppl. Yes, that included tip and drinks. New waiter tried OVER THE TOP to be accommodating but, unfortunately, it was too much and a distraction to our dinner with a client.
We’ve been going to sassafraz for years prior to attending theatre about 4 times a year. We’ve celebrated birthdays there, too.
Love the staff, service is great. Food is always very good.
Really like the recent reno
Sassafraz is one of my favourites - and local too, which is nice. Since it had been closed for renovation, I was really looking forward to their spectacular seared tuna salad which I usually order - and had checked on-line that it was still on the menu. Once at the restaurant however, I discovered that the Chef has REMOVED that dish from the menu! I was terribly disappointed. The serving staff and manager couldn’t have been nicer and tried hard to make up for it. BUT, I believe it is a serious mistake on the part of the Chef to eliminate what was a VERY popular and delicious menu item. I hope they will reconsider and bring it back. It was the MAIN reason I used to go to Sassafraz!
We had 5 pm reservations on Mother’s Day and already the duck dish on the menu wasn’t available. That was very disappointing because two of the four members in our party had planned to order that dish. Not very good planning to be out of supply especially for a special occasion.
Also we were sat in an empty restaurant next to an exit door used frequently by staff!!! It was noisy and distracting! We had to ask to be moved. Overall it was not one of the best experiences at Sassafraz on Mother’s Day.
Love the new look! Was busy Mother’s Day, food was enjoyable!
We had a group of five dine at the recently re-opened Sassafraz. It had been closed for updates and renovation. The room was spacious and had windows open to the outdoors which became problematic as the temperature dropped quite noticeably as the evening progressed. Some of our party actually had to don their coats toward the end of our experience.
There was a noticeable lag in the time between ordering and delivery of our meals. The kitchen was obviously still working through their production parameters. As well, there were not enough servers present. We had the sommelier as our server which resulted in delays in both delivery of food and of wine.
All that being said, the food was lovely. And, the sommelier made a wonderful suggestion for one of our wines. The wine cellar is also being reorganized to have a focus on a wider spectrum of wine instead of the past reliance on older vintages of Bordeaux and Burgundy.
Personally, I will return in a month or so to see if the kitchen becomes more nimble and better systems of service are put in place.
The restaurant has just reopened after a redesigning work done, it was my first time there but definitely was pleasantly surprised, it is a very nice place. Food is tasty and elegantly presented, service was OK, but since we went in late, by the time we finished, our waitress really wanted to close our bill and leave, but besides this, very recommended
As always, service was top-notch. Lovely space after the renovations. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable about the product offerings and made good suggestions. Cheese selection was wonderful but the sirloin was perhaps the toughest and chewiest I’ve ever had. Flavours were on point, bad cut of meat. Left surprised as this was opening night and they had the executive chef on site.
Great Sunday breakfast menu. Everything was amazing. Service was great as well
Beautiful restaurant, fantastic salad, great staff when they were available (service a little slow, especially getting that first cocktail drink ... mistake!). Menus were cheap, flimsy paper ... totally out of place for that locale of a restaurant, with other aspects so much higher standard. Until their service level (quicker/more solicitous), menu standards and overall appearance of staff goes up a notch, I couldn't recommend this yet. Note: No offence but someone should be monitoring the appearance of and supervising some of the staff. A few (a hostess - ?) included, looked like they had just thrown themselves together after being hungover all day, squeezed into a cheesy Walmart outfit, and walked around looking a little clueless. Standards need raising all round. Great spot though in the heart of Yorkville. Surely someone can raise it back to its old standard..? let's hope so. I did have cocktails there once in the last six months, at happy hour, sitting at the bar, and it was fun and the bar-tending staff were outstanding. So...for cocktails I'd still go there, but not again for dinner unless something gets changed. Thank you for letting me share my opinion
Excellent great service delicious food!
Was a groupon gift from friends, the menu this time wasn't as good as the previous time. The menu selection was ok, the star of the dish was appealing but the sides wasn't. Overall was an ok meal.
Wonderful meal, superb service, location & modern decor to boot! Food was creative & tasty & service was excellant. I will come back, this is a family staple, we generally dine at Sassafraz twice a year.
Wonderful experience. We had two children under 3 and everyone was very accomadating to the children. The food was delicious well worth the drive from the suburbs
Made us feel warmly welcome even with Groupon.
Food and service were great.
Very good. Always enjoyed Sassafraz. I wonder how it will look after the renovation.
I like this restaurant because is really beautiful and cozy, the food is always amazing, I loved the octopus! The wine selection is notable and the service is great, really friendly and efficient.
Table was not ready when I arrived on time. Staff + Manager were unapologetic.
Yeh food was good overall but the service was very slow.
Great food, good service and atmosphere
Went with friends for dinner and found our server to be friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. The food was amazing and we felt very comfortable taking our time and not feeling rushed. Would recommend Sassafraz to anyone looking for a wonderful experience!
Good food. Perfect customer service. Definitely will be back
Overall very nice food and service. However, front of the house is horrible and not accommodating at all
Always a great meal. Creative menu and great service.
Went here on a Groupon which included app, entree and dessert which was good value. Portions were just right and flavorful. The cheese selection for dessert was too garlicky for my tastes but other than that the meal was good. Waitress did not offer to refill coffee but rest of service was fine. Good ambience and busy for a Thursday. I think sassafraz does a fair amount of Groupon business Jan to March.
We had a very good meal and the service was excellent. The atmosphere is lovely.
Love this place! They made our dinner very special!
Amazing as always; even their groupon menu is inventive, beautiful prepared and presented, and staff are attentive and friendly. Great restaurant that I am happy to revisit as often as I can.
We had such a great time this evening. Our server was absolutely exceptional. I’m a vegan and he took extra care to lay out options for me. Thank you for a great anniversary dinner experience.
We had a really good time at Sassafraz. The service was wonderful and the food really good.
Will be back for sure.
Overall the meal was quite good with a smaller menu. However, if you are a diner with dietary restrictions, do call in advance as the options are limited. Lovely ambiance with a split between having the option to lounge in the front with comfy sofas or fine dining with white table cloths in the next room beyond the glass doors. The service was perfect. Our waiter was attentive without being intrusive and truly did try to accommodate our dietary restrictions, but was limited with the menu. But what we had was superb.
This is the second bad experience I've had at Sassafraz. I ordered a hamburger and it was soggy and the meat was grey and it was tasteless. The service was not great - we were served well in the beginning, but then the waitress never came back for me to order another glass of wine. It wasn't very busy. Not surprised.
Food & Service was amazing !
Very good food, fresh and well prepared. The crab/corn chowder was excellent the Mac&Cheese app was very tasty. The burger was great. Excellent place for a reasonable lunch and I would like to go back for dinner. They seemed to have a v g wine selection although we did not have a glass.
The dessert creme brule was excellent.
Service was professional
